[Bug 1862715] [NEW] mac mini late 2009 usb 2.0 devices detected as 1.0, run slow

2020-02-10 Thread Andrew M.
Public bug reported:

I've got ubuntu 18.04 LTS installed on an old 2009 mac mini.
Any USB 2.0 device I plug into the mac is detected, but runs at usb 1.0 speeds.

I see ehci hubs in lsusb, but the ohci hubs seem to "grab" whatever
device I plug in.

[Bug 1713017] Re: Enable MIDI support

Any chance this could be added? I know the last message is from 2017,
but there commercial products such as the Yamaha MD-BT01 Bluetooth
Wireless MIDI Adaptor that rely on this being enabled.

Ok, so i installed the latest kernel, generic. How do I test to see if
the bug is fixed? Is it as simple as reproducing the cause of the
problem? Or is there a (stress test / possible scenario test) program
that i can run?

[Bug 128142] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in g_slice_alloc()

2014-02-08 Thread Andrew M Tapp
I don't know about the other guys, but the bug happened to me while
copying files from one location to another. I've since reattempted the
copy while waiting for the bug data to upload and it went smoothly. So I
don't know if I can reproduce the bug for a valgrind log. Is there a way
to set up a running log or something so the next time if it happens, the
log will already be generated without having to reproduce it?

[Bug 889545] Re: Vari-Brightâ„¢ is enabled by default

2013-03-25 Thread Andrew M.
HOLY GOD vari-bright is annoying.

tried the instructions here-
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2055002

but as the poster mentions, even forcing the config file values dosen't persist
after a reboot - as soon as you come back up
/usr/lib/fglrx/etc/ati/amdpcsdb reverts to PP_VariBrightFeatureEnable=V1
(/usr/lib/fglrx/etc/ati/amdpcsdb looks fine though)

driving me bonkers

[Bug 1052292] [NEW] Crashes on Ubuntu installation

2012-09-17 Thread Andrew M
Public bug reported:

(note ubiquity is the package ubuntu selected for me)

Some action in the Ubuntu installer made it crash during installation.
It appeared to me to be during the step where the installer said
something about detecting connected hardware.

I am not sure I can provide much more information.

Looking at the log file, it looks like it crashed right after attempting
to install the wireless card(s). I have two plugged in (for no good
reason), one is a broadcom (it loaded the Broadcom 43xx driver) and the
other is a netgear WG111v3 USB wireless adapter. Ubuntu was connected on
the netgear and the broadcom didn't seem to be functioning.

[Bug 1005028] Re: nvidia: Xorg hangs at 100% CPU when playing video: fallen off the bus

2012-05-29 Thread Andrew M.
If you're desperate to get stability back (like I was,) try installing the
295.53-0ubuntu1~precise~xup1 series drivers from
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates .
I've only had them running for a couple of days, and only watched 2-3 hours of
HD video since then, but so far no crashes.

What perplexes me is that I have two virtually identical HTPC machines
in the house, and only one of them hit this bug.

Same mobo, same proc, same ram, same video card, same ubuntu.

One plays primarily through XBMC with VDPAU, other through
mplayer+VDPAU.

mplayer+VDPAU box crashed all the time until 295.53 drivers installed.

couple of things -
1. this problem persists in 11.10 release version
2. in 11.10, things play nice if I suspend with:

3. bug 24330 is a much much older dup of this one.

[Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

2011-05-21 Thread Andrew M
Confirmed with the latest 270.41.19 pre-release drivers released
yesterday. Has anyone managed to test with 275 beta drivers ?

Also since this is obviously an nvidia binary issue ( doesn't happen
with nouveau ) , is there any point us logging it here ?

[Bug 344878] Re: file name too long when creating new file (ecryptfs_lookup: lookup_one_len() returned [-36] on lower_dentry)

2011-03-02 Thread Andrew M.
This may be a naive question, but will the proposed fix break the
ability to backup an encrypted directory to a fs that doesn't support
xattrs?

(I'm talking specifically about the use-case where I copy my encrypted
home directory directly to like cifs or something.)

