I tested the 4.9.0-040900-generic (4.9.0-040900.201612111631) kernel
from the mainline PPA, same issue.

Looking at the boot output the last message I see is about gdm.service starting.
The machine freezes at the boot output as soon as the mouse cursor appears.

I'm currently using kernel 4.8.0-59.64 from yakkety, anything newer
makes the machine freeze at gdm login, or as a soon as I press enter at

I'm still seeing a similar issue with daily images of Bionic.
At boot, the machine hangs at splash screen.
If I boot without "splash quiet", I can see the last message is about starting 
login session.

I'm not sure this is actually a duplicate of #1505409.

How can I help fixing this? It makes it impossible for me to run ubuntu
with any kernel > 4.8

It seems the issue is due to suspend/resume.
After resuming the system, I noticed the following entries in CUPS access_log:

and the printer is gone. I'm not sure what's performing the delete.

After installing artful, I configured my HP LaserJet M1212nf via network as 
usual via hp-setup.
Installation worked and I could print/scan via network, but next time I needed

If I run gnome-shell from the terminal with the latest (4.13.0-12.13)
kernel, the system freezes.

Running apport-collect while running the 4.8 kernel segfaults:

$ sudo apport-collect 1697450

I can confirm this is a gnome-shell bug.

I tried booting with multi-user.target and manually starting gnome-
shell, it hangs right after showing the mouse pointer on the console
screen.

I also tried starting weston manually, which works fine.

I gave this another try with latest daily, with the same result.

I then installed ubuntu-server and manually installed ubuntu-desktop on
top of it.

At boot, I get to the login screen but, as soon as I select my user from
the gdm menu, everything freezes. I can't see any error in logs when the
freeze happens.

I'm trying to install from the daily Artful desktop image (20170612).

After boot, the gnome session hangs at startup, while the "zoom"
animation is being shown.

I'm not sure how to debug this further, but I had similar issues with the 
installer from Zesty as well (see

With Artful, at least it gets past the splash screen but then it hangs.

Note that the system is currently running Yakkety with no issue.

No, the installer crashes at boot. I tried booting the final image
without "quiet splash" options and it gets stuck right after mentioning
starting the ubuntu-gnome session.

I attached logs from yakkety just to include details about the hardware.

To narrow down the cause, it seems this happens if the second branch in

On a fresh Ubuntu 16.10 (yakkety) install, resolution of mDNS hosts
doesn't work anymore (it used to in xenial)

I can resolve names with avahi-resolve but ssh,ping,etc. fail to
resolve.

After some digging I found out that what's causing it is the "resolve"
option in /etc/nsswitch.conf:

hosts:  files resolve [!UNAVAIL=return] mdns4_minimal
[NOTFOUND=return] dns

Changing it to

hosts:  files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns

(as it was on xenial) makes mDNS work again.

I have the same issue with 53.0.2785.143-0ubuntu1.1307 on 16.10
(yakkety).

After updating from wily to xenial (beta 1 and following updates) the
screen freezes at login as soon as the lightdm splash comes up.

Switching to the console and logging in, I was able to capture the dmesg
output, which shows an OOPS in the drm module.

This happens with all 4.4.0 kernel I've tried so far. Booting with
4.2.0-34-generic (from wily) works fine.

After upgrading from Vivid to Wily, pages using the "Ubuntu light" font 
actually renders with a weight heavier than the regular one in web pages.
This happens with Chrome/Chromium and also the Ubuntu browser.

After manually reinstalling the 0.80-0ubuntu6 version from Vivid (in
place of 0.83-0ubuntu1), the issue is fixed.

efibootmgr can read EFI settings, but any attempt to set a variable
fails silently.

Running a command like "efibootmgr -a -b " exits without output, a
strace shows the following error:

I have the same problem on a Dell D830, Intel graphics, on Oneiric.

The brightness when returning from screensaver is at minimum
(xbrightness shows level 0), brightness keys work and so does
xbrightness -set 100.

Brightness control worked fine for me on Natty.

A note: mount.fuse has an hand-made command line parsing (no getopt), so it 
doesn't recognize -o as an option if no space is put between option and 
argument.
Without space, all options are ignored and defaults are used (hence no 
allow_other).

Enabling debug il pam_mount I can see the command executed is

  $ mount.fuse encfs#/home/ack/.crypt /home/ack/Documents/private
-onosuid,nodev,allow_root

which gives the same behaviour as described previously:

  encfs on /home/ack/Documents/private type fuse.encfs
(rw,nosuid,nodev,default_permissions,user=ack)

Adding a space between -o and options gives this:

  encfs on /home/ack/Documents/private type fuse.encfs
(rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,default_permissions,user=ack)

This seems to be a fuse-utils bug.

I'm using a .pam_mount.conf.xml in my home dir to automatically mount
encfs at login on Ubuntu 10.10

My config file is:





The mount works, but the allow_root option is not honored.
Mounting manually with encfs accepts the option and user_allow_other is enabled 
in fuse.conf, so this is not an issue related to fuse.

The same setup worked fine with 10.04.

Here is the full syslog, intermixed with the action performed. The network is a 
WPA protected network, with shared key.
When selecting the wireless network the first time, the key is asked but 
Authentication is set to "Open System" by default (while "Shared key" is the 
right setting).

I have this problem on Karmic beta, when trying to connect to a WEP network 
with shared key, NM keeps asking the key.
Editing connections, I see "Open System" is selected by default, manually 
changing it to "Shared Key" solves the problem.

I have the same problem, same Ubuntu release and cron version.

If I set a user crontab like this:

15 11 * * * /bin/true

I get this segfault from cron in /var/log/syslog:

This happens with any command run from cron with user crontab.
