[Bug 1908469] [NEW] Cannot install .deb packages opened from Firefox

2020-12-16 Thread Aren Cambre
Public bug reported:

Suppose in Firefox you click a link to a .deb package. A dialog named
"Opening [filename].deb" opens. If you select "Open with", then the .deb
file is downloaded, placed in /tmp/mozilla_[username]0/ directory, then
Software Install (as named in the Firefox dialog) is started on that
.deb file.

Next, Software Install loads and fails with "Failed to install file: not
supported".

If on the other hand, in Firefox's "Opening [filename].deb" dialog, if I
select "Save File" instead, the .deb file ends up in the user's
Downloads directory. Software Install works fine with the package there.

I don't want to get too much into solutioning or "why". The main point
of this bug is that I should not get a weird error just because I
selected "Open with" instead of "Save File". This happens with a vanilla
install of Ubuntu, with nothing else installed, so the product isn't
working in an intuitive way.

[Bug 1511106] [NEW] window contents scroll up when mouse wheel rapidly scrolled down

2015-10-28 Thread Aren Cambre
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from 15.04 to 15.10, if I slowly scroll down with the
mouse wheel, the content scrolls down correctly. If I rapidly scroll
down, the window's content scrolls up a few lines in a "rebound" after
the scrolling down is completed. It's enough so that if I start with the
content scrolled all the way up, the usual view when you open a new web
page or document, if I rapidly scroll down with the mouse wheel, the
content scrolls down but then jumps all the way back up.

I could reproduce this in the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, and
LibreOffice Writer.

[Bug 1396227] [NEW] Cannot enter passphrase with 14.10 in VM

2014-11-25 Thread Aren Cambre
Public bug reported:

With 14.10 running on VirtualBox, I cannot enter my passphrase. See the
attached image clipped.png. Nothing happens no matter what I press. I
have to hit reset, then I get a more text-based interface on the 2nd
time around, which I can use. See attachment "text based.png".

This 14.10 is a guest under VirtualBox 4.3.20. This also happened with
4.3.18.

14.04 works fine as a guest in the same VirtualBox environments.
Windows 8.1 x64 is the VirtualBox server.

[Bug 1334679] [NEW] Scrolling in Ubuntu causes garbled screen

2014-06-26 Thread Aren Cambre
Public bug reported:

When I scroll in Chromium, especially when I use the mouse wheel, I
often get a garbled screen. The attached PNG is an example from Drudge
Report, a site with pretty simple HTML. Note how the text is
discontinuous on the left and right sides.

In case it matters, I am running Ubuntu as a guest OS in a VirtualBox

[Bug 1311172] Re: Chromium appears to stay on top of other applications even when it is not

2014-05-15 Thread Aren Cambre
I should update that unchecking "Enable 3D Acceleration" does not
reliably fix. However, running Chromium using "chromium-browser
--disable-gpu" does fix it, albeit making Chromium run noticably slowly.

[Bug 1314743] [NEW] Screensaver activates and asks for password even though I have disabled it

[Bug 1311172] Re: Chromium appears to stay on top of other applications even when it is not

2014-04-24 Thread Aren Cambre
I saw http://askubuntu.com/questions/453475/chromium-display-is-
remanent-since-14-04-upgrade-with-gpu-acceleration-enabled and noticed
how he got better results when using the --disable-gpu option. Indeed,
that appears to make Chromium not stay on top.

I've attached console errors and warnings I get with and without that
switch enabled. You'll see a ton of errors and warnings in the one
without --disable-gpu.

In case it matters, I am running Ubuntu as a VirtualBox guest under
Windows 8.1 x64. I'm on VirtualBox 4.3.10 and am using the current Guest
Additions.

[Bug 1311172] Re: Chromium appears to stay on top of other applications even when it is not

2014-04-23 Thread Aren Cambre
Correction on #4: looks like I can interact with Chromium windows that
aren't on top, but only if I click on an area of the window that isn't
covered up by another browser. Bear with me: For example, suppose I have
three Chromium browser windows open with #1 in the front and #3 in the
back, and each sticks out about 1" past each other on the right. If I
click on the scrollbar of #3, I can interact with it. Technically that
brings #3 to the top even though it's not being drawn that way. #2 is
still visible, but if I click on anything on #2, I am in fact messing
with browser #3 as it's on top in every respect except for being drawn
on top by the UI.

