[Bug 1284926] Re: [Lenovo B490s] fwts: FAILED [HIGH] DevConfigDiffAfterS3

2014-03-12 Thread Alex Hung
Checking the results.log, it is found two missing Input Devices:

  Device:  event4
  Device Name: Lenovo Optical USB Mouse
  Phy: usb-:00:14.0-1/input0

  Device:  mouse0
  Device Name: Lenovo Optical USB Mouse
  Phy: usb-:00:14.0-1/input0

This can be safely ignored.

[Bug 1284926] Re: [Lenovo B490s] fwts: FAILED [HIGH] DevConfigDiffAfterS3

2014-03-12 Thread Alex Hung
After device difference is as below:

Network Controller configurations differ, before:
  PCI: :03:00.0, VID: e4:27, Class: 02:80 (Network controller)
  Config:
: e4 14 27 47 06 00 18 00 01 00 80 02 10 00 00 00  ..'G
0010: 04 00 50 f3 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00  ..P.
0020: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 e4 14 08 06
0030: 00 00 00 00 40 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 07 01 00 00  @...

versus after:
  PCI: :03:00.0, VID: e4:27, Class: 02:80 (Network controller)
  Config:
: e4 14 27 47 06 00 10 00 01 00 80 02 10 00 00 00  ..'G
0010: 04 00 50 f3 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00  ..P.
0020: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 e4 14 08 06
0030: 00 00 00 00 40 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 07 01 00 00  @...

Carefully comparing them found BYTE 6 is changed from 0x18 to 0x10, i.e.
BIT3 changed. According to PCI spec, it is Status Register and its
interrupt Status (This read-only bit reflects the state of the
interrupt in the device/function.) This can indicate the device was be
used when fwts reads its pci registers.

This can also be safely ignored.

[Bug 1270079] Re: [Lenovo T540p, W540] Backlight interfaces not fully working

2014-03-04 Thread Alex Hung
From BIOS AML, the brightness function (ex. _BCM) checks a table before
making actual brightness adjustment. The table is located in DSDT and
attached below:

Name (BRTW, Package (0x12)
{
0x64,
0x64,
0x01,
0x03,
0x05,
0x08,
0x0C,
0x11,
0x16,
0x21,
0x28,
0x2E,
0x36,
0x3E,
0x47,
0x50,
0x5A,
0x64
})

This looks like a BIOS design. We need a BIOS update to remove the
comparison to the table. Kernel cannot work around this bug at all
except removing the uses of ACPI backlight control.

There is no harm to remove the comparison for Windows 8 as it does not
calls _BCM for brightness.

ACPICA Exception AE_NOT_EXIST during execution of method GBAA
ACPICA Exception AE_NOT_EXIST during execution of method STOS
ACPICA Exception AE_NOT_EXIST during execution of method GBAA

[Bug 1264071] Re: [Dell Inspiron 2350] Multiple HIGH / CRITICAL failures found in fwts report

2014-02-09 Thread Alex Hung
This bug must be fixed in BIOS; however, _PLD

6.1.8 _PLD (Physical Device Location)
This optional object is a method that conveys to OSPM a general description of
the physical location of a device’s external connection point. The _PLD may be
child object for any ACPI Namespace object the system wants to describe. This
information can be used by system software to describe to the user which
specific connector or device input mechanism may be used for a given task or
may need user intervention for correct operation.

For example, the _PLD for usb ports (as in this case) are defined their
color, side and so on (please refer to ACPI spec for details). These
information are not used in Ubuntu to my knowledge. I think they can be
safely ignored.

[Bug 1264071] Re: [Dell Inspiron 2350] Multiple HIGH / CRITICAL failures found in fwts report

2014-02-09 Thread Alex Hung
_PLD in DSDT is declared as below:

Method (_PLD, 0, Serialized)
{
Name (PLDP, Package (0x01)
{
Buffer (0x10)
{
/*  */0x81, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00,
0x00, 0x00, 0x00,
/* 0008 */0x30, 0x1C, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00,
0x00, 0x00, 0x00
}
})
CreateBitField (DerefOf (Index (PLDP, Zero)), 0x40, VIS)
If (LNot (And (PR2S (0x0D), PR2)))
{
And (VIS, Zero, VIS)
}

Return (PLDP)
}

The problem occurs @ CreateBitField (DerefOf (Index (PLDP, Zero)), 0x40,
VIS).

