[Bug 1950842] [NEW] Bluetooth Adapter Not Detected

2021-11-12 Thread Alex B
Public bug reported:

Attempted every Stackoverflow & related solution I could find, at this
point I can only assume this is a bug.

Installed Ubuntu 21.10 on ASUS-TUF-Gaming-F17-FX706HM-TUF706HM. No
Bluetooth devices can connect.

Exact symptoms:

Click on the taskbar. It says Bluetooth Off. When I expand that, it
gives me the option to turn Bluetooth off. That is not a typo.

Go into Settings->Bluetooth. Sliding button on the top says Bluetooth is
on (button is on the right, filled in purple), but the page says
Bluetooth is off.

[Bug 1945121] [NEW] Ubuntu auto-suspends when I unplug my laptop after not having used it for a few minutes.

2021-09-26 Thread Alex B
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS

I have my power settings so that Ubuntu will never auto-suspend if
plugged in, but will do so after 20 minutes if on battery power.

If I leave it plugged in but untouched for 20 minutes, and then unplug
it (to move it to another room when I come back to it), then it suspends
on the way there.

It would seem more intuitive that unplugging/plugging in would be
considered interaction, and would reset the delay. The expected
behavior, in that case, would be that it gets unplugged, stays on, and
then suspends after 20 minutes if there is no further interaction.

I know any official fix would probably take a while, if one is even
considered. Is there any workaround?

[Bug 1892548] [NEW] Rapidly increasing memory usage of kwin_x11 while watching videos

2020-08-21 Thread Alex B
Public bug reported:

A few days ago, I upgraded from Ubuntu 19 to Ubuntu 20. Ever since then,
whenever I watch a video (Youtube and Netflix in both Firefox and
Chrome, people streaming their webcams in GoToMeeting in Chrome, etc),
the resident memory usage of kwin_x11 climbs up at a rate of about 100MB
per 5-10 seconds to the point where it takes all the ram and swap (see
screenshot attached, though it goes even higher). When it has filled my
ram and swap, it just stops increasing. Then, if I open a new window of
whatever app (or perform some other action on the desktop), I will get a
lag and memory usage will drop down to almost nothing. Letting the video
play will result in memory usage increasing in the same fashion again
and again.

I'm not sure if it's related, but I'm also seeing some segfaults in
dmesg, but I was unable to correlate the timing of the segfault with
high memory usage so far:

[Bug 1756508] Re: Gnome-shell CPU load dramatically high and stuck high with Eclipse

2018-04-01 Thread Alex B
Update.
I stopped using Eclipse on Ubuntu for now, but I'm just facing the same problem
again, now with Emacs 25.2.1. It appeared when I maximised the window and then
tried to reduce it.
gnome-shell CPU load reached 95% and after a while decreased down to 70%, but
it's not stable, sometime increases again to some peaks...
Seems not Eclipse related and seems Emacs too can trigger the same troubles.
Please tell me if you need further logs - not sure I can reuse the same
reference as above for apport-collect...

2018-03-24 Thread Alex B
Hello,
I'm not expert at all, but is seems strange to me that the the workload keeps
high even in the (rare) event I could kill Eclipse. Would the sw-rendering
toolkit keep alive in the case Eclipse is killed ? Would be a bug in Eclipse ?

apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected artful

** Description changed:

  Hello,

I recently upgraded Ubuntu from 16.04 to 17.10. Since I did, I cannot use
Eclipse any more.
I can start Eclipse, but as soon as I try to de-maximize it, gnome-shell CPU
load raises to 80%-95% and remains that level. I ¥t sometimes drops a bit down
to 70% but still keeps high and blocks everything. Even if by chance and
patience I succeed closing Eclipse, the CPU load keeps high.
Until now I found no way to recover.

  Ubuntu 17.10
  Gnome 3.26.2
  Runs in Virtual box
  Core i7x2
  8 GB RAM

  Eclipse Photon 4.8 M6
But same happened with Oyxgen 4.7.2

[Bug 1756508] Re: Gnome-shell cpu load dramatically high and stuck high with Eclipse

2018-03-17 Thread Alex B
Well, might appear out of topic but ... The same problem happens with Firefox,
when watching a video for example. gnome-shell now peaks at 90% !
Is there any kind of logs I can check here ?

[Bug 1756508] [NEW] Gnome-shell cpu load dramatically high and stuck high with Eclipse

2018-03-17 Thread Alex B
Public bug reported:

Hello,

I recently upgraded Ubuntu from 16.04 to 17.10. Since I did, I cannot use
Eclipse any more.
I can start Eclipse, but as soon as I try to de-maximize it, gnome-shell CPU
load raises to 80%-95% and remains that level. I ¥t sometimes drops a bit down
to 70% but still keeps high and blocks everything. Even if by chance and
patience I succeed closing Eclipse, the CPU load keeps high.
Until now I found no way to recover.

