[Bug 1060048] [NEW] jockey suggests cedarview-drm, but not cedarview-graphics-drivers
Public bug reported: On my hardware with a cedar trail vga chip, jockey suggests to install cedarview-drm, but not cedarview-graphics-drivers. When following the advise, it will render the system unusable, since the drm driver gets loaded, but the display drivers are missing. This leads to the screen turning black (no input signal) every time when X should show up. Solution: jockey should suggest cedarview-graphics-drivers instead, which pulls in cedarview-drm automatically. This is on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with all updates installed as of today (2012-10-02). I remember it works on my Ubuntu 10.10, but I haven't tried on newer Ubuntu releases. However, the 'lang' tester is useful for other scenarios, namely when you use a non-Korean locale and want to browse Korean websites, or text snippets which have been tagged with lang=ko in their XML/HTML markup. In that case firefox at least will choose the correct font automatically if it hasn't been specified in the XML/HTML markup itself. Also, at least on Ubuntu 10.10 that works. Not sure if other applications also support that functionality. -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.11 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iQIcBAEBCAAGBQJO3DQWAAoJENiwmJtstTzslz0QALXwCD7thb168kTjLxNsbR6X T/i/uBdU3UrYuU70zHvS/je6SrQnqwH7X5IgohccLPKEl5Q5TzneIVj6QX96+6rb 1Gnolie6YaO30QMxLymcjk+1VJwQTtAcE4brDFQ6WlC27cuaeAgeV3ukM9G6tBKB 3avp23qoU99VKh2nOCLaFO7Bz94N1irgZn630mSqAg4Uyj25ubEIbgZkm005xV6w FOLWN54mUOD5RASTwpWAsqf5hc7xgRIXM12l9n/ijPmu0/LM0WEZaZMSQCTEp4pS Vc1G6LsyUeHoGd773L1UV6cPmuCew+yDPNU8QtMMePzXNUlw8//M7jmLL87RFdsk 0qx9xod7RM8YqdFwKfbE9aWfZ7aFnuQwre6H81lDuwazJjaJgze5fcQf6E5ChYaE ewB4a/bAAmHLjuO3oiZvp/LnQLN/aiy23iPys+KlwpDxO/w8/+n+dsVchlX20Mzt DezXJwAoERqLVRe18bJcemK0hX4lOcZIbt5JCzO+RczG9gmPxW+5oLlllLBnXnJQ Zl5OyZKd2znAk3oAlVHJ+3i0E/rBMsQaZ6v0LkUQUaBA2qUkvFYg8qaxgolXcXjF tMBCecWw8DQMrqnwJ20gGdBEeT8Uc1+kU3XdIVuGU6SLd9QjIVfWsTYOi42xrqJx N82xF0zCjqWEIR8A6Cak =r0SI -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/835304 Title: contained fontconfig setting files force to make it default font To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-translations/+bug/835304/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

No, Google Instant search behaves the same, because the input method engine (ibus in this case) does not submit the string to the application (the browser in the case of Google) until you tell it to do so (by pressing Space or Enter). In your case, Google starts to search on the first three letters, since the forth one has not been submitted to the browser yet, so Google cannot know about it. It can only guess. What you want is a feature request, not a bug. And it's not Unity's fault, but the input method engine and more importantly the input method modules we use are not designed for this. There are possibilities to have the same behavior, however, at least for Chinese: use one of the ibus-table-* input methods, which are the old style input methods, where you have to select every single character and submit them separately to the application. By doing this, you can have the same function: Unity begins to search with the first character. But most Chinese users nowadays don't want to select every single character manually any more, but enjoy the intelligent input methods which detect and assemble the complete sentence with their internal logic. > Yes, I know CJK users "can" search with CJK letters and input method. > But it's really annoying to press lots of keys for find 2 letters or press > enter several times. > Also, it's too unfamiliar to people who use Unity first. > Because Windows and Mac doesn't have this problem it can even make Ubuntu's > first impression bad! > > Please consider this bug one more time. No, it's not Ubuntu's fault. The input methods we use are not designed for this, on any Linux distribution. The input methods on Windows and Mac work differently than the ones we are using. You may want to submit a feature request to upstream ibus, and more specifically to the intelligent input methods, like ibus-pinyin, ibus-sunpinyin, ibus-chewing and ibus-anthy (and maybe others), if you really care about this issue. I'm not sure however, if other Chinese and Japanese users agree with you. ;) -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.10 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iQIcBAEBCAAGBQJOZQQtAAoJENiwmJtstTzsPpkQALBKlbLTDLuGoqAyW38WtjHu MK1XRyip7gpg5Si/kR0HpfcTlq6oxxAkPz22YTiZ76wXIUBFTHjz7XTMmEPj9eA/ onfw+n4EsB9JzM4ukz6vIGsSTMwnapjmogtq2c1ytFKCOUzM/V1RZKZb1StZxzcb 7YEZ6Esq+bS2uiJXujdeUyWNSok5Bc4+zxmtxH3urt7Tc6vOwTdVGHtiriWyqv42 cO/w3WiIVraJ7jbjSOhCFp/axznq7xca03+nyDji9M/MJKp7IACv6soMAU5xq9D4 pjTZjug7XLgcQKny4D1K/QAW1zoiwQj6D5JqdJ8P+kvWTDY9KWUCcV7Ws5Zmxu11 BTLc+b5UIFOjbLtxQ/ZnJXkaGQAiBkkKaWD00k0xkltKpuCUq0Qjbc7uLuY55UMF 8K6RH08QG72lieiUIHhp/Bo3Zi1td7vPClCmSkSjNlLcKO/eVH588wscTe7B/Jds UyZZhWM7WKo1cn13aJJWV4Q1fHMRa2loy1mkN5WdMJKLjnCRzChnxBFRFvFhz+b3 qve3qltvi1f83tivrpj+Wn5TBKuSZdQoRgP6aNrcOghwEQNiiumxhiZ0OvtXwqNv gMmwY7JDea1uKktz1yusr1W304+kD9RFd/H0LLGwg88iVCp5NeWhZgLIjnPyArii ifByXMgWLcBFIU4u/C3c =qGfR -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/663776 Title: [dash] Search field in Unity can not support iBus To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ibus/+bug/663776/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I tested it with the latest version on Oneiric and it works like expected. The pre-edit stuff appears in the search field, so you can see what you type. I tested with ibus-hangul (Korean), ibus-anthy (Japanese) and ibus-pinyin (Chinese). The difference you described is the following: in hangul, you compose the syllables out of letters, like you described. There is no ambiguity, each syllable is unique. Therefor ibus submits the syllable when it's complete. Means, either you press Space or Enter to signal that the syllable is complete, or you start typing a new syllable, where ibus knows that the last component you typed can't be part of the syllable you typed before and therefore must be part of a new syllable. In Japanese and Chinese however, things work differently. Since we type the pronunciation and each pronunciation can map to multiple characters (words), we need to choose which characters we want. The input engines nowadays are smart enough to select the correct characters for whole sentences, by context search. Therefore we type the complete sentence in the pre-edit phase and review if the engine has chosen the correct characters. We can go back with the arrow keys and correct any wrongly chosen characters. Only when we are satisfied we submit the whole string with either Enter or Space, depending on the input method. Hence, the scenario you described is expected. Nothing wrong with it. :) Cheers Arne -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.10 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iQIcBAEBCAAGBQJOZFMdAAoJENiwmJtstTzