[Bug 2077587] Re: Refresh WebExtensions portal patch
Successfully tested xdg-desktop-portal 1.14.4-1ubuntu2~22.04.2 from jammy-proposed using the test plan in the bug description, in a clean and up-to-date jammy amd64 VM. Following the test plan, I first tested that the native messaging portal works as expected before upgrading xdg-desktop-portal by installing the chrome-gnome-shell deb package and installing the GNOME Shell integration add-on in the Firefox snap, then visiting https://extensions.gnome.org/local/ and verifying that Firefox can talk to the native connector and display a list of the currently installed GNOME Shell extensions. I also tested with KeepassXC and its Firefox add-on that requires native messaging to function correctly. I then upgraded xdg-desktop-portal to 1.14.4-1ubuntu2~22.04.2 from jammy- proposed, and per the test plan verified that native messaging continues to work as intended in the Firefox snap, both with existing ~/.local/share/flatpak/db/webextensions and after deleting it and rebooting the VM for a pristine portal state. ** Tags removed: verification-needed-jammy ** Tags added: verification-done-jammy -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2077587 Title: Refresh WebExtensions portal patch To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xdg-desktop-portal/+bug/2077587/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 2077587] Re: Refresh WebExtensions portal patch
** Description changed: [ Impact ] * Without this change, firefox users on jammy who rely on the WebExtensions portal for firefox add-ons that need a native executable to function correctly will experience breakage when the latest version of the firefox native messaging patch is landed upstream in the near future. https://phabricator.services.mozilla.com/D140803 An instance of such breakage already happened earlier this year when we refreshed the firefox native messaging patch we carry in the firefox snap to the latest revision under review in Mozilla Phabricator and inadvertently broke native messaging for users of firefox snap on jammy. https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/firefox-122-snap-temporary-native-messaging-breakage-for-ubuntu-22-04-users-fixed-since/41940 * The newer changes to the WebExtensions portal are being backported because jammy and noble are the current primary targets for the effort of enabling native messaging in the firefox snap, and once the firefox implementation lands in the firefox snap, we want this to continue working seamlessly and as expected. Moreover, with both the firefox-side and portal-side patches being nearly ready for merge in the corresponding upstreams, it makes sense to ship an up-to-date version of the portal patch in jammy and noble to provide a uniform platform for the firefox-side patch across these two LTS releases, helping ease the maintenance burden and lessen the difference between them from this aspect should the need to debug and fix potential issues in firefox or in the portal arise later in the future. - * The impact of updating xdg-desktop-portal in jammy from 1.14.4 to - 1.14.6 should be minimal and positive, given that they are purely - bug fix micro releases: - https://github.com/flatpak/xdg-desktop-portal/releases/tag/1.14.5 - https://github.com/flatpak/xdg-desktop-portal/releases/tag/1.14.6 - * Updating the WebExtensions portal in xdg-desktop-portal before updating the firefox-side implementation in the firefox snap is fine and covered as part of the test plan. [Bug 2078059] Re: MS Teams screen sharing frequently stops working when accessing Teams from Firefox
Hello, and thank you for the update. That indeed seems unrelated. I'd suggest looking for reports of similar issues on upstream's tracker https://bugzilla.mozilla.org to see if anyone else may have run into this, and if yes then add as much detail as you can in form of a comment, and if not then consider making a report there as well so as to bring the issue to the attention of Firefox developers. Thank you for your reply and explanation (and no worries, your English is perfectly understandable!). I'm sorry to hear about the troubles, but I'm glad to hear that at least a fresh installation worked. It would have been interesting to see if the main snapd service and other related services were running okay in the environment before/during upgrade, using commands like: systemctl status snapd.service systemctl status snapd.apparmor.service And also have a look at their logs. But considering you likely no longer have access to the environment (due to reinstalling) we can't find that out. [Bug 2077587] Re: Refresh WebExtensions portal patch
Hi Chris, thank you for the review and feedback. Regarding your questions: I've updated the description to explicitly point out at which point in the test plan the xdg-desktop-portal should be upgraded to the -proposed version, and also clarify about the deletion of that file. Basically, we'd like to delete that file before we upgrade xdg-desktop-portal and verify that the current xdg-desktop-portal works as expected and creates that file again. Then, upgrade to the -proposed version and keep the file around and verify that the portal continues to work like it did before the upgrade. Then, delete the file again and verify that the portal works as expected when starting from scratch with the -proposed version. Regarding the manually-downloaded firefox snap, yes exactly: I wasn't sure about the exact timeline of the SRU being reviewed and landed, and