[Bug 1056703] [NEW] Please include iMac display resolution by default in 12.10

2012-09-26 Thread Andrew Fenn
Public bug reported:

Not sure if this is the right package to request against however upon
install of 12.10 today, in the Displays setting manager there is no
option for the resolution of 2560x1440 which is the resolution my mac
uses (using 2560x1600 leaves black borders).

To workaround the issue I did the following..

 xrandr --newmode 2560x1440_60.00 311.83 2560 2744 3024 3488 1440 1441
 1444 1490 -HSync +Vsync
 xrandr --addmode Virtual1 2560x1440_60.00

At which point I could then select the resolution from Displays. My
computer is an iMac 27 Mid 2011 edition.

[Bug 879513] Re: nautilus keeps active window status when it shouldn't

2011-11-12 Thread Andrew Fenn
Ok, so I have been able to come up with a use case that always
reproduces the bug for me. It seems I left out a critical piece of
information.

You must already have gedit open with another file.

** Description changed:

  Expected behaviour:
+ - Open gedit so that it is active on your workspace (my tests show no opened
file is needed but gedit needs to already be open)
  - In the folder window press enter to open a text document
  - Wait for gedit to go full screen
  - The active window should now be gedit, press ctrl+f to search for text and
perform over keyboard commands on gedit

  Actual Behaviour:

Nautilus keeps the active window status even though gedit may be
completely full screen. Any key commands pressed go to nautilus even
though the window it hiding behind the now full screen application.

gedit is just the example, it could be any application not opened with
the mouse. It seems that because no mouse input is received the new
window whatever it may be never becomes the active window. This is
wrong, the application that is launched by pressing the enter button
should also become active not just for mouse clickers.

I can also confirm the fix doesn't work for my other computer. The
differences between this one and the one which has no issues is that the

issues with the patch is not in a vm and was upgraded from an install of

[Bug 875156] [NEW] Navigating with just keyboard commands is broken

2011-10-15 Thread Andrew Fenn
Public bug reported:

When typing the name of a file with the in window searcher thing (see
attached screenshot, I have no idea what this is called) it no longer
works properly.

Expected behaviour is that:

1) You open a new folder window
2) Start typing the name of a file or folder in that directory
3) You press enter to traverse your file system
4) repeat step 2

What I am getting is that after I begin typing the searcher tool
disappears and stops functioning or it will work once then after I go
into a new directory stops working then.

Not only this but the text seems to stay there when I use it after
moving to a new directory so you might type something like go and
enter to select the folder named 'good' and enter it, however when you
attempt to type 'bad', you will end up with gobad in the searcher
textbox because the window didn't wipe out the go text upon entering
the next window.

[Bug 669825] Re: evince-thumbnailer doesn't save outside of /home directory

2011-08-15 Thread Andrew Fenn
I feel like you're kind of missing my point. It's not that the app armor
profile is wrong, it's that evince never gives you any indication of
what's wrong or that there is even a problem happening.

Think about another user running this outside via command line, how are
they suppose to know it's app armor causing a problem if there is no
error message of any kind? There isn't even an error message when a
thumbnail can not be saved.

In the interests of anyone that comes across this bug with the same
issue.. Is this simply not the program to be used for generating
thumbnails via command line? I had a look around but this one seems
quite good in my opinion since it generates thumbnails for movies, pdfs
and other things.

Link type is part of the free desktop spec so I am assuming gnome-panel not

Since you're already a member over at gnome maybe you would in a better

done too so others following the progress here can see the status over

It is because I wanted to use the thumbnailer manually for generating
thumbnails outside the home directory for something unrelated to its
intended use. For example as a way of generating thumbnails of PDFs on a
web server which lives in /var/www

On second thought I guess it makes sense to restrict the home directory
however app armor completely threw me off because I didn't receive any
error message about why nothing was being generated.

[Bug 284750] Re: License change, time to package it up

2010-05-08 Thread Andrew Fenn
Just an update. The latest version of the nvidia cg toolkit now comes
with the following license (attached)

Notes of interest are:

- Rights and Limitations of Grant. NVIDIA hereby grants Customer the
following non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, non-transferable right
to use the SOFTWARE, with the following limitations:

- Rights. Customer may use, reproduce, distribute, publicly display and
publicly perform the SOFTWARE.