In ACPI Spec, Index is defined as below:
 Syntax
Index (Source, Index, Destination) = ObjectReference
 Arguments
Source is evaluated to a buffer, string, or package data type. Index is
evaluated to an integer. The reference to the nth object (where n = Index)
within Source is optionally stored as a reference into Destination.

An integer is 64bit long and its bit index is from 0 to 63; however, the
above statement tries to reference to bit 64 and therefore it out of
range. If bit 64 in PLDP is needed, it must be referenced correctly.

[Bug 1263624] Re: [HP Pavilion 14] Critical failure KlogAcpiCrtInvalidThreshold found in fwts report

2014-01-09 Thread Alex Hung
Using fwdt to read _TZ.TZ01._CRT returns 0. This is 0 Kelvin and -273
Celsius. This is a firmware bug but _CRT is disabled by kernel, and is
as _CRT does not exist.

Impact: _CRT is used for OS to shut down a system when the temperature
is reached. This may sound serious but there are other similar
temperature trip points: 1. _HOT = 378.2 Kelvin (=105 Celsius) that will
put system into hibernation, 2. EC temperature shutdown (unknown) and 3.
hardware temperature shutdown (unknown).

2013-12-25 Thread Alex Hung
cat /proc/cpuinfo found the cpu family : 22 (=16h)

According thread 2 https://lkml.org/lkml/2013/5/21/260, family 16h has
no perfctr_core and therefore it is normal to have the error message.
Later kernel also removes the WARN_ON message.

[Bug 1252154] Re: [Dell Inspiron 3135] Multiple CRITICAL/HIGH failures in fwts report

2013-12-24 Thread Alex Hung
klog: HIGH Kernel message: [ 0.831339] [Firmware Bug]: ACPI: No _BQC
method, cannot determine initial brightness is not really a bug.

_BQC is used to get current brightness from BIOS. In ACPI, it was not
listed as mandatory, but it is much needed functional-wise. Linux kernel
will keep trace the current brightness level if _BQC is not present.

We'd like to keep this HIGH as we want to ODM to fix it during
development cycle as much as possible, but this does not hurt any
functions.

[Bug 1252154] Re: [Dell Inspiron 3135] Multiple CRITICAL/HIGH failures in fwts report

2013-12-16 Thread Alex Hung
The critical errors from the method test is caused by acpica.

Quoted from cking's email:

The core issue is that a traversal of an region linked list is looping
forever in ACPICA causing it not to return and making some fwts method
tests to fail on some platforms. I can reproduce the bug in acpiexec,
so the bug is not a fwts bug, but an underlying ACPICA interpreter bug.
I've given it a few hours of debugging and reverting back to ancient
versions of ACPICA and I can't see why the list is getting corrupted, so
I'm now deferring it to Intel.

[Bug 1251570] Re: [Dell Inspiron 3137] WARNING message in klog (reported as HIGH failure in fwts)

2013-11-26 Thread Alex Hung
DMAR DMA Remapping Reporting is ACPI table defined in Intel®
Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O which says The system BIOS
is responsible for detecting the remapping hardware functions in the
platform and for locating the memory-mapped remapping hardware registers
in the host system address space.

It is clearly that this system reports the base address is zero which is
invalid. In fact, it claims the base address starts from 0 and it will
conflicts with other hardware.

It is my guess that BIOS set base address to zero as this is a celeron
cpu which does not support this advance. This is not a correct way to do
it. BIOS should not report DMAR in ACPI at all.

Fortunately, it is detected by kernel and DMAR is not used.

[Bug 1249256] Re: hp-wmi calls WMI 0x05 instead of WMI 0x1b interfaces in new BIOS

2013-11-25 Thread Alex Hung
Patch is available in Linux 3.13-rc1 as below.

commit 997daa1bd9aca412ab97955a35b26c460c0ec7a4

hp-wmi: detect 2009 BIOS or later flag by WMI 0x0d for wireless cmd

Some HP BIOS has dummy WMI 0x05 cmd and it causes wireless set cmd to fail.
This patch fixes the problem by detecting 2009 BIOS or later flag which
determines whether WMI 0x1b is supported and is used to replace WMI 0x05.

2013-11-20 Thread Alex Hung
I tested patch @ #11, and brightness does not work. I also used the
drivrs/acpi/video.c in kernel 3.5, and brightness does not work either.

I executed lsmod | grep 915 and found this Haswell system does not
have i915 running. The brightness may not be working for more than one
reason - including kernel 3.2 does not support Haswell, which is
supported in Kernel 3.5.

