[Bug 665815] Re: firefox oops this is embarrassing

2010-11-29 Thread Antonio Macchi III
I have experienced similar problems on Ubuntu since 9.04 (now on 10.10)
on several different machines, even after clean installs and subsequent
updates+upgrades. The problem is certainly around the interaction of
Firefox online/offline handling, Network Manager, and Gnome session
handling of power, hibernate, suspend.

PS: This is one of the (embarrassing) reasons that prevents us from
deploying Ubuntu Linux on professional environments.

[Bug 479878] Re: Need an option to disable touchpad completely

2010-05-25 Thread Antonio Macchi III
I also believe that improved control of touchpads in laptops/netbooks etc is
necessary.
But NOT disabling the trackpad/touchpad completely! Here are a few reflections
and suggestions:

1) In my opinion the most logigical move is automatic disabling the
touchpad while typing with a user-defined TIME DELAY. If the delay is
long then the disabling is also effective for users that wish a complete
disable, but has the advantage of returning automatically to full
functionality. If the user continues typing the trackpad is simply
disabled during that time plus the delay.

2) This could be extended by the option of disabling the touchpad if and
only if an external pointing device is present.

3) But I dislike permanent disabling of the trackpad since it is
eventually useful for very few but may create many problems for a
majority of users! WARNING: Once you click and confirm the disable
trackpad option, then the user would have no pointing device! This type
of disable all option probably creates problems for users that learn
by actively experimenting with settings.

4) These GUI functions should be integrated into gnome-settings and not
handled by separate packages

5) Automatic installation of relevant packages on laptops etc would be
very good.

[Bug 409086] Re: Disable touchpad while typing: make time configurable via gconf-key

2010-05-24 Thread Antonio Macchi III
I agree that the delay length should be configurable by the user.
In the meanwhile, before the problem is solved, it is good to note that the
present value of half a second delay is too short. A better alternative is a
delay length closer to the default from syndaemon (2 seconds).

[Bug 403303] Re: power manager reports 1% battery even though it is full on Asus Eee PC netbook

2010-05-08 Thread Antonio Macchi III
Can anyone suggest us a workaround?
For instance a script that just manipulates device readings or the /proc ?

This problem prevents normal use of the EEE Netbook with Ubuntu because
shut down seems to occur in an unpredictable way, apparently even when
there are still usable energy levels available.

I believe that the priority should be higher because the computer model
is very popular!

[Bug 511001] Re: [i855] Lucid Freeze shortly after X startup (needs KMS blacklist?)

2010-04-30 Thread Antonio Macchi III
Yes, I confirm that this problem is still present on the final release
of Lucid.

A clean (atlernate) install of the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS fails completely to
boot on machines with Intel 855 etc graphics family. This is a
catastrophe for me since we have several of those systems in the
surroundings and I cannot fall back to previous Ubuntu versions that
lack support for certain hardware. I wish there was a stronger push for
stability and slightly weaker emphasis on cosmetic improvements to boot
screen and 3D graphics.

[Bug 554835] Re: [855GM] GPU hang when an application tries to use XVideo

My test laptop a Sony Vaio VGN-B1XP with Intel 855 graphics crashes
badly with the 10.04 Lucid release candidate kernel 2.6.32-21. The
symptom is only black screen and no activity upon attempt to boot
/start. I get no error logs.

Please assign a reasonably high priority for solving this regression on
the LTS release. There are lots of systems with 855 graphics that may
fail completely upon upgrade.

[Bug 571419] [NEW] Network-manager package should be dependent on usb-modeswitch for allowing full functionality to a wider range of mobile broadband devices

2010-04-28 Thread Antonio Macchi III
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Several mobile broadband devices are dependent on usb-modeswitch, but that
package is NOT installed by default!
It is not easy for non-expert users to correct the problem by installing the
package that specifically addresses this issue. This should be done
automatically!
There are several related bugs, such as #259028. But apparently none of them
describes the need for a dependency. The network-manager should be dependent on
the usb-modeswitch since it is strictly necessary for several modern mobile
broadband USB devices.

For instance mobile broadband modem Huawei E1550 works only after
installation of usb-modeswitch.

