[Bug 573493] Re: No sound from headphone jack

2014-04-16 Thread Andrew Henry
4 years for an update? Wow. Im sorry but I don't have anything else to
offer for this bug report. I have not used Ubuntu for the last 3 years,
so for me, it's not relevant anymore. If no-one else expresses interest
then I suppose it can be closed.

[Bug 630748] Re: iwlagn degrades quickly during normal wifi session

2011-04-05 Thread Andrew Henry
"Support for 4965 is still contained in the iwlagn
driver even though considered a legacy device. Intel affirms
802.11n should work. iwl3945 is no longer supported and will never
have a functional 802.11n mode."

I don't understand this comment either and agree with Alexander Hall; It
sounds like 4965 should get working 802.11n in patch. Another point is
that 3945 does not have hardware support for 802.11n, it only supports
802.11g.

What do you mean firmware? You mean they are fixing their driver? If
it was a firmware issue, then it would mean that to get a fix you
would need to buy a new network card/new laptop with updated chipset
firmware to get the fix.

It's obviously not a firmware issue, as wireless N works flawlessly on
Windows with the same chipset. But it is a bit of a bummer that we
have to put up with disabled wireless n. In fact, by doing that, it's
making it worse for Ubuntu users, because I did at least have working
wireless N in Ubuntu 10.04, and yeah, it could degrade, but it was
intermittent and to be honest I didn't really notice that much. Now
when I get an enforced disable from Canonical, I *do* notice that
speeds are slower cause im only running G.

Wouldn't it have been better to give us the choice, simply by doing
nothing and just publishing in the 10.10 release notes that there was
a driver issue and Intel werre working on it? What is the argument
for actively disabling 802.11n? I could have quite happily
re-configured my router and laptop so that I only connected to
wireless G if I was that bothered about the N degrading.

[Bug 539912] Re: [lucid] current battery charge not easily accessable

2010-04-13 Thread Andrew Henry
Some people prefer time (like me) when the battery is discharging and
percent when on mains, and some people prefer percentage all the time.
It must be possible to have both as options!

Does the battery actually stop charging when it reaches 100% or does the
mains cable constantly charge the battery?

Is there a way using gpm to only charge the battery when it drops below
a certain percent? I cannot find info on this anywhere.

[Bug 108623] Re: totem isn't buffering correctly

2009-11-18 Thread Andrew Henry
status confirmed, Won't fix !?!?

Can someone please investigate this issue further. Whether it is a
Totem bug, Gnome bug, Gstreamer bug, we still need to know so that it
can be pushed upstream. There is no indication at gnome bugs on the
link at the top of the page or here, where the issue lies!

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 amd64 and STILL have this issue when playing
Quicktime trailers or ISO/MKV files on my LAN (wireless).

VLC in Ubuntu 9.10 can play the same ISO over the wireless LAN with next to no
buffering/stuttering issues, but Totem-gstreamer has major stuttering issues,
probably due to the buffering problem mentioned in this bug.
Playing Quicktime trailers at Standard Def are OK, but play a 480p HD trailer
and it can start stuttering after 10-20s or so, and when it gets to that point,
it will just buffer continuously and play 1-2s clips until the buffer runs out
and then re-buffer. Playing 720p is even worse.

I edited gconf-editor and set the buffer_size=5 and
network_buffer_threshold=4 and this enabled 480p trailers to work, but
when playing 720p the issue still exists. My settings did take effect,
and now it buffers 5s and then when the buffer runs out it buffers
another 4s and plays that but bever gets to the point where it can play
without stopping to rebuffer.

I have a 24Mbit broadband connection and can download a steady 1.6MB/s
without issue. I tested this in the morning on a weekday when Quicktime
trailers is probably not so utilised.

I assume that the only way to fix this is to set buffer_size=30 seconds
to cope with large amounts of video data when streaming. But the
buffering in Totem is inherently broken and should be fixed. The way
the two settings I mention above work appear to function as intended and
expected (little hard to tell actually), but "the Totem pipe is too
thin" is the feeling I get. How come VLC and Mplayer can buffer more
and display less stuttering? Do they buffer in the background? buffer
more? I have Totem set to connection_speed=11 by the way, for LAN.

