Sorry for reopening this, but just because it may or not be a bug in GConf, it is still most certainly a bug in Ubuntu. [Bug 427619] [NEW] gnome panel eats up all CPU time and still refuses to load.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel Gnome panel had issues when I moved to using a dual monitor set up. It would half load, then fail. I would kill it, and then it would load correctly. Eventually, I removed the second monitor and now my system is unusable. On log in, gnome panel quickly monopolizes my quad core machine (CPU: 75%, from top) and grinds the entire GUI to a halt. If I switch VTs though, my console session is completely responsive. Killing gnome panel from the console (I have to because Gnome is too busy locking up) quickly spikes X to 50% CPU usage, although the panel eventually respawns and just doesn't do anything, although the GUI is responsive again. [Bug 378777] [NEW] Wine crashes X when restoring previous resolution
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: wine If I play a game like Starcraft (though it triggers on others) Wine can properly downgrade the resolution to 640x480, or whatever the game prefers. When I quit the game, the whole X server goes down when Wine tries to restore it. What's bizarre is that this happens ONLY if Wine has focus though when the application closes. Example: Starcraft for various reasons only functions if Wine (and not the window manager) is allowed to manage the windows. So what happens is that if I hit ALT-Tab, another application will have focus, but Wine will still draw on top of everything (my cursor reverts to standard, and Wine's app will not recieve keyboard input). If I click the exit button after alt-tabbing, X wont crash. If I don't do this, and try to exit normally, X will crash. This did not happen before I upgraded to Jaunty. I am currently running nVidia drivers (and I was before) and I've run both blessed versions and those straight from nVidia on both setups (pre and post Jaunty upgrade). This has not affected Wine's behavior. I'm filing this under Wine because native apps (or at least gnome- display-properties) seem to have no problem messing with the screen resolution, as well as the aformentioned work around. The Wine PPA has not helped address this issue. ** Affects: wine (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Wine crashes X when restoring previous resolution https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/378777 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 373498] [NEW] Mutlimonitor UNR makes me want to start killing kittens (again).
Public bug reported: Summery posted first, real usecase/bug report below. This is on a fully patched Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix on the Dell Mini 9. 1) UNR comes up on the wrong screen. 2) There's no way to get it to move to the right screen. 3) It defaults to popping up everything on top of itself, even when there's a better option. 4) Its a PITA to get it to the better option. 5) Once I want to multitask, I I lose everything again for no good reason. After reading bug#158415, I understand some of the technical difficulties of getting hotplugging right with the drivers, but userspace is seriously fucked too. I've got a Dell Mini 9, with its cute 1024x600 resolution. Meanwhile, I've got a monitor capable of driving 1280x1024, which I plug in (VGA). After the the intel driver requires me to log out, (but really it means reboot, otherwise nothing happens, I switch to VT, and get garbage) I log in and the circus begins. I've dragged my monitors to have my built-in display below the real monitor, because that's how they're physically laid out. So upon logging in I'm greeted with a MASSIVE 1280x1024 netbook-launcher, and 1024x600 of blank space below it. Then I launch epiphany. Which, (SURPRISE!) pops up OVER the netbook launcher, leaving me with 1280x1024 of epiphany, and still 1024x600 of nothing below. After struggling for a few minutes to get UNR to the bottom I give up and spend a few more to realize that I have to rightclick the PANEL to unmaximize epiphany (because I can't just move it -- move doesn't do anything but unmaximize my window, follow my mouse and gives up before getting close to the built in). Then I drag it down, reposition it so that I can actually see my window controls, and then hit maximize and wine up with the attached monstrosity. Despite the fact that my layout is the exact opposite of what I want, I deal with it to submit this report, and realize that I might need to gimp the screenshot I took, so I go back up to UNR (which is unconfigurably massive) and click on the graphics tab, AND EPIPHANY DISAPPEARS once again leaving me with a monitor on the bottom filled with nothing. How cute, its been minimized to the top of a different monitor so that its not blocking what's not underneath it. This is complete failure (and one of the reasons I'm scared about Gnome 3.0). ** Affects: netbook-launcher (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Mutlimonitor UNR makes me want to start killing kittens (again). https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/373498 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 357870] [NEW] fakerebooted kernel does work
Public bug reported: When Ubuntu installs a new kernel and needs to reboot, it uses a quickreboot mechanism (kexec?) that bipasses the BIOS. This breaks my machine horribly. VT terminals and USpash fail to appear and I get a blank screen, until shutdown when I see an 80x24 terminal scrambled with random data. Sound fails. Pulse audio only seeings NULL output. Compiz initializes, but refuses to load half my settings (I have a cube with 4 faces, but the cylendar plugin doesn't load). If I try to continue, despite these facts, the system seems much more Crash happy where things are more likely to explode. This is 100% reproducable (it happens every time). All in all, this fastreboot mechanism fails horribly on my machine, and makes me have to shutdown and then reboot, AGAIN. Assuming the system shuts down correctly without me having to hard power it off. ** Affects: linux-ports-meta (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- fakerebooted kernel does work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/357870 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This machine was upgraded from 8.10; so somewhere between then and now it got installed. My logs must not go far enough back to find out when it was installed, but the earliest I could find was an upgrade on September 10th, 2008: landscape-client (0.1) to 1.0.18-0ubuntu1. [Bug 340843] [NEW] landscape programs wake up far too much.