[Bug 2063046] Re: build-depends on obsolete python3-nose-timer

2024-06-19 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
I've put a reminder to bug 2068019 and we are happy to wait for this new upload
to unblock this.
But since we know what it actually waits for it makes no sense to show up in
the bug housekeeping weekly - dropping the server-todo tag.

[Bug 2069681] Re: Unable to install visualvm plugins: VisualVM-Coherence, VisualVM-JFR Streaming

[Bug 2065180] Re: performance regression in dracut-install 060

2024-06-19 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Ooooh, right. The hook might want to call something like `depmod`
against the modules.

So, that's a reasonable thing for a user-configured hook to do, which
means we can't break it in an SRU. It *would* still be nice to get the
significant speedup you've got here, though. Could this change to
`manual_add_modules` *only* apply to hooks installed by packages (ie: in
/usr/share/initramfs-tools)? Those we *can* fix.

[Bug 2069741] Re: [amdgpu] Screen is flickering

2024-06-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Display cables matter a lot because they have to transmit gigabits per
second and small imperfections can interrupt that randomly, leading to a
temporarily black screen.

The reason a cable might work on Windows but not Linux could be slightly
different signalling, if for example Windows is using 24-bit colour and
Linux using 30-bit. Then Linux would need more bandwidth to maintain a
stable connection.

But it could also just be a software bug. If you want to try installing
the latest graphics test kernel then download these four deb files:

  https://kernel.ubuntu.com/mainline/drm-tip/2024-06-04/amd64/

and then install them at the same time:

  sudo dpkg -i *.deb

You probably also need to have Secure Boot DISABLED in the BIOS in order
to test such kernels.

Since it's a test kernel it's not guaranteed to always work. You can
which tell version is running with the command:

  uname -r

But why would the cable be the reason if it works properly on windows?
And I would like to change kernel if it fixes the problem, the thing is I'm
kind of new to Linux so I don't get a lot of Linux related stuff, but I already
can install packages and do other simple actions.

Since it involves installing a lot of packages repeatedly and you don't
sound confident, I will no longer recommend trying other kernels.

2024-06-19 Thread Maxim
All kernels available in the repository (not really sure which though,
that's what said in the guide at least) are 6.8.0.31 and 6.8.0.35 and
both of them have this problem. Probably there is a way to install other
kernels, though I'm unsure which version should I install, how do I do
that and does it break my system if I do it the wrong way.

[Bug 2069741] Re: [amdgpu] Screen is flickering

2024-06-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. The only message I can see that might be related is:

kernel: amdgpu :03:00.0: amdgpu: Disabling VM faults because of
PRT request!

which some googling suggests is caused by the GPU being under load.
Certainly Steam was running at the time.

It might pay to try some older and newer kernels:

  https://kernel.ubuntu.com/mainline/?C=N;O=D

and hopefully you can find some that don't have the bug. If so then you
would be able to zoom in on where the problem started (or was fixed).

[Bug 2069924] [NEW] indicator and SettingsDaemon services do not start with "Gnome Flashback (Xmonad)"

2024-06-19 Thread Micah Corah
Public bug reported:

What happened: When logging into a "Gnome Flashback (Xmonad)" session, several
indicator and SettingsDaemon services do not start. Several gnome bar icons do
not appear (bluetooth, time, etc.), and keyboard inputs such as super-L to lock
do not function.
Expectation: That these services would start as for other Gnome Flashback
sessions. In turn, other functions such as keyboard lock and gnome-bar icons
should function properly
Release: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
Package: xmonad: Installed: 0.17.2-1ubuntu2

Fix:

Systemd targets for these services appear to be missing. Copying the
"session.conf" file for mentacity to
/usr/lib/systemd/user/gnome-session@gnome-flashback-xmonad.target.d/
fixes this issue.

