[Bug 1678064] [NEW] Attempting to install to a single btrfs root partition crashes the installer

2024-06-01 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

If I create a single partition, type btrfs mounted as /, the installer
takes me briefly to the next screen to input user details, but crashes
as I enter my name. The error detail box is empty.

Partition details:

http://people.canonical.com/~barryprice/subi1.png

Error screen:

http://people.canonical.com/~barryprice/subi2.png

This is running under kvm on an amd64 system, via:

$ qemu-img create -f raw target.img 10G
$ kvm -m 1024 -cdrom custom.iso -hda target.img

Performing exactly the same actions but choosing ext4 rather than btrfs
works fine.

[Bug 1988887] Re: Missing build dependency

2024-06-01 Thread Boyuan Yang
As far as I know, package python3-importlib-resources is not needed as
long as the python version is 3.9 or later. As a result, it shall not be
an issue with the recently-released Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and the ongoing
development.

Since packages are build automatically using the automated environment,
having built package present means that the build-dependency is
satisfied at the time of package build. As a result, I consider your bug
report here to be invalid.

If you find out that the build will indeed fail on a certain previously-
released Ubuntu version, please feel free to make further comments and
reopen this bug. For now, I am marking this bug report as invalid since
it does not contain necessary information for me to reproduce this bug.

[Bug 2067816] [NEW] Delayed audio start/stop after Ubuntu 24.04 upgrade, slow pipewire

2024-06-01 Thread J B
Public bug reported:

Anytime I either

* make any bell noise in my gnome terminal, or
* mute/unmute/change volume in gnome, or
* start, pause or continue a video on firefox

I get
1) the quiet but audible pop that you hear when audio is unmuted
2) **a ~5 second (!) delay**
3) the sound playing

When stopping the sound, the same happens in reverse order, with a
shorter delay.

I suspect that the audio system (pipewire) is opening and closing an
interface, and has perhaps some driver issues? How can I debug this
annoying delay?

journalctl shows during such an event:

[Bug 2067544] Re: [BPO] package-notes/13 from oracular

2024-06-01 Thread Luca Boccassi
** Summary changed:

- [BPO] package-notes/12 from oracular
+ [BPO] package-notes/13 from oracular

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

  The version in oracular introduces a new package, dh-dlopenlibdeps,
  which is a new build dependency of systemd, that we need to use in the
  upstream CI when building systemd in noble images to ensure Ubuntu is
  covered by the integration tests

  [Scope]

- Backport version 0.12 from oracular to noble-backports
+ Backport version 0.13 from oracular to noble-backports

  [Other Info]

  The existing package in this source is unchanged, and the new code is in
  the new binary package that has no reverse dependencies in noble, so
  risk is very low. This will make possible to continue building systemd
  git main in ubuntu noble. No source changes are required, a changelog-
  only upload is sufficient.

[Bug 2003204] Re: Update git because of CVE-2022-23521

2024-06-01 Thread Eliah Kagan
As shown at https://ubuntu.com/security/CVE-2022-23521, Canonical *did*
provide a fix for this, including for the three versions of Ubuntu
mentioned here (18.04 bionic, 20.04 focal, 22.04 jammy). That Ubuntu
Security Notice was published a day before this bug report was opened,
and unless I'm missing something, it looks like this bug report was
based on a misconception about how security patches and their associated
versioning works.

Most security patches in Debian, Ubuntu, and most (though not all)
distros are are provided as patched versions that add only the fix for
the security vulnerability, without new feature changes. In Ubuntu, this
relates to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates. That is what
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/git/+bug/2003204/comments/1
above is referring to. The fixed packages' version numbers did not match
the expectation expressed in the bug description here, but they did fix
the bug.

Of course, it can still be valuable to use ppa:git-core/ppa if one wants
the *features* of a new git version, such as performance, additional
options, more user-friendly messages, and so forth. But getting fixes
for security vulnerabilities does not generally require this, and did
not require it in the case of CVE-2022-23521.

... and when using apt-btrfs-snapshot and doing a 'apt update' the btrfs
partition will be mounted under /tmp/apt-btrfs-snapshot-* .

So deleting /tmp actually deleted the root disk what crashed the system.

[Bug 2067803] [NEW] Workspaces documentation could use some love

2024-06-01 Thread Michael Bellerue
Public bug reported:

I was looking for documentation on how to use workspaces in Ubuntu
24.04. I'm used to having a section of workspace off to the right where
I can drag an application to, and/or click it to select it. That doesn't
exist in 24.04.

This link doesn't line up with how Ubuntu has worked in a good long while. It
has keyboard shortcuts for using up/down to move to different workspaces. It's
been left/right since I don't remember when.
https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/ubuntu-help/shell-workspaces-switch.html.en

Minor side issue. The screenshot on this page goes outside of the content
bounds. Using the Firefox v126.0 snap in Ubuntu 24.04 desktop.