we thought it may be helpful to have a separate build of the firefox snap with the current older firefox-side patch in case a newer revision gets merged upstream in the mean time. However, as of now this has not happened, so there is currently no need to manually download that separate revision, and using any of the official builds from the snap store would suffice. Lastly, regarding the state of the xdg-desktop-portal side of the implementation, it has been stable for quite a while, and the feedback we received from Mozilla is that it looks good to them. However, considering the PR against xdg-desktop-portal upstream is still open, there is a possibility for future revisions, though more likely due to feedback from xdg-desktop-portal folks in a final review before merging the PR rather than from Mozilla folks. I hope this helps clarify things more. :) ** Description changed: [ Impact ] - * Without this change, firefox users on jammy who rely on the -WebExtensions portal for firefox add-ons that need a native -executable to function correctly will experience breakage when the -latest version of the firefox native messaging patch is landed -upstream in the near future. -https://phabricator.services.mozilla.com/D140803 + * Without this change, firefox users on jammy who rely on the + WebExtensions portal for firefox add-ons that need a native + executable to function correctly will experience breakage when the + latest version of the firefox native messaging patch is landed + upstream in the near future. + https://phabricator.services.mozilla.com/D140803 -An instance of such breakage already happened earlier this year -when we refreshed the firefox native messaging patch we carry in -the firefox snap to the latest revision under review in Mozilla -Phabricator and inadvertently broke native messaging for users of -firefox snap on jammy. - https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/firefox-122-snap-temporary-native-messaging-breakage-for-ubuntu-22-04-users-fixed-since/41940 + An instance of such breakage already happened earlier this year + when we refreshed the firefox native messaging patch we carry in + the firefox snap to the latest revision under review in Mozilla + Phabricator and inadvertently broke native messaging for users of + firefox snap on jammy. + https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/firefox-122-snap-temporary-native-messaging-breakage-for-ubuntu-22-04-users-fixed-since/41940 - * The newer changes to the WebExtensions portal are being backported -because jammy and noble are the current primary targets for the -effort of enabling native messaging in the firefox snap, and once -the firefox implementation lands in the firefox snap, we want this -to continue working seamlessly and as expected. + * The newer changes to the WebExtensions portal are being backported + because jammy and noble are the current primary targets for the + effort of enabling native messaging in the firefox snap, and once + the firefox implementation lands in the firefox snap, we want this + to continue working seamlessly and as expected. -Moreover, with both the firefox-side and portal-side patches being -nearly ready for merge in the corresponding upstreams, it makes -sense to ship an up-to-date version of the portal patch in jammy -and noble to provide a uniform platform for the firefox-side patch -across these two LTS releases, helping ease the maintenance burden -and lessen the difference between them from this aspect should the -need to debug and fix potential issues in firefox or in the portal -arise later in the future. + Moreover, with both the firefox-side and portal-side patches being + nearly ready for merge in the corresponding upstreams, it makes + sense to ship an up-to-date version of the portal patch in jammy + and noble to provide a uniform platform for the firefox-side patch + across these two LTS releases, helping ease the maintenance burden + and lessen the difference between them from this aspect shou

[Bug 2077809] Re: package firefox 129.0.2+build1-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 failed to install/upgrade: new firefox package pre-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1
Hello, Per the dpkg terminal log, the script downloading and installing the Firefox snap encountered an unexpected EOF (end-of-file marker) while downloading the file from the snap store. Are you able to reproduce this issue? It may have been a temporary failure on the snap store side that may have since been fixed. If you're still able to reproduce this issue please add a comment with detailed steps on how to do so, otherwise there may not be much to do here and could close the issue. [Bug 2077587] [NEW] Refresh WebExtensions portal patch
