[Bug 1779571] [NEW] thunar: no thumbnails when gphoto2 mounts camera to default location

2018-07-01 Thread Andy Bovett
Public bug reported:

If a camera or phone which uses PTP is plugged in to a Xubuntu 18.04
system, then mounted and browsed via Thunar, no thumbnails are visible
when browsing the default address, e.g. gphoto2://[usb:001,015]/

This is true even though thumbnails are enabled, and work correctly for
MTP devices.

However, if the GVFS mount point is browsed (i.e.
/run/user/1000/gvfs/gphoto2:host= where  is device-specific),
thumbnails are visible.

[Bug 1509805] Re: right click drag&drop menu's missing

2015-11-13 Thread Andy Bovett
I have found a work-around for this bug. Instead of right clicking and dragging
on the icon or file name, right click and drag on the size or file type (i.e.
in one of the other columns) .
Not a fix, but does make it usable.

[Bug 798445] Re: can't discern between two files or folder with identical names

2014-04-19 Thread Andy Bovett
I have just upgraded to Trusty and this problem still doesn't seem to
have been fixed, or even assigned to someone. I'm amazed it's not
getting more attention - does anyone actually use the "file" lense, or
do most people really not have files with the same names in different
folders? For me it renders what could be a useful and powerful feature
of the interface completely useless (this is not hype - I cannot use it
unless I am sure it's finding the master copy of a file and not a
backup).

DESCRIPTION

1. Draw two shapes (such as rectangles) which are offset diagonally and
join them with a connector, then drag the centre segment of the
connector sideways to "skew" it - see the upper illustration in the
attached file "lo_skew_bug.png".

2. Save and close the file.

3. Re-open the file. The "skew" of the connector will be lost and the
image will look like the lower illustration in the attached file.

This is a regression from previous versions of LibreOffice. It appears
that the "skew" is lost on loading the file, as the skew is still
present if opening the file saved at step 2 above with OpenOffice Draw.

This problem also affects drawings embedded in Writer documents, which
exacerbates the effect as it can result in complex block diagrams being
corrupted without the user noticing if they are not on a page the user
is working on when the open and save the document.

[Bug 1091464] Re: Unable to chainload Windows 8 with Secure Boot enabled

2013-10-20 Thread Andy Bovett
I have a Dell Inspiron 15R (Ivy Bridge Core i5) and I have the same
problem. I'm currently running Ubuntu 13.10 (64 bit) and Windows 8.1.
Both will boot with Secure boot disabled. With Secure Boot enabled, I
can boot Ubuntu from the Grub2 menu, but not Windows (same type of error
as the first post in this thread). Windows will, however boot if I go
into the UEFI menu and boot it from there

If I can provide any further info to help on this bug, please let me
know.

[Bug 798445] Re: can't discern between two files or folder with identical names

2013-10-02 Thread Andy Bovett
Still no action on this? I just tried the Saucy beta 2 and it's not been
fixed. I was really hoping it would get addressed soon - it renders the
"files" lense pretty much useless to me. Given more time and knowledge
I'd try to address it myself, but as it is all I can offer is to help
with testing and bug reports.

[Bug 1203390] [NEW] File lense preview dows not show path

2013-07-20 Thread Andy Bovett
Public bug reported:

If several files with the same name exist, the dash file lense has no
reliable way to distinguish between them. I would suggest that the
preview pane should include the path to the file. This is particularly
important if (for example) there is a live and an archived copy of the
same file - the user can accidentally end up editing the archived
version instead of the current one.

[Bug 798445] Re: can't discern between two files or folder with identical names

2013-05-19 Thread Andy Bovett
Is this bug still being looked at? I see no activity since October 2012.
For me it makes the dash search pretty much unusable for files - when it
finds a file or folder I have no idea whether it's the one I want or a
copy or backup. Even when it only finds one item, unless I am _certain_
that I don't have another file with the same name (which is asking a lot
with the 1000's of files I have) I can't trust that it's found the
correct one. I was hoping it would be fixed for Raring but I see no
activity here.

[Bug 962369] Re: Cannot set Device name (hostname) under Details section in System Settings on 12.04

2012-04-29 Thread Andy Bovett
I'd also like to see this fixed. It is occasionally required, and is one
of the issues that makes Ubuntu seem less complete and mature. I assume
that the only way to do it at the moment is to edit /etc/hostname and
/etc/hosts. Anyone know otherwise? Also, I've seen rumours of minor
issues when this is done (can't remember exactly but someone said they
saw theold hostname hanging about somewhere). Anyone aware of anything
else which needs changing?

