[Bug 1305902] Re: indicator-sound-service crashed with SIGSEGV in g_variant_is_trusted()

2014-06-29 Thread Aaron Gerber
I really don't think the status is correct. The fix was only released
for the beta release of Ubuntu. Shouldn't bug fixes also be applied to
current stable releases?

[Bug 1165420] Re: Unable to access indicators from HUD

2014-06-25 Thread Aaron Gerber
I echo the sentiments in #36 by @fburolo. As part of my job, i have to
work with specialized software that only runs on Windows. It's very
feature-rich, but most of the features are buried two tiers deep in the
menu structure with no easier way to get to them. If only Windows had
HUD...

Scratch that. If only the software were still cross-platform...

[Bug 1165420] Re: Unable to access indicators from HUD

2013-11-25 Thread Aaron Gerber
Indeed, HUD management and communication has been quite poor for some
time.

"When a design is complete, we'll add a work item in a blueprint to add
the feature." Sounds a lot like "We're not ignoring you, we're just not
going to pay attention to you right now." Perhaps that's why this bug
was assigned to someone who, according to their own web page, prefers
Yellow Dog Linux and Gnome.

(Don't misunderstand, this is not intended as an attack on Mr. Gould,
about which I know very little. I'm simply voicing the general feeling
that the community and their opinions and preferences are being
neglected in favor of Canonical's grandiose designs for creating an OS
experience more like those of Ubuntu's commercial competitors.)

[Bug 1244996] [NEW] The majority of menu options are missing from HUD search results

2013-10-26 Thread Aaron Gerber
Public bug reported:

I installed LibreCad on two machines with Quantal. On the one, I
upgraded to LibreCad 2.0 via the developers PPA. The other machine I
upgraded to Saucy, thereby upgrading Librecad to 2.0. In both cases,
the majority of LibreCad's menu options were missing from the HUD search
results.

Upon removing the PPA from the Qunatal machine and reinstalling Librecad
1.0.2, the menu items were once again available in HUD.

2012-11-16 Thread Aaron Gerber
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1056743 ***

Of course this is subjective, but it seems to me that a modern search
engine in this context should ignore spaces, anyways. Even if Unity
weren't errantly splitting the names, it would seem common enough that a
user wouldn't know whether to include or exclude a space in a compound-
word application name.

[Bug 961286] Re: HDMI audio device detected by the system but not listed in Sound Settings

2012-09-11 Thread Aaron Gerber
Same here. HDMI video output becomes available automatically when
hooked up, but HDMI sound output does not. (It is not listed in Sound
Settings dialog.)

My machine has not proprietary drivers installed, so that can't be the
source of the problem.

If I restart pulseaudio while HDMI is hooked up, the HDMI sound output
becomes available. Essentially, the list of available outputs is not
being refreshed automatically.

My pulseaudio is version 1:1.1-0ubuntu15.

[Bug 711035] Re: Splash screens for applications inconsistent with Ubuntu Desktop

2012-07-19 Thread Aaron Gerber
Might I suggest a compromise? It seems to me that it would be fairly
simple to add "Show splash screen at startup" entry under LO's general
options. Better yet, there could be a "Startup behavior" entry with
"Splash screen", "NotifyOSD", and "Do Nothing" radio buttons.

To me, the always-on-top splash screen seems a sub-optimal approach,
when the OS has a much less obtrusive notification method built in. But
maybe it's asking too much to request that level of interaction with the
OS on a cross-platform suite.

I seriously doubt that the state of the splash screen is due to a
copyright clause. Everything in LibreOffice is either under Creative
Commons or GPL. And the user *can* disable the splash screen by
manually altering a settings file.

Two things:

I don't think those two lines are the issue. If I disable "Window

this test case, I've left the "Icon in Taskbar" enabled, so that if

I haven't seen the warning you mentioned.

[Bug 1007346] [NEW] multiple non-default preferences conflict

2012-06-01 Thread Aaron Gerber
Public bug reported:

Specifically, I noticed this issue among the checkbox-style preferences.
E.g., my preference is to disable "Window Always-on-Top" and "Icon in

works.

Re: [Bug 134745] Re: Metacity Dialogs appear and lock up the system.

2007-09-02 Thread Aaron Gerber
I've attached the backtrace in gdb-metacity.txt and my
.xsession-errors. Looking at the xsession-errors it gives gtk-warning
about not finding an icon file. This have something to do with it?

Re: [Bug 134745] Re: Metacity Dialogs appear and lock up the system.

2007-09-01 Thread Aaron Gerber
After I wrote my last email about not being able to have easy steps to
trigger the bug, it left me thinking. I thought more about what I had
rambled about previously and why a metacity dialog would be triggered.
My guess had been that it was caused by a "Not Responding" dialog. Well
it turns out, that's exactly what is going on.

If you open up the terminal and start any program (ex:
gnome-calculator), suspend it (Ctl+Z) and then try to close the window
as you would normally (via the metacity widget).

It should bring up a dialog that says "This application isn't
responding, do you want to kill the application." Turns out, my system
never gets that far. I've never seen that dialog since I upgraded to
Gutsy. Instead of showing the dialog, it just hangs until I ssh in and
kill the process (ex: /usr/lib/metacity/metacity-dialog --screen 0
--timestamp 3288704419 --kill-window-question Calculator 0x2c3).

Re: [Bug 134745] Re: Metacity Dialogs appear and lock up the system.

2007-08-31 Thread Aaron Gerber
No, I've been trying to track down when metacity-dialog gets called, but
I guess I don't really understand metacity dialogs. I understand when
thunderbird or firefox would open a dialog box, but I don't really
understand why metacity would open a dialog. Some of the arguments give
an indication of why the metacity dialog gets called
"--kill-window-question [SOME PROGRAM]" With that said, I'm not sure why
that would be called. Is it because the underlying program not
responding? Sometimes it has to do with gthumb, sometimes firefox,
sometimes nautilus, etc. So I guess that's a long answer to a short
question, no I don't have any steps that could trigger the bug, I've
been trying to find a pattern, but as of yet, I haven't found one.

yeah, I made a new user and it still happens when I'm logged in as that
new user.

Re: [Bug 134745] Re: Metacity Dialogs appear and lock up the system.

2007-08-27 Thread Aaron Gerber
As it is a dialog from metacity, it only opens a dialog when it needs
feedback about something. I've tried running
"/usr/lib/metacity/metacity-dialog [OPTIONS]" and there are no options
that I can give it to make it run, it just says I give it bad
arguments. So have a debugger can't really help.

[Bug 134745] Metacity Dialogs appear and lock up the system.

2007-08-25 Thread Aaron Gerber
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

Since I upgraded to gutsy the following occurs: everytime a metacity
dialog is started, it locks up gnome. I can't CTL-ALT-DELETE to restart
X, I can't do anything graphically. To get my system back, I have to
ssh in and kill the process. Below is what I get from "ps aux | grep
metacity-dialog". As soon as I kill the process everything comes back to
life.