[Bug 2000275] Re: evince neither prints nor previews postscript documents

2024-06-19 Thread Ubfan
The problem persists on Ubuntu 22.04 Desktop, but has been fixed in
Ubuntu 24.04. Using a different printer, a Canon lbp3060, with evince
version 46.0, ghostscript version 10.02.1, and gv 3.7.4, both preview
and printing from evince work. Driver cnrdrvcups-ufr2lt-
us_5.00-1_amd64.deb was used for this printer.

[Bug 2069860] [NEW] [needs-packaging] cmocka-extensions

2024-06-19 Thread Alexandre Esse
Public bug reported:

Currently working on elos (https://github.com/Elektrobit/elos) software
packaging, the first dependency I would like to integrate into Ubuntu is
cmocka-extensions (https://github.com/Elektrobit/cmocka_extensions).

cmocka-extensions are cmocka unit testing framework for C extended
features used by elos and other projects.

This package extends basic cmocka features and intoduces:
 * weak mocking
 * wrap mocking
 * and some definitions to make creating and running the unit tests a bit
easier that the basic cmocka

[Bug 2056461]

2024-06-19 Thread kip
Created attachment 306479
Kip's second test log

TJ, I may have spoke too soon. I've tried running it again on the hello
source. My image uses your patched kernel via a PPA with the upgrade
performed via the --setup-commands:

https://launchpad.net/~kip/+archive/ubuntu/linux-kernel-6.8.0

I am still seeing the following:

ERROR: testbed failure: sent `auxverb_debug_fail', got `timeout',
expected `ok...'

To rule out the possibility of an incorrectly setup image, would you be
able to generate an Ubuntu Noble image for me to test? I've been getting
the image via:

$ autopkgtest-buildvm-ubuntu-cloud --verbose -r noble -a amd64 --cloud-
image-url http://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/daily/server

...followed by running the --setup-commands to a bash script containing:

$add-apt-repository ppa:kip/linux-kernel-6.8.0
$ apt upgrade --no-install-suggests --no-install-recommends -y

I will attach my log.

[Bug 2068577] Comment bridged from LTC Bugzilla

2024-06-19 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment From vanessa.ba...@ibm.com 2024-06-19 16:28 EDT---
Hello! Thank you very much for your replies!

(In reply to comment #16)
> Hi,

> Thank you for the report!

> Do you mind testing and verify if you run into the same issue with the
> latest Ubuntu kernel?
> It should be 6.8.0-35.35

I upgraded all packages on the server and I'm currently on 6.8.0-35-generic.
I also tore down all NFS (up to the point of uninstalling packages).
And have tried running sosreport and I'm no longer encountering this issue. The
reports get generated with no issues.
No dumps are generated.

(In reply to comment #17)

Since I can no longer reproduce this I can dig around to see if I captured this
information in any earlier instance of this issue.
Is there any value in providing this information now?

(In reply to comment #18)

It is an LPAR, not a zVM guest.

(In reply to comment #19)

Removed :)

Thanks!

[Bug 2065300] Re: [SRU] New upstream microrelease .NET 6.0.30 and SDK 6.0.130

2024-06-19 Thread Mateus Rodrigues de Morais
SRU Verification Results:

* Executed Test Case as described in #1983380 (bug mentioned in Test
Case section)

  - All commands executed as expected.

* Autopkgtest Results:

  - The only test that failed was 'release-version-sane', but the failure was
not introduced by this upload. The test failed because it currently expects the
packaged .NET version to be the same as the latest upstream .NET version. As
there has already been another (Windows-only) upstream release (6.0.31), the
test fails.
  - We have worked on modifying this test to a more realistic scenario that
compares the current package version against any upstream current or previous
versions, which will be released on the next .NET monthly update in July.
  - All the other tests were either SKIP (by design) or PASS.