[Bug 568779] Re: 10.04 rc livecd boots into black/blank screen (intel 82852/855GM graphic card)

2010-04-26 Thread Antonio Macchi III
Hello,
I am having similar problems and cannot boot with generic kernel 2.6.32-21 on
my test laptop, a Vaio VGN-P1XP with Intel 855 graphics. Ordinary boot fails
with black screen and no activity. Booting on recovery mode succeeds but safe
graphics give scrambled screen and no activity. I could not find exact logs of
the failures but fear problems with graphics.
Earlier generic kernel 2.6.32-19 works OK.

PS: Regarding entry #20 from MilchFlasche, I believe that this cannot be
related to tmpfs, since I have no references to tmpfs in fstab and my
system still fails.

[Bug 566162] [NEW] Boot fails after kernel upgrade to 2.6.32-21generic on Ubuntu Lucid Beta2

2010-04-18 Thread Antonio Macchi III
Public bug reported:

Boot fails completely after kernel upgrade to 2.6.32-21generic, giving
no sign of intelligible activities. No log is recorded nor any console
progress can be shown on boot, only an empty screen.

The system is a Sony Vaio laptop model VGN-B1XP that otherwise works
very well and had a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx Beta 2
alternate 386, that worked nice with kernel 2.6.32-19 from Beta 2.
Earlier test of Beta 1 worked fine up to kernel 2.6.32-20, but also
stopped working after upgrade to the kernel 2.6.32-21 generic.

Hopefully our kernel and distro heroes can solve this serious fault. It threats
to undermine confidence of a LTS-release.
Sorry but I cannot provide other details since there are no logs of those boot
attempts. I could not find a way to file this bug from the menu.

RE: [Bug 492001] Re: Well, this is embarrassing message appears often after shutdown and hibernate

2009-12-07 Thread Antonio Macchi III

Dear Micah,
From the USER PERSPECTIVE it seems to be a problem with Firefox, since it
shows the well embarrassing message almost every time they open the laptops.
That what our test users tell me.
Is there a way to simply hide some of these error states from the user?
Ultimately the main goal for a browser is to browse the web and not get stuck
att error messages! As long as the browser gets stuck at a easily recoverable
error condition, HUMAN USERS will see this as a bug.
Thanks in advance for giving us a suggestion on how to avoid this. Is there a
script to run on shutdown, hibernate, and suspend to avoid this?Best regards,
/Macchi

[Bug 296396] Re: Integrate Lock screen and Login screen functionality

2009-11-25 Thread Antonio Macchi III
The flow around login, logout, screenlock, userswitch, power off etc is very
confusing for less-experienced users.
The flow has to be unified and simplified and also integrated with poweroff,
suspend, and hibernate. Furthermore automatic logout is necessary when running
multi-user and systems for professional applications.

With the present implementation users have to keep track of a lot of buttons,
many different screens, and several states and conditions.
In Karmic this scenario got much worse since the login screen changed to a
completely new format and some states lead to a completely white screen. (type
Esc on the password field and you get a completely white screen)

We really would like to see a solution for these problems in order to be
able to deploy Ubuntu on a small to medium business enterprise IT-
environment.

2009-04-18 Thread Antonio Macchi III
This bug is still around on Jaunty (Beta, but right before release) with
Evolution 2.26.1

Evolution is unusable on netbooks with 800x480 screen resolution since
the minimum size of the main window and dialogues are wider than the
screen. The main problem is the width, but an overall review of the
constraints would be nice.

It would be sad if users of netbooks and devices with small screens are
ignored. As we know many new users in this category are affected.

[Bug 358952] [NEW] NetworkManager Mobile Broadband first-time setup dialog keeps reappearing on login, even after the connection has been configured

2009-04-10 Thread Antonio Macchi III
Public bug reported:

The dialog for the first-time setup of a Mobile Broadband network card
(actually a USB stick) keeps reappearing upon login, even after the

PS: I have also noticed that the location and provider database show errors!
This could be another sympthom of the same cause for the problem.
By the way, yes the reappearing dialogue is annoying and somewhat sinks an

[Bug 358952] Re: NetworkManager Mobile Broadband first-time setup dialog keeps reappearing on login, even after the connection has been configured

2009-04-10 Thread Antonio Macchi III
** Description changed:

The dialog for the first-time setup of a Mobile Broadband network card
(actually a USB stick) keeps reappearing upon login, even after the
- connection has already been configured. I have observer this on a
- netbook with Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty beta.
+ connection has already been configured. I have observed this problem on
+ a freshly reinstalled netbook with Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty beta.