[Bug 2067800] [NEW] needrestart should avoid restarting runner-provisioner.service

2024-06-01 Thread Simon Déziel
Public bug reported:

On GitHub action runners, if there is an update that causes needrestart
to restart the runner-provisioner.service, the action job will
immediately fail.

```
Restarting services...
 /etc/needrestart/restart.d/systemd-manager
 systemctl restart packagekit.service php8.3-fpm.service
runner-provisioner.service systemd-journald.service systemd-networkd.service
systemd-resolved.service systemd-udevd.service udisks2.service
walinuxagent.service
Terminated
```

While the above shows multiple services being restarted, "artificially"
restarting just runner-provisioner.service has shown to cause an
immediate failure (as seen in https://github.com/canonical/lxd-
ci/actions/runs/9323021640/job/25665299316?pr=178)

```
+ sudo systemctl restart runner-provisioner.service
Error: Process completed with exit code 143.
```

If needrestart has a way to exclude services from being restarted,
runner-provisioner.service should be added to the list.

Ran into this issue today. Surprised this is still open.

Anyway, I tried the solution from #16 (thanks Alvin) and it worked.

2024-06-01 Thread George-t
I recently upgraded from 22.04 to 24.04 (through v23.10 via do-release-
upgrade) and now have symptoms similar to those described (flickering of
windows, especially when moving them and I also get screen lockup when
trying to dock a window to top/sides of desktop). Running two displays
on my dell laptop, one via HDMI and the internal as well.

python3-uno.preinst.in uses ucf which makes use of awk.

So actually a Pre-Depends: ucf would be needed here? Although ucf itself
doesn't depend on *awk.

2024-06-01 Thread Cristian Marchi
Hi, same problem here. I've my tb profile and mail stored on a second
hard drive. Creating a new tb profile and linking it to the existing
folder in the second hd, I can see the email account in the left panel
in tb but no emails are displayed.

I noticed that in the new profile the link to the existing folder is
"/run/user/1000/doc/25c344c1/TBprofile" while in the non-snap tb it was
"/mnt/POSTA/TBprofile". Both paths are accessible using the terminal

Sorry mawk is not actually essential, so in either case you miss a
Depends. Actually a PreDepends.

I do not believe a PreDepends: awk would work but I'm not sure - does it
require all awks to be configured or just one is the question.

2024-06-01 Thread Julian Andres Klode
The issue here is that apt is forced to remove libreadline8 to allow installing
libreadline8t64. The user has gawk installed which has the higher priority for
awk.
gawk is not essential so it doesn't have the immediate handling of an essential
package.
The python3-uno package uses awk in its preinst which fails due to the forced
removal of libreadline8.

The only way out of this issue is to use explicitly mawk in the
maintainer script which is Essential. The use of awk doesn't work
because it's not an Essential facility (as it may be provided by gawk),
and you don't want to depend on gawk since you don't use gawk
specifically, and a dependency on awk would be satisfied by mawk.

Thinking more about this, wouldn't invoking /bin/bash actually increase
the attack potential, by allowing for backticks and $() to execute via
user-supplied data?

Also, it's not clear to me that ${quote} escapes backticks or $().

packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on
Libera.chat.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/2067789/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[Bug 2067785] [NEW] Improve power consumption of Broadcom CV3 Plus Device

2024-06-01 Thread Andy Chi
Public bug reported:

[ Impact ]

 * Upstream commit:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/libfprint/libfprint/-/commit/eaec2339ccaee64b2bdb1d1e27f51ada673e4087

 * Add new Broadcom device IDs in order to reduce the power consumption
   on the target machine.

 * It might consume more power if the IDs are not in the list.

[ Test Plan ]

 * Install package on laptop with either IDs list below, and check
USB_DEVICE/power/control
   is auto or on.

 * usb:v0A5Cp5860*
   usb:v0A5Cp5863*
   usb:v0A5Cp5864*
   usb:v0A5Cp5865*
   usb:v0A5Cp5866*
   usb:v0A5Cp5867*

[ Where problems could occur ]

 * Should be low because these IDs only affect on the machine with those
Broadcom devices and it
   improves the power consumption.

[Bug 2065780] Re: mouse cursor turns into big white square on pwr resume

2024-06-01 Thread Casio
The problem occurs after the Video output to the monitor is switched off
(the LCD monitor said it was powering off) following the gradual fade
out of the login screen. i.e. I guess this is when the video card is put
into deep sleep or power saving mode?

The photo attached was taken after I pressed the docking station power
on button to wake the laptop up (wagging the mouse did nothing, so I
assume the laptop had gone into a deep sleep state or whatever Ubuntu
does when the laptop isn't used for a long time.

So it looks like whenever the mouse cursor pointer is stored, that
location loses its memory when the laptop sleeps, and then when it wakes
up, you end up with a big white square instead of the mouse pointer
image.

** Attachment added: "Photo of laptop deep sleep square mouse cursor on waking."