[Bug 1336541] Re: No TRIM via USB

2024-06-19 Thread Ubfan
On the Orico M.2 NVME SSD enclosure which claims to support UASP, trim
did not work on a fresh Ubuntu 24.04 install until a rule was added to
/etc/udev/rules.d. The lsblk --discard sda output also listed a DISK-MAX
of 0 for all partitions. After the rule (below) added (with proper
vendor and product ids from lsusb), the DISK-MAX was 4G and fstrim
succeeded. See Allen's 2020 answer on

[Bug 2059386] Re: curtin-install.log and curtin-install-cfg.yaml are not collected

2024-06-19 Thread Arif Ali
A quick update, the PR has now been merged, we're now awaiting SRU,
which is likely next version i.e. 4.7.2

If you would like to try it out, the latest snap in latest/edge channel
should have this new plugin and allow you to collect the data.

[Bug 2038648] Re: package sosreport 4.4-1ubuntu0.18.04.1 failed to install/upgrade: installed sosreport package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1

2024-06-19 Thread Arif Ali
Hi Mauricio,

I recreated the deb from the original control file as well as with the
new Version option. Both debs now produced have the
/usr/share/locale/*/LC_MESSAGES/sos.mo files. So I suspect this may be
something that ma have been introduced as part of a different package.

Here is a debdiff of 2 packages that I created locally

root@bionic01:~/bionic# debdiff sosreport_4.4-1ubuntu0.18.04.2_amd64.deb
sosreport_4.4-1ubuntu0.18.04.3_amd64.deb
File lists identical (after any substitutions)

Control files: lines which differ (wdiff format)

Depends: python3-pexpect, python3-yaml, python3:any (>= [-3.3.2-2~)-] {+3.6~)+}
Version: [-4.4-1ubuntu0.18.04.2-] {+4.4-1ubuntu0.18.04.3+}

Doing `dpkg-deb --contents ` to both packages now show the locale
files

I think this is unrelated to the change I have made here in my debdiff

[Bug 2038648] Re: package sosreport 4.4-1ubuntu0.18.04.1 failed to install/upgrade: installed sosreport package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1

2024-06-19 Thread Mauricio Faria de Oliveira
** Description changed:

- [impact]
+ [ Impact ]
+
+ On release upgrade from Xenial to Bionic,
+ there seems to be an unknown corner case
+ (difficult to reproduce) that Python 3.5
+ from Xenial is still in place at the time
+ sosreport from Bionic is installed, which
+ breaks postinst/py3compile as the project
+ has f-strings, which requires Python 3.6.
+
+ This causes an error on do-release-upgrade
+ for affected users, who may have a need to
+ upgrade in order to get Ubuntu Pro updates.
+
+ This is the reason this is being uploaded
+ to the Ubuntu Archive for Bionic (now ESM),
+ and not only into the 'Bionic ESM' archive.
+
+ [ Test Plan ]
+
+ The bug is not easily reproducible, and has been tested by many people within
+ the team (see comment history).
+
+ One way to force the issue (although not on release upgrade)
+ is add the bionic repo to a xenial machine, and try upgrading
+ sosreport. In this case, the error happens
+ This is the only test case we have to _reproduce the issue_.
+
+ Therefore, since the change makes sense
+ and is expected not to cause regressions,
+ the test is to check for (no) regressions.
+
+ 1) Run do-release-upgrade from Xenial to Bionic
+ without -proposed enabled, which is not expected
+ to hit the issue because things usually work.
+
+ 2) Run do-release-upgrade from Xenial to Bionic
+ *with* -proposed enabled, which is not expected
+ to hit issue either because of the fix in place.
+
+ 3) Compare terminal output, apt history, `dpkg -l`
+ between each cases, and check for no differences
+ in package install order, or unexpected things.
+ (see comments 19-31).
+
+ [ Where problems could occur ]
+
+ * The package may not install
+ * The package may not have the right dependencies
+ * There could be other factors in play that the above that we may not have
seen entirely
+
+ [ Other Info ]
+
+ The proposed fix adds "X-Python3-Version: >= 3.6" to the control file, and
this
+ is based on the upstream dependency, and that 3.6 and above are supported.
+
+ This does not have to be reflected in all packages for consistency, as the
only
+ potentially affected release/upgrade is Xenial-Bionic, as clarified by Steve
L.
+ in uploads for other series with this change (bug 2054395 comment 50):
+
+ > + - Add 'X-Python3-Version: >= 3.6' to ensure we use the python
+ > + revision that is supported. (LP #2038648)

Don't install fuse as it wipes out desktop. Fuse versions confusing. Not
able to install pyfuse, either. Should be simple fix but that fix is
hidden somewhere. As this borg mount is a major feature, dependencies
should be handled with install. Very frustrating issue.

