[Bug 554263] Re: [uvcvideo causes ehci_hcd to force halt]Trying to use built-in webcam in certain notebooks/laptops breaks other USB devices
They (Canonical) can't take care of the problem if it's a hardware issue. Buggy hardware is not unheard of, but it's unfortunately the worst case scenario because in order to fix the problem the hardware either has to be recalled and replaced with non-sucky hardware OR a software fix has to be made for a particular kind of broken hardware. The problem with the latter solution is that it will often create more problems than it solves. Beware of cheap computers. Ours was a low-end model for just 350 euros (and naturally, too good to be true). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/554263 Title: [uvcvideo causes ehci_hcd to force halt]Trying to use built-in webcam in certain notebooks/laptops breaks other USB devices To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/554263/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 663892] [NEW] Terratec Cinergy C HD not operating correctly
Public bug reported: This DVB-C tv tuner card is supported by the Mantis driver now included in the kernel. However to make this card work I have to manually modprobe the relevant modules (tda10021 and mantis). After this the card works until I suspend the computer. Then I have to remove and reload the modules for it to work again. Seeing as this is a practically supported card, would be nice to have the kinks worked out. You know what... it's not a duplicate, but I am in fact suffering from two bugs. Removing gnome-screensaver allows me to get back to the working X-session (formerly known as the blank X-session with only an arrow visible). However the new log-in is still corrupted if using Compiz. -- [RV250] Compiz/desktop effects break new log-ins/fast user switching https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/565835 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 539163] Re: [Legacy Radeon cards] Desktop effects/compiz: display brightness fluctuation with zoom, workspace switch or Expo
Looks like I finally found the explanation... My upstream bug was pretty quickly marked a duplicate of another bug and within that bug's comments I found this tip: Go to Compiz settings (compizconfig-settings-manager), in there to general settings and deselect Lighting. That fixed the issue for me. Apparently it's a bug in the display driver. [Bug 565835] Re: [RV250] User switching breaks X-session(s)
Tried with the radeon.agpmode parameter. I discovered that the default setting on my system is 4. None of the tried settings (-1, 1, 2, 4) did anything to the but I noted that the graphics corruption was different with the -1 setting. I noted a couple of things in my dmesg that I am not sure are important: First, it says that it detects 64M of VRAM and later says that 32M of VRAM is actually ready. Secondly, the aperture size stays at 128M for all agpmode settings except -1, when it changes to 512M. ** Attachment added: "dmesg_grep_radeon.txt" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/45074023/dmesg_grep_radeon.txt -- [RV250] User switching breaks X-session(s) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/565835 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 565835] [NEW] User switching breaks X-session(s)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Steps to repeat: 1. Create two user accounts 2. Log in as one or the other 3. Attempt to switch users by selecting the other user's name or by selecting 'Switch user...' from the power menu. What happens: I get a screen with corrupted graphics that does not respond to input other than showing mouse movement (cursor is a huge block instead of a pointer). See attached screenshot for more details. If I use Ctrl+Alt+Fx key kombo I can succesfully switch to any of the text mode terminals, but will have 2-3 corrupt graphical terminals in range F7-F9. One terminal will host an unresponsive gnome screensaver dialog, one a blank screen with an arrow, and one the corrupt graphics or just a blinking text cursor. The blank screen with the arrow is the working x-session, because it will take commands. For example I was able to reboot by doing a Alt+F2, then typing gnome-terminal, then typing sudo reboot and then typing my password and hitting enter. What should happen: I should either get a login screen or the screensaver password dialog for the other user! [Bug 554263] Re: [Toshiba Satellite L300D]Trying to use built-in webcam breaks wireless and power management
