[Bug 259385] Re: Intrepid Compiz hangs on login for i830MG and i845 video cards

2008-11-03 Thread Aero Leviathan
Martin, could you enlighten us as to what changed in the driver between
Hardy and Intrepid? Is it a different driver, or a free vs. proprietary
issue?

Everyone else, please read the entire report before commenting and avoid
posting any further redundant information.

[Bug 259385] Re: Intrepid Compiz hangs on login for i830MG and i845 video cards

2008-10-28 Thread Aero Leviathan
My machine is an HP Pavilion minitower, not a laptop. The model number
is A210N. Not sure how this might relate to the release notes text,
maybe just add '...and some older desktops' to it. (It is about... 5
years old, I guess. How time flies.)

The maintainer(?) for the video card driver should also be made aware of
this, because it is a regression.

2008-10-23 Thread Aero Leviathan
Please see bugs marked duplicate of this one for additional info about
hardware affected.

At least myself and one other that are experiencing this problem did NOT
experience it with Compiz enabled in previous versions of Ubuntu.

Compiz is apparently enabled by default, so this is a showstopper for
new users.

I can also confirm that this bug still exists in today's RC.

[Bug 277344] Re: Intrepid CD Live Gnome desktop fails

2008-10-21 Thread Aero Leviathan
Same symptoms, same workaround, but I must also add that the same
machine ran Compiz quite nicely on Feisty and Hardy (enabled by
default), so I do not believe the hardware is incompatible with Compiz.

I suggest others here try booting from a Hardy desktop CD and see if it
runs with 'desktop effects' turned on (GNOME menu > Preferences >
Appearance > Visual Effects). Either the 'normal' or 'extra' setting
will use Compiz, whereas the 'none' setting uses Metacity (I think).

Losing Compiz is no deal-killer, but it is nice to have.

[Bug 281045] Re: Hang at GNOME login

2008-10-15 Thread Aero Leviathan
Per crimsun on IRC, I looked in ~/.xsession-errors (attached). Googled
it and found bug #277344, which suggested compiz may be a problem.
Removed compiz, and now I'm able to login fine.

Compiz worked fine for me in hardy.

Not sure if this bug is the same as #277344.

Created a new user with 'sudo adduser' in Failsafe Terminal, then tried

must not be related to existing user data.

[Bug 281045] [NEW] Hang at GNOME login

2008-10-09 Thread Aero Leviathan
Public bug reported:

New install of Intrepid Beta from alternate CD with LVM. Formatted
root/boot/swap partitions, used existing home partition.

System boots fine to GDM, however:

Attempting to login with GNOME hangs at the light-brown screen.

Attempting to login with Failsafe GNOME hangs at the light-brown screen.

Attempting to login with Failsafe Terminal succeeds. Used this to nuke
.gnome2, .gconf, etc. and apt-get update myself to newest everything.
Rebooted. Still no joy.

What other info can I provide?

Thanks for the workaround, but shouldn't this be something that the

[Bug 179625] nullidentd man page and default configuration is wrong

2007-12-31 Thread Aero Leviathan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nullidentd

'man nullidentd' lists syntax as thus:

nullidentd [uid]

Additionally, default supplied /etc/inetd.conf line is:

ident stream tcp nowait nobody /usr/sbin/nullidentd
nullidentd

These are both wrong. Correct syntax is:

nullidentd [-u uid]

Daemon always returns hard-coded default of 'foobar' if suggested
(wrong) syntax is used.

[Bug 108350] Re: PS/2 mouse/mice does not work

2007-04-25 Thread Aero Leviathan
Do you have a reason to conclude that the Virtual PC problem is the same
problem? I think that's premature.

I have been having trouble determining what my motherboard type is
(suggestions?) but I note that in System > Administration > Device
Manager, almost everything seems to be from Silicon Integrated Systems
(SiS). I wonder if Mr Best could tell us whether his configuration is
similar? If so, this may be a duplicate of bug 108221, which does not
seem to have received any attention thus far.

I also note that I did not have any problems with my PS/2 keyboard in
Feisty, which I had meant to include in the original report but forgot.

Bug 108382 seems to be a duplicate of this bug, but the level of
discourse in that report does not seem to be at all constructive... :)

Here you go.

Linux ubuntu 2.6.20-15-generic #2 SMP Sun Apr 15 07:36:31 UTC 2007 i586

This was captured while the system was running from the Desktop CD. I'll
do the hard drive upgrade to 7.04 if you think it will make a
difference. I haven't yet because not having a mouse makes things
difficult...

[Bug 108350] PS/2 mouse/mice does not work

2007-04-20 Thread Aero Leviathan
Public bug reported:

My PS/2 mouse will not work under 7.04, though it worked perfectly under
6.10 with no configuration. Just a plain 2-button+wheel wired mouse.
Ubuntu's running on the bare hardware (no VM).

sudo cat /dev/input/mice and sudo cat /dev/psaux produces no output.
(6.10 was using /dev/input/mice)

Several reports on the forums:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=415872 (mine)
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=415462
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=415318

There are also many reported VirtualPC/USB mouse problems, but I wasn't
sure if those were separate issues.

Some people are saying this is a 'kernel bug' but I couldn't find
anything else about that and I don't know where they got it from.

Sorry I couldn't think of any more information to include; I'll do my
best to answer if you can think of any questions.