[Bug 368962] Re: Can't reboot kvm virtual machines using virsh

2010-05-12 Thread Andrew M
I understand this isn't severe but in the interests of trying to solve a
problem would it be possible to define an element in the XML definition
which is equivalent to saying 'This domain supports ACPI'. If this flag
is set ( it can default to off) then those who know their domain
supports acpi use reboot. Would this be an acceptable change ? If so i
could try and implement it .I understand libvirt doesn't / can't have a
dtd so the barrier for adding elements is low so long as people are
comfortable that this would be a positive change.

[Bug 544814] Re: konsole fonts display

2010-05-10 Thread Andrew M.
I have noticed this as well, particularly with fixed-width bitmap fonts.
I'm trying to use profont, which worked great in 9.10. On 10.04, any
time there is bolding or color, Konsole has trouble - appearing to use
another font entirely.

[Bug 380303] Re: thinkpad-acpi X200 Thinkpad fan fails to spin down .

2010-03-14 Thread Andrew M
Hi Jeremy,
I've just updated to Lucid and I'm using the Linux portland
2.6.34-020634rc1-generic kernel and will let you know if the issue still
occurs. It was still present in 2.6.33 mainline and is still an issue in the
.32 kernel shipping in lucid.

Also i tried to run apport as you requested.

a...@portland:~$ apport-collect -p linux 380303
Usage: apport-kde report number

apport-kde: error: no such option: -p

So i tried this:

a...@portland:~$ apport-collect 380303
Error connecting to Launchpad: [Errno 1] Operation not permitted:
'/home/am/.launchpadlib'
You can reset the credentials by removing the file
/home/am/.cache/apport/launchpad.credentials

I tried removing the .cache/apport directory but that doesn't seem to
help. Any ideas how I can get the info you require. Using Kubuntu.

[Bug 494291] [NEW] kvm: xp won't talk to USB device with host linux-image-2.6.31-16-generic

2009-12-08 Thread Andrew M.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kvm

Trying to get a Ross-Tech pc-car interface working under Ubuntu's
generic kernel image.

Works fine with the kvm-88 image I've compiled myself on my machine, I
have issues with the generic ubuntu image.

I start my windows XP VM image:
sudo qemu-system-x86_64 \
-m 1024 \
-drive file=/mnt/images/xp-base.qcow2,if=virtio,boot=on \
-net nic,macaddr=e0:91:a6:33:28:02,model=virtio \
-net user \
-vnc 127.0.0.1:1 \
-usb \
-usbdevice tablet \
-monitor stdio

then i add my USB device:
(qemu) usb_add host:0403:fa24

XP realizes the device is there, but when I try to use my car
application in XP, it times out trying to communicate with the device.

Now, if I boot Ubuntu and specify my KVM-88 kernel in grub2, *everything works
great*.
I've attached a diff between Ubuntu's kernel config and the KVM-88 config that
actually works.

Any ideas on what this could be???

[Bug 453579] Re: in-place corruption of large files *without fsck or reboot* reported with linux 2.6.31-14.46 on ext4

2009-11-11 Thread Andrew M.
I think I actually *have* seen this...

My setup:
Fileserver, 1.5TB array on JFS bunch of big files (videos mostly, some ISO's
and the like - but none of these files *ever* change)
one client with 400GB internal SATA HDD on ext4, running Karmic with
2.6.31-15-generic AMD64 kernel
one client with 1.5TB external USB HDD on ext4, running Karmic with
2.6.31-15-generic i386 kernel

I invoke rsync from the clients as
rsync -axvc r...@server:/home/some/dir /home/backup-dir

on *both* clients, i had to run rsync about 3 times until i no longer
saw changes.

that is to say that there existed differences in the files even during
2nd rsync, which simply shouldn't be.

Also worth noting that another Karmic machine with ext3 and a ppc kernel
doesn't see this problem. Ran rsync once, and then the second pass
didn't change any files.

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to what files were corrupt or
wrong on the clients after the first sync, they weren't the same between the
two clients and there didn't seem to be any correlation between increased size
and frequency or anything. The giantest files (8 GB's or so) transferred
correctly the first time.