I cannot get browser window #3 to be drawn on top by the UI unless I do
something that causes the window to move or resize.

Another observation: if I have multiple Chromium windows, I cannot
interact with a lower window unless I do something that causes the
window to move or resize. Simply clicking on the window doe snot cause
it to respond to anything, nor does it cause it to rise to the top of
the screen.

[Bug 1311172] Re: Chromium appears to stay on top of other applications even when it is not

2014-04-22 Thread Aren Cambre
This is weird: when Chromium is in front of the lock screen (per #2
above), it's still updating. If I have gmail open, the window keeps
updating with new emails, chats, etc. as they come in, but I cannot
interact with it. This seems like a possible information disclosure
vulnerability as a lock screen is intended to maintain privacy.

[Bug 1311172] [NEW] Chromium appears to stay on top of other applications even when it is not

2014-04-22 Thread Aren Cambre
Public bug reported:

(This may be related to but not the same as 1030060 and 1173234.)

Chromium stays on top of other applications, even when it shouldn't be
drawn on the screen at all.

For example, if I minimize Chromium, it is still drawn as if it's on top
of other applicaitons. Even though I cannot see these other applicaitons
or parts thereof that were behind Chromium, I can interact with them
with the mouse as if they are on top and in focus.

Also, even if Chromium is not minimized, it is still drawn above other
applications even if another application gets the focus due to me
interacting with it.

I can reproduce this on both a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04 and an
install of Xubuntu that started with 12.10 and has successively been
upgraded through every release.

[Bug 1175601] Re: Two Chromium background instances and a browser window open on boot without my permission

2014-03-21 Thread Aren Cambre
That's interesting: clearing the session cache seems to have improved
things. I wonder if there is some odd interaction between the session
cache and Chromium?

After clearing the cache, the Chromium icon in the bar at top,
representing the background process, reappears whenever I reboot, but no
windows are opened. I even opened Chromium to two news sites, rebooted,
and later opened Chromium to Gmail and Facebook, rebooted, and in
neither case did Chromium windows open after I logged in, just the
Chromium icon in the top bar.

If I uncheck Chromium from the Application Autostart tab, it's rechecked
once Chromium restarts.

Is there anything in a stock install of Ubuntu that would cause
applications to re-open if they were opened when Ubunutu was shut down?
I noticed that a session of Terminal Emulator is reopened if it was
running before I logged out or restarted. I wonder if the same process
is causing the double instance of Chromium?

I don't think I have that. Per

I should be able to run fglrxinfo to check on the status of that driver.

[Bug 1243196] [NEW] Chromium tabs have blank titles

2013-10-22 Thread Aren Cambre
Public bug reported:

Chromium's tabs occasionally have blank titles. The attached example shows
blank tab titles for Ubuntu Launchpad, Autotrader, and CNN but properly filled
in tabs for other sites. I can reproduce on these instances:
-fresh install of Ubuntu 13.10
-upgrade of Xubuntu from 13.04 to 13.10

Running Chromium Version 29.0.1547.65 Ubuntu 13.10
(29.0.1547.65-0ubuntu2). Per Aptitude, all components are on their
latest releases.

2013-10-21 Thread Aren Cambre
Just did a clean install of Ubuntu 13.10. First thing I did was install
VirtualBox Guest Extensions, then I installed Chromium. Same problem:
the browser appears to stop responding because whatever is in the
browser window gets stuck in time and then occupies the top visibility
above all over apps. So if I try to move another app in front of
Chromium, I still see the Chromium content area that's stuck from
several minutes ago.

[Bug 1185414] [NEW] Chromium overrides changes to its Application Autostart setting

2013-05-29 Thread Aren Cambre
Public bug reported:

Per a discovery I made while working on 1176903, Chromium overrides
settings I make in Session and Startup > Application Autostart.

