[Bug 1673627] Re: dmcrypt-get-device does not check the return values of setuid() or setgid()

2017-03-28 Thread Andreas Henriksson
Hi Tyler Hicks.

There's been discussions about moving over to util-linux eject on the
Debian side in https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=737658

Is there anything that still uses dmcrypt-get-device as shipped as a
not-from-upstream addition in the current eject package?
codesearch.debian.net can't find anything. Can't we just drop the
dmcrypt-get-device.c addition now? Do you know?

Andreas Henriksson

[Bug 1510972] Re: bsdtar default file name is /dev/st0

See http://sources.debian.net/src/libarchive/3.1.2-11/tar/bsdtar.c/#L74

behaviour. (See apple ifdef for reference.)

Feel free to convince upstream about changing the behaviour if you still
think it should be done after investigating the above.

Re: [Bug 1310765] Re: libarchive.so is not symlinked

2014-04-22 Thread Andreas Henriksson
On Tue, Apr 22, 2014 at 02:25:13PM -, Dustin Oprea wrote:
What makes you think that I need development files?

The topic of the bug report made me think that.
You said: libarchive.so is not symlinked

This development file is shipped in the development package!

Also you said:
In Ubuntu 12.04 and 14.04, there is a libarchive.so.12 and libarchive.so.13,
respectively. However, there is no libarchive.so . This makes it hard to build
against.

Which I understand as you trying to do development, without having development
files for libarchive installed.

 I just need the library.

And you already stated that you have it installed. So what's the
problem?

If I have to install the development package to get the library,
then what's the point of the libarchivex package?

Installing the development files are optional and only needed when you
want to build things against a particular library.
The -dev package (including header files, .so symlink, etc) is needed
at *build* time.

The libarchive13 package contains the files needed at *runtime* for
programs dynamically linked to Shared Object ABI version 13 of libarchive.

Andreas Henriksson

[Bug 883107] Re: Rygel fails to listen on eth0

2012-07-06 Thread Andreas Henriksson
Recent versions of gupnp switched from using NM context manager to
using a new Linux context manager. This will listen to network interface
events directly from the kernel, so should include interfaces that NM
considers unmanaged.

Beware, that in the future NM context manager might be used again
depending on which features it provides - so the old advice is still
valid. If you do not use NM - make sure it's stopped! This will make
gupnp fall back on a traditional unix handling.

[Bug 827028] Re: Uses 100% CPU after starting

2012-07-06 Thread Andreas Henriksson
1. More things to index means it takes more time to complete the
indexing. Modern power saving practices is that if you wake the CPU
up, then it should be utilized as much as possible so it can go back to
sleep as soon as possible. If you think artificial sleep calls should be
inserted in the indexing then you'll just create a less power efficient
and slower to finish indexing

2. I agree... but what you're basically saying here is that you're
stating that you don't think the linux scheduler is good enough.

You probably want to reassign this to POSIX instead, which is what
defines EEXISTS. or you could reassign it to the kernel and argue
that it shouldn't be using POSIX error codes, but either way you'll hit

tells it like the kernel told it. Really, the best option seems to

[Bug 913965] Re: Rygel does not transcode any video

2012-01-12 Thread Andreas Henriksson
We've failed to find someone who cares for doing the administrative work
of getting stuff synced to Ubuntu properly. We currently rely on the
automatic debian sync (so you'll have to wait for the next ubuntu
release to get a newer rygel, which will then be one release behind the
current stable release AGAIN becuase the debian sync was stopped early
in the ubuntu dev cycle). If you're willing to help out here, that
would be great! It's not much work you'll need to do because I'll
provide you with packages via Debian, you'll just have to deal with
Ubuntu administrative work to get stuff synced during freeze phases.

[Bug 913965] Re: Rygel does not transcode any video

2012-01-09 Thread Andreas Henriksson
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you might want to find a way to get a
more recent version (0.12.x) of rygel and see if the problem still exists.
Newer versions are available from Debian if you can't find a more suitable
source.

Hope this helps, have a nice day.