[Bug 2064781] Re: setzer does not launch

2024-06-19 Thread John Johansen
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 2046844 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2046844

I will add that while you can manually add the profile as a work around,
the full update that is being SRUed is available in
https://launchpad.net/~apparmor-dev/+archive/ubuntu/apparmor-sru

any testing that can be performed against that is much appreciated.

script in the QA Regression Testing repo:
  https://git.launchpad.net/qa-regression-testing/tree/scripts/test-apparmor.py

This script runs various tests against the installed apparmor
package, as well as building and running the various upstream
regression and other test suites against this installed package:
    -
https://gitlab.com/apparmor/apparmor/-/tree/master/tests/regression/apparmor?ref_type=heads
    -
https://gitlab.com/apparmor/apparmor/-/tree/master/utils/test?ref_type=heads

  The final test output was:

  --
  Ran 62 tests in 1989.948s

  OK (skipped=4)

  georgia@sec-noble-amd64:~$ apt policy apparmor
  apparmor:

+
+ Run additional tests:
+
+ 1. Install wike and make sure the wike window opens when executed:
+ $ sudo apt install wike
+ $ wike
+
+ 2. Install foliate, download test epub and make sure it opens as expected:
+ $ sudo apt install foliate
+ $ wget
https://github.com/daisy/epub-accessibility-tests/releases/download/fundamental-2.0/Fundamental-Accessibility-Tests-Basic-Functionality-v2.0.0.epub
+ $ foliate Fundamental-Accessibility-Tests-Basic-Functionality-v2.0.0.epub
+
+ 3. Install transmission and make sure it starts properly:
+ $ sudo apt install transmission
+ $ transmission-gtk
+
+ 4. bwrap profile tests:
+ - Install setzer and check if it opens as expected:
+ $ sudo apt install setzer
+ $ setzer
+ - Check if flatpak option --unshare=network works, the Recipes app window
should open:
+ $ sudo apt install flatpak
+ $ flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub
https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
+ $ flatpak install flathub org.gnome.Recipes
+ $ flatpak run --unshare=network org.gnome.Recipes

[ Where problems could occur ]

There could still be more applications affected by the
restriction of the creation of unpriviliged user namespaces. They
might require the creation of new unconfined profiles which could
be mitigated in a later SRU.

  [ Other Info ]

  The SRU is available in:

  https://launchpad.net/~georgiag/+archive/ubuntu/4.0.1-0ubuntu0.24.04.2

[Bug 2060437] Re: The module ib_ipoib does not load automatically on ubuntu server 24.04

2024-06-19 Thread Kleber Sacilotto de Souza
Hi @shangsong2,

Sorry for the late reply.

I'm not an expert in IB, but after some investigation it seems that the
module ib_ipoib as being a ULP (Upper Layer Protocol) does not get
loaded automatically by the presence of any hardware interface. It needs
to either be loaded manually or by some boot services.

In Ubuntu this functionality seems to be provided by the 'rdma-core'
package, which provides the systemd service 'rdma-hw.target', which in
turn should load all the modules from the following file, amongst
others, containing by default the 'ib_ipoib' module:

/etc/rdma/modules/infiniband.conf

Could you please install the 'rdma-core' package, reboot the system and
check whether the modules are loaded?

[Bug 2067742] Re: CVE-2024-36041: ksmserver: Unauthorized users can access session manager

2024-06-19 Thread Simon Quigley
** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]

On May 31, 2024, KDE published a security advisory for plasma-workspace:
  https://kde.org/info/security/advisory-20240531-1.txt

This was assigned CVE-2024-36041, and affects all stable versions of
Kubuntu (and the Ubuntu Studio releases with KDE Plasma).

