The package currently doesn't work because of bug #956949. It should be fixed in Chuck's package and it is also fixed in Debian version 2012.1~e3+dfsg+1-2, which is not a new upstream release. I can confirm the package from Debian works. I don't know what changes does the new upstream release contain. The patch you are proposing has been discussed on the upstream mailing-list as well, as far as I can see.
