[Bug 2056065] Re: cloud images slow to boot under kvm
Hi Ross, thanks for the report, and that is odd indeed. It sounds like the initialization needing a fallback of some sort to then go to the next step and get to the bootloader. I was quickly retrying and did not see/reproduce that slowdown in the bootloader. It passes that stage rather quick, let us say ~1 second. I didn't care about the later system to work (no PW setting or such), just a cmdline to see how fast it would boot (initialize, boot-load, kernel, complete system boot), the command I ran was: $ sudo qemu-system-x86_64 -m 1G -cpu host -smp 2 -machine accel=kvm,type=q35 -drive file=/tmp/ubuntu-22.04-server-cloudimg- amd64.img,if=virtio,format=qcow2 -nographic I tried the above 1:6.2+dfsg-2ubuntu6.17 in Ubuntu Jammy, as well 1:8.2.2+ds-1 in Debian sid and 1:7.2+dfsg-7+deb12u5 in Debian bookworm. They are all fast with the 22.04 image you referred to. I used that commandline to - for now - to avoid having to look for well meant distracting magic of libvirt or other higher level things. I see nothing super special in my commandline nor can I see the issue. Hence I need to ask you which command or tooling config did you use to start the guest when you see the difference in boot speed? ** Also affects: qemu (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: qemu (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2056065 Title: cloud images slow to boot under kvm To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/cloud-images/+bug/2056065/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 2056126] [NEW] hwmon: (coretemp) Fix core count limitation
Public bug reported: [Impact] In linux 6.8 the coretemp driver supports at most 128 cores per package. Cores higher than 128 will lose their core temperature information. There is an upstream patch set that allows to support more than 128 cores per package, but it's applied to linux-next for now and it's scheduled for 6.9. We should apply the patch set to the Noble 6.8 kernel, so that we can properly support systems with a large amount of cores per package. [Test case] Read temperature info from /sys/class/hwmon on a system with > 128 cores per package (that means we don't have a proper test case to verify the fix at the moment). [Bug 2056111] Re: Bluetooth driver disappears from initramfs with MODULES=dep on 24.04
Interestingly, if I rebuild the initramfs with "MODULES=dep", I get the following firmware files in the initramfs under usr/lib/firmware/intel: usr/lib/firmware/intel/ibt-11-5.ddc.zst usr/lib/firmware/intel/ibt-11-5.sfi.zst usr/lib/firmware/intel/ibt-12-16.ddc.zst usr/lib/firmware/intel/ibt-12-16.sfi.zst And the following (currently loaded) btintel kernel module: usr/lib/modules/6.8.0-11-generic/kernel/drivers/bluetooth/btintel.ko.zst Note that my failure is for intel/ibt-19-0-4.sfi specifically though, not listed above. Building with "most", I get none of the above, these are the only files in the "intel" directory: usr/lib/firmware/intel/ice usr/lib/firmware/intel/ice/ddp usr/lib/firmware/intel/ice/ddp/ice-1.3.35.0.pkg.zst usr/lib/firmware/intel/ice/ddp/ice.pkg.zst There's also no match (via lsinitramfs) for "btintel" when I build using "most". However, bluetooth works fine using "most', and not with "dep", so I'm likely barking up the wrong tree here. [Bug 2056111] [NEW] Bluetooth driver disappears from initramfs with MODULES=dep on 24.04
Public bug reported: Hi, I'm running the noble prerelease on x86, and have had MODULES=dep set in /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf for some time with no issues. Over the weekend, I noticed updates to linux-image-6.8.0-11-generic, linux-modules-6.8.0-11-generic etc, with an associated initramfs rebuild. After the next reboot, bluetooth was unavailable - via dmesg: 2024-03-04T13:32:47.584364+07:00 x1c9 kernel: Bluetooth: hci0: Failed to load Intel firmware file intel/ibt-19-0-4.sfi (-2) 2024-03-04T13:32:47.584367+07:00 x1c9 kernel: Bluetooth: hci0: Reading supported features failed (-56) 2024-03-04T13:32:47.584367+07:00 x1c9 kernel: Bluetooth: hci0: Error reading debug features 2024-03-04T13:32:47.584368+07:00 x1c9 kernel: Bluetooth: hci0: HCI LE Coded PHY feature bit is set, but its usage is not supported. 