[Bug 942462] Re: cdromupgrade shoud check for an available network connection

2012-04-28 Thread Andy Bovett
I have a related problem - trying to do an offline upgrade (with or
without the network connected) does't work. I run cdromupgrade and
choose not to download updates from the Internet but it appears to still
pull the entire upgdare from the network (the CD drive is inactive).
Disconnecting the network lead before starting causes errors that
itcan't access the Ubuntu domains.

[Bug 496840] Re: Failure to set permissions on Samba share via CIFS

2010-01-29 Thread Andy Bovett
I believe I'm getting the same bug. It only occurs when unix extensions
are enabled on the Samba server and client. Server is Debian Lenny.
client is Ubuntu Karmic. Some examples:

This works OK:

$ touch x
$ cp x /mnt/SOL/general/

This gives an error:

$ touch x
$ mv x /mnt/SOL/general/
mv: preserving permissions for `/mnt/SOL/general/x': Permission denied

And sure enough the move works but the permissions are different:

$ ls -l x
-rw-rw-r-- 1 andrew andrew 0 2010-01-30 00:17 x
$ ls -l /mnt/SOL/general/x
-rwx-w 1 andrew andrew 0 2010-01-30 00:17 /mnt/SOL/general/x*

However this works:

$ chmod 664 /mnt/SOL/general/x
$ ls -l /mnt/SOL/general/x
-rw-rw-r-- 1 andrew andrew 0 2010-01-30 00:17 /mnt/SOL/general/x

This also gives an error:

$ touch x
$ cp -p x /mnt/SOL/general/
cp: preserving permissions for `/mnt/SOL/general/x': Permission denied

Here's my server smb.conf (cleaned up with comments and printer definitions
removed)

[global]

[general]
comment = General files
path = /media/data/general
valid users = @fullaccess
force group = fullaccess
create mask = 0770
directory mask = 0771

And here's my mount line from fstab on the client:

//SOL/general /mnt/SOL/general cifs
credentials=/root/.smbcredentials,uid=andrew,gid=andrew,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777
0 0

(I'm aware that file_mode and dir_mode don't apply when unix extensions
are enabled but I have them there for when they are not.)

This bug is causing me a lot of hassle so if any help/workarounds can be
suggested I'd be grateful.

An update to my previous comment - changing the colour model setting in

[Bug 199946] [NEW] hardy alpha 6: Dual screen fails with GeForce 7600GS and nv driver

2008-03-08 Thread Andy Bovett
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: displayconfig-gtk

Hardy alpha 6 installed on a Core 2 Duo system with an Nvidia GeForce
7600GS graphics card. Primary monitor is a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 920
(CRT). I've tried two secondary monitors, both LCDs - a Videoseven 17
inch (1280x1024) and an unbadged 15 inch (1024x768). In both cases
attempts to set up the secondary monitor via displayconfig-gtk have
failed.

displayconfig-gtk is at version 0.3.7

Steps to reproduce:

At start the primary monitor is working correctly, The secondary monitor
indicates it's input is out of range and nothing is displayed.

Run displayconfig-gtk
- Screen 1 is listed correctly. Screen 2 is disabled.
Click on screen 2.
Set monitor to LCD 1024x768
- note that "detect" button in monitor selection dialogue is greyed out.
Set resolution to 1024x768 at 60 Hz
Click "Secondary screen" radio button
- Extend default screen to the right is already selected so leave it
Click on Test
- Primary screen blanks momentarily.
- Secondary screen blacks out (backlight goes off then on) and then returns to
indicating input is out of range.
- Then get message as follows:

  Configuration test failed
  Please verify the selected devices and configuration

If displayconfig-gtk is run from a console via sudo the following text is
printed:
--- START QUOTE---
~$ sudo displayconfig-gtk
on_button_test_config_clicked()
xauth: creating new authority file /tmp/dcg-R8odej6090/xauthority
Got pid 6107
(0, 0)
checkpoint 1
None
False
Sorry, this configuration video card driver
and monitor doesn't appear to work:

Messages from the X server:
Fatal server error:

--- END QUOTE ---

Note - there is just a blank line after the line "Fatal server error:"

At no point is anything displayed on the secondary screen except its own
message that the input signal is out of range. No combination of
resolution and refresh frequencies tried alters this.

[Bug 105536] Re: When replying to an email the field to: is blank

2007-12-10 Thread Andy Bovett
I've just started seeing a similar bug on Gutsy - not sure if it's the
same one. It only happens with e-mails from a certain person (who, as it
happens, runs Thunderbird on Windows). If I hit "Reply", I get my own
address in the To box instead of hers. I have looked at the message
headers and can't see anything obviously wrong. I've attached a sample
of the headers from one of the problem messages.

[Bug 149300] Re: incomplete or missing search results shown

I'm getting this problem also in the release version of Gutsy. I'm
searching for a term I know is present in current files, and the summary

Not sure why this search term triggers it - for what it's worth,
searching for "pluto" shows the problem, whilst searching for "jupiter"
or "titan" does not.