- PS: I have also noticed that the location and provider database show errors!
This could be another sympthom of the same cause for the problem.
- By the way, yes the reappearing dialogue is annoying and somewhat sinks an
otherwise fantastic release. These mobile broadband devices are very common
here in the Nordic countries.
+ PS: I have also noticed that the location and provider database of the mobile

fantastic release of Ubuntu. These mobile broadband devices became very common

[Bug 269329] Re: [MASTER] NM 0.7 lacks bluetooth 3g support

2009-01-17 Thread Antonio Macchi III
I personally believe that the priority for this bug should be higher.

Many users around me see this as a bug. Presently it seems necessary to
deactivate or remove the Network Manager in order to connect to internet
through many modems and mobile phones. Without removing or deactivating
NM, then Firefox and Evolution start in off-line mode even if ppp
connections are active - since NM reports an erroneously condition
through dbus.

A transitional solution would be smoother integration with the ppp
graphical tools. This is necessary because the demand for mobile
connectivity increases all the time and comprises bluetoot, 3G phones,
modems and other new services.

Could you give us some hints on how to improve NM to integrate som
graphical ppp tweaks?

[Bug 318265] [NEW] Network-Manager-Applet asks for PUK and PIN of only up to 4 digits long while these codes can be up to 8 digits long

2009-01-17 Thread Antonio Macchi III
Public bug reported:

The seriousness of this bug can be discussed. Besides preventing the
device to function, the SIM card will lock up and become unsable after
several unlock attempts (10) with a wrong private unlock key (PUK).

The PIN and PUK keys seem to be entered and handled the same place in the
source code, as far I can see the executable and source the entry field is
limited to 4 digits:

Fragment of code found in applet-device-gsm.c
...
*out_secret_entry = GTK_ENTRY (w);
gtk_entry_set_max_length (GTK_ENTRY (w), 4);
gtk_entry_set_width_chars (GTK_ENTRY (w), 4);
...

I discovered this problem since my mobile broadband pccard Huawei E600
cannot be used with network-manager 0.7 although it otherwise works in
GNU-Linux.

[Bug 286859] Re: [0.7] [3G] PIN secret invalid even though PIN is correct

2009-01-14 Thread Antonio Macchi III
I confirm this on Ubuntu 8.10. N-M keeps asking for PIN and PUK codes
although the SIM is unlocked.

Please give me a hint on how to tweak the ppp and chat scripts used with
N-M?

Thanks,
/AMIII

PS: I am having problems with Network Manager and a Huawei E600 (PCMCIA) for
mobile internet connections through 3G. It is recognized as E620 and the
connection process is stuck at a PIN question for an unlocked SIM card.

Some reference information N-M 0.7~~svn20081018... N-M-Gnome
0.7~~20081020... on the very same system work fine with a Huawei E169.
Furthermore, the E600 works fine on GNU/Linux directly with ppp scripts
or under win.

[Bug 190815] Re: cannot create user when the /home directory already exist

2008-04-20 Thread Antonio Macchi III
I also confirm the problem, that happens to have a high significance for us:
We keep the home directories and the system on different partitions in order to
preserve user data after system maintenance and upgrades.

User data has a much longer life than the present version of the
operating system. Thus in our opinion real world applications require a
mechanism for adding existing users and keeping existing data.

[Bug 144230] [Gutsy Tribe 5] Existing partitions are not detected

2007-09-23 Thread Antonio Macchi III
Public bug reported:

The partitioner fails to detect any existing partitions. The only
alternative on manual partitioning is to erase the whole disk. I could
not proceed the installation and test.

This is a very serious problem for regular users since it erases the
partition table and causes a complete loss of all data on the computer.

REMARKS: This bug might be related to other partitioning problems such
as 138156 or 130124. The problem was experienced while testing Ubuntu
Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 5 alternate install on a Linux-friendly laptop Sony
Vaio VGN-B1XP. This particular computer has been extensively tested with
several Linux distributions and with other releases of Ubuntu without
any issues on partitioning or disk handling. (But I have to confess that
I did not test yet how it feels to erase all data on the computer,
perhaps I may experience this in the future.)