I've still got this elaborate test set up in place, and I'm *very*VERY*
keen to get this worked out so that I can move to Karmic on the server
(no way in hell I'm upgrading until this gets sorted out!!!)

Please let me know if any more specific tests would help or anything.

2009-11-11 Thread Andrew M.
more info from my setup:
i have done memtest on all boxes, everything is fine
network is a wired network (not thinking it should matter, SSH would barf if
packets were coming in with errors,)
the smallest file for which i saw corruption was about 120MB,
the incidence seemed to be about 6 corrupt files every {delete everything on
client, reboot client, run rsync, run rsync again to see what checksums were
wrong} iteration, during which minimally 400GB and about 10,000 files were
transferred

[Bug 471271] [NEW] kwin doesn't honor xrandr --primary flag

2009-11-02 Thread Andrew M.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

Howdy All -
I've noticed on Karmic that I can't seem to hint to KDE which output to use as
my primary (ie where my toolbar goes.)

I've got a Thinkpad T61 with:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)

I have the bulit in LCD on LVDS1 and and an external monitor with VGA
and DVI inputs.

If i connect *only* the VGA to my monitor and tell xrandr:
thinkpad ~ $ xrandr --output LVDS1 --auto --primary ; echo $?
0
thinkpad ~ $ xrandr --output VGA1 --auto --right-of LVDS1 ; echo $?
0
thinkpad ~ $ xrandr --output DVI1 --auto --right-of LVDS1 ; echo $?
0
thinkpad ~ $ xrandr --output LVDS1 --primary ; echo $?
0
KDE behaves properly - VGA is enabled, right of LVDS, and taskbar is on LVDS.

However, if I connect *only* DVI to my monitor and tell xrandr:
thinkpad ~ $ xrandr --output LVDS1 --auto --primary ; echo $?
0
thinkpad ~ $ xrandr --output VGA1 --auto --right-of LVDS1 ; echo $?
0
thinkpad ~ $ xrandr --output DVI1 --auto --right-of LVDS1 ; echo $?
0
thinkpad ~ $ xrandr --output LVDS1 --primary ; echo $?
0
KDE sends my taskbar over to the external monitor (which is wrong - it should
have made internal LCD primary and kept the taskbar there), but screen geometry
and positioning are correct.

[Bug 373245] Re: wakeups kernel core : hrtimer_start_range_ns (tick_sched_timer)

2009-09-05 Thread Andrew M
I did some testing with UXA and EXA (Not XAA) during jaunty with it's
kernels and .30 and it was still present. If it's in intel driver issue
then it's present in both EXA and UXA. UXA is currently the only
supported option with 2.8 afaik.

[Bug 373245] Re: wakeups kernel core : hrtimer_start_range_ns (tick_sched_timer)

2009-08-27 Thread Andrew M
I guess it really depends on how important battery life of notebooks is
for this release. I would anticipate that with the push on net books and
laptops it would be reasonably important.

The battery life has been slowly getting better since Hardy but it still
does make a significant difference.

[Bug 380303] Re: thinkpad-acpi X200 Thinkpad fan fails to spin down .

2009-08-27 Thread Andrew M
Well apparently on Vista ( i don't have vista so can't test this ) with
the thinkpad drivers the fan doesn't spin up unless the machine gets hot
enough. Henrique doesn't really like userspace fan controls from what I
understand, however they are useful for testing.

I have confirmed that at least on a new Linux kernel you can pretty much
go about your business without the fan on at all (at low work loads) for
about half and hour before the system heats up to around 40-42 degrees
c. After which if you turn on the fan at around 1739 (level 1) it can
pretty much cool the system back to 33-35 degrees in a few minutes.

When automatically controlled the fan never seems to drop back from 3371
after it has kicked in initially. I can only imagine that running the
fan at this pace leads to reduced battery life.