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: landscape-client This is on Jaunty beta: All currently running landscape-* programs currently wake up far more than is understandable on my machine, accounting for 1.3% of all wakeups a piece (the sum of four being about 5%). A report from powertop reveals 10 wakeups (per process) during the default period. By comparison, Rhythmbox which was playing music was consuming an average of 8.2 wakeups, and Transmission actively uploading at 10KBps only had 7.7 wakeups. As I understand it, the landscape programs don't do much without some paid support from Ubuntu, and as they are in the default install, care should be made sure that they behave and should not wake the computer up far more than it needs to. ** Affects: landscape-client (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- landscape programs wake up far too much. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/340843 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 274071] [NEW] Spash screen only show red mess
Public bug reported: This may be either a bug in the kernel or upstart, I'm not sure. When I boot Intrepid Ibex, the spash screen doesn't show, but instead I get a whole half of a red screen, the bottom half is black. And then white columns the width of characters if my screen were 80x24 begin to descend in alternating rows. Once the reach the black portion of the screen, they emerge as teal squares, instead of white. This didn't happen around the time of -rc5, but its difficult to regression test because most of -rc5 didn't even boot (and I had to run a custom kernel). X comes up as expected after a while, but I can't even switch to a VT, or my monitors states No signal. Before the spash screen initializes, the kernel informs me about not having an AGP apurature, and tells me to enable some option that doesn't exist in my BIOS. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Spash screen only show red mess https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/274071 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 273399] [NEW] gnome-panel freezes when I click on the calendar
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel This seems very similar to bug #225416, but that was closed almost 5 months ago, so I'll report a new one. Using Intrepid Ibex (beta) gnome- panel will freeze when I click the calendar. I have the weather portion enabled and set to Greensboro, NC. I also have appointments in evolution. Interesting enough, the two things that still work are the embeded system monitor, and the notification applet and volume control. But Wanda, the pager, and launcher all die with gnome-panel The gnome-panel version is 1:2.23.92-0ubuntu2. This also happened in Hardy sometimes, but it happens a lot more now. ** Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- gnome-panel freezes when I click on the calendar https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/273399 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 271499] [NEW] Elisa is can not be installed
Public bug reported: Trying to install Elisa on my Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex (AMD64) machine today failed, because of unresolvable dependencies of python-elisa, even though python-elisa is installable. [Bug 267634] [NEW] [REGRESSION] No disk drives in /dev/disk after upgrading to Intrepid
Public bug reported: I decided to take the plunge to Intrepid Ibex tonight, and that was a mistake: my machine no longer boots. After working around song OHCI bugs, my machine doesn't boot because it can't find the disk to boot from - I've tried toggling IDE emulation in my BIOS to no effect. [Bug 68490] Re: suspend corrupted my hard-disk (VERY BAD)
I made backups, and I just tried hibernating and suspending my machine with a custom hardy git kernel, and I could hibernate without problems. I'm typing this on my machine which has successfully hibernated and come back 3 times now. -- suspend corrupted my hard-disk (VERY BAD) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/68490 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 68490] Re: suspend corrupted my hard-disk (VERY BAD)
I couldn't test, because my DVDRW drive near exploaded when I tried to boot Intrepid (hardware failure, not software). But looking at the kernel changelog, commit 20ed5d71446c103126c14a37560d3697a5287493 (Ubuntu's kernel git) seems to address this problem, and the related link http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/5/25/96 seems to be the same issue. [Bug 30692] Re: Evolution appears in two - Internet and Office - menus with different icons and labels
This is my first debdiff, but this removes the Evolution entry from Internet (as well as the duplicate entry in alacarte mentioned above). The reason I removed that was because it was added in debian/ so this is closer to upstream. If this approach isn't the best, perhaps we could still eliminate the extra .desktop files, but just change the category of the upstream version from Office(?) to Network. ** Attachment added: Debdiff to eliminate the Evolution under Office http://launchpadlibrarian.net/17106908/evolution_2.22.3.1-0ubuntu2.debdiff -- Evolution appears in two - Internet and Office - menus with different icons and labels https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/30692 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 260495] [NEW] Unable to back up wine directory with Brasero (bad handling of symlinks)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: brasero Brasero handles symlinks very poorly, and I am unable to back up a wine directory because of it. Unforunately, ~/.wine/dosdevices/z: points to /, which causes brasero to think it has to back up EVERYTHING, including that symlink to / which makes brasero think it has to back up EVERYTHING including the symlink to... To make matters worse, removing the wine directory from the project doesn't make Brasero forget that it added it, so it still thinks I'm backing up 500+ GB of data, and complains. [Bug 68490] Re: suspend corrupted my hard-disk (VERY BAD)
I've had the exact same problem. STR will corrupt the super block off of the bootable linux partition, and the other drives just wind up corrupted. So /dev/sd[boot] winds up having to be reformatted (because everything is in /lost+found), but everything is okay after the journal recovers.