[Bug 909190] Re: ifconfig alias creates bogus route

2011-12-28 Thread Andreas Henriksson
Why are you filing a bug against iproute when you're clearly not using
it?

Could you please explain to me how you expected ifconfig to work? (because what
you demonstrated here is exactly what I expected and how it's been behaving
since before CIDR was invented)...
If you expect networking tools that behaves more sanely and up to date with
todays networking standard I'd suggest you to stop using net-tools which has
been deprecated for about ten years and use iproute instead!

[Bug 894546] Re: Add --version switch

2011-11-25 Thread Andreas Henriksson
Fred not every open source project is a GNU project. The GNU
Coding Standards are pretty insane in some places if you ask me (and
it's well known that I'm definitely not alone in thinking so). Please
don't expect every (non-GNU) program in existance to adopt it.

Also, you already have a command line for checking version of every
program. It also gives you the exact package version (so you'll be able
to figure out what patches has been applied on top of the upstream
version). Only knowing the upstream version is not good enough in many
cases. See the dpkg manpage for additional information.

[Bug 832910] Re: rygel version 0.10.1-1 failed to build in oneiric

2011-08-24 Thread Andreas Henriksson
Rygel checks for max version of build dependencies like libsoup which
has been tested for API compatibility so that people building old
releases on top of newer API-incompatible libraries don't run into
problems.

The max version of libsoup has been bumped in the current development
release of Rygel which is expected to be released as a new major stable
update soon (0.12)

Fixing this build failure should be as easy as bumping the max version
in configure.ac and running autoreconf .

[Bug 830050] Re: rygel does not work correctly

2011-08-21 Thread Andreas Henriksson
Ok, so this basically means please sync from Debian . if anyone is
interested in going through the administrative work to get that done
(because I believe Ubuntu is currently in freeze?) then please do so,
otherwise this version will show up in Ubuntu whenever the next release
opens up for development.

In the meantime, users should be able to use the current packages from
Debian (hopefully even without rebuilding them) if you're running the
latest and greatest Ubuntu.

[Bug 815133] Re: ss filter state name 'listen' is implemented as 'listening'

2011-07-26 Thread Andreas Henriksson
It would be really nice if you could work out a patch for the issues
you've identified to update the manpage (which needs alot of love but
receives very little)

There are lots of other suggestions on topics to update the
documentation for in the iproute2 package at
http://bugs.debian.org/src:iproute if you feel inspired to work on some
more while at it

Feel free to send your patches to me, the debian bug tracking system
(where I'll pick them up and forward upstream) or even better the
upstream mailing list. I don't think there are anyone looking after
iproute in launchpad

[Bug 630528] Re: Sync rygel 0.7.7-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2010-09-05 Thread Andreas Henriksson
Please sync rygel 0.7.7-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)
that should be experimental.

I'd like to point out that 0.7 is a development series and that it would be
wise to approve future 0.8.0 which will be released with Gnome 2.32. Other then
that, I support this because there has been very many improvements since 0.6.0
which is currently in Maverick (and still the latest upstream stable release).
I'll make sure to get 0.8.0 into debian experimetal so you can easily sync it
as soon as it's released.

PS. This also needs syncing of gupnp, gupnp-av and gupnp-dlna from
debian experimental as well (these are stable upstream bugfix releases
just uploaded to experimental because of the debian freeze). Possibly
you also want to sync gupnp-vala. Even though it's not strictly
necessary it's probably a smart idea to keep the vala bindings synced
with the gupnp libraries it binds to avoid issues. (You already have
vala 0.9.7 required by gupnp-vala, so that's one less issue to consider
here.)

[Bug 299956] Re: Iso's don't mount correctly through 'archive mounter'

2010-07-26 Thread Andreas Henriksson
Hello John Baptist!

Thanks for injecting some positive energy into this bug report. The previous
comments has been really demotivating for me.
I'd like to help clear up some confusion, which will hopefully help you out in
your quest to find the problem ...

