[Bug 1369969] [NEW] Middle button emulation works on lower buttons but not upper buttons on HP EliteBook 9470m

2014-09-16 Thread Alexander Gitter
Public bug reported:

On an HP EliteBook Folio 9470m laptop, middle-button emulation (pressing
the left and right buttons simultaneously) works for the two buttons
"below" the trackpad (farther away from the keyboard) but not for the
two buttons "above" the trackpad (closer to the keyboard). Both sets of
left and right buttons function normally as left and right "mouse"
buttons when not pressed together. (Pressing the upper-left and lower-
right (or vice-versa) buttons simultaneously also does not simulate a
middle-button event.)

Just did a dist-upgrade (and rebooted the computer).
Unfortunately, yes, this still occurs which makes Ubuntu unusable on this
machine.

As a workaround, right click on the title bar and choose the "Resize"

[Bug 1313459] Re: Screen corruption with Radeon 6670

2014-04-28 Thread Alexander Gitter
I did some more testing today.
It seems one simple way to reproduce this is to just move the mouse pointer
around on the login screen. At one point this even lead to a kernel panic (see
attachement).

Again, setting the power profile to something other than "default" seems
to get rid of the problem.

[Bug 1313459] Re: Screen corruption with Radeon 6670

2014-04-28 Thread Alexander Gitter
** Description changed:

Unfortunately I have no reliable way of reproducing this issue, but it
seems that after some time of using Ubuntu (especially when browsing
websites with firefox) the graphics are getting corrupted.

It starts with some small artifacts (single lines and pixels) and all of
the sudden the entire screen is full of artifacts and the OS is
  basically unusable at this state.

Coincidentally, I've had this problem with Arch Linux before. I was able to
fix it, by setting the power profile of the GPU to "mid" or "high" as described
here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI#Profile-based_frequency_switching
So to me it seems like this might be related to power management.

Doing some more testing with Ubuntu, I was able to fix the corruption
when switching the profile to mid and then logging out and in again.
- Leaving the profile at default/low did not fix the issue after re-login.

[Bug 1083030] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 resumes from Suspend without password prompt

2013-01-24 Thread Alexander Gitter
In my case "Lock" is ON and "Require my password when waking from system" is
checked.
When there is no indicator menu open while suspending, it works as expected and
I get the password prompt. However I can still reproduce the issue by following
the steps from #18.

[Bug 1083030] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 resumes from Suspend without password prompt

2012-12-30 Thread Alexander Gitter
I can reproduce this problem with a 12.04 installation, running on a Lenovo
ThinkPad R61.
Opening one of the menus in the top panel and then suspending the computer
seems to trigger this behaviour reliably.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Click on the settings button to open the drop down menu (though any
indicator menu will do)
2. Close the laptop lid to trigger suspension
3. Open the lid again

In some instances the password prompt shows up after a second or so, but
most of the time I get straight to the desktop without any prompt.

[Bug 676656] Re: in google search, bad russian fonts

2011-01-27 Thread Alexander Gitter
Forgot to mention that this might be caused by Firefox Sync, at least
that's what some other people suggest and what seems to be true for me.
I sync between a 10.10 and a 10.04 machine and for whatever reason
experience this issue on the 10.04 box.

intl.accept_languages is set to
"chrome://global/locale/intl.properties", which seems a bit odd...

[Bug 538744] [NEW] Partition dialog doesn't show partitions in top bar

2010-03-14 Thread Alexander Gitter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

In recent lucid builds, the partition dialog doesn't show any partitions in the
"SegmentedBar" at the top.
Another related issue is that the user gets no longer warned about overwriting
already installed OSes.

These problems are due to a change in the combobox-entries where you get
to choose the device to install Ubuntu on. The mentioned functionality
seems to depend on the text of those entries.

Find attached a patch that fixes the issues for me.

I have a problem with my Asus P5L-MX

The asus_atk0110 driver loads without errors and I have installed lm-sensors

I have copied over the /etc/fancontrol from Jaunty, but fancontrol
prints out errors as well:

[Bug 364292] Re: Warning icon with no warning message on partitioner screen

2009-10-18 Thread Alexander Gitter
I can still reproduce this with a current daily karmic.
So I looked further into the issue and here is a simple patch that fixed it for
me. I'm not familiar with the ubiquity code, so this is probably not the best
way to fix this.

