I've come to the conclusion that the sensible solution is to buy a new
graphics card.

For those with laptops I accept that that is not much help.

But it does not appear to me that anyone is actively working to fix this
problem.

To my way of thinking, the critical thing is not that 3D apps don't work
- it's that the machine hangs.  Can I stop that happening somehow?

It appears that I +may+ have a driver that +may+ help but I'm afraid I
don't know how to tell what driver I'm currently using...

I've just installed Ubuntu 6.06 on a new PC based around the Gigabyte
GA-k8VM800M motherboard.   This has a built-in graphic card which the
manual describes as "VIA K8M800".

Whenever I try to run a "3D" app in full-screen mode the entire machine
hangs completely.  (So it looks like maybe a MESA problem?)  The way
forward is to press the reset button.

In an ideal world, of course, I should not be the one to have to make
the distinction.  ::grin::

In fact, this bug was caused by me; on install, I wouldn't let ubuntu
format my /home partition, and the problem was caused by a permissions
error.

I can never keep all those different Xorg log files straight - I'm an
old UNIX fogey at heart.

Many thanks; AFAIC the issue is closed.  And next time I'll remember
about support requests.

I did think I saw something odd when I booted, somthing like "hardware
drivers failed".  So heres /var/log/messages for a start.

Installation went okay (this time).

However, when I log in I get a dark brown screen for two minutes, then
the spinner-thing (Ubuntu's "hourglass"), the screen goes black and then
dark brown again ... and then I'm returned to the login screen.

I can log in in "text mode" if I do ctrl-alt-F1, and I can rsync to the
box I'm typing on now, so I'm poised ready to send you folks any
information you might need; I'm afraid I don't know what to send,
though.