Scratch that last one, read the new improved bug report and follow the instructions for including all the necessary info. :) ** Description changed: - Lucid Lynx (10.04) Beta 1, kernel 2.6.32-19-generic + Lucid Lynx (10.04) Beta + Karmic Koala (9.10) - The webcam on this machine does more than just not work. It also takes - down other functionality with it! + A conflict between the web cam and (built-in) wireless USB adapter seems to be taking place. + Steps to repeat on affected machines: - 1. Run cheese - 2. Wireless adapter will immediately disconnect after which NetworkManager will just display 'device not ready' - 3. Suspend/hibernate no longer function either + Run cheese (or any other app that tries to use the web cam such as + Ekiga, aMSN, etc.) - Rebooting fixes everything except the webcam which continues to wreak havoc if called upon. - This is a regression since Ubuntu 9.04 where this webcam worked perfectly. + What happens: + 1. Wireless adapter will immediately disconnect after which NetworkManager will just display 'device not ready' + 2. Suspend and/or hibernate will also fail if attempted. + 3. Removing and reinserting the web cam and/or wireless module will not restore system functionality, has to be rebooted. - This bug in also occurs on Karmic (9.10 stable) with the latest updates - exactly as described above. + This is a regression since Ubuntu 9.04 where this web cam worked + perfectly. + + -- INFO FOR BUG POSTERS -- + This bug seems to affect varied models of the Toshiba Satellite line so to make it easier for devs to troubleshoot I suggest you do the following: + + 1. Make the bug happen. + 2. To attach the relevant data to this bug report, open a terminal in (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) and type the following command: apport-cli -f -p linux + 3. Follow the instructions on screen and at the end when it asks what to do with the report, tell apport to save the file. + After this, you will have a file in /tmp that might look like this: apport.linux-image-2.6.32-19-generic.wRN7Qd.apport + 4. Copy the report file to your home folder and reboot. + 5. Once online you can leave a message here with the full name/model of your notebook and the generated report file as an attachment to that message! + + If these instructions are followed there will be no need to post bits + and pieces of information separately. ** Summary changed: - [Toshiba Satellite L300D]Trying to use built-in webcam breaks wireless and power management + [Toshiba Satellite series]Trying to use built-in webcam breaks wireless and/or power management ** Tags added: karmic -- [Toshiba Satellite series]Trying to use built-in webcam breaks wireless and/or power management https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/554263 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 318448] Re: [Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900/Hybrid][em28xx]Missing device files (/dev/dvb)
Based on the Gentoo patch of Terratec Cinergy XS[1] I inspected the source files in question: /usr/src/linux/drivers/media/video/em28xx/em28xx-cards.c /usr/src/linux/drivers/media/video/em28xx/em28xx-dvb.c In em28xx-cards.c I've noted in sections for cards, (line 747 and after) that the regular HVR-900 has these lines but the R2 model does not: .has_dvb = 1, .dvb_gpio = hauppauge_wintv_hvr_900_digital, More differences, same file lines 2054, 2055: case EM2880_BOARD_HAUPPAUGE_WINTV_HVR_900: ctl->demod = XC3028_FE_ZARLINK456; vs. lines 2061, 2062, 2063: case EM2880_BOARD_HAUPPAUGE_WINTV_HVR_900_R2: /* djh - Not sure which demod we need here */ ctl->demod = XC3028_FE_DEFAULT; I assume "demod" stands for demodulator so I Googled around a bit and found that the demodulator for HVR-900 (R2) is the Micronas drx397x[2] which was had no support until a driver for it was written and included in a new branch called em28xx-new by Markus Rechberger.[3] In em28xx-dvb.c lines 495-499: case EM2880_BOARD_HAUPPAUGE_WINTV_HVR_900: case EM2880_BOARD_EMPIRE_DUAL_TV: dvb->frontend = dvb_attach(zl10353_attach, &em28xx_zl10353_xc3028_no_i2c_gate, &dev->i2c_adap); vs. lines 545-551: case EM2880_BOARD_HAUPPAUGE_WINTV_HVR_900_R2: #ifdef EM28XX_DRX397XD_SUPPORT /* We don't have the config structure properly populated, so this is commented out for now */ dvb->frontend = dvb_attach(drx397xD_attach, &em28xx_drx397xD_with_xc3028, &dev->i2c_adap); jbourdon's link in comment #2 contains instructions for building em28xx- new and replacing the default modules with it. However em28xx-new has been discontinued and apparently there has been some difficulty in migrating functional code over from em28xx-new[4] because support is still lacking. Sources: [1] http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-815022-start-0.html [2] http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Hauppauge_WinTV-HVR-900 [3] http://mcentral.de/hg/~mrec/em28xx-new [4] http://osdir.com/ml/linux.drivers.em28xx/2008-01/msg00035.html I've hunted for and attached the em28xx-new package in case it can be used to fix the problem. According to the README it contains drx3973d driver (this has been tested to work by those who've used em28xx-new before, including myself). Under the ubuntu folder no less. The only thing is, I have no idea what the status of this thing is upstream. Maybe they've already got work in progress for a new driver. ** Attachment added: "em28xx-new-20090409.tar.gz" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/42631450/em28xx-new-20090409.tar.gz -- [Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900/Hybrid][em28xx]Missing device files (/dev/dvb) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/318448 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 318448] Re: [Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900/Hybrid][em28xx]Missing device files (/dev/dvb)
