[Bug 605577] Re: Help contents title bar shows cubes with numbers instead of a proper title
@David Planella Last time a fix was released it didn't fix the problem after all (see #21). We should avoid this happening again to the final release. So can we test the fix before it is released ? [Bug 605577] Re: Help contents title bar shows cubes with numbers instead of a proper title
I vote for making an exception to the final freeze and fix it before release. It might just be a cosmetic issue, but the about ubuntu application is also affected and will most likely be run by people that don't know much about Ubuntu and want to find out more. This bug really wouldn't make for a great first impression about Ubuntu as an operating system. -- Help contents title bar shows cubes with numbers instead of a proper title https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/605577 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 630856] Re: During the boot process pm-utils disables Automatic Acoustic Management making the hard-drive very noisy
Here is a harddrive script that doesn't change the AAM setting. It will just have the default power-on value as decided by the manufacturer. ** Attachment added: harddrive https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pm-utils/+bug/630856/+attachment/1561183/+files/harddrive -- During the boot process pm-utils disables Automatic Acoustic Management making the hard-drive very noisy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/630856 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 630856] [NEW] During the boot process pm-utils disables Automatic Acoustic Management making the hard-drive very noisy
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pm-utils The problem appeared upon upgrading from Lucid to Maverick-beta. At every boot, half-way through the boot process the sound of the hard-drive changes dramatically and becomes much louder. The difference is very noticeable, upon hearing it the first time I opened the computer case to check what was going on, like if the hard drive got out of its place or something ! The whole issue obviously depends on the particular model of hard-drive, and on what is its AAM setting upon power-on. Mine is quite a common model model: WD Caviar Black 1.0TB (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=488) AAM can be enabled/disabled using hdparm -M option and the script that disables it during the boot process is: /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/harddrive Ways to fix the problem: Temporary fix until next boot, but useful to test the issue: (the /dev/xx entry must obviously match your device) sudo hdparm -M 128 /dev/sda (enables AAM) sudo hdparm -M 254 /dev/sda (disables AAM) In-between values might also be recognized by your device. Permanent fix: edit the file /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/harddrive and change the line DRIVE_ACOUSTIC_MGMT_AC=${DRIVE_ACOUSTIC_MGMT_AC:-254} to DRIVE_ACOUSTIC_MGMT_AC=${DRIVE_ACOUSTIC_MGMT_AC:-128} Proposed solution: The AAM setting should not be changed by the pm-utils package at all. The default setting should be whatever the hard-drive manufacturer though was the most normal setting upon power-on. For the WD drive mentioned the power-on setting seems quite good, as the noise level when disabling AAM would probably be unacceptable for the average user. Optionally, the user could be given a chance to modify the AAM setting from a system configuration tool: Administration-Disk Utility could be a good candidate. The option shouldn't be offered by a power-saving configuration tool like Administration-Power Management, because the truth is that AAM doesn't seem to be related to power consumption at all ! AAM seems to only affect the noise/performance ratio, and not power consumption. This is also confirmed by a TomsHardware review: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/terabyte-hitachi-acoustic,review-31458-9.html As the review points out, power consumption seems to be slightly higher when AAM is enabled ! The way the feature is dealt with at present is quite wrong considering the mentioned script changes the setting according to whether the computer is running on AC or on battery. ** Affects: pm-utils (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: aam hard-drive noise -- During the boot process pm-utils disables Automatic Acoustic Management making the hard-drive very noisy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/630856 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Found a fix. Installing linux-image-2.6.33-020633rc5-generic fixed the problem for me. I'm running latest Lucid, but chances are this will work on Karmic too. If you have Karmic try it anyway and see if it works. Open http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ and makes a nice bookmark to it. This is where you can get latest kernel versions in nice .deb packages easy to install. Select v2.6.33-rc5/ (latest at the moment, you might try a newer one if available). Download linux-image-2.6.33-020633rc5-generic_2.6.33-020633rc5_amd64.deb