* gvfs (and thus nautilus) uses libarchive, mount uses kernel built-in
iso filesystem support, file-roller uses genisoimage (e.g. isoinfo).
Completely separate implementations. Any problems they share or not are
purely by chance. If you want a command-line frontend to libarchive for
testing like you're doing with isoinfo for genisoimage, install bsdtar
and look at the libarchive specific flags in the bsdtar manpage.

* You're right the ;1 is a version appended to the filename in the
image. Rock Ridge is not that common nowadays though. The Rock Ridge
version numbering scheme, if you can call it that, is also used in
Joliet Extension (which most isos have nowadays for long filenames which
also works on MS Windows).

* Unfortunately sometimes standard documents are a bit vague which
results in different iso creating programs doing things differently,
which means iso readers have to implement all cases. Upstream libarchive
has a test-suite which also tests iso files and all (current) tests
ofcourse passes. This means people who have problems need to report
which program they used to generate the iso and provide a testcase so
the testsuite can be expanded and libarchive support more ways of
writing isos. Comments like This STILL doesn't work? are completely
useless, because it works FOR ALL KNOWN testcases. Unless you (the bug
reporter) know which program generated the iso you're having problems
with and are able to provide a testcase, noone will be able to help out.

* Please make sure you're testing with the latest libarchive version
installed, currently 2.8.4-1 (available in maverick atleast).

You seems to have installed both the MediaExport (included in rygel

Where the tracker service running? (IIRC ubuntu used to play tricks with

Feel free to also include which version of tracker you have installed.

It would also be helpfull if you could start a terminal and from there

[Bug 396949] Re: mounted cdrom doesn't display long filenames

2010-03-09 Thread Andreas Henriksson
The new upstream release including Joliet support (by your truly) is now
packaged and maintained in Debian by me.
The new release is API/ABI compatible.
The only potential problem I can see is that a new build-dependency on
liblzma-dev is added and I'm not certain about what status the xz-utils
transition has in ubuntu. (If you'd rather sacrifice the lzma support in
libarchive to avoid xz-utils problems, the build-dependency can temporarily
simply be dropped!)

You might want to consider a feature freeze exception for this since
there seems to be atleast a few users who would appreciate the new
features which are long overdue.

[Bug 487745] Re: Adding IP address with scope link creates global address

2009-11-25 Thread Andreas Henriksson
I think this is a kernel bug. The scope seems to be passed into the
kernel via netlink as specified on the command line.

Looking at the kernel:
inet6_rtm_newaddr [1] calls inet6_addr_add [2] without passing the ifa_scope
struct member and then the scope is generated from the address within the
inet6_addr_add function.

[1]: http://lxr.linux.no/#linux+v2.6.31/net/ipv6/addrconf.c#L3263
[2]: http://lxr.linux.no/#linux+v2.6.31/net/ipv6/addrconf.c#L2081

(compare the ipv4 equivalent inet_addr_add and see that it picks up the
ifa_scope from the rtnetlink message. Setting scope with iproute on ipv4
addresses works for me.)

Please forward to bugzilla.kernel.org (and by the way, iproute doesn't
have any bug tracker as far as I know).

[Bug 395710] Re: Opening Places/Computer nautilus crash with Segmentation fault

2009-07-18 Thread Andreas Henriksson
Experienced nautilus crashing because of the ubuntuone extension on
32bit ubuntu karmic while viewing a ftp site. Problem dissapeared when
installing the PPA version.

Why is the fixed version not getting pushed into karmic? It's IMHO
pretty serious and many people are experiencing it Please...

The linux kernel has never supported the equalize functionality. The
support for equalize has been dropped in the upstream iproute
development tree to avoid similar confusions in the future.

2009-06-19 Thread Andreas Henriksson
I seem to have the same problem. Running with KMS enabled + edgers xorg.
With kernel 2.6.30-8 I get the ubuntu logo at startup, then black screen, then
the screen reappears at GDM login prompt.
With kernel 2.6.30-9 I get the ubuntu logo at startup, then black screen, then
the computer seems to continue working for a while but the screen remains black.