[Bug 85010] Re: Opens in offline mode

2007-06-14 Thread Antonio Macchi III
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 82335 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/82335

I confirm this bug .

Evolution opens in offline mode with an internet connection established
through ppp for a GSM 3rd generation modem (mobile internet).

This can be very SERIOUS FOR BUSINESS USERS because it prevents email
from working as expected. This is relevant for laptops with GSM 3G
mobile intenet, that are becoming common here in Sweden and probably
also elsewhere in Europe. NOT BEING ABLE TO SEND EMAIL IS INDEED VERY
BAD, so the importance level should be increased.

This does not happen through direct cable nor Wi-Fi wireless connections.
(perhaps I should be reporting this on the other bug)

[Bug 72262] Re: Form Wizard in Base does not complete

2007-06-07 Thread Antonio Macchi III
Irritating bug confirmed.

For less experienced users this bug seem to block completely the use of OO
Base, the importance/severity should be higher.
The most common use case for less experienced users is generating a simple
database application with help of the wizards.

I will run to the forum to find a workaround. So far I fear that
installation of the latest stuff from OO.org will break other things.

[Bug 66713] Re: Openoffice 2.0.4 crashes randomly in Edgy

2006-10-24 Thread Antonio Macchi III
I confirm that OpenOffice crashed repeatedly on Edgy.
It scared me, but eventually it worked again efter I purged and reinstalled OO,
removed the user registry on my home catalog and restarted the system. I also
crossed my fingers while starting my favorite office suite but confess that I
did not say a prayer.

In this process I have probably lost my custom spellingcheck
dictionaries i three languages and hope to be able to reinsert them
again in the user registry.

[Bug 43961] Re: Power down after shutdown does not work...

2006-08-21 Thread Antonio Macchi III
I confirm similar problems (no shutdown) for Dapper on three machines
that worked previously with Breezy:

 1) Pentum III, Dapper Server -server kernel
 2) Pentium III, Dapper Desktop after upgrade to -686 kernel
 3) Pentium II, Dapper Laptop -686 kernel

The problem with the server is serious since it may require physical
access to the machine upon system restarts. Clearly not acceptable upon
remote headless server operation. Equaly irritating is to experience
completely drained batteries on a laptop since it did not power off
properly. I really appreciate very much Ubuntu Linux and hope that
finding a solution for this problem gets high priority.

Power off works OK with the 686 kernel on another laptop, my Sony Vaio
VGN B1XP, but suspend and hibernate are less reliable.

I could post data for the five systems upon request but will not include
this info to save space on the launchpad.

[Bug 52017] Re: changing settings (like paper size) have no effect in CUPS

2006-08-14 Thread Antonio Macchi III
I have experienced similar problems with gnome-cups-manager and cups
when printing from clients:

wrong size for testpages (Letter instead of A4) while using the print a
testpage from a client using the gnome-cups-manager.

A similar testpage printed with the cups web-interface has the correct
size. This potential bug is probably only observed in a cups
client/server arrangement where A4 is used as standard. I did not
observe the problem while printing testpages on the same machine (the
server).

For us this bug is of reasonably high importance since wrong page sizes are not
acceptable in a business envinronment. It is visible and gives a bad impression
for new linux users.
I am presently preparing the deployment of packages for small businesses
containing ubuntu desktops and servers.

I would be very thankful for any suggestions that could help us to solve
that problem.

/Macchi

[Bug 49840] Re: Gcompris administration menu not working

2006-07-01 Thread Antonio Macchi III
The Gcompris administration tool does't work for me on fresh Dapper
installs. This is a pity since it reduces the possibility to adapt the
activities according to the age, skills and interests of children.

Is there a time frame for fixing the bug or creating a straightforward
workaround suitable for non technical people?
A friend of mine is a school teacher at an elementary school willing to use
Gcompris on Ubuntu experimentally. This means several dozen of young users
missing the chance to discover and learn Gcompris and Ubuntu.

By the way: The menu entries are filed on Games and unfortunately not
on Education where I believe it would be much more suitable for
Gcompris.