One other broken function in Totem is that when I pause the Quicktime
trailer (in the hope it will contine buffering the rest of the movie),
it just stops downloading entirely.

That this problem has existed since Fesity is just amazing.

[Bug 343067] Re: Playing a DVD iso in totem causes the iso to be mounted in .gvfs and not played.

2009-06-04 Thread Andrew Henry
Hi.

I have exacly the same issue.

Running 9.04 amd64 which was upgraded from 8.10 amd64. It worked fine
in 8.10 and now does not in 9.04.

I have all the gstreamer plugins installed (good, bad, ugly, gnolin etc)
and libdvdcss, and previously I could drag an ISO to the totem window
for it to play. Then with the 8.10 release (I think) I could right
click an ISO and play it in totem, as well as play an ISO over an SSH
link, which was great.

Now in Ubuntu 9.04 it seems playing ISO is indeed broken. I start it
from terminal and do not get any errors when it fails to play the DVD.
I do not think that this issue should be simply fobbed off to upstream.
There are other grave packaging errors with totem in Ubuntu 9.04, such
as the upnp mess. It is not unlikely that this is also an Ubuntu bug
and not an upstream. If we just forward this to upstream it's not going
to go anywhere. It makes more sense that Canonical looks at it first to
decide if it is upstream or not rather than just passing the buck
immediately.

2009-02-23 Thread Andrew Henry
I have an Acer Aspire 5021 and did a HOWTO for Dapper Drake years ago
for getting the wireless working with acer_acpi 0.3 and bcm43xx.

I have been using this old laptop as a server running CentOS for the
last few years and just reinstalled it with Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop 64-bit.

I enabled the B43 proprietary driver after the fresh install, but the
'acer_acpi' bit isn't working. I used acer_acpi 0.3 at the time of
dapper drake, so did some searching, found newer 0.11.2 acer_acpi, found
that it is replaced with acer_wmi, and then found this bug, that
acer_wmi should be working by default on Acer laptops.

It doesn't.

will try modprobing acer_wmi tonight.

it still works, consistently. That is strange even if the problem is

Hi Pedro!

I respectfully disagree. The bug that this is supposedly a duplicate of
is regarding DVD playback in Totem with fast forward/rewind and menus
not working. My bug regards the ability to play ISO files that I have
made myself.

If I get a raw DV file that I have recorded myself, it will play in
Totem-gstreamer. I can then convert the same file to MPEG-2 and it will
play in Totem-gstreamer, but as soon as I create an ISO file of that
MPEG-2 file, it will not play in Totem-gstreamer. Totem-gstreamer has
no issues playing other ISO files that contain MPEG-2 video (admittedly,
menus and controls do not work, but my ISOs do not play whatsoever).

I would have logged this as a bug with dvdauthor, but then I found out
that my ISO would play without issue in Mplayer and VLC, so this is
obviously a Totem-gstreamer issue.

Kind regards,
Andrew

[Bug 288868] Re: terminal server client disables mouse on desktop

2009-01-07 Thread Andrew Henry
damn it. I was having the same problem, and saw the post above about
killing tsclient, and thought that would solve the problem.

However, I had just uninstalled the nVidia proprietary driver and
installed the free nv driver because I was having performance problems
on my desktop and wanted to see if they were caused by the driver. So
there I was running the nv driver, and I started vnc via tsclient to
test out the above tip, and what do you know!! It didn't crash! Seems
like this problem is possibly caused by the nVidia driver, which is a
real bummer because it's the only way of getting suspend to ram to work
:(

Seems like I had the opposite effect to others here, but now my VNC
works fine with nv driver. Just one more comment: tsclient VNC has
ALWAYS worked for me to another computer: a CentOS 5.2 server. Now I
tried to VNC to Ubuntu Server 8.10 and it was only this that was
hanging... CentOS was still working fine.