Ok, after checking some visual references on Google I now concur, this is not model H. I thought the H stood for hybrid, but apparently even the non-H HVR-900 is a hybrid tuner. -- [Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900/Hybrid][em28xx]Missing device files (/dev/dvb) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/318448 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 318448] Re: [Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900H/Hybrid][em28xx]Missing device files (/dev/dvb)
The device is indeed identified as Hauppauge WinTV HVR 900 (R2) (card=18)) according to 'lsusb', BUT... the casing has the word 'Hybrid' printed on it. I believe it has to be the same model because the regular one as far as I know is already working. ** Summary changed: - [Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900H/Hybrid][em28xx]Missing device files (/dev/dvb) + [Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900/Hybrid][em28xx]Missing device files (/dev/dvb) -- [Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900/Hybrid][em28xx]Missing device files (/dev/dvb) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/318448 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 318448] Re: [Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900][em28xx]Missing device files
Could the second post in the thread below hold the answer? http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-815022-start-0.html To summarize, the OP in the thread has a related device (the Terratec Cinergy XS USB) which apparently uses the same hardware. According to the second post, there is a patch in kernel 2.6.33 that makes this work. Patch is also included in the post, but I don't know anything about applying kernel patches. If someone guides me through this I can help test it. If it works -- and since other stuff is being pulled in from 2.6.33 too -- the patch could be backported to the Lucid kernel to allow for this tuner to function out of box. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) => Ubuntu Kernel Team (ubuntu-kernel-team) -- [Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900][em28xx]Missing device files https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/318448 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 551754] [NEW] [Lucid]NoScript crashes Firefox, crashes X-session
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox On Ubuntu 10.04 Beta 1 steps to repeat: 1. Install the NoScript extension 2. Restart Firefox 3. When the Ubuntu start-up page comes up, if you click on the NoScript icon in the lower right corner of the window it will cause a crash all the way back to GDM. I've logged in and done this enough many times to know it repeats with absolute certainty. What other factors affect this issue, I can only speculate. [Bug 318448] Re: [Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900][em28xx]Missing device files
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: This bug was originally filed against Ubuntu 8.10, but seems to still be present in 10.04 (Beta 1, kernel 2.6.32-18-generic). I have for testing a Hauppauge HVR-900 USB based terrestrial TV card. It is reported to work with the em28xx driver, all that is needed is the firmware that I originally had to extract manually: http://www.mythtv.co.nz/mythtv/2008/11/16/hauppauge-hvr-900-tuner-and-ubuntu-810/ Today the required firmware is included in the package linux-firmware- nonfree which can be installed directly from the repositories. The problem is that while the card is detected and modules/firmware loaded the files '/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0' and '/dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0' do not appear. [Bug 318448] Re: [Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900][em28xx]Missing device files
** Description changed: - This bug concerns Ubuntu 8.10. + This bug was originally filed against Ubuntu 8.10, but seems to still be + present in 10.04 (Beta 1, kernel 2.6.32-18-generic). - I have a case of Hauppauge HVR-900 USB based terrestrial TV card. - It is reported to work with the em28xx driver, all that is needed is the firmware that I extracted and added with the instructions from here: + I have for testing a Hauppauge HVR-900 USB based terrestrial TV card. + It is reported to work with the em28xx driver, all that is needed is the firmware that I originally had to extract manually: http://www.mythtv.co.nz/mythtv/2008/11/16/hauppauge-hvr-900-tuner-and-ubuntu-810/ + + Today the required firmware is included in the package linux-firmware- + nonfree which can be installed directly from the repositories. + + The problem is that while the card is detected and modules/firmware + loaded the files '/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0' and + '/dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0' do not appear. Without these files viewing + any broadcasts is impossible. lsusb | grep Hauppauge: Bus 005 Device 004: ID 2040:6502 Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900 - dmesg | grep firmware: - [ 10.362213] firmware: requesting xc3028-v27.fw - [ 10.796026] xc2028 0-0061: Loading 80 firmware images from xc3028-v27.fw, type: xc2028 firmware, ver 2.7 - [ 10.856020] xc2028 0-0061: Loading firmware for type=BASE MTS (5), id . - [ 11.749255] xc2028 0-0061: Loading firmware for type=MTS (4), id b700. + sudo tail -f /var/log/messages when inserting the tuner into a USB port: + [ 1378.728075] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5 + [ 1378.866848] usb 1-3: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice + [ 1378.901423] em28xx: New device WinTV HVR-900 @ 480 Mbps (2040:6502, interface 0, class 0) + [ 1378.901611] em28xx #0: chip ID is em2882/em2883 + [ 1379.077879] em28xx #0: i2c eeprom 00: 1a eb 67 95 40 20 02 65 d0 12 5c 03 82 1e 6a 18 + [ 1379.077914] em28xx #0: i2c eeprom 10: 00 00 24 57 66 07 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 + [ 1379.077945] em28xx #0: i2c eeprom 20: 46 00 01 00 f0 10 02 00 b8 00 00 00 5b e0 00 00 + [ 1379.077976] em28xx #0: i2c eeprom 30: 00 00 20 40 20 6e 02 20 10 01 01 01 00 00 00 00 + [ 1379.078007] em28xx #0: i2c eeprom 40: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 + [ 1379.078038] em28xx #0: i2c eeprom 50: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 + [ 1379.078069] em28xx #0: i2c eeprom 60: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 18 03 34 00 30 00 + [ 1379.078100] em28xx #0: i2c eeprom 70: 32 00 37 00 38 00 31 00 39 00 33 00 31 00 38 00 + [ 1379.078131] em28xx #0: i2c eeprom 80: 00 00 1e 03 57 00 69 00 6e 00 54 00 56 00 20 00 + [ 1379.078162] em28xx #0: i2c eeprom 90: 48 00 56 00 52 00 2d 00 39 00 30 00 30 00 00 00 + [ 1379.078193] em28xx #0: i2c eeprom a0: 84 12 00 00 05 50 1a 7f d4 78 23 fa fd d0 28 89 + [ 1379.078224] em28xx #0: i2c eeprom b0: ff 00 00 00 04 84 0a 00 01 01 20 77 00 40 36 a5 + [ 1379.078255] em28xx #0: i2c eeprom c0: 13 f0 74 02 01 00 01 79 5c 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 + [ 1379.078287] em28xx #0: i2c eeprom d0: 84 12 00 00 05 50 1a 7f d4 78 23 fa fd d0 28 89 + [ 1379.078318] em28xx #0: i2c eeprom e0: ff 00 00 00 04 84 0a 00 01 01 20 77 00 40 36 a5 + [ 1379.078349] em28xx #0: i2c eeprom f0: 13 f0 74 02 01 00 01 79 5c 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 + [ 1379.078385] em28xx #0: EEPROM ID= 0x9567eb1a, EEPROM hash = 0x58673bdd + [ 1379.078392] em28xx #0: EEPROM info: + [ 1379.078398] em28xx #0: AC97 audio (5 sample rates) + [ 1379.078403] em28xx #0: 500mA max power + [ 1379.078411] em28xx #0: Table at 0x24, strings=0x1e82, 0x186a, 0x + [ 1379.079114] em28xx #0: Identified as Hauppauge WinTV HVR 900 (R2) (card=18) + [ 1379.085953] tveeprom 2-0050: Hauppauge model 65018, rev B2C0, serial# 1287478 + [ 1379.085966] tveeprom 2-0050: tuner model is Xceive XC3028 (idx 120, type 71) + [ 1379.085978] tveeprom 2-0050: TV standards PAL(B/G) PAL(I) PAL(D/D1/K) ATSC/DVB Digital (eeprom 0xd4) + [ 1379.085989] tveeprom 2-0050: audio processor is None (idx 0) + [ 1379.085997] tveeprom 2-0050: has radio + [ 1379.089772] tvp5150 2-005c: chip found @ 0xb8 (em28xx #0) + [ 1379.096058] tuner 2-0061: chip found @ 0xc2 (em28xx #0) + [ 1379.096216] xc2028 2-0061: creating new instance + [ 1379.096220] xc2028 2-0061: type set to XCeive xc2028/xc3028 tuner + [ 1379.096232] usb 1-3: firmware: requesting xc3028-v27.fw + [ 1379.099238] xc2028 2-0061: Loading 80 firmware images from xc3028-v27.fw, type: xc2028 firmware, ver 2.7 + [ 1379.144051] xc2028 2-0061: Loading firmware for type=BASE MTS (5), id . + [ 1380.046672] xc2028 2-0061: Loading firmware for type=MTS (4), id b700. + [ 1380.061536] xc2028 2-0061: Loading SCODE for type=MTS LCD NOGD MONO IF SCODE HAS_IF_4500 (6002b004), id b700. + [ 1380.245335] input: em28xx IR (em28xx #0) as /devices/pci:00/:00:1d.7/usb1/1-3/input/input9 + [ 1380.245778] em28xx #0: Con
[Bug 318448] Re: Unable to view digital broadcasts with em28xx
Can't be a duplicate of bug 278656 because having the firmware present does not solve the problem. I am reconfirming this bug on Lucid Beta 1. The card is properly detected and the firmware is loaded, but the files '/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0' and '/dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0' are still not present. Any and all DVB utilities out there seem to want them there, so as it stands the device I have to test -- 2040:6502 Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900 -- is still useless. jbourdon's trick was for Ubuntu 8.10 so I wonder what it would take to get that magic back for Lucid? linux-firmware-nonfree version 1.7, kernel 2.6.32-18-generic ** Summary changed: - Unable to view digital broadcasts with em28xx + [Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900][em28xx]Missing device files ** Tags added: em28xx i386 kernel-bug lucid verification-needed -- [Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900][em28xx]Missing device files https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/318448 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Confirming bug with kernel 2.6.32-18-generic Maybe this bug should be filed against xserver-xorg-video-ati package as well? chicken159, can you post more detailed information about your hardware? Seeing as you are on a different video card and architecture you must be using a different machine from mine.
