[Bug 2078362] Re: Zim crashes when launched (after upgrade to noble)

2024-09-08 Thread Anton¡o Sch¡fano
After some investigations, it turns out that the problem appears if one selects
the "Redglass" or "Handhelds" cursors in gnome-tweaks -> Appearance -> Cursor.
Any other choice I tried seem to work, though.

[Bug 747707] Re: kswapd0 freaks out if rsync runs on an USB disk

2011-05-27 Thread Anton¡o Sch¡fano
I also have a similar problem with an HP dm1 laptop and kernel
2.6.38-9-generic. For me the problem is triggered by rsync, especially when
copy very large files (greater than the laptop physical memory). The system
eventually hangs in my case.
However, I tried the -server kernel, and the problem disappeared. Not the best
option for a laptop, but at least it doesn't hang...

[Bug 755066] Re: heavy i/o on sandybridge systems with small memory footprints causes system hangs

2011-05-08 Thread Anton¡o Sch¡fano
Hello,

I am experiencing a very similar problem with my laptop (AMD fusion based, HP
Pavilion dm1-3101 - 4GB RAM, CPU AMD E350 dual core), a fresh Natty
installation with updates and kernel 2.6.38-9-generic amd64.
When trying to rsync a few GB directories from my main PC to the laptop, after
a while (random) the laptop hangs. Nothing is displayed on screen and I cannot
find any trace in the logs.

After some hours (sic!) spent on this problem, I have noticed that:
- The system hangs when free memory gets low (monitored with 'top' on a
terminal).
- As free memory decreases, kswapd0 starts consuming more and more cpu time,
till it reaches 60%-80%. Swap is not used however, and I was able to reproduce
the hang even with swap off.
- As a workaround, I eventually found that dropping the disk caches when
kswapd0 starts misbehaving (echo 1 >/proc/sys/vm/drop_caches) prevents the
kernel from freezing and, thanks to that, I could finally complete the rsync.

Do you think this is the same problem, or should I open a new bug?

Hi Laysan,

That is exactly what I did - and with the same result ;)
I agree with you, someone should re-allow libsensors support in.
BTW I just tried on my eeepc: thanks to libsensors, gkrellm was able
to display my laptop's fan speed.
Probably other hardware would benefit too...

[Bug 688944] [NEW] Gkrellm without libsensors is incompatible with asus_atk0110

2010-12-11 Thread Anton¡o Sch¡fano
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gkrellm

Gkrellm is compiled without libsensors since version 2.2.10-1, according to the
changelog "for safety reasons".
However, this breaks compatibility with - at least - recent Asus motherboards,
where the asus_atk0110 kernel module is the best option to retrieve sensors
values.
I tried to recompile gkrellm with libsensors and now it detects all the sensors
of my Asus Crosshair motherboard, without side effects.

I am using Ubuntu Maverick (x86_64), but I guess it is the same in all
architectures/versions since 2007.

[Bug 430876] Re: /dev/dri devices are absent after recent update (intel card)

2009-10-05 Thread Anton¡o Sch¡fano
When the problem shows up, in my dmesg there is an error in the initialization
of the agpgart module, in function drm_fill_in_dev.
In this case the console does not switch to color framebuffer mode and the dri
entries in /dev are not created.

[Bug 430876] Re: /dev/dri devices are absent after recent update (intel card)

2009-10-05 Thread Anton¡o Sch¡fano
I have the same problem on my EEEPC 1000HD.
I experienced the following boot sequence:
- Good boot
- Bad boot (after no install, no config changes)
- Bad boot (after a power-off)
- Good boot (after boot to Windows XP + reboot)
I think this points to some hardware initialization issue (BIOS or kernel?)

[Bug 418514] Re: linux-image-2.6.31-7.27-generic fails to boot lvm

2009-08-25 Thread Anton¡o Sch¡fano
I don't know if it is the same bug, but my netbook (eeepc1000HD), with
LUKS swap and home, fails to boot the kernel from package linux-
image-2.6.31-7-generic ; it hangs on the following command:

cryptsetup -x aes-cbc-essiv:sha256 -s 256 -h sha256 --key-
file=/dev/urandom create cryptoswap /dev/sda8

The last displayed message is:

modprobe: FATAL: Error inserting padlock_sha (...): No such device

This last message is displayed also by the (working) kernel
2.6.31-6-generic.

With the -13 kernel, the performance is poor for every user, root included.
Kernel -11 lp349314apw5 behaves like the -14: slow performance, except
if run as root.

[Bug 349314] Re: Slow performance and tiling issues on i915

2009-07-21 Thread Anton¡o Sch¡fano
Regarding the supertux2 problem, I think the permissions are ok (see
below), as my user is in the group video and the system sets the ACL
correctly. Note that the device is /dev/dri/card0 though (not video0).

uid=1000(antadm) gid=1000(antadm)
groups=4(adm),20(dialout),24(cdrom),29(audio),30(dip),44(video),46(plugdev),104(fuse),106(lpadmin),112(netdev),115
(pulse-access),116(pulse-
rt),121(admin),122(sambashare),1000(antadm),1001(eeeuser)

ant...@kicker:~$ getfacl /dev/dri/card0
getfacl: Removing leading '/' from absolute path names
# file: dev/dri/card0
# owner: root
# group: video
user::rw-
user:antadm:rw-
group::rw-
mask::rw-

[Bug 349314] Re: Slow performance and tiling issues on i915

2009-07-19 Thread Anton¡o Sch¡fano
The 14-generic kernel seems to work also on mi eeepc 1000 hd, i.e. tiling is
enabled and performance is better.
One strange thing I am investigating: supertux2 is too slow unless run by root.
Any ideas?