2008-10-09 Thread Andrew Henry
I just tried Intrepid beta last night on a Lenovo Thinkpad T61 that has
an Intel PRO wireless 4965 AGN and it does not work. No wireless
networks found.

I have a HP Pavilion dv9297ea with an Intel PRO wireless 3945 and
Intrepid beta works OK on that computer and NetworkManager 0.7.0 can see
all wireless networks.

Has the fix regressed again?

[Bug 280664] [NEW] Totem-gstreamer does not play home-made ISO files

2008-10-09 Thread Andrew Henry
Public bug reported:

I have an issue playing home made ISO files with Totem in Ubuntu 8.04.
ISO files that are DVD copies ripped with k9Copy play just fine as do
most (but not all) other DVD ISO copies I have downloaded. DV file from
camcorder converted to mpeg with ffmpeg, then authored with dvdauthor
and mkisofs does not play in Totem, but plays just fine in both VLC and
Mplayer (all software from Ubuntu repos, none are built manually).

Here are the commands I use to make the ISO from a DV file:

ffmpeg -i file.dv -threads 2 -mbd rd -flags +trell -cmp 2 -subcmp 2 -g
100 -pass 1/2 -target pal-dvd /tmp/file.mpg

 dvdauthor -o /tmp/DVD/ -t --video=720x576+pal+16:9
--audio=ac3+en --file=/tmp/file.mpg

 dvdauthor -o /tmp/DVD/ -T

 mkisofs -dvd-video -o file.iso /tmp/DVD/

and here is the output I get when trying to play the file in totem as
root (I do "sudo bash" first to get root shell, as playing it as the
file owner simply says I do not have permissions):

I feel your pain man. Seems like they focus on other things, and this
is not a hot feature in the marketplace. To be fair though, isn't this
a kernel issue? Maybe Novell do extra fixes in their kernels to get
certain features working, whilst Canonical focuses on desktop stuff.
Suppose that if we want a working dmcrypt, then we need to stick to
Suse/Redhat. I swapped to CentOS5 on my server just because of this
issue (not dmcrypt, as it sucks as bad there cause its an old kernel,
but there is more focus on the server side than I think canonical does).

I compiled 2.6.23.9 and this seems to have fixed the problem. disk

kcryptd/0 takes 60% according to top), but disk activity is now fast and

[Bug 82528] Re: Write load on DM-Crypt LUKS partition with reiserfs jams system

2007-12-03 Thread Andrew Henry
I have exactly the same problem on a newly installed Debian Etch system
that was fully encrypted (except /boot) using the guided partitioner. I
have an external WD MyBook 320GB 1394a disk that was unencrypted.
Performance was fine to the 1394a disk (both read/write speeds as well
as LAN transfer rates) until I encrypted it then I get exactly the same
issues:

LAN performance both read and write is almost exactly halved. 11MB to 6MB
ethernet and 2.5MB to 1.5MB read wireless.
Writes to 1394a the disk overload the CPU so that mouse pointer hangs every few
seconds.
Writes to 1394a disk don't write at a steady rate, but suspend (no CPU) then
after a while continue. kjournal and kcryptd/0 are the 2 processes taking all
the CPU, but when the write suspends, they drop to zero.
Read rate is constant but rate is halved.

Does not seem Ubuntu related or related to that particular kernel as
Etch does not use same kernel as Feisty or Gutsy.

I agree that Canonical "attendance" on Launchpad seems quite poor, going
from the bugs i have followed. I do not even think there has been a
Canonical response to this bug yet! I said this earlier, but here it is
again: This issue was totally fixed for me on two seperate laptops
running amd64 Gutsy one day last week when a few updates came through
Update Manager, and I use full Compiz, AWN and have nVidia Go 7600 on
one of the laptops.. So if people have updated and still get this issue
then it must have different reasons, but obviously someone is trying to
fix it despite lack of communication on launchpad. By the way,
disabling ipv6 didn't do squat for me. I think it was the updates that
upgraded Gnome to 2.20.1 that did it.

How do you come to this conclusion? My first thought would be GDM but
no, I am not sure either. To jump to the conclusion that it is the
kernel is a bit of a long shot though.