Ubuntu 17.10
Gnome 3.26.2
Runs in Virtual box
Core i7x2
8 GB RAM

Eclipse Photon 4.8 M6
But same happened with Oyxgen 4.7.2

Other info needed, please let me know... not sure how to circle this
closer. Once it happens, it's over .

[Bug 1696305] Re: High CPU usage in gnome-shell just redrawing the screen (Firefox is running)

2018-03-14 Thread Alex B
Sorry I'm totally newbie here and with ubuntu, but I regularly face the same
problem with Ubuntu 17,10 in Virtualbox, when I run eclipse:
Version: Oxygen.2 Release (4.7.2)
Build id: 20171218-0600

Either this happens at startup of Eclipse, or after a while with no obvious
reason...
Seems this is unrecoverable. _in the case it happened at startup of Eclipse,
top reached up to 95% load for gmome-shell, and minimum was 70%. After 10
minutes, I gave up and restarted the machine.

Not sure how to help more for now :/

[Bug 1677198] Re: OpenVPN not Working in 17.04 via "Import a saved VPN configuration"

2017-11-11 Thread Alex B.
Hi again,

(follow-up to #18 & #19 posts)

I found out that "Display Mode" in Settings -> Devices -> Displays was set to
"Join Displays".
Setting it to "Single Display" solves for me the issue of windows appearing on
the 2nd monitor.

[Bug 1677198] Re: OpenVPN not Working in 17.04 via "Import a saved VPN configuration"

2017-11-11 Thread Alex B.
Hello,
I had a problem importing configuration files to create a VPN connection.
Nothing would happen after clicking on "Import from file..".
After countless attempts (and only after turning my 2nd monitor on) I realized
that the "Select file to import" window opens on the 2nd monitor and can't be
moved to the main monitor.
After selecting the file to import and clicking "Open" on the 2nd monitor, the
rest of the procedure to add a VPN worked fine and I was able to set a VPN
connection.
I hope this helps.

PS: The same problem occurs with other applications.
Ex. Trying to open a document in LibreOffice, the window to select the file
opens on the 2nd
monitor.

[Bug 1485992] Re: After I exit a game on steam, I did a system update and the crash apperd.

2015-08-18 Thread Alex B.
The only work around that I have found is to go back to your old kernel
that was installed.

In this case, it's usually this one:

3.19.0-15-generic

The work around (in terminal /konsole):

The offending packages are the following that cause that error:

linux-headers-3.19.0-26
linux-headers-3.19.0-26-generic
linux-image-3.19.0-26-generic
linux-image-extra-3.19.0-26-generic

The old packages for the older kernel when it did work:

linux-headers-3.19.0-15
linux-headers-3.19.0-15-generic
linux-image-3.19.0-15-generic
linux-image-extra-3.19.0-15-generic

What you do is this (if it says they're already installed don't worry,
this is also for people those purged these packages from before):

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y linux-headers-3.19.0-15 linux-headers-3.19.0-15-generic
linux-image-3.19.0-15-generic linux-image-extra-3.19.0-15-generic
sudo apt-get purge -y linux-headers-3.19.0-26 linux-headers-3.19.0-26-generic
linux-image-3.19.0-26-generic linux-image-extra-3.19.0-26-generic
sudo update-grub2

When this is done, you might get an error about the grub hidden timeout
being set to a non zero number is no longer supported, that's not a real
problem, I can tell you how to fix it if it really bothers you, though.

Now, that all of this is done:

Close all your open applications and type in:

sudo reboot

When Ubuntu and forks reboots, login or let the auto login script bring
you to the desktop.

Assuming you have the AMD / ATI Catalyst installed: (in terminal /
konsole):

sudo amdcccle

When it opens, check all your setting and if you need to make changes do
so at this time, since you're running as a super user, you can also
change the resolution should you feel you need to do this at this time.
When done, close that application and start Steam.

From here, you should be fine. Just make sure that when you go to
update your system, to not allow that bad kernel to be installed onto
your system again. I recommend using Synaptic package manager to deal
with unruly packages. You can pick and choose what packages are updated
and which are left well enough alone.

I hope this helps!

[Bug 1485931] [NEW] fglrx-updates-core 2:15.200-0ubuntu4: fglrx-updates-core kernel module failed to build

2015-08-18 Thread Alex B.
Public bug reported:

The default kernel 3.19.0-26-generic in Lubuntu 64-bit AMD64 seems to
have trouble with the additional restricted drivers from AMD / ATI,
despite being listed as compatible. This doesn't happen to me in any
other Ubuntu distribution or fork, only Lubuntu.

What happens is that the driver is in fact installed but isn't reading the
configuration of my actual card installed. It gives the maximum resolution
settings of 4k, which this specific card isn't capable of at all. I've tried
the old hold over of using;
sudo amdconfig -f --initial

That normally will fix my problem after I reboot the machine but in this
case, it does not. I know my card is 100% compatible with this driver
from AMD as it works in Xubuntu 15.04 32-bit 686 & 64-bit x86_64 kernels
flawlessly.

