[Bug 338669] Re: (Needs UXA) painting artifacts after qt4.5 upgrade on intel chipset

2009-05-05 Thread Andrew Mason
@Jithin Emmanuel It's only broken for those who cannot use UXA and who
are experiencing this bug.

@naught101 the RC will probably not be backported. There is nothing to
stop you from compiling it yourself on your machine. It's fairly easy to
do but obviously takes a while.

[Bug 342923] Re: (Needs UXA) Kubuntu Jaunty Intel 945 GM - Poor sluggish graphics performance in Kate text, etc.

2009-04-16 Thread Andrew Mason
Hi have the 'magic' line, to enable UXA. It does make a significant
difference but the performance is still sluggish. In comparison at least
to Fedora 11 Beta which is afaik using X server 1.6. I am trying to
work out the differences at the moment. Will write more when I have some
answers.

[Bug 342923] Re: (Needs UXA) Kubuntu Jaunty Intel 945 GM - Poor sluggish graphics performance in Kate text, etc.

2009-04-19 Thread Andrew Mason
I am all for being part of the test group, and its great that they are
working towards fixing X. Is it in any way possible that there could be
ppa's made for the old intel drivers that make jaunty usable again for
release day ? That way , even if its not by default, users can be
directed to install these which would allow the majority of people to
have the new drivers and go through testing, whilst the users who have
problems can revert to the old driver until the team feels that the
issue is resolved. Its a known issue so we don't really need to keep
testing it right ?

2009-04-15 Thread Andrew Mason
My X4500 is also still fairly sluggish compared to intrepid with
UXA/DRI2. Tried out Fedora 11 Beta for comparison which performed like
intrepid did. I'm not sure what the difference in their stack is or if
that bit of information is in anyway helpful. I am happy to reinstall it
and gather information if it would help.

[Bug 380293] [NEW] Ienovo X200 power consumption - power top

2009-05-25 Thread Andrew Mason
Public bug reported:

The Lenovo X200 by all accounts in the media (cnet, zdnet, engadget) and
the thinkpad forums, one of the best performing laptops in terms of
battery life relative to its suggested rating by lenovo. According to
lenovo you can expect 9hrs of use from a 9cell battery and 3 hours from
the 4 cell. Current use under Ubuntu and Linux distros in general is
between 3 - 6 hours on the 9 cell and around 1.5 on the 4 cell even at a
very light usage.

This occurs with every kernel and patch up to 2.6.30-rc7, however
2.6.30-rc7 is by far and away the best performing in terms of power
usage .

[Bug 380303] [NEW] thinkpad-acpi X200 Thinkpad fan fails to spin down .

2009-05-25 Thread Andrew Mason
Public bug reported:

The fan on my thinkpad acpi begins in 'level 1' mode on boot or shortly
after.

r...@portland:~/Kernel# cat /proc/acpi/ibm/fan
status: enabled
speed: 1875
level: 1
commands: level ( is 0-7, auto, disengaged, full-speed)
commands: enable, disable
commands: watchdog ( is 0 (off), 1-120 (seconds))

After some usage it climbs to

r...@portland:~/Kernel# cat /proc/acpi/ibm/fan
status: enabled
speed: 3387
level: auto

However it fails to drop back to its normal speed once the temperature has
dropped back to it's pre-boot temperature.

r...@portland:~/Kernel# acpi -V
 Battery 0: Discharging, 58%, 04:16:44 remaining
Battery 0: design capacity 84240 mAh, last full capacity 84390 mAh = 100%

 Thermal 1: ok, 36.0 degrees C
 Cooling 0: LCD 9 of 15
 Cooling 1: Processor 0 of 10
 Cooling 2: Processor 0 of 10

Although the fan is reasonably quiet I assume it would use more battery to spin
the fan at the higher speed.

r...@portland:~/Kernel# cat /proc/acpi/ibm/thermal

The thinkpad is also pretty thin and doesn't feel at all hot anywhere on any
surface.

[Bug 380293] Re: Ienovo X200 power consumption - power top

2009-05-31 Thread Andrew Mason
doesn't the lenovo X300 have the ULV chip though ?
I am trying to reduce the chances that unrelated information gets posted and
the bug report becomes useless (like so many other bug reports on LP ) if the
X300 is really similar enough hardware wise that the issues are the same, if
this issue gets addressed then the changes should also work for the X300. I
guess there is enough X200 users at the moment that if any testing or
information is required that someone will be able to do it. That doesn't
exclude X300 owners from trying out the solutions to see if they work. If you
find that it doesn't work for X300's and it does for X200 users then it's
probably worth adding a separate bug report for the X300 .

2009-06-02 Thread Andrew Mason
Yep, I talked to Matthew and it should definitely be in 2.6.30-rc7 in
karmic which is the kernel that I tested with. So either it's not the
issue which was addressed with that patch or the patch has not
completely resolved the issue.

[Bug 349568] Re: [iGM45] Jaunty / Compiz slow and tearing on GMA 4500MHD

2009-04-04 Thread Andrew Mason
Its not just with composite enabled. Kwin with both compositing enabled
and disabled on this chipset seem to have the same behaviour. Powertop
also shows an increased number of wakeups.

I don't think this issue is fixed just by enabling UXA. I have enabled
uxa on an intel X4500 card ( Lenovo thinkpad X200) and i am stil getting
artifacts. Attached is a screen shot.

