[Bug 93413] Re: vpnc dead peer detection disconnects immediately

2007-05-09 Thread Alexander Papaspyrou
James,

I second that. On purpose, I left the description of the newly opened
network-manager-vpnc bug open as open can. I think this config stuff
should handled in a more general way by the UI part and its plugins, and
not by vpnc itself.

And yes, it might happen that certain config options are not available
in the gui, albeit included in the underlying command line tool. I'm
pretty sure that this happens not only here. However, I don't see a real
problem for vpnc here.

I would suggest to disable it DPD until a UI config option is available,
regardless when this will be the case. Rendering vpnc useless for many
people just for the sake of UI consistency doesn't sound sensible to me.

[Bug 34112] Re: gnome programs don't respect ~/.cups/lpoptions

2007-05-08 Thread Alexander Papaspyrou
I can confirm this, using Feisty with evince-0.8.1 with a HP LaserJet
4050. All other apps do duplex perfectly, just evince doesn't.

However, this seems to be a gnome-cups-admin issue. Although I setup my
printer settings with the GNOME printer setup tool, none of the settings
have been propagated to CUPS correctly. After setting things up via the
CUPS web frontend, evince recognizes everything in the correct way and
seems to work.

[Bug 112406] UI support for DPD

2007-05-04 Thread Alexander Papaspyrou
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager-vpnc

Currently, network-manager-vpnc lacks UI controls for setting up new DPD
support in vpnc-0.40. However, this seems to be a more general issue,
not only affecting this package, but also network-manager

In Bug #93413 James Tait correctly stated that the right thing to do
here would be to extend network-manager in a way that it can auto-
sense options from the underlying plugins (such as vpnc) and display
them.

This basically boils down to two possible solutions:

1. Extend the network-manager plugin architecture to allow custom
configuration dialogs for underlying vpn implementations and add
corresponding functionality to the plugins along with custom options
(e.g. DPD for vpnc).

pros/cons:
+ allows global and connection-specific settings as well as defining defaults
- implementation effort

2. Add generic options to the client connection setup dialog.

pros/cons:
+ easy to realize
- mixes up general (probably defaultable) options with connection-specific
stuff and clutters connection configuration UI

Comments?

[Bug 93413] Re: vpnc dead peer detection disconnects immediately

2007-05-04 Thread Alexander Papaspyrou
James,

I opened a new bug report (Bug #112406) on the second (UI) part.
However, fixing this will presumably take up some time.

This issue, though, should be fixed real soon now (tm), since it renders
network-manager-vpnc useless for many business (here, ma'am) users
useless.

I propose to raise the importance one level. Please add the upstream
dpatch to finally solve this irritating problem.

[Bug 89189] Re: Some windows do not render with Desktop Effects enabled on some hardware

2007-05-01 Thread Alexander Papaspyrou
I can confirm this issue on a ATI Fire GL notebook (IBM ThinkPad T42p,
model 2373-GTG) graphics card, using the ati driver.

Enabling the XAANoOffscreenPixmaps options leaves me with a completely
white screen, so this is (at least for me) no feasible workaround.

[Bug 89189] Re: Some windows do not render with Desktop Effects enabled on some hardware

2007-05-01 Thread Alexander Papaspyrou
The Java-related problem (blank windows) can be circumvented by doing an

# export AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit

before starting the Java app. However, I am unsure whether this is a
Java/AWT or X11/Compiz problem.