[Bug 380293] Re: Ienovo X200 power consumption - power top

2009-08-22 Thread Andrew M
I have followed your instructions. I fully charged the battery, turned
off wi-fi via the RF kill switch, ifconfig eth0 down and turned of wake
on lan. The screen was dimmed and i ran powertop and followed its
instructions.

Then i pulled the power and waited 20 minutes. The attached file
contains the before and after as well as other information I thought may
be useful. I am also fully up to date in karmic.

[Bug 334052] Re: Network Manager Plasmoid won't connect to WPA Enterprise AP's in Jaunty

However, is anyone having trouble with sporadic disconnects and
immediate reconnects? (about every 6 mins the connection drops, then
seconds later is re-established.)

My gut tells me this is a different issue entirely, but I thought I'd
ask...

[Bug 342923] Re: Kubuntu Jaunty Intel 945 GM - Poor sluggish graphics performance on HP/Compaq nc6400 laptop

2009-03-30 Thread Andrew M
I have enabled UXA also and while the performance problems are
significantly reduced, I would not say they are gone. It's still
sluggish compared to intrepid on my x4500 ( IBM thinkpad X200 ).

It has not been unstable for me with UXA however there are some other
issues which I shall place in another bug report.

[Bug 348694] Re: Jaunty will not boot on Dell Optiplex 760 unless hpet=disable

2009-03-27 Thread andrew m. boardman
I have one of these new Dells as well; same problems here. I don't see
a way to make Intrepid usable without disabling acpi completely.
(...and losing a CPU.)

To answer a question above: a lot of the ICH10 support is fairly new.

I'm not convinced that the real problem isn't in Dell's firmware. I
have the A02 bios released on 25 February 2009, as, I suspect, does the
original reporter.

[Bug 334052] Re: Network Manager Plasmoid won't connect to WPA Enterprise AP's in Jaunty

2009-03-26 Thread Andrew M.
Per Hermansson, cheers.

Your patch allows me to successfully connect to the network at my
school. I'll try it at work tomorrow, but I'll bet the hidden SSID
issue with this plasmoid prevents that from working.

** Attachment added: Snippet from syslog showing sucessfull association to
EAP-PEAP(mschapv2) network.

[Bug 296710] Re: warning: ehci_hcd loaded AFTER uhci_hcd and ohci_hcd

2009-03-13 Thread Andrew M.
It's even simpler than you suggest.
 Simply add ehci_hcd to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules
 without changing anything else.

This worked like a champ for me. added the line then regenerated the initramfs,
no more problems.
I've got kubuntu installed on a USB stick, so it was painfully obvious that i
was in usb 1.0 mode for awhile... good to actually have transfer rates back.

[Bug 24330] Re: CIFS mount blocks suspend/hibernate

2009-03-12 Thread Andrew M.
this is not specific to Ubuntu, either - my Gentoo box has the same
problem

also, this isn't a KDE problem at all, it's more a problem of CIFS in
the linux kernel

[Bug 334052] [NEW] Network Manager Applet has trouble with WPA Enterprise AP's in Jaunty

2009-02-24 Thread Andrew M.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: plasma-widget-network-manager

Situation is as follows:
I have wireless networks at work and at school that the latest network manager
plasmoid won't connect to. I've tried literally every combination of settings
in the plasmoid, but still no connection. I am, however, able to connect to
simple WPA-PSK networks with the plasmoid.

I can connect to the enterprise AP's every single time with the old
knetworkmanager using the following settings:
- Network 1 (School) -
ESSID: tamulink-wpa (not hidden)
Security: WPA Enterprise
EAP Method: PEAP
EAP Identity: ** (my username)
EAP Anonymous Identity: blank
EAP Password: ** (my password)

EAP certificate/keyfile fields all blank.
Phase 2 Method: None

- Network 2 (Work) -
ESSID: EEE (hidden)
Security: IEEE 802.1X
Encryption: None
EAP Method: Leap
EAP Identity: ** (my username)
EAP Anonymous Identity: blank
EAP Password: ** (my password)
EAP certificate/keyfile fields all blank.

I'm testing the latest Jaunty with all current packages (updated daily at
least).