- No Modification. The SOFTWARE may be redistributed providing that
distributed Cg compiler and runtime binaries are unmodified, except for
decompression and compression.

I believe this should be satisfactory enough for it to be able to enter
Debian non-free and propagate its way into Ubuntu.

[Bug 545841] [NEW] gwibber-service stays at 90% cpu after adding twitter account

2010-03-24 Thread Andrew Fenn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gwibber

Steps:
1) Installed a clean version of Ubuntu 10.04 beta and updated all packages.
2) Added my twitter account details and observed that my messages show up as
expected

The problem is that after doing this and closing the Gwibber window, the
gwibber-service process continues in the background running constantly
at 80 to 90% cpu.

[Bug 545899] [NEW] Can not add desktop URL locations to the main gnome menu

2010-03-24 Thread Andrew Fenn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I ran into a problem today on all distributions from Hardy up to the
latest version of Ubuntu including 10.04 beta.

You can test this by creating the following file in
/usr/share/applications/test.desktop

Insert the information below to the file..

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Type=Link
Name=Load Google
URL=www.google.com
Categories=GNOME;GTK;Utility;

It should then appear in the menu under Applications - Accessories
however it doesn't. desktop files with Type=Application however do
appear in the menu as expected. You can test this by changing our
test.desktop file like so..

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Type=Application
Name=Load Google
Exec=/etc/alternatives/x-www-browser www.google.com
Categories=GNOME;GTK;Utility;

The latter example is the only work around I can find. Can anyone fill
me in on why these do not appear?

[Bug 476471] Re: gnome-panel doesn't let me add locations

2010-03-23 Thread Andrew Fenn
I just tested this in Ubuntu 10.04 Beta and it's still the same issue
(surprise surprise) as with every other version of ubuntu.

Trying the first example I gave before doesn't work. Trying the second
example I gave before does work (the same as every other version of
ubuntu).

I've attempted to look at fixing this issue myself however gnome panel
source code documentation is a mess.

The README file tells me to look at a non-existant INSTALL file. The
GnomePanel web page links to a lot of non-existent web pages and has no
helpful information at all.

This bug is more then a problem with the menu editor program. Adding

[Bug 494081] Re: PPA package builds based on nvidia-cg-toolkit fail to build

I'd also like to point out that I seems that this bug is being dealt
with already. Your best bet to fix this is to take a look at #284750 and
also on debian.. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=502457

Once Debian has built a package for it Ubuntu will most likely auto
include it in whatever next release gets it pulled in. My suggestion is
that you attempt to get it included faster there so it can be included
in ubuntu quicker.

Thanks for responding so fast to my bug report however could to please
clue me into how this relates to the Ubuntu being mis spelled bug?

With this bug when you select etc. as the correct spelling it still
says it's wrong and continues to offer etc. as the correct spelling.
It will also recursively keep adding dots every time you select the
correct spelling.

Does this happen in the bug that you have marked this bug as a duplicate
of because in my opinion these look like completely different issues.

[Bug 419681] [NEW] ctrl+c copying files unresponsive under certain conditions

2009-08-26 Thread Andrew Fenn
Public bug reported:

Using standard Ubuntu jaunty I have noticed a minor bug which is
effecting my ability to copy files.

The following steps are required to reproduce the problem:
1) Navigate to any folder in the GUI using only the keyboard (arrows and enter
to open folders)
2) Navigate to a folder you have not been to since starting Ubuntu (still using
only keys)
3) Select a file (using keys) or ctrl+a then press ctrl+c (only press once)

The expected result is that files are copied to clipboard, however what
I experience is that the ctrl+c command is ignored until I press ctrl+c
again for a second time at which point it functions as expected.

[Bug 158249] Re: [needs-packaging] gcad3d

2009-04-22 Thread Andrew Fenn
It's freeware however I don't see any source code available to compile
it myself, I tried running the download however there are problems
because it's looking for a dependency in the wrong place (I already have
it installed). This kind of thing could be avoided if I have the ability
to compile it myself. If the source code is available then great,
however I only see a binary.

With that being said, with only a binary it's going to be a complete
pain to maintain this thing. I suggest you go to the author and convince
him or her to release the source code under any license they like then
put in a request to package it in Debian (then add the request status
here). When Debian adds it, Ubuntu will pull it from Debian when they
next take a snapshot of unstable.