  Overview from the advisory:
KSmserver, KDE's XSMP manager, incorrectly allows connections via ICE based
purely on the host, allowing all local connections. This allows another user on
the same machine to gain access to the session manager. A well crafted client
could use the session restore feature to execute arbitrary code as the user on
the next boot.

The fix for this is applying https://invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-
  workspace/-/commit/da843d3fdb143ed44094c8e6246cfb8305f6f09f (iceauth is
  already installed by default).

  [ Test Plan ]

Ensure your system is fully updated.

  Confirm the vulnerability is present:
   1. Install build-essential and libice-dev (for use in the POC).
   2. Download the POC: `wget
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/735809918/poc-CVE-2024-36041.c`
   3. Compile the POC: `gcc -o poc-CVE-2024-36041 ./poc-CVE-2024-36041.c -lICE`
   4. Run the POC with a path to the ICE socket belonging to the current user.
For example: `./poc-CVE-2024-36041 local/:/tmp/.ICE-unix/1878`
   5. Observe the following output: "Authentication not needed, vulnerable!"

Install the updates from the security-proposed pocket:
   1. Add the PPA: `sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-security-proposed/ppa`
   2. Install the updates for plasma-workspace from the PPA:
-Noble and Mantic: `sudo apt -y install plasma-workspace`
-Jammy: `sudo apt -y install plasma-workspace breeze kwin-x11
libksysguardformatter1`
+    Noble and Mantic: `sudo apt -y install plasma-workspace`
+    Jammy: `sudo apt -y install plasma-workspace breeze kwin-x11
libksysguardformatter1`
+    Focal: `sudo apt -y install plasma-workspace breeze kwin-x11`

  Open Firefox.

Confirm session restore and logout work as intended, and that the
vulnerability is fixed:
   1. Log out of the session and log back in. Confirm Firefox opens as expected.
   2. Run the POC again, this time it will be a different socket. Example:
`./poc-CVE-2024-36041 local/:/tmp/.ICE-unix/5920`
   3. Observe the following output: `None of the authentication protocols
specified are supported. Connection failed! This probably means you're safe.`

[ Where problems could occur ]

The iceauth binary being installed means we do not need
https://invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-workspace/-/commit/1d5aa1d27bff87b2d242ed759cfb2ce15a5c3de7
as well. Several bug reports have been filed regarding this:
   - https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=488187

The test case explicitly covers both of these bugs, to ensure they do
  not exist.

[Bug 2061329] Re: [SRU] displaycal 3.9.11-2 needs patch to work with Python 3.12

2024-06-19 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

DisplayCAL, when released, was only compatible with Python 3.8-3.11.
However, all it needed was WxWidgets 4.1.1 and a few patches to make it
work with Python 3.12. Without, it would simply fail. Namely, it needed
to be patched to remove the Python version check upon launch.

  [Test Case]

   * Install displaycal
   * Run displaycal

  Expected: Run normally
  Result:

  Traceback (most recent call last):
    File "/usr/bin/displaycal", line 4, in
  from DisplayCAL.main import main
    File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/DisplayCAL/main.py", line 27, in

  raise RuntimeError(
  RuntimeError: Need Python version >= 3.8 <= 3.11, got 3.12.2

  [What could go wrong]

The DisplayCAL developers do not yet support Python 3.12 until the
release of WxWidgets 4.2.0 since it could crash upon closure. I (Erich
Eickmeyer) have not experienced this in my testing, however, it is
plausible. Additionally, the patches that were used to make this work
were developed after the release of DisplayCAL 3.9.12, but still applied
cleanly to 3.9.11 and made it function correctly.

To be clear, the issue with WxWidgets is a separate bug and outside the
  scope of this bug.

