The file /etc/alternatives/my.cnf exists. It is referenced via symlink /etc/mysql/my.cnf. It may or may not be a bug. It was automatically picked by the ubuntu bug report application. I tried for some time this morning. Then I uninstalled and reinstalled mysql which worked fine for me :) I will consider these options next time.Thanks.