[Bug 294115] [NEW] debuild screws up bash if you do ctrl+c

2008-11-05 Thread Andrew Fenn
Public bug reported:

Steps:

1 - debuild -S
2 - Wait until it wants you to sign your dsc file and asks for a password
3 - Press ctrl+c to quit

After you do this bash will screw up and not display characters
correctly, you then have to quit bash to fix the problem.

[Bug 22070] Re: Logitech Quickcam Messenger is not usable

2008-10-31 Thread Andrew Fenn
Anyone know why this isn't supported in the UVC video driver which is
including upstream in the linux kernel?

Perhaps it would be better to ask on the UVC video mailing list why this
isn't the case and try to get it included there. Doing so would be much
better for all distributions of Linux.

[Bug 290368] [NEW] [wishlist] Incorrect syncing of google calender events

2008-10-28 Thread Andrew Fenn
Public bug reported:

Some would call this a feature, for me it's a bug.

Two computers one is set to one time zone, perhaps +7 GMT (computer 1)
the other is +0 GMT (computer 2).

If computer 1 syncs with the google calender first, when computer 2
syncs the times are wrong. On my +7 GMT computer the event time is
correct 3:15pm however on computer 2 the time of the event is marked as
8:15 pm.

This is because in my Google calendar settings the time zone is set to
+7 GMT hence why computer 2 is wrong.

This is correct functionality, however I also need an option so that
whatever time zone the computer is set to it always displays the time
given in the time zone it is set so both computer 1 and 2 would be set
to 3:15 pm.

[Bug 284750] [NEW] License change, time to package it up

2008-10-16 Thread Andrew Fenn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-cg-toolkit

There is already an nvidia-cg-toolkit package which installs the 2004
files directly from Nvidia's website but this package should be made
obsolete. At the time this package needed to be downloaded directly from
Nivida's website due to copyright issues but this is no longer the case.

If one downloads the tgz for Linux ( on this page:
http://developer.nvidia.com/object/cg_toolkit.html#downloads ) there are
multiple exemptions allowing for Debian to re-distribute the package.

Looking at the .tgz file go to /./usr/local/Cg/docs/license.txt

2.1.3 Linux Exception. Notwithstanding the foregoing terms of Section
2.1.1, SOFTWARE designed exclusively for use on the Linux operating
system may be copied and redistributed, provided that the binary
files thereof are not modified in any way (except for unzipping of
  compressed files).

nvidia-cg-toolkit should be packaged and included into Ubuntu as a real
package now that the license has changed to allow it. By doing this it
will then be possible to build debs that suggest or require it such as
Ogre3D and Funguloids that current have it disabled but don't run as
well as they could do.

I have already built a deb for it which is available in my ppa:

[Bug 276551] [NEW] [needs-packaging] TinyXML

2008-09-30 Thread Andrew Fenn
Public bug reported:

TinyXml is a simple, small, minimal, C++ XML parser that can be easily
integrating into other programs. It reads XML and creates C++ objects
representing the XML document. The objects can be manipulated, changed,
and saved again as XML.

License: zlib/libpng License
Website: http://sourceforge.net/projects/tinyxml

If this needs to be requested on debian I would be appreciated if
someone could do it for me.

[Bug 229717] [NEW] gdmsetup only works from terminal

2008-05-12 Thread Andrew Fenn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

1) System- Administration - Login Window
2) Enter password
3) Nothing happens and my disk usage rises dramatically and continues to do so
until I reboot

If I enter the same command in the terminal which happens to be gksu
/usr/sbin/gdmsetup then it will function normally.

Both machines I have do this, both were upgraded from Gutsy to Hardy.

[Bug 226868] [NEW] CEGUI needs to be built differently to work with Ogre3D's default scheme

2008-05-05 Thread Andrew Fenn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libcegui-mk2-1

CEGUI must be configured and built with the following option

./configure --with-default-xml-parser=TinyXMLParser

Currently the default parser used is Xerces XML parser which can not
parse the xml scheme files for Ogre3D.

I am running 8.04 but this was also a problem with Gutsy too. I believe
it will also be a problem with any future release.