Here is what happens:
Near the end of "set_autopartition_choices" there is a call to
"self.on_autopartition_toggled", which in turn calls
"self.on_extra_combo_changed". There the warning gets hidden.
Back in "set_autopartition_choices", there is then a call to
"self.autopartition_choices_vbox.show_all()", which obviously results in the
warning sign being shown again.

(Therefore the warning will actually be hidden if you select manual
partitioning and then switch back to the first option again)

I hope my description isn't too confusing ;) but the attached file
should pretty much explain it.

[Bug 453072] Re: Context menu for an USB pendrive shows "Unmount", "Eject" and "Safely Remove Drive"

2009-10-16 Thread Alexander Gitter
The particular flash drive I'm using is a Sandisk Cruzer Micro with "U3 Smart
Technology".
>From what I've gathered these drives contain a small partition where the U3
>installer is located. Now jaunty doesn't mount that partition, but Karmic
>does. It shows up as a mounted CD-Rom, seperate from the "actual USB drive"
>(that is, the data partition).
So the context menu entries are probably related to this, as the mounted CD
shows three unmount/eject/remove entries as well.

[Bug 427822] Re: fsck says last write time in future

2009-10-11 Thread Alexander Gitter
Okay my last comment wasn't quite correct. Of cource UTC is correctly
set to "yes" when os-prober indicates that Ubuntu is the only operating
system. So the thing with the wrong time might really be a VirtualBox
bug.

Now here is something interesting, I tried this out with Jaunty.
I realised that the underlying problem exists there, too. The filesystem has a
last mount time in the future, just as with Karmic. But Jaunty doesn't seem to
check whether the last mount time is in the future. (or automatically corrects
it, I don't know exactly)

Turns out that in /etc/default/rcS UTC was set to "yes", when instead it
should've been "no" as I use a local timezone.
So this is probably an installer bug after all.

[Bug 427822] Re: fsck says last write time in future

2009-10-11 Thread Alexander Gitter
I changed /etc/init/mountall.conf to print out the current time before it
execs mountall:
--- snip ---
console output

script
echo "/etc/init/mountall.conf: `date`"
. /etc/default/rcS
--- /snip ---

Now have a look at the attached picture. You can see that the output from
mountall.conf contains the wrong date.
At the very bottom I had tune2fs print out the last mount time and it's indeed
the wrong one. Thus leading to an fsck error on next reboot. If I don't do a
reboot but a shutdown instead, the error won't show up on next boot, because
the time would be wrong again.
Also notice that 'date' spits out the correct time after I was able to login.

An installation on my physical machine has the issue, too. But it
happens pretty randomly there and I haven't found a regularity (such as
'after each shutdown') as with VirtualBox.

I just noticed that usplash _does_ fall back to the console. However
there is quite some delay with seemingly no activity.

Also this is still valid for a VirtualBox installation, where I first
noticed the problem. Here, too, the Ubuntu logo disappears after a
certain amount of time, but there is no visible text.

[Bug 427822] Re: fsck says last write time in future

2009-10-10 Thread Alexander Gitter
To follow up on my last post, the problem doesn't seem to be related to updates
at all. Further tests have shown that the error can be produced everytime the
system is rebootet - provided that there was at least one shutdown since the
last reboot.
(There just hasn't been the need to reboot except after updates that required
it, so...)

Also did a fresh install with ext3 and I'm able to reproduce the issue
there, too.

[Bug 448214] [NEW] Usplash doesn't reveal the console when manual intervention is needed, thus leading a user to believe that the computer hangs

2009-10-10 Thread Alexander Gitter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usplash

I recently ran into a filesystem error on boot, where fsck couldn't
automatically fix the problem and the user is expected to manually run fsck.
However, now that usplash is active by default again, the system doesn't even
indicate to the user what happened. It just seems to be frozen at the white
Ubuntu logo.