[Bug 1394251] [NEW] package steam 1:1.0.0.48-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

2014-11-19 Thread Alex B.
Public bug reported:

The game crashed while I was playing Team Fortress 2, koth_viaduct_event
(Eyeaduct). I also noticed on the character configuration screen there
was the sound of static, it would go away when I closed that menu and
come back when I would open it again.

The actual package for Steam failed to install in the Ubuntu Store app
and I believe it has something to do with the extra add-on for the
fonts, which is set to be automatically downloaded and install with
Steam from Valve.

I was however able to download Steam and the addition font library
without incident from the terminal with the following command.

sudo apt-get install steam

The Steam launcher installed all the prerequisite files and downloaded
and installed the run-time files with no trouble at all.

[Bug 1347405] Re: Atempting 14.04 install into LVM striped drives 'grub-install /dev/sda' failed

2014-07-27 Thread Alex b
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1059827 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1059827

Hi Guys,

The first issue was the partitioning left no room for the grub on /dev/sda as
Philip mentioned.
( I no longer get grub-install /dev/sda' failed ) Thanks Philip

Now the original setup does work... if its not encrypted.
The desktop installer does not insert the request for password in the grub boot
to unlock the LUKS partitions so that the LVM system can be seen. The boot now
fails on waiting for the encrypted disk.

Since this is a different issue, I'll see if I can convert this to a question.
Perhaps someone has done this before?

 # Encrypted partitions /dev/sda3 /dev/sdb3
 # /sda2 is /boot partition non-encrypted non-LVM

  pvcreate /dev/sda3
  pvcreate /dev/sdb3
 sudo vgcreate Stripe2SSD /dev/sda3 /dev/sdc3
 sudo lvcreate -i 2 -I 256 -L 247000M Stripe2SSD -n root
 sudo lvcreate -i 2 -I 256 -L 2M Stripe2SSD -n swap

 # manual install and Assigned the /, swap. /boot
Boot fails waiting for device ( the encrypted partition )

Thanks for your help!

PS,
The mini.iso does not seem to support stripe -i -I setup to get the speed of
raid0 and the flexibility of LVM.
Am I missing something?

[Bug 1347405] [NEW] Atempting 14.04 install into LVM striped drives 'grub-install /dev/sda' failed

2014-07-22 Thread Alex b
Public bug reported:

May need better support for LVM during instilation.. (please)
Adding a LVM option line in teh installer might be all it needs

Set up I need is Full disk encryption+LVM+striped across 2 SSD drives on a
laptop(2 drive max)
mdadm raid 0 is not the same as the disk will not match as one will dual boot
gaming platform Win7 for planetside2

What I was doing...
sudo pvcreate /dev/sda1
sudo pvcreate /dev/sdb1

sudo vgcreate Stripe2SSD /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1
sudo lvcreate -i 2 -I 8 -L 42M Stripe2SSD
sudo mkfs.ext3 -m 0 /dev/Stripe2SSD/lvol0

Install ubuntu and manually config disk.
Install went fine but
 'grub-install /dev/sda' failed
said put the boot loader in the LVM when a while and it crashed.

Since I cant patition inside the LVM from the installer either so I made each
partition match and created 3 LVMs, /, /home,swap...
  pvcreate /dev/sda1
  pvcreate /dev/sda3
  pvcreate /dev/sda5
  pvcreate /dev/sdc1
  pvcreate /dev/sdc3
  pvcreate /dev/sdc5
 sudo vgcreate Stripe2SSD /dev/sda3 /dev/sdc3
 sudo vgcreate Stripe2SSDboot /dev/sda1 /dev/sdc1
 sudo vgcreate Stripe2SSDswap /dev/sda5 /dev/sdc5
 sudo lvcreate -i 2 -I 256 -L 247000M Stripe2SSD
 sudo lvcreate -i 2 -I 256 -L 18000M Stripe2SSDboot
 sudo lvcreate -i 2 -I 256 -L 15000M Stripe2SSDswap
manual install and Asigned the /,/home, swap + format
Install went fine but
 'grub-install /dev/sda' failed
# said install the boot in /dev/sda ... worked a bit.. then it crashed before
finishing the install

Description:Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
Release:14.04
- expected grub to use the location the boot location it used before..
- It would be really nice to have the LVM options in the simple partition
choice, or add it to the menu in the advanced installer.

Love Ubuntu, Thanks for all the work,

[Bug 779404] [NEW] clang++ fails to compile STL-using C++ out of the box

2011-05-08 Thread Alex B
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: clang

clang++ uses GCC's STL, but appears to only support versions up to 4.4:
if you try to compile a trivial program on Natty Narwhal, it will fail:

cat< foo.cc
#include
int main() {return 0;}
EOF
clang++ --verbose foo.cc

Note in the output how it starts looking for GCC includes starting with
version 4.4, then 4.3, etc...

However Natty Narwhal only has 4.5 installed, and clang package
(incorrectly) lists libstdc++ dependency as >=4.5. Installing g++-4.4
fixes the problem, but dependency should be fixed up.