[Bug 380126] Re: [Karmic] Touchpad not recognised correctly, synaptics driver not in use

2009-06-07 Thread Andreas Henriksson
... however, as I stated previously.. using those options found in the
news file didn't allow touch clicking, and my scroll is broken too
(there's a designated area on the right of the touchpad for it). It
seems to me, that while it is detecting it, it's not applying the proper
driver for it. Strange thing is, I've never had this issue in any
previous distro of Kubuntu.

Could you please be less vague?
Are you aware the default configuration has changed to Mac touchpad behaviour?
Are you aware Mac touch scrolling doesn't have a dedicated area but instead use
the 2 fingers method?
Are you aware there's no way for the driver to detect if your vendor painted a
scrollbar on your touchpad?
If you are having problems using the tools (synclient or
gpointing-device-settings) to restore the old default configuration, could you
please include a detailed description of what is failing? (ie. what did you do?
what happened? what did you expect to happen?)

Maybe this discussion should all be taken to a forum somewhere instead
of being discussed here?!

I'm going to unsubscribe for now. Feel free to contact me directly via
email if anyone needs assistance, but if you do make sure to back up
your statements with proof, do *not* jump to conclusions and clearly
mark your *guesses* as such.

[Bug 380126] Re: [Karmic] Touchpad not recognised correctly, synaptics driver not in use

2009-06-07 Thread Andreas Henriksson
SRElysian: I'm sorry if I offended you. It was not my intention. I only
wanted to give helpful suggestions. Also, none of my laptops have the
(visual indication of) touchpad scrollbars. Doesn't really matter either
way. No one configuration is going to suit everybody. Your fdi file is
the perfect solution for you, thanks for sharing it so other people can
use it who are in your situation. What changed is Xorg. Ubuntu didn't
ship any configuration (fdi) so whatever was used was the defaults in
the Xorg binary. (That's a way simplified description. Alot more
changed. Xorgs own builtin hardware abstraction was totally replaced
with using HAL.)

Tom Wright: Apple disagrees with you on tap-to-click being an essential
feature. Apparently so does the Xorg people nowadays. Hence, my
suggestion to discuss the defaults on some forum with wider audience to
reach consensus on what the best default configuration is.

An updated package is available in the pkg-iproute debian git

It has not yet been uploaded to Debian since there was a freeze (Lenny
release) until recently. Since then I've asked Alexander Wirt, the
(co)maintainer of iproute in Debian to review the package but hasn't
heard back yet. I might go ahead and upload the updated version to
debian soon without his review.

I heard that the community (MOTUs) can't do anything about the package
since it's in main and thus apparently only reachable by Canonical

[Bug 285397] Re: rhythmbox crashed with SIGSEGV in IA__g_hash_table_lookup()

2008-10-21 Thread Andreas Henriksson
Just reproduced it by loading archive from ~/.gvfs/sftp on fatal.se/
(root folder of the remote computer).

I don't think the backtrace is all that useful, there's already a NULL pointer
passed into the hash function as key in the previous report visible which is
probably why things blow up there.
Additionally there are several assertion failures before the crash, so I'm
guessing there's memory corruption and the particular backtrace is just a
symptom of that

I'll try to fish out the new backtrace with debugging symbols and attach
it as soon as I figure out how the ubuntu bug reporting tools work

[Bug 228370] Re: vino-server doesn't accept IPv4 connections when local only is checked

2008-09-10 Thread Andreas Henriksson
Patch now available at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=403192
Not likely to be fixed in 2.24 which is due too soon according to upstream
maintainer (also needs testing on BSD).

[Bug 260301] Re: routef is missing a man page. routef --help executes the script. It is DANGEROUS!

2008-09-09 Thread Andreas Henriksson
First, let me just state that running random commands that you don't
know what they do as root is a BAD idea!

Secondly, the same complaint was filed as debian bug #325290 and was
fixed by adding a manual page in the debian package version 20071016-3
(later included also upstream), so nowadays ubuntu probably contains it
too (so this bug can probably be closed?).