[Bug 342923] Re: (Needs UXA) Kubuntu Jaunty Intel 945 GM - Poor sluggish graphics performance in Kate text, etc.

Possibly related bug reports:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/373245

This occurs with every kernel and patch up to 2.6.30-rc7, however
2.6.30-rc7 is by far and away the best performing in terms of power
usage .

This was done with the latest mainline kernel, since you always ask for
this to be tested anyway. The previous kernels also have this behaviour.

[Bug 380303] [NEW] thinkpad-acpi X200 Thinkpad fan fails to spin down .

2009-05-25 Thread Andrew Mason
Public bug reported:

The fan on my thinkpad acpi begins in 'level 1' mode on boot or shortly
after.

r...@portland:~/Kernel# cat /proc/acpi/ibm/fan
status: enabled
speed: 1875
level: 1
commands: level ( is 0-7, auto, disengaged, full-speed)
commands: enable, disable
commands: watchdog ( is 0 (off), 1-120 (seconds))

After some usage it climbs to

r...@portland:~/Kernel# cat /proc/acpi/ibm/fan
status: enabled
speed: 3387
level: auto

However it fails to drop back to its normal speed once the temperature has
dropped back to it's pre-boot temperature.

r...@portland:~/Kernel# acpi -V
 Battery 0: Discharging, 58%, 04:16:44 remaining
Battery 0: design capacity 84240 mAh, last full capacity 84390 mAh = 100%
  AC Adapter 0: off-line
 Thermal 0: ok, 33.0 degrees C

[Bug 373245] Re: wakeups : hrtimer_start_range_ns (tick_sched_timer)

2009-06-02 Thread Andrew Mason
Yep, I talked to Matthew and it should definitely be in 2.6.30-rc7 in
karmic which is the kernel that I tested with. So either it's not the
issue which was addressed with that patch or the patch has not
completely resolved the issue.

[Bug 342923] Re: (Needs UXA) Kubuntu Jaunty Intel 945 GM - Poor sluggish graphics performance in Kate text, etc.

2009-04-16 Thread Andrew Mason
Hi have the 'magic' line, to enable UXA. It does make a significant
difference but the performance is still sluggish. In comparison at least
to Fedora 11 Beta which is afaik using X server 1.6. I am trying to
work out the differences at the moment. Will write more when I have some
answers.

@Jithin Emmanuel It's only broken for those who cannot use UXA and who
are experiencing this bug.

@naught101 the RC will probably not be backported. There is nothing to
stop you from compiling it yourself on your machine. It's fairly easy to
do but obviously takes a while.

[Bug 380303] [NEW] thinkpad-acpi X200 Thinkpad fan fails to spin down .

2009-05-25 Thread Andrew Mason
Public bug reported:

The fan on my thinkpad acpi begins in 'level 1' mode on boot or shortly
after.

r...@portland:~/Kernel# cat /proc/acpi/ibm/fan
status: enabled
speed: 1875
level: 1
commands: level ( is 0-7, auto, disengaged, full-speed)
commands: enable, disable
commands: watchdog ( is 0 (off), 1-120 (seconds))

After some usage it climbs to

r...@portland:~/Kernel# cat /proc/acpi/ibm/fan
status: enabled
speed: 3387
level: auto

However it fails to drop back to its normal speed once the temperature has
dropped back to it's pre-boot temperature.

r...@portland:~/Kernel# acpi -V
 Battery 0: Discharging, 58%, 04:16:44 remaining
Battery 0: design capacity 84240 mAh, last full capacity 84390 mAh = 100%

 Thermal 1: ok, 36.0 degrees C
 Cooling 0: LCD 9 of 15
 Cooling 1: Processor 0 of 10
 Cooling 2: Processor 0 of 10

Although the fan is reasonably quiet I assume it would use more battery to spin
the fan at the higher speed.

r...@portland:~/Kernel# cat /proc/acpi/ibm/thermal

The thinkpad is also pretty thin and doesn't feel at all hot anywhere on any
surface.

[Bug 380293] Re: Ienovo X200 power consumption - power top

2009-05-31 Thread Andrew Mason
doesn't the lenovo X300 have the ULV chip though ?
I am trying to reduce the chances that unrelated information gets posted and
the bug report becomes useless (like so many other bug reports on LP ) if the
X300 is really similar enough hardware wise that the issues are the same, if
this issue gets addressed then the changes should also work for the X300. I
guess there is enough X200 users at the moment that if any testing or
information is required that someone will be able to do it. That doesn't
exclude X300 owners from trying out the solutions to see if they work. If you
find that it doesn't work for X300's and it does for X200 users then it's
probably worth adding a separate bug report for the X300 .

[Bug 373245] Re: wakeups : hrtimer_start_range_ns (tick_sched_timer)

2009-06-01 Thread Andrew Mason
I did see this and was under the impression this was merged by Linus in
2.6.30-rc7. Is this not the case ? Should I try to apply this patch
manually ?

Many thanks
Andrew

[Bug 373245] Re: wakeups : hrtimer_start_range_ns (tick_sched_timer)

2009-06-02 Thread Andrew Mason
Yep, I talked to Matthew and it should definitely be in 2.6.30-rc7 in
karmic which is the kernel that I tested with. So either it's not the
issue which was addressed with that patch or the patch has not
completely resolved the issue.

2009-06-02 Thread Andrew Mason
Sorry my mistake , it's not the kernel that I filed the report with,
however it _is_ still present in 2.6.30-rc7.