They make new releases simply because Debians unstable repos have been
significantly updated ;) I think they relied too much on this fact with
Gutsy and I don't really see anything that Canonical have *added* to
Gutsy besides the stuff that came through from Debian. But then again,
there is so much to monitor and I only look at what interests me, which
i suspect most people do. But don't be fooled by the blandness of the
desktop! Yes, it may look like Fiesty but don't forget that all
packages are newer versions. To think that the desktop should look
significantly different between releases is a side effect of having used
Windows too long! Linux is a progressive development and many of the
tools I use have fixed issues I had in previous releases or added new
functions that I now use.

[Bug 162633] Brightness keeps resetting to max [Gutsy]

2007-11-14 Thread Andrew Henry
Public bug reported:

I just upgraded a HP Pavilion dv9297ea from Feisty to Ubuntu Gutsy amd64
yesterday. Using nVidia proprietary drivers from the repos. Since
upgrading, there seems to be more controls for controlling the
brightness depending on whether im using AC or battery. I had the AC
plugged in all the time and I manually lowered the brightness to under
50% but the brightness kept resetting to max.

It seems to be triggered by something, like using certain apps. I did
not test thoroughly enough, so maybe I should leave system running
without using it to see if it resets. It does not reset immediately,
but it happened to me 4 or 5 times during one hour of using my laptop.

[Bug 155393] Re: Internet extremely slow in Gutsy after upgrade

2007-11-14 Thread Andrew Henry
I experience that web browsing is noticeably slower in Gutsy then
Feisty, but I also have another issue that is probably just another
symptom... Firefox seems to get halfway through loading a page, then
'hangs' on one item (not always the same item) and Firefox then turns
gray for several seconds up to several minutes before continuing. Half
of the time, Firefox eventually loads the entire page, but sometimes it
hangs indefinitely. This is on amd64

I had to install 32-bit Firefox 2.0.0.8 to get Java 1.6 and I have not
yet experienced any hangs whilst browsing. Is this an amd64 issue?

[Bug 98902] Re: suspend no longer works, but did previously

I just realised something...sleep and hibernate both work almost
perfectly when using the proprietary nvidia driver (nvidia-glx). This
bug applies to the Xorg supplied nv driver.

[Bug 98902] suspend no longer works, but did previously

2007-03-29 Thread Andrew Henry
Public bug reported:

HP Pavilion dv9297ea with Feisty beta.

I had previously installed Herd 5 and suspend and resume both worked.
On wake, I got a crash report, but it was minor...the actual function
worked. Wifi even worked after waking.

I clean installed Feisty beta and neither suspend nor hibernate work any
more. On wake, the screen is blank on all tty's and keyboard input
seems to have no effect.

I can see that this bug has previously been reported in edgy, and I have
added a comment to that bug, but just in case edgy bugs are no longer
given priority, I will open a new one here for Feisty.

[Bug 98703] Xorg nv driver no longer works at 1440x900

2007-03-29 Thread Andrew Henry
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-driver-nv

This is a regression from Herd 5...

HP Pavilion dv9297ea with nVidia GeForce Go 7600 running Feisty Beta. I
had previously installed Herd 5 and Xorg determined that driver should
be vesa at 1024x768 on fresh install.

Installed beta from scratch (no upgrade) and Xorg determined nv driver
at 1440x900 (correct resolution). I have been using nv driver up until
today at 1440x900 but I installed latest updates today which have
probably been released in last 5 days, and the new driver no longer
works at 1440x900. It is set to 1280x800 after installing updates, and
doing 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg ' to select 1440x900
seems to work (xorg.conf looks ok) but still it maxes out at 1280x800.
I see this under Preferences|Screen Resolution.

I tried editing xorg.conf by hand as well as with dpkg-reconfigure, to
only select 1440x900 resolution at all colour depths, but when
rebooting, Screen Resolution gui tool shows that 1280x800, 1024x768,
800x600 and 640x480 are available. I have to install nvidia-glx driver
to get correct resolution again.

I have same problem with HP Pavilion dv9297ea but I have a workaround
(see laptop testing page, community supplied laptops for full report).