  [Other Information]

Currently the tests have to be skipped otherwise they segfault with
- Python 3.12 and the entire source FTBFS, hence the inclusion of the
- patch `05_skip-test-wioth-python-3.12.patch`.
+ Python 3.12 and the entire application fails to run, hence the inclusion
+ of the patch `05_skip-test-wioth-python-3.12.patch`. I would, however,
+ argue that the application running trumps its internal tests
+ segfaulting.

  Original bug report:

I have upgraded to the noble beta today, and displaycal fails to start.

The package dependencies request python 3.12, but the actual software
  needs 3.11 (or older).

This has been extensively tested via the AppArmor regression test
script in the QA Regression Testing repo:
  https://git.launchpad.net/qa-regression-testing/tree/scripts/test-apparmor.py

This script runs various tests against the installed apparmor
package, as well as building and running the various upstream
regression and other test suites against this installed package:

[ Where problems could occur ]

There could still be more applications affected by the

[Bug 2067742] Re: CVE-2024-36041: ksmserver: Unauthorized users can access session manager

2024-06-19 Thread Simon Quigley
** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]

On May 31, 2024, KDE published a security advisory for plasma-workspace:
  https://kde.org/info/security/advisory-20240531-1.txt

This was assigned CVE-2024-36041, and affects all stable versions of
Kubuntu (and the Ubuntu Studio releases with KDE Plasma).

  Overview from the advisory:
KSmserver, KDE's XSMP manager, incorrectly allows connections via ICE based
purely on the host, allowing all local connections. This allows another user on
the same machine to gain access to the session manager. A well crafted client
could use the session restore feature to execute arbitrary code as the user on
the next boot.

The fix for this is applying https://invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-
  workspace/-/commit/da843d3fdb143ed44094c8e6246cfb8305f6f09f (iceauth is
  already installed by default).

  [ Test Plan ]

Ensure your system is fully updated.

  Confirm the vulnerability is present:
- 1. Install build-essential and libice-dev (for use in the POC).
- 2. Download the POC: `wget
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/735809918/poc-CVE-2024-36041.c`
- 3. Compile the POC: `gcc -o poc-CVE-2024-36041 ./poc-CVE-2024-36041.c -lICE`
- 4. Run the POC with a path to the ICE socket belonging to the current user.
For example: `./poc-CVE-2024-36041 local/:/tmp/.ICE-unix/1878`
- 5. Observe the following output: "Authentication not needed, vulnerable!"
+  1. Install build-essential and libice-dev (for use in the POC).
+  2. Download the POC: `wget
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/735809918/poc-CVE-2024-36041.c`
+  3. Compile the POC: `gcc -o poc-CVE-2024-36041 ./poc-CVE-2024-36041.c -lICE`
+  4. Run the POC with a path to the ICE socket belonging to the current user.
For example: `./poc-CVE-2024-36041 local/:/tmp/.ICE-unix/1878`
+  5. Observe the following output: "Authentication not needed, vulnerable!"

Install the updates from the security-proposed pocket:
- 1. Add the PPA: `sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-security-proposed/ppa`
- 2. Install the updates for plasma-workspace from the PPA: `sudo apt -y
install plasma-workspace`
+  1. Add the PPA: `sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-security-proposed/ppa`
+  2. Install the updates for plasma-workspace from the PPA:
+Noble and Mantic: `sudo apt -y install plasma-workspace`
+Jammy: `sudo apt -y install plasma-workspace breeze kwin-x11
libksysguardformatter1`

  Open Firefox.

Confirm session restore and logout work as intended, and that the
vulnerability is fixed:
- 1. Log out of the session and log back in. Confirm Firefox opens as expected.
- 2. Run the POC again, this time it will be a different socket. Example:
`./poc-CVE-2024-36041 local/:/tmp/.ICE-unix/5920`
- 3. Observe the following output: `None of the authentication protocols
specified are supported. Connection failed! This probably means you're safe.`
+  1. Log out of the session and log back in. Confirm Firefox opens as expected.
+  2. Run the POC again, this time it will be a different socket. Example:
`./poc-CVE-2024-36041 local/:/tmp/.ICE-unix/5920`
+  3. Observe the following output: `None of the authentication protocols
specified are supported. Connection failed! This probably means you're safe.`

[ Where problems could occur ]

The iceauth binary being installed means we do not need
https://invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-workspace/-/commit/1d5aa1d27bff87b2d242ed759cfb2ce15a5c3de7
as well. Several bug reports have been filed regarding this:
- - https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2290337
- - https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=488187
+  - https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2290337
+  - https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=488187

The test case explicitly covers both of these bugs, to ensure they do
  not exist.