here should be little to no risk for the other existing portals shipped by the package. * Given that this port of the newer changes from our upstream PR back to jammy includes several new commits, it is possible that one of them may inadvertently introduce a bug. However, we believe this risk is low, given that the PR changes were made with backward compatibility in mind to minimize the likelihood of breakage for existing users. Additionally, the 'risk' of certain breakage once the firefox-side patch is merged upstream far outweighs the risk of refreshing the portal-side patch to bring it up-to-date with the latest revision under review for merging into upstream. [ Other Info ] * SRUing the latest revision under review of our WebExtensions portal into jammy (and noble) will allow to us finally safely land the firefox-side implementation in upstream Firefox, helping avoid bitrot of the patch we carry against the firefox snap and easing the maintenance burden of the firefox snap and the native messaging portal support itself as part of the upstream codebase. ** Affects: xdg-desktop-portal (Ubuntu) Importance: High Assignee: Amin Bandali (bandali) Status: New ** Affects: xdg-desktop-portal (Ubuntu Jammy) Importance: High Assignee: Amin Bandali (bandali) Status: New ** Affects: xdg-desktop-portal (Ubuntu Noble) Importance: High Assignee: Amin Bandali (bandali) Status: New ** Affects: xdg-desktop-portal (Ubuntu Oracular) Importance: High Assignee: Amin Bandali (bandali) Status: New ** Also affects: xdg-desktop-portal (Ubuntu Noble) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: xdg-desktop-portal (Ubuntu Oracular) Importance: High Assignee: Amin Bandali (bandali) Status: New ** Also affects: xdg-desktop-portal (Ubuntu Jammy) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: xdg-desktop-portal (Ubuntu Noble) Importance: Undecided => High ** Changed in: xdg-desktop-portal (Ubuntu Jammy) Importance: Undecided => High ** Changed in: xdg-desktop-portal (Ubuntu Noble) Assignee: (unassigned) => Amin Bandali (bandali) ** Changed in: xdg-desktop-portal (Ubuntu Jammy) Assignee: (unassigned) => Amin Bandali (bandali) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2077587 Title: Refresh WebExtensions portal patch To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xdg-desktop-portal/+bug/2077587/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hello, I edited the title and shortened it to omit the duplicated sentences. As for the issue itself, I attempted an upgrade from 20.04 to 22.04 and it went through smoothly. I even left the Firefox window open and running, and I did not experience any issues. Could you elaborate on what you mean by 'frozen', and what indications there were that things were indeed frozen? One detail I'll point out is that during the upgrade from 20.04 to 22.04 Firefox gets transitioned from a traditional deb package to a snap package, and the downloading and installing of the Firefox snap may take several minutes depending on your internet connection speed and bandwidth. I believe the release upgrader does not currently show the progress of that happening, so could that be what you perceived as frozen? With myself and Mozilla QA having done some more testing for this and verifying it working as expected, I landed the change[1] for Firefox snap stable as well, and this should now be resolved starting with Firefox snap stable 129.0 and later. [Bug 2069486] Re: [snap] Firefox snap is reinstalled on a new release
Hello, Thank you for your reply, and apologies for my slow reply. I tried following Mozilla's instructions from the link you provided, in a fresh Ubuntu 24.04 virtual machine, and I was unable to reproduce the issue. I removed the Firefox snap, then ran the provided commands for setting things up to use the Mozilla repo. I then ran "sudo apt-get install firefox=128.0.3~build1" to install a slightly older version of the firefox package from Mozilla. Then, running "sudo apt-get upgrade" correctly upgraded the firefox package to version 129.0~build2, the current latest release, as expected. Are you completely sure you didn't miss any intermediary steps? Would you be able to try things in a fresh environment (e.g. a new virtual machine) and see if you can reproduce the issue? If not, unfortunately I'm not sure there's much I could do to help, except perhaps encourage you to open a bug report on Mozilla's tracker at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org with your observations. [Bug 2074295] Re: Firefox won't auto update on Ubuntu 24.04
Cheers, and thanks to you for your detailed reply and descriptions again. Indeed, based on your descriptions, I don't think any part of it is Firefox-specific, and it may be best to close this and open a new bug under the snapd package with appropriate descriptions (please feel free to include a link to this bug for reference). As one more thought about this, since you mentioned that some of the machines you deal with are used sporadically and e.g. not >6 hours a day, they may miss the time-based auto-update checks of snapd. As such, something that may help check or verify things would be to specify a 'refresh.timer' for snapd to modify when and how frequently snaps are refreshed. You can read more about this at https://snapcraft.io/docs/managing-updates#refreshtimer I hope this helps. And yes I'll close this bug accordingly, but if any of these issues turns out to be firefox-specific please feel free to add a comment saying so, and reopen the bug. ** Changed in: firefox (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2074295 Title: Firefox won't auto update on Ubuntu 24.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/2074295/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 2074295] Re: Firefox won't auto update on Ubuntu 24.04