For example, suppose Chromium is completely closed, not even showing an
icon in the top bar for its background process. If I go to Session and
Startup > Application Autostart and uncheck Chromium, close that window,
start Chromium, then go back to Session and Startup > Application
Autostart, Chromium is rechecked.

Expected behavior: Chromium does not override manual changes to Session

2013-05-29 Thread Aren Cambre
"you can delete that from the list of startup applications, although I don't
think that will solve your problem"
OK, I went to Session and Startup > Application Autostart, unchecked Chromium,
and rebooted. It still starts. In fact, when I go back to Session and Startup,
Chromium is once again checked. Weirdly, if I uncheck it, close Session and
Startup, then go back to it, it remains unchecked. However, when I reboot, it
gets rechecked.

"Is it going to a particular site?"
No, just going to a default startup default page that shows my "Most visited"
sites.

"You might also want to try deleting everything in ~/.cache/sessions/"
Closed Chromium completely by right-clicking on the top bar icon and selecting
Exit. Deleted everything from ~/.cache/sessions/. Started Chromium again.
Closed it. ~/.cache/sessions/ remains empty. Went back to Session and Startup
and unchecked Chromium again. Rebooted. THIS TIME IT'S DIFFERENT! Chromium did
NOT come back up after reboot, and the checkbox stayed unchecked.

AHA, but I don't think it's related to deleting everything in
~/.cache/sessions/: I closed Session and Startup, loaded Chromium again,
and went back to Session and Startup. The Chromium box is re-checked. So
looks like something in the Chromium background process is overriding
whatever I put here. I do think that is a separate bug. Again, the
problem here is that a Chromium _window_ is opening on startup.

Yes, it is, but this is supposedly only for the background process as it
just runs /usr/bin/chromium-browser --no-startup-window.

I did not manually configure this, nor did I ever explicitly authorized
this, although I think it could be reasonable for the background process
to autostart.

[Bug 1176903] [NEW] Chromium browser window opens on startup even though I never configured this

2013-05-06 Thread Aren Cambre
Public bug reported:

When I start Xubuntu 13.04, a Chromium window opens after I log in to my
session. I have never configured Chromium to open a browser window
automatically. This happened even back with 12.10, before I upgraded the
instance to 13.04.

Note that this is not the same as #1175601. With the other bug report,
the problem is two background instances of Chromium are running at the
same time. With this report, the problem is not the background instances
but that the browser window opens without me having configured it to do
so. What should happen is, by default, the Chromium browser window does
not open until I manually open it.

I also have a 13.04 Xubuntu instance that I built from scratch. It also
has chromium-browser installed, same version as on the machine with this
problem. Not only does it not show a Chromium background process in the
menu bar on the top right, running "ps xfwww" does not show any evidence
of a Chromium background process running, so I am seeing inconsistent
behaviors here. (Not sure if that informs this bug; I'd be happy to open
a different bug report if appropriate.)

[Bug 1175601] [NEW] Two Chromium background instances and a browser window open on boot without my permission

2013-05-02 Thread Aren Cambre
Public bug reported:

When I log into my user session (type in my password on the login prompt
after boot), Chromium auto-starts, and two instances of its background
process automatically open: per the attached image, two Chromium icons
appear in the top bar. Also, an instance of the browser appears in the
middle of the screen.

When this happens, I get an inconsistent browsing experince in Chromium,
where it is randomly unable to connect to web sites or download
components referenced by web pages (e.g., CSS files, JS files, etc.).

I can fix by closing the browser and also both the background sessions,
then restarting Chromium.

I have never configured Chromium to start up when I log into my session.
This has happened without my explicit permission or consent.

If I go to Session and Startup's Application Autostart tab, Chromium
appears in the list and is checked. I did not configure this.

Expected behavior: No part of Chromium opens at all, not even a
background process, until I launch the browser for the first time.