2024-03-04T13:32:47.584368+07:00 x1c9 kernel: Bluetooth: hci0: Failed to read MSFT supported features (-56) I'd set MODULES=dep via /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf many releases ago (this system was installed with 21.04 and has been upgraded to each of the six subsequent series in turn since), which had always worked until now. Reverting that to MODULES=most (which I believe is the default), rebuilding the initramfs and rebooting has restored Bluetooth functionality. I'm not entirely sure which package this should be filed against - I know the referenced intel/ibt-19-0-4.sfi file is actually part of linux- firmware, and initramfs-tools is presumably also involved, but I see no recent updates to either of those packages (last updated on my system in early February, and I've definitely rebooted since then with no issues), so I'm assuming this must be kernel-related, but I may be misunderstanding how this all fits together. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2056111 Title: Bluetooth driver disappears from initramfs with MODULES=dep on 24.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/2056111/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 2056103] Re: Ubuntu OS 22.04.3 LTS running with Kernel 5.15.0-87-generic hangging intermittently while booting
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Libera.chat. To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/2056103/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package. [Bug 2056099] [NEW] [MIR] tree
Public bug reported: [MIR] tree [Availability] The package tree is already in Ubuntu universe. Tree is a general purpose utility that is built and works on all Ubuntu architectures. Link to package https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tree [Rationale] The package tree is generally useful for a large part of our user base using the command-line. Tree itself is tiny, but is not currently seeded in our official images (albeit it is installed by default on a number of Ubuntu derivatives (Lubuntu - https://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/mantic/release/lubuntu-23.10-desktop-amd64.manifest , Xubuntu - https://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/mantic/release/xubuntu-23.10-desktop-amd64.manifest). One specific reason for this MIR comes from the requirements of a commercial partner who would like to offer the tree command as part of their user experience on their Ubuntu based SDK images. This partner is working with the Canonical Partner Engineering team, albeit the maintenance of tree itself would likely be done by the Foundations team – this has been discussed with the Foundations team. Package tree covers the same use case as ‘ls -lR’ or ‘find’, but is better because: - It is specialized in directories tree rendering for command line interface, so it has a fancier output on a terminal. - It provides machine-friendly output formats notably with its XML/JSON/HTML output formats. - It would be useful to the community and to our partner to have “tree” in Ubuntu main, especially for their upcoming noble/24.04 based SDK. [Security] - Ubuntu CVE Tracker (https://ubuntu.com/security/cve?package=tree) : 0 results as of 2024-03-05. - Debian Security Tracker: https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/source-package/tree: No issue as of 2024-03-05. - Project Changelog: (CHANGES file: http://oldmanprogrammer.net/source.php?dir=projects/tree/CHANGES): No reference to any security issue. - No CVEs/security issues (found) in this software in the past: NB: “tree” is a very commonly used keyword, notably in security vulnerabilities, but searching the CVE database for software names matching “tree” didn’t yield issues with the tree utility itself. - no `suid` or `sgid` binaries: `find / -perm -u=s -type f 2>/dev/null | grep tree` returns nothing – it’s just providing a simple non-privileged command. - `ls -l /usr/bin/tree` returns: `-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 85400 Dec 12 16:06 /usr/bin/tree`. - no executables in `/sbin` and `/usr/sbin`: `dpkg -L tree | grep sbin` returns nothing, it’s really just /usr/bin/tree. - Package does not install services, timers or recurring jobs. - Packages does not open privileged ports (ports < 1024). - Package does not expose any external endpoints. - I didn't spot any deprecated security algorithm in use. [Quality assurance - function/usage] - The package works well right after install and can be used to list the contents of directories. [Quality assurance - maintenance] The package is maintained well in Debian/Ubuntu/Upstream and does not have too many, long-term & critical, open bugs: - Launchpad Bug Tracker (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tree/+bugs): 2 bugs reported in Ubuntu: * One issue seems pretty serious (buffer overflow), and there were fixes in the upstream sources that could correspond, however this bug wasn’t forwarded back then and there is no data to reproduce it – we’ve