I think that this would cause some trouble for new users.

[Bug 427822] Re: fsck says last write time in future

2009-10-10 Thread Alexander Gitter
> Was this the second time you booted the machine, or a different?

This machine has been booted a couple of times already and it usually
comes up without an error.

> The bit about installing updates intrigues me, you're saying that
updates result in this happening on the next reboot?

Exactly. It doesn't seem to be coupled to any particular package or something
like this.
Last time there was only one single update
(https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/karmic-changes/2009-October/010704.html).
After update-manager was finished, I rebooted the machine with the fusa and got
the error I posted above.

I did some more tests and interestingly the error appears on the first
_reboot_ after an update. It seems as if there can be any number of shut
down/start up cycles inbetween - those won't trigger the error. I tested
different variants of that a couple of times and it seems to be
reproducible.

By the way, it doesn't matter if I have the VirtualBox guest additions
installed or not. But I could also try this out on a physical box if
that helps.

I'm getting the same behavior as described by
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/e2fsprogs/+bug/427822/comments/23.

- running Karmic in VirtualBox 3.0.8
- /proc/version_signature: Ubuntu 2.6.31-13.43-generic
- my timezone is Europe/Berlin (currently GMT+2)

/dev/sda1: Superblock last mount time (Sat Oct 10 20:00:26 2009, now =
Sat Oct 10 18:05:13 2009) is in the future.

Where "now" (18:05:13) is the correct time.
The error can indeed be triggered by just installing available updates through
update-manager.

It's not actually a hardcoded path but a bug in one of the perl scripts.
The attached Fedora bug has a patch for this bug.

There is also a bugreport at Debian, but they "resolved" it by telling the the
reporter to create a symlink... which is not the right way to do this imho.

[Bug 273915] Re: Base: Error on saving a new record with no data entered

2009-04-28 Thread Alexander Gitter
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Saving a new record without modifying any of its fields throws a "Function
  sequence error".
Normally it shouldn't be possible to save a newly created record - the "Save
  Record" button is grayed out.
If you however change the contents of a field and then empty it again, the
  save-button stays active.

  Steps to reproduce:
  - Download
http://www.openoffice.org/nonav/issues/showattachment.cgi/56619/test2.odb
  - Open the form "Table1"
  - Create a new record (e.g. by using the Navigation Bar at the bottom)
  - Enter something in the textfield labeled "field" - but DO NOT save the
record yet!
  - Remove again the text you entered
  - Press the "Save Record" button

- Doing this I get a dialogbox saying ""Function sequence error" (I even
- did a screencast, see
- http://rapidshare.com/files/147524448/error.ogg.html)
+ Doing this I get a dialogbox saying ""Function sequence error"

[Bug 230636] [NEW] Base/Forms - wrong navigation bar behaviour with subforms

2008-05-15 Thread Alexander Gitter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I'm using Openoffice.org 1:2.4.0-3ubuntu6 on a hardy system.

First let me summarize the problem, then I'm going to explain the steps
you can reproduce on the attached sample database-document.

What I wanted to do:
- Prevent the main navigation bar to operate on the subform when a user focused
that subform
What I did:
- Setting the subform's "Navigation bar"- property to "Parent Form"

Expected behaviour:
- When a user is working on some data in the subform, this does not affect the
main record navigation bar at the bottom
Actual behaviour:
- The navigation bar indeed shows the right record number ("Record x of y")
coming from the parent form; however the "Previous/Next Record"-arrows seem to
still depend on the selected record in the subform - possibly hindering the
user to switch to the next/previous parent record

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open the attached file
2. Open the "pr"-form in edit mode
3. Right Click on the Subform and choose "Form..."
4. Notice that in the "Data"-tab the "Navigation bar"-property is set to
"Parent Form"
5. Open the form normally
6. Use the navigation bar at the bottom to scroll through the records... works
okay so far
7. Now click in the subform and select one of
- the very first subrecord
- the very last subrecord
- one in between
8. Notice how the arrows in the bottom navigation bar change to be greyed out
or not, depending on the selected subrecord