I am using a copy of Xubuntu 13.04 that was upgraded from Xubuntu 12.10.
This problem was happening for several weeks back with Xubuntu 12.10,
too.

[Bug 1173234] Re: Chromium's content doesn't respect z order, obscuring everything else

2013-04-30 Thread Aren Cambre
Curiously, I just upgraded my workhorse Xubuntu VM from 12.10 to 13.04,
and that one does not have this z-order problem with Chromium. So far, I
can only reproduce on new instances.

Also, I should have stated this earlier, but in addition to Chromium, I
also installed the VirtualBox Guest Additions using VirtualBox's
included ISO. I am running VirtualBox 4.2.12, the latest release as of
today.

[Bug 1173234] Re: Chromium's content doesn't respect z order, obscuring everything else

2013-04-26 Thread Aren Cambre
The attached image shows what happens after the password screen displays
if it has been idle too long: the Chromium window still stays active and
on top, albeit unresponsive. While the Chrome Web Store tab is selected,
Chromium is showing the contents of the background tab named Extensions
(opened to chrome://extensions).

Chromium's connection with reality is so bad that even if you flip
between the tabs, it won't redraw the Chrome Web Store tab. However, if
I hover over the tab, I can see the mouse cursor change to the hand
pointer when I am over where a clickable thing would be, and the URL
does change as I click on things. This is different than what was
reported earlier, where it would draw correctly but not respond to
clicks.

This is still going on with Ubuntu 13.04 and Chromium Version
25.0.1364.160 Ubuntu 13.04 (25.0.1364.160-0ubuntu3). See the attached
screen shot. Notice how gedit is above Chromium in z-order, but
Chromium's content displays over gedit.

Additionally, no mouse or keyboard input is accepted on this window with
a bad z-order.

[Bug 1030060] [NEW] Chromium elevates background to top z-order, obscuring Chromium and all other windows

2012-07-27 Thread Aren Cambre
Public bug reported:

When I visit certain sites, especially LifeHacker (e.g.,
http://lifehacker.com/5929481/when-it-comes-to-exercise-inefficiency-
may-be-key), the content area does not show the site. Instead, the
content area shows the desktop background image, and it puts that part
of the background over all other windows. If I have another program open
and move it over Chromium's content area, that program also gets
obscured.

By "content area", I mean the part where the page content actually
displays, basically everything below the address bar.

I am running Ubuntu inside Oracle VM VirtualBox 4.1.18 on a Windows 7
x64 host.

If I can, I'll attach an image demonstrating this problem.

[Bug 923823] [NEW] Add "Open file location" to right-click menu in file search dialog

2012-01-30 Thread Aren Cambre
Public bug reported:

Per #914369, we're just now making it possible to learn the location of
a file that comes up in a search (when you open a **Home Folder** window
and search for a file using the search box at top right).

In the search results, please also add an **Open file location**
selection to the context menu (right-click menu) on each filesystem item
found. This would open the item's parent folder.

E.g., if the search found an item at **/a/b/c/item.txt**, then right-
clicking on its icon and selecting **Open file location** would open a
new window showing the contents of the **/a/b/c/** folder.

[Bug 914369] [NEW] No reliable way to get file path after searching files

2012-01-10 Thread Aren Cambre
Public bug reported:

When I open a Home Folder window and search for a file using the search
box at top right, there is no reliable way to discover the path of the
objects that the searcher found.

I can't see the path no matter what view I select.

I can't right-click and select anything that lets me open the parent
folder of the item. (In Windows 7, it's called "Open file location".)

SOMETIMES I can get the path if I right-click and select Properties, but
if the path is too long, it's truncated, ending with an ellipsis (...).

We need a clear way to get the path of items in case we want to do
something that's not feasible with the options available in the search
results.

2011-12-11 Thread Aren Cambre
Has anyone ever opened a bug report on any app, ever, and it ended up

I'll bet the answer is either 0 or close to 0.

I feel we're stuck on a hypothetical that virtually never happens.

How many laptops really have that? My ancient Lenovo X60 tablet has that
feature, but my much newer HP Envy 14 doesn't.