According to ACPI spec, _DOS indicates that the system BIOS is capable
of automatically switching the active display output or controlling the
brightness of the LCD.

However, kernel commit b03738430c7537d5f87948e0b35d8aaf2688c6b4 works around it
a while ago:

ACPI video: Still use ACPI backlight control if _DOS doesn't exist

(ACPI video: Harden video bus adding.)

Some platforms don't have _DOS control method, but the ACPI

We should not invoke _DOS for these platforms.

[Bug 1249978] Re: [Dell Latitude E6440] [Firmware Bug]: ACPI(PEGP) defines _DOD but not _DOS

2013-11-18 Thread Alex Hung
Checking drivers/acpi/video.c also found it outputs a warning message
but with no control flow changes as below:

static int acpi_video_bus_check(struct acpi_video_bus *video)
{
...
/* Does this device support video switching? */
if (video-cap._DOS || video-cap._DOD) {
if (!video-cap._DOS) {
printk(KERN_WARNING FW_BUG
ACPI(%s) defines _DOD but not _DOS\n,
acpi_device_bid(video-device));
}
video-flags.multihead = 1;
status = 0;
}
}

Therefore it is safe to ignore it. We will also investigate whether it
is appropriate to lower the severity in fwts.

[Bug 1249256] [NEW] hp-wmi calls WMI 0x05 instead of WMI 0x1b interfaces in new BIOS

2013-11-08 Thread Alex Hung
Public bug reported:

Some hp systems have faulty wmi 0x05 interfaces (HPWMI_WIRELESS_QUERY);
however, BIOS still reports 0x05 is supported and it will be used in hp-
wmi instead of wmi 0x1b (HPWMI_WIRELESS2_QUERY). This causes rkfill
block and rfkill unblock fail to change the state of wireless devices
in these particular systems.

HP defines wmi 0x05 as This command is deprecated starting with Bios09
platforms and is replaced by Command Type 1Bh. Check Features Reporting
(Command Type 0Dh, Bit 3) for new command support.

[Bug 1143312] Re: HP ENVY 4 Sleekbook - Errors detected when running FWTS sleep tests

2013-07-04 Thread Alex Hung
Finally upstream has a patch! This shall be included in kernel 3.11. It
may be a good idea to SRU it after a while when nobody in upstream
complains about it.

commit 2fa97feb4406c546b52e35b6b6c50cb8f63425d2
Author: Lan Tianyu tianyu@intel.com
Date:   Wed Jun 5 02:27:50 2013 +

ACPI: Add CMOS RTC Operation Region handler support

On HP Folio 13-2000, the BIOS defines a CMOS RTC Operation Region and
the EC's _REG methord accesses that region. Thus an appropriate
address space handler must be registered for that region before the
EC driver is loaded.

Introduce a mechanism for adding CMOS RTC address space handlers.
Register an ACPI scan handler for CMOS RTC devices such that, when
a device of that kind is detected during an ACPI namespace scan, a
common CMOS RTC operation region address space handler will be
installed for it.

2. smbios - Find and Check SMBIOS Table Entry Point

As they are both checking smbios, they should be merged to a test, ex.

[Bug 1190903] Re: Unable to control brightness with fglrx driver

2013-06-24 Thread Alex Hung
From BIOS perspectives, there is no difference with with either fglrx or
radeon. As brightness works with radeon driver, this seems to be a
driver issue.

I also verified the Oneiric that was used in OEM image with two
different versions of fglrx: (1) the one in OME image, (2) one from
jockey - brightness works with (1) but not (2). It is suspected that AMD
did not merge the fix in (1) was not merged back to fglrx.

ACPI / EC: Restart transaction even when the IBF flag set

BugLink: http://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1186062

commit 28fe5c825f8e15744d04c7c1b8df197950923ecd upstream.

The EC driver works abnormally with IBF flag always set.
IBF means The host has written a byte of data to the command
or data port, but the embedded controller has not yet read it.
If IBF is set in the EC status and not cleared, this will cause
all subsequent EC requests to fail with a timeout error.

Change the EC driver so that it doesn't refuse to restart a
transaction if IBF is set in the status. Also increase the
number of transaction restarts to 5, as it turns out that 2
is not sufficient in some cases.

This bug happens on several different machines (Asus V1S,
Dell Latitude E6530, Samsung R719, Acer Aspire 5930G,
Sony Vaio SR19VN and others).