pinged the bug to request a copy of the data and to try to reproduce with a more recent version. * One issue is a feature request - Debian https://bugs.debian.org/src:tree / https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?archive=both;package=tree : * One resolved serious bug can be found on debian archived bug history. Releases are relatively regular for a mature utility such as tree. Upstream recently changed its home site and seems responsive. $ grep ^Version CHANGES Version 2.1.1 (05/31/2023) Version 2.1.0 (12/26/2022) Version 2.0.4 (09/06/2022) Version 2.0.3 (08/26/2022) Version 2.0.2 (02/16/2022) Version 2.0.1 (01/03/2022) The package does not deal with exotic hardware we cannot support. [Quality assurance - testing] There are no unit tests in the sources, and the autopkgtest (https://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/tree) is relatively trivial, but this seems adequate given this command-line utility. A recent amd64 build log shows no warning nor errors: https://launchpadlibrarian.net/702286929/buildlog_ubuntu-noble-amd64.tree_2.1.1-2_BUILDING.txt.gz [Quality assurance - packaging] - debian/watch is present and works. - debian/control defines a correct Maintainer field (currently: Florian Ernst ). - Running `lintian --pedantic` on tree_2.1.1-2_amd64.deb doesn’t output anything. - This package does not rely on obsolete or about to be demoted packages. - There is no Debconf questions with this package. - Packaging and build is easy, (link to debian/rules: https://git.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tree/tree/debian/rules?h=applied/ubuntu/noble). [Bug 2040924] Re: /etc/update-motd.d/50-landscape-sysinfo: 24: cannot create /var/lib/landscape/landscape-sysinfo.cache: Permission denied
Updated description to include SRU bug template. ** Description changed: landscape-common in mantic has regressed the autopkgtests for update- motd. The landscape-common package is installed in the cloud images, and as a result its update-motd hook is called as part of the autopkgtest. And for whatever reason, in mantic and later, this hook now produces an error message on stdout that evidently was not there before: [...] 416s /etc/update-motd.d/50-landscape-sysinfo: 24: cannot create /var/lib/landscape/landscape-sysinfo.cache: Permission denied 417s autopkgtest [23:07:30]: test show-motd: ---] - 421s autopkgtest [23:07:34]: test show-motd: - - - - - - - - - - results - - - + 421s autopkgtest [23:07:34]: test show-motd: - - - - - - - - - - results - - - - - - - - - - 421s show-motdFAIL stderr: /etc/update-motd.d/50-landscape-sysinfo: 24: cannot create /var/lib/landscape/landscape-sysinfo.cache: Permission denied 421s autopkgtest [23:07:34]: test show-motd: - - - - - - - - - - stderr - - - - - - - - - - 421s /etc/update-motd.d/50-landscape-sysinfo: 24: cannot create /var/lib/landscape/landscape-sysinfo.cache: Permission denied https://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/u/update-motd/mantic/amd64 The existence of the show-motd package implies that users are meant to be able to execute the update-motd hooks. So these hooks should not spew error messages when run as non-root. + + [ Impact ] + + * landscape-common's sysinfo motd executable relies on a cache file in a +location where permissions that are too strict - a user cannot execute +the update-motd hooks without errors. + + * backporting is justified because this permissions issue exists in previous +versions, but it only manifests if the cache is old enough. It breaks +show-motd tests if the cache file is more than 60s old by the time its tests +run. + + [ Test Plan ] + + To reproduce, ensure that /var/lib/landscape-sysinfo.cache does not exist, then + run + + run-parts /etc/update-motd.d/ + + as a non-root user. The output will contain the line: + +/etc/update-motd.d//50-landscape-sysinfo: 17: cannot create + /var/lib/landscape-sysinfo.cache: Permission denied + + [ Where problems could occur ] + + Changes to landscape-sysinfo could potential break motd in other ways. This + would manifest as other error messages in the motd or the motd failing to be + displayed or updated. + + [ Other Info ] + + * Related upstream changes: +* https://github.com/canonical/landscape-client/pull/201 +* https://github.com/canonical/landscape-client/pull/219 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2040924 Title: /etc/update-motd.d/50-landscape-sysinfo: 24: cannot create /var/lib/landscape/landscape-sysinfo.cache: Permission denied To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/landscape-client/+bug/2040924/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