I've experienced this problem as well - also with an nVidia graphics
card. Anyone got a solution?

[Bug 107451] Re: [kde] cdrom uprade fails

2007-04-21 Thread Andy Bovett
Sorry if I'm being thick here, but is it possible to use this patch with
the existing CD to allow the upgrade to proceed? I'd like to be able to
use the CD I downloaded but I'm not sure how to go about it.

[Bug 90795] Re: Unmount of remote CIFS shares fails with timeout on system shutdown

2007-03-18 Thread Andy Bovett
I can confirm this bug. I've experienced it on a couple of systems - one
running Feisty and one running Dapper. Both of these have network-
manager installed. Several other systems, running Edgy, and _without_
network-manager installed, don't exhibit this problem.

The result (for me) is that the system fails to complete shutdown and I
have to power off or reset manually.

Unlike the bug reporter I'm not mounting the CIFS shares on system
startup - they are mounted manually - so that's not part of the problem.

I don't currently have a system running Edgy _with_ network-manager, but
if I do have reason to set one up I'll report what I find.

My laptop (Dell SmartStep 250N) is prone to overheating with prolonged
high CPU use. This bug is enough to force a thermal shutdown at times -
VERY inconvenient. Surely it should be given a higher priority?

[Bug 27846] Re: [dapper] Screen blanks when mouse or keyboard events occur.

2007-02-10 Thread Andy Bovett
Just tried that PC again. Yes - the problem still happens - but only
with Xine. Totem is OK, and it doesn't happen otherwise, which is why I
hadn't noticed recently - I don't often use multimedia on that PC. I do
have Feisty installed on it, as well as Dapper (different partition) so
I'll try Xine on that when I have a moment and report back.

As it only now affects Xine it's not as big an issue as when I reported
it - back then it was constant and made the PC unusable.

[Bug 57454] Re: Firefox segfaults every time it is launched

2007-01-31 Thread Andy Bovett
Sorry about the lack of response. This e-mail address now gets so much
spam I missed your previous message.

I haven't had access to that PC for a while so can't confirm that the
problem still exists. I agree that you should close the bug - I'll re-
open or re-submit if necessary. Sorry for the inconvenience. I'll try to
switch to a different e-mail address so I don't miss messages again.

[Bug 47649] Re: Landscape PDF printed as portrait (and truncated)

I can also confirm this bug, with a PDF sent to me from an Apple Mac
user. Tags in the PDF are:

Creator: AppleWorks
Producer: Mac OS X 10.3.9 Quartz PDFContext
Format: PDF v 1.3

Wold really like this one fixed - or at least a workaround - as it's
causing me some problems. Any suggestions?

[Bug 72949] CD ripping from Konqueror broken in Edgy

2006-11-22 Thread Andy Bovett
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: konqueror

If an audio CD is inserted and then the CD opened in Konqueror from
(say) the desktop icon, a blank window is displayed instead of the audio
tracks for ripping. The path being opened is /media/cdrom rather than
audiocd:/ or media:/hdc which when manually entered result in the
correct behavior.

[Bug 57454] Firefox segfaults every time it is launched

2006-08-23 Thread Andy Bovett
Public bug reported:

Firefox used to work on this machine but now segfaults every time I
launch it. Not sure exactly when the problem started happening as this
is not my day-to-day machine. This appears to differ from the previous
firefox bugs reported as this happens as soon as I launch firefox - it
never gets as far as creating the GUI window.

I'm Running Ubuntu 6.06LTS with all packages up to date (apt-get dist-
upgrade) as of 23rd August 2006, on a Compaq Armada 1750 laptop. Firefox
package version is 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.5-0ubuntu6.06.1.

I have tried:

- Rebooting
- Removing ~/.mozilla
- Logging in as a different user
- Reinstalling firefox via apt
- Removing (with --purge) and then reinstalling firefox

Nothing makes any difference.

I have followed the instructions on the wiki for producing a backtrace
with gdb and a memcheck report with valgrind, and will attach the logs
to this post.

[Bug 27852] Re: I/O errors when connecting SD (secure digital) flash cards

2006-06-24 Thread Andy Bovett
I'm now finding that as long as I partition and format my cards on the
PC before using them in the camera, it seems to be OK. I have had to use
fdisk as cfdisk complains that the partition table is invalid and
aborts, so it's slightly non-trivial, but I have a solution in my case.
It may be that my camera is formatting the cards incorrectly in the
first place - I can't remember the exact error but it was something like
a partition ending beyond the physical end of the "disk" or something
like that.

So I'm happy to close this bug now unless others are still having
problems. With regards to Stefan's comment, his symptoms don't match
mine so I don't think this is a duplicate.