Thank you for the explanations, and for looking to make a new report against snapd if the problem persists. I believe by default snapd won't auto-update any running snaps, for a period of 15 days. If 15 days have passed but at the time of the auto- update check the snap is still running, snapd will go ahead and update it anyway. So it would be interesting to check two things: - How long has passed since an update has become available but the snap wasn't updated? Is it more than 15 days? If yes, that may be a snapd bug. - If it's been less than 15 days and you have had the system up and running continuously for multiple hours (so that at least one snapd update check would have occurred), and you've seemingly closed the Firefox snap but it still wasn't updated, it might be that the Firefox snap left behind lingering processes even after being quit, which could trip up snapd and cause it to not auto-update the Firefox snap. You could check for firefox processes using either GNOME's System Monitor or similar, or from a terminal by running something like "ps aux | grep firefox". Hope this helps. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2074295 Title: Firefox won't auto update on Ubuntu 24.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/2074295/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hello, and thanks for the report. I am indeed not aware of any issues with the snaps auto-update process. Per https://snapcraft.io/docs/managing-updates snaps update automatically by default, with snapd checking for updates 4 times a day. If you do notice/experience an issue with the updates, it might be best to open an issue against the 'snapd' package rather than 'firefox'. [Bug 2045820] Re: firefox snap .desktop missing StartupWMClass
Hello, and sorry for the slow reply here. The sources for building the Firefox snap are at https://github.com/canonical/firefox-snap however for the desktop file we directly use whatever Mozilla provides, which is 'taskcluster/docker/firefox-snap/firefox.desktop' in the Firefox source tree. However, there is ongoing work upstream per https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1901703 to unify that and the other firefox.desktop files across their tree and have them instead be generated by a call to their 'mach' tool like 'mach repackage desktop-file' during build time. I believe this new approach also adds a 'StartupWMClass' field to the generated desktop file, so I'll mark this bug as 'In Progress'. ** Bug watch added: Mozilla Bugzilla #1901703 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1901703 ** Changed in: firefox (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => In Progress -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2045820 Title: firefox snap .desktop missing StartupWMClass To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/2045820/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1999975] Re: Snap crashes while firefox upgrade.
Hello, and sorry for the slow reply here. Were you trying to upgrade your installed packages, or upgrade your Ubuntu installation as a whole to a newer release of Ubuntu? Also, in addition to removing the Firefox snap package, had you removed its corresponding deb helper package too? (using e.g. 'sudo apt remove fireofx') I believe a reason this happened may have been that the 'ubuntu-desktop' and 'ubuntu-desktop-minimal' packages declare 'firefox' in their 'Recommends' section, which I think by default results in apt trying to install/upgrade them when upgrading packages. As such, if you were trying to upgrade your installed packages, you could try something like 'sudo apt upgrade --no-install-recommends' to tell apt not to pull in 'Recommends' packages. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/175 Title: Snap crashes while firefox upgrade. [Bug 2026309] Re: Unprovoked shutdowns of Firefox
I did apologize for the late reply... Without further details such as detailed logs I'm afraid there's not much we could do to try and track that issue down. If you can and would like to, reporting these bugs on upstream's tracker at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org with accompanying logs would be helpful in documenting them and gathering details about them, which might then help Mozilla developers debug and resolve them. Hello, and sorry for the slow reply here. You may have removed the Firefox snap, but it seems you had not removed the firefox deb helper package (it provides some useful system integration for the Firefox snap), and the pre-inst script of that package was the cause of error here. If you still have access to that system, please also try removing the firefox deb package if you indeed don't use firefox. Otherwise, the issue I see in the dpkg terminal logs is a temporary failure in name resolution (DNS lookup error), and was most likely a random/temporary issue that has since long been fixed, and there isn't much we could do for that from Firefox's perspective anyway. Hello, and sorry for the slow reply here. Per the dpkg terminal log, there was a 'temporary failure in name resolution issue' (i.e. DNS look up issue) when the system tried to install the Firefox snap from the snap store. [Bug 2012430] Re: attribute breaks dashes
Hello, and sorry for the slow reply here. I just tried, and I could reproduce the bug with Firefox 128 deb package on Ubuntu 20.04 and Firefox 128 snap package on Ubuntu 22.04, but Firefox 128 snap on Ubuntu 24.04 seems to render it correctly. Would you be able to verify this? Since the issue happens on older Ubuntu releases but not the latest one, I'm inclined to think that it may be an issue with one of the lower level system libraries that Firefox interacts with. Still, it may be worth opening a bug report about this on Mozilla's tracker at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org as well. Would you please do that if not yet already, and provide the bug number here so I could add it to this bug's metadata?