This is included in UBUNTU: Ubuntu-lts-3.5.0-34.55.

[Bug 1132649] Re: display brightness is very low by default

2013-05-31 Thread Alex Hung
ASUS 401A has some fundamental problems with its BIOS ASL code.

First, its _BCL returns

[  344.088661] Brightness[0] = 100
[  344.088669] Brightness[1] = 77
[  344.088672] Brightness[2] = 60
[  344.088675] Brightness[3] = 48
[  344.088677] Brightness[4] = 43
[  344.088680] Brightness[5] = 38
[  344.088682] Brightness[6] = 33
[  344.088684] Brightness[7] = 28
[  344.088687] Brightness[8] = 23
[  344.088689] Brightness[9] = 18
[  344.088692] Brightness[10] = 10

However, _BCL should returns elements like (from B.6.2 of ACPI spec
4.0a)

  Return (Package(7){
  80, // level when machine has full power
  50,// level when machine is on batteries
  // other supported levels:
  20, 40, 60, 80, 100}
}

Secondly, its _BQC returns the nth level of brightness, but ACPI spec
requires An Integer containing the current brightness level (must be
one of the values returned from the _BCLmethod). For example, when the
brightness is 10, _BQC returns 0. When the brightness is 18, it
returns 1. This causes a lot of confusion to kernel who does not how to
control brightness. Last, _BQC always returns 0 on boot time.

However, I don't think ASUS is going to release BIOS fixes for it.
Fortunately, the brightness is not too dim to be visible (not completely
dark).

[Bug 1158129] Re: fwts_test reports high falures for hibernation/suspend test

2013-05-16 Thread Alex Hung
I noticed upstream kernel has a commit #b8df197950923ecd that may
workaround this as below:

commit 28fe5c825f8e15744d04c7c1b8df197950923ecd
Author: Lan Tianyu tianyu@intel.com
Date:   Mon May 6 03:23:40 2013 +

ACPI / EC: Restart transaction even when the IBF flag set

This apparently is a workaround but it fixes the AE_TIME errors and
ACPI: EC: input buffer is not empty, aborting transaction.

[Bug 1158129] Re: fwts_test reports high falures for hibernation/suspend test

2013-05-12 Thread Alex Hung
From the log, it is the EC firmware/hardware that does not respond
timely. This can be that EC was too busy for a short period of time as
too many requests  generated.

This bug is very similar to LP1145803. More information @
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1145803/comments/6

Fortunately, it was BAT0_BST (battery status) and AC._PSR (AC status)
that fails and this can be updated later with little function loss.

[Bug 1167760] Re: [HP 1000] Screen backlight is off after startup.

2013-05-06 Thread Alex Hung
This bug is caused by BIOS reporting zero in _BQC when system boots up.
As a result, kernel will set the brightness to zero and the screen is
dimmed to complete black.

The attached patch adds a quirk to ignore the initial _BQC value and set
the brightness to max.

[Bug 1153421] Re: HP Envy 23 AIO - Various FWTS failures when testing

2013-04-09 Thread Alex Hung
As Colin's comments in #5, this is a firmware's bug that needs BIOS's
attention; however, _GTF is needed for IDE controllers and HDDs and
optional for SATA controllers and HDDs. Failing to evaluate _GTF in
today's systems has no impacts to functionality and stability.

[Bug 1152458] Re: HP Pavilion g7 - Assorted FWTS HIGH failures during testing

2013-04-09 Thread Alex Hung
Please ignore #5 to to #8 as I checked the incorrect log file.

FAILED [HIGH] KlogHpwmiUnknownEventid: Test 1, HIGH Kernel message: [
2477.032359] hp_wmi: Unknown event_id - 10 - 0x1

The above error was generated because new event id is defined by HP but
is yet included in current hp_wmi driver. A patch was submitted to
upstream
(http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.linux.drivers.platform.x86.devel/4276)
but it yet accepted by the maintainer.

However, there are no impacts but only an error message. This should not
be a cert-blocker.

The above errors are actually one error as a result of calling chain:
_PTS-ESDT-RCM0, and it fails when accessing RCM0 as RTC CMOS registers
aren't currently supported in Linux kernel.

Fortunately, \_SB_.WMID.ESDT is the last function in _PTS and BIOS has
completed everything it tends. No or few impacts are generated by the
absence of RTC CMOS handling.