Even then, how often do people really turn on num lock?

I'm concerned this warning is only for a tiny fraction of users--laptop
users whose laptops still have that feature _and_ who actually use num
lock.

[Bug 877456] [NEW] Who cares about num lock?

2011-10-18 Thread Aren Cambre
Public bug reported:

The gnome screensaver is the only application I have ever used, ever,
that thinks that num lock being on is something I should be warned about
when entering a password.

This seems pointless as people generally do not change num lock during
computer use, or if they do, it's not to the frequency of using caps
lock.

Further, numlock being off, which appears to be the preferred state
because that removes the warning, is an old-school habit, increasingly
unusual.

Please remove this warning. It is warning against the normative state,
and it doesn't provide useful information. It's just screen clutter.

2011-01-13 Thread Aren Cambre
Additional:
1. When this Ubuntu desktop was using DHCP, it was assigned the same DNS
servers as I manually assigned when converting to static IP. (They are our
enterprise's only two official DNS servers.) The vast majority of wired network
clients here use static IPs.
2. Running "nslookup" then typing "server" and pressing enter shows both the
DNS servers that I specified, but if I type a domain name and press enter, I
get this: ";; connection timed out; no servers could be reached"

[Bug 702440] [NEW] Setting static DNS server in Devices - Network Tools has no effect

2011-01-13 Thread Aren Cambre
Public bug reported:

This is on a pretty clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop 64-bit.

Expected behavior: If I use System > Administration > Network Tools to switch
to static IP and static DNS settings, it should "just work."
Reality: System > Administration > Network Tools gets the static IP correct but
never successfully alters DNS settings.

Steps to reproduce:

1. System > Administration > Network Tools
2. In the "Network device" dropdown, select "Ethernet Interface (eth0)", then
click "Configure".
3. On the "Wired" tab, select "Auto eth0", then select "Edit".
4. In the "IPv4 Settings" tab, select "Manual" from the "Method" dropdown.
5. Add a new static IP, netmask, etc.
6. Enter the IP of at least one DNS server.

Now press OK/Apply as necessary to confirm all changes.

At this point, presuming the IP is valid, you cannot get any DNS
resolution. You can access other IPs over the network just fine, but
this change had no effect on DNS.

Strangely, if I check "/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/Auto
eth0", the [ipv4] section does show the DNS server. And the other
settings are in place.

/etc/network/interfaces just has this:
  auto lo
  iface lo inet loopback

/etc/resolv.conf has this:
  # Generated by NetworkManager
nameserver [valid IP of first server, and yes, I can ping it]
nameserver [valid IP of second server, and yes, I can ping it]

So seems like it ought to be correct?

I've had this problem in prior Ubuntu releases, too.

OK, I flattened my VM and tried again from scratch so I could tell you my
steps. Here they are:
1. Install base OS using jeos-8.04.1-jeos-i386.iso.
2. sudo aptitude, install all updates and upgrades.
3. Still in aptitude, install apache2 and all dependencies selected by aptitude.
4. Still in aptitude, install mysql-common-5.0 (I think that was it? Cannot
remember the exact selection) and all dependencies selected by aptitude.
5. Still in aptitude, install phpmyadmin and all dependencies selected by
aptitude. When the "Configuring phpmyadmin" screen came up, I selected apache2,
which was the default selection. See attachment.

phpMyAdmin does not work. If I browse to http://[vm's
address]/phpmyadmin or http://[vm's address]/phpMyAdmin, I get a 404. I
can find nothing under /etc/apache2 to suggest that phpmyadmin has
modified any files.

clean install of Ubuntu 8.04. This is a clean install, not an upgrade
from something else.

I installed phpmyadmin, the latest package, using aptitude.

I immediately went to /etc/apache2/conf.d and noticed that, again, no
symbolic link is created.

Note that I am using apache2. I selected that when I installed.

2007-11-01 Thread Aren Cambre
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: phpmyadmin

See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3683702. The phpmyadmin
package is missing a symbolic link that would make it work.

** Affects: phpmyadmin (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
