I just got the kernel installed. *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1854798 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1854798 Just discovered that the -73 kernel, due to being unable to load modules on Xenial, uses PS/2 rather than RMI4 to drive the touchpad which works around the bug in any case. Anyway, my problem is similar enough to leave this as a duplicate. Yes, that is a possible fix for the issue, but the point is, the bug has been fixed on the newest releases but not on the 14.04 long term support edition.