Basically, press mute, plug in phones, then unmute. sound comes through
phones and not main speaker. To reverse, press mute, unplug phones,
then unmute...sound now comes through main speakers again.

[Bug 59715] Re: alsa snd-hda-intel hp laptops

2007-03-18 Thread Andrew Henry
I have a workaround for this bug...

Play the movie clip without headphones plugged in, press the mute
button, then plug in the headphones. Press the mute button again to
unmute. sound will then only come through headphones.

To reverse the procedure... (must be done otherwise when you remove
headphones, no sound will come through main speakers, but if you plug in
the phones again, sound comes through main speakers)... press the mute
button, then remove the phones then unmute, to get sound through main
speakers.

This worked for me in Feisty Herd 5 on a HP Pavilion dv9297ea with Totem
Movie Player.

[Bug 54294] Re: Failed to allocate mem resource #6 ...

I get the exact same error (cannot allocate resource region 7 & 8) on
both a 1.5 yr old Acer Aspire 5021WLMi and a brand new HP DV9297ea. I
do not think I have the latest BIOS update for the HP--there is an F.15
version and I have F.14--and I have never upgraded the Acer BIOS, but
the HP was manufactured in feb 2007, so why would a BIOS update help?
Is there any more specific info you can give Ben, that leads you to
recommend a BIOS update?

I didn't file this bug and I do not have an ipw3945, I just wanted to
add to the bug that I have bcm43xx and get the same problem, so it might
not be specific to the ipw3945 driver.

If anyone has a good solution to try then of course I will install Edgy
again as it goes quite quickly with having /home on a separate
partition, but I have one laptop used by my spouse and myself and cannot
afford to have a broken edgy installation for several weeks waiting for
suggestions to pop-up.

[Bug 63418] Re: CPU soft lockup during bootup

2006-12-01 Thread Andrew Henry
first attempt at replying failed...second time lucky...

I'm getting (or was getting as I downgraded to Dapper again) "BUG: soft
lockup detected on CPU#0!". Many times I would also get an error about
kernel panic...in fact I got kernel panics more often than soft lockups,
but I cannot remember the whole error message with the kernel panic.

When I boot-up with nosplash, I immediately get 4 error/warning
messages, which I get even with Dapper:

"PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 7 of the bridge :00:06.0"

...or region 8, and then most of the time, I would get the soft lockup
message (only in Edgy). In Dapper, these 4 initial errors do not seem
to affect the rest of the boot process and I have never had any issues
running Dapper. Sometimes (very rarely), I could boot all the way into
X after the upgrade to Edgy, but as soon as I started typing my login
name, it would freeze and I would need to reboot. Once, after I did a
clean install of Edgy, I could get into the GUI, but it would freeze at
random points after a short while.

As I am upgrading, acer_acpi, the module that turns on my wireless, does
not work in the new kernel, so I need to compile and install it again,
but because the lockups happen so quickly, even when booting in safe
mode, I do not get chance to do any of this.

If I upgrade again to Edgy, is it possible to keep 2.6.15-27-amd64-k8
kernel by removing the commented out section in grubs menu.lst, and boot
using that with Edgy? If that is possible then I could at least have
Edgy until the kernel is fixed. Another workaround I thought about was
to upgrade to a 'knot' release of Edgy with an earlier kernel than
2.6.17-10 where the bug is not present, ans then continue to upgrade
everything apart from the kernel until this is solved.

[Bug 63418] Re: CPU soft lockup during bootup

2006-11-29 Thread Andrew Henry
I just want to add that I get this bug with completely different
hardware. I have an Acer Aspire 5021WLMi with a Broadcom BCM4318 rev 02
chipset that cannot be enabled through hardware/BIOS. I use the
acer_acpi module to turn on the adapter through software and I call it
in /etc/modules, but enable it using a custom pre-up script in
/etc/networking. So, as I get crashes way before this point, I cannot
boot 100% of the time. Dapper works perfectly, but upgrading to Edgy
gave this bug, and a clean install of Edgy didn't help either.