Type: sudo dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.33-020633rc5-generic_2.6.33-020633rc5_amd64.deb Reboot (with no ACPI= option whatsoever). All 4 logical cores are working fine, and also speedstep scales the cores in 9 steps from 1.2 to 3.33 GHZ. Graphics(2D and 3D), sound and network card all seem to work just fine. Didn't try suspend features yet, I never really used them anyway. my BIOS is 0028 and my board revision is 204 (check the label on the board with E70932-204). -- Cannot boot 9.10 with ACPI support on Intel DH55TC mb https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/507770 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Fix Committed means that a patch that fixes the problem has been created and possibly some packages have been built, but these packages have not been approved and have not made their way to the official karmic-update repository yet. The second case seems to me to be our case. If we mark this bug as Fix Released, distribution maintainers will think it's a problem completely solved, forget about it, and not take any further action: an updated package will not be released. Please don't change the status to Fix Released unless you really know what you are doing, especially if you joined launchpad just a few days ago =). You can keep a bookmark to https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/linux/ to check when a new kernel package has been released. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Fix Released = Fix Committed -- Huawei E169 USB dongle not working with kernel 2.6.31-12.40 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/446146 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

2.6.31-14.46 is still affected by the bug, and today it's kernel freeze time... Does milestone - karmic-updates mean that a fix for this bug will be released as a kernel update after the release of 9.10 ? The connection is established only sometimes. This may be because of double entries for the connection (see bug #339926), even though the connection that works is not always the same (sometimes the 1st, sometimes the 2nd). [Bug 131538] Re: [needs-packaging] firefox-htmlvalidator
The xpi file from the official site (0.846 at present) is linked with obsolete libraries. On Hardy beta it requires me to have installed for this purpose alone the 2 packages libstdc++5 gcc-3.3-base A packaged version could be compiled with libstdc++6 and remove these dependencies. -- [needs-packaging] firefox-htmlvalidator https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/131538 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 201330] Re: Need to whitelist multiple ATI cards, or remove blacklisting
I made another version of my patch. It is designed to be as less disruptive as possible considering how long we have before the Hardy release. The only thing this patch changes is this: The clause not to run compiz if using a laptop with ati or radeon driver is ignored if the card has one of the following pciids: 1002:3154 1002:4336 1002:4337 1002:4c57 1002:4c66 1002:4e50 1002:4e56 1002:5460 1002:5835 I am working on a nice cleanup of compiz-manager that will change the framework and introduce blacklists and whitelists targeted at each different driver. This could probably resolve the whole problem of cards that work better/worse with open-source/proprietary (fglrx/ati) drivers, but I think it's too late now for Hardy. For now let's try and hope that this or someone else patch will make its way into hardy so that we will be able to enjoy compiz straight from after the installation as we alway did before. ** Attachment added: compiz_0.7.2-0ubuntu3-rc1.debdiff http://launchpadlibrarian.net/13123373/compiz_0.7.2-0ubuntu3-rc1.debdiff -- Need to whitelist multiple ATI cards, or remove blacklisting https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/201330 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

to pamukk: Wait for an update in .deb format to be released and install it as you normally do with 'update manager'. Or take a look at my debdiff and manually edit /usr/bin/compiz. You can also try starting compiz as 'SKIP_CHECKS=yes compiz'. There was a configuration file somewhere that could be used to do this. [Bug 201330] Re: Need to whitelist multiple ATI cards, or remove blacklisting
Here is a patch for version 1:0.7.2-0ubuntu2 that enables cards with a whitelisted pciid. I included in the list all the pciids I have seen in these comments. The attachment is the debian/patches directory. My patch is named 100-check_pciids_whitelist.patch. I picked 100 just because last patch in the list was 99. Is this ok ? I never used quilt before so I hope the patch is done properly. Is sending the debian/patches directory the right way to share patches ? ** Attachment added: check_pciids_whitelist.tar.gz http://launchpadlibrarian.net/12971686/check_pciids_whitelist.tar.gz -- Need to whitelist multiple ATI cards, or remove blacklisting https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/201330 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