[Bug 1970236] Re: Grub2 bios-install defaults to BIOS disk drivers, may break large disk boot

2024-06-19 Thread Filofel
Hi mkukri,

I'm using an HP Elitebook 8760W, released in 2011.
It's great fast, powerful, two internal SATA slots, very large RAM, and carbon
footprint largely amortized by now.
And it's i7 is still largely fast and powerful enough for most usages, and I
don't see the need for buying a new machine, and I would instantly recommend a
similar refurbished machine over brand new cheap ones. Heck, it was a Rolls
Royce in 2011!
But its UEFI BIOS is a prototype (it warns / displays so and can't be fixed),
not reliable, and hackable by rootkits and other malwares.

OTOH, it works and boots fine with Grub native drivers, and I haven't had any
problem since I figured the default 32-bit BIOS drivers out (april 2022), fixed
the problem and posted this message.
The Grub config wasn't altered through OS and/or Grub updates / upgrades, not
even upgrading from 20.04 to 22.04, so I guess I'm safe enough.

Too bad that Grub doesn't autodetect and autofix the BIOS-Grub / BIOS
driver on disks > 2TiB though, since that's a guaranteed failure. While
using native drivers is only a hazard - and not even one as far as I'm
concerned!

[Bug 2061329] Re: [SRU] displaycal 3.9.11-2 needs patch to work with Python 3.12

2024-06-19 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

DisplayCAL, when released, was only compatible with Python 3.8-3.11.
However, all it needed was WxWidgets 4.1.1 and a few patches to make it
- work with Python 3.12. Without, it would simply fail.
-
+ work with Python 3.12. Without, it would simply fail. Namely, it needed
+ to be patched to remove the Python version check upon launch.

  [Test Case]

- * Install displaycal
- * Run displaycal
+  * Install displaycal
+  * Run displaycal

  Expected: Run normally
  Result:

  Traceback (most recent call last):
    File "/usr/bin/displaycal", line 4, in
  from DisplayCAL.main import main
    File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/DisplayCAL/main.py", line 27, in

  raise RuntimeError(
  RuntimeError: Need Python version >= 3.8 <= 3.11, got 3.12.2

-
  [What could go wrong]

The DisplayCAL developers do not yet support Python 3.12 until the
release of WxWidgets 4.2.0 since it could crash upon closure. I (Erich
Eickmeyer) have not experienced this in my testing, however, it is
plausible. Additionally, the patches that were used to make this work
were developed after the release of DisplayCAL 3.9.12, but still applied
cleanly to 3.9.11 and made it function correctly.

+ To be clear, the issue with WxWidgets is a separate bug and outside the
+ scope of this bug.

  [Other Information]
+
+ Currently the tests have to be skipped otherwise they segfault with
+ Python 3.12 and the entire source FTBFS, hence the inclusion of the
+ patch `05_skip-test-wioth-python-3.12.patch`.

  Original bug report:

I have upgraded to the noble beta today, and displaycal fails to start.

[Bug 2064393] Re: Merge chrony from Debian unstable for oracular

Debian does new releases regularly, so it's likely there will be newer
versions available before FF that we can pick up if this merge is done
  later in the cycle.

If it turns out this needs a sync rather than a merge, please change the
tag 'needs-merge' to 'needs-sync', and (optionally) update the title as
  desired.

If this merge pulls in a new upstream version, also consider adding an
entry to the Oracular Release Notes:
