[Bug 1507443] [NEW] intel-microcode seems to result in an invalid initrd

2015-10-18 Thread Alex M. Lowe
Public bug reported:

The intel-microcode package seems to have caused my initrd to be
corrupt, only extracting the microcode bin file into
/kernel/microcode/x86/GenuineIntel.bin

With kernel 4.1 and earlier, this seems not to be an issue, and Ubuntu
can still load cryptsetup to decrypt an encrypted root (how I first
noticed this). However, as of kernel 4.2 this seems to no longer be the
case.

Attached is an initrd created with intel-microcode installed. file
detects it as an uncompressed cpio archive (as opposed to a gzip'd one
created without intel-microcode installed), and it only extracts a
'kernel' directory.

[Bug 986405] [NEW] No sound in default TuxGuitar install from Software Centre

2012-04-20 Thread Alex M. Lowe
Public bug reported:

The default TuxGuitar app from the Software Centre (in both Oneiric and
Precise) installs tuxguitar with only the ALSA support. Installing
timidity and tuxguitar-jsa, as well as setting TuxGuitar to use timidity
(which can be done simply by not installing the alsa support) fixes
this.

I believe the only fix necessary is to require timidity and tuxguitar-
jsa.

[Bug 877595] [NEW] Installation of a large number of packages freezes

2011-10-18 Thread Alex M. Lowe
Public bug reported:

Sometimes, an installation performed by Muon freezes.

Qaptworker does not crash. Muon does not crash. dpkg simply stops
running. The only solution I have found for this is to manually kill
qaptworker and muon and run dpkg --configure -a myself.

I have attached an excerpt of history.log from in installation where
this problem occurs.

I have yet to find a specific package which will cause this problem
consistently.

I have filed this bug under qapt rather than muon because I believe the
issue is with qaptworker.

Re: [Bug 655078] Re: Beta 10.10 Nvidia update broke Sony Vaio VPCF136FM installation

2011-02-06 Thread Alex M. Lowe
The next version of Ubuntu already includes version 260.29 in its
repositories (a version that works with the F series). It is likely
that the latest version of the driver will be included in the final
release and has simply yet to be included.

Many of the members of the swat team are also members of the team who
maintain X and the Nvidia and ATI drivers in Ubuntu itself. The
x-updates ppa is simply to provide newer packages for already-released
versions.

On 6 February 2011 08:26, Michael E. Adams 655...@bugs.launchpad.net wrote:
I finally got around to trying ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates and
installed their latest nvidia driver (270.18). I just wanted to report
that it works great on my system (the one that I opened this bug report
with). My thanks to the swat team.

 Could someone answer this question?

Is Ubuntu going to use the efforts of this swat team for the next release
of Ubuntu or will this nvidia issue be left unaddressed as it has been for
Ubuntu 10.10 on my Sony Vaio VPCF136FM. Does Ubuntu consider nvidia driver
issues, because they are closed binaries, not to be under their care or is
this ppa used by Ubuntu as part of their development process?

 Thanks,
 Mike

 Title:
Beta 10.10 Nvidia update broke Sony Vaio VPCF136FM installation

Status in “nvidia-graphics-drivers” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

 Bug description:
I have been using 10.10 beta on my new Sony Vaio VPCF136FM configured
  as follows:

  Processor: i7-740QM / 1.73 GHz
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M GPU
  Display: 16.4 / 1600 x 900
  Memory: 6 GB

Ubuntu can't sense my display to set up native x-server properly - it
 defaults to 800x600.
I installed the NVIDIA driver when I originally installed 10.10 beta. Worked
 perfectly.
Yesterday's (10/04/10) NVIDIA driver update broke my system - won't boot
into desktop - locks up the system. I had to reboot into safe mode and remove
the new NVIDIA driver. I am now only able to run in safe mode 800x600 because
 Ubuntu can't detect my display.

  More info:

I tried reinstalling the NVIDIA driver. Rebooted to a failsafe root terminal.
Ran: nvidia-xconfig and received the following message:

  Using X configuration file:
      /etc/X11/xorg.conf

  VALIDATION ERROR:
      Data incomplete in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
Undefined Device (null) referenced by Screen Default Screen.

  Backup file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' as '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'

New X configuration file written to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'

I try to reboot and I get a blank screen with a color background. I
  can't Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot, I can't Ctrl-Alt F# to a virtual terminal.
I have to do a cold restart (i.e. hold the power button down to shutdown
and then reboot into failsafe graphics mode so I can remove the NVIDIA
driver to regain control of my system again).

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

 Bug description:
The assist and vaio buttons on Sony Vaio F series laptops are not
recognized (although ACPI events are still sent).

In checking dmesg, I receive the following errors:

  For the assist button:
  [84044.545156] sony-laptop: Unknown event: 0x100 0xa6
  [84044.946497] sony-laptop: Unknown event: 0x100 0x26

These are consistent with a keypress and a key release.

I have included a patch to sony-laptop.c (contained in
drivers/platform/x86 in the Linux source). This patch was written for
2.6.35, but works on 2.6.37 (downloaded tonight from

[Bug 663887] Re: Left internal speaker not working in Maverick [Sony Vaio F11 / ALC275]

2011-01-02 Thread Alex M. Lowe
Completely powering off your machine instead of simply rebooting should
(and has in my experience) fix this.

The most recent kernel in the Ubuntu repositories doesn't work, so I
don't believe the daily images will work.

The most recent mainline kernel (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v2.6.37-rc8-natty/) works, though.

2011-01-01 Thread Alex M. Lowe
I can confirm that kernel 2.6.37-rc8 fixes this particular problem
(sound only on right speaker) in Natty.

In Maverick (I have not tried Lucid but bug 670570 reports this problem
in Lucid), installing the ubuntu-audio-dev drivers from 28 Dec. (at
least) work.

I am still unable, however, to get my laptop (F13)'s internal microphone
to work (although plugging a microphone in works fine).

[Bug 581778] Re: No internal mic / line-in on Intel HDA G45 DEVIBX / Realtek ALC 275

2011-01-01 Thread Alex M. Lowe
I'm on a Vaio VPCF1390X. In Maverick with kernel 2.6.36 I was able to
get the line-in microphone to work with the Ubuntu-audio-dev ALSA
snapshots.

In Natty, the microphone does not seem to work out of the box, but I was
able to get the line-in mic to work with mainline kernel 2.6.37-rc8
(which also resolves bug 663887).

Internal microphone is still a problem.

 Bug description:
Microsoft has a majority market share in the new desktop PC marketplace.
This is a bug, which Ubuntu is designed to fix.

Non-free software is holding back innovation in the IT industry,
restricting access to IT to a small part of the world's population and
limiting the ability of software developers to reach their full potential,
globally. This bug is widely evident in the PC industry.

 Steps to repeat:

 1. Visit a local PC store.

 What happens:
 2. Observe that a majority of PCs for sale have non-free software
 pre-installed.
 3. Observe very few PCs with Ubuntu and free software pre-installed.

 What should happen:
 1. A majority of the PCs for sale should include only free software like
 Ubuntu.
 2. Ubuntu should be marketed in a way such that its amazing features and
benefits would be apparent and known by all.
 3. The system shall become more and more user friendly as time passes.

[Bug 616023] Re: nVidia card : X won't start since 1.9 update, no screens found

2010-08-20 Thread Alex M. Lowe
As of tonight (after updating to kernel version 2.6.35-17 and xserver-
xorg-core 1.8.99.905-1ubuntu3), the ignoreABI workaround works for me.

My hardware is a GeForce 8600M GT (I'm wondering if ignoreABI working
vs. not working has anything to do with what generation of chips is
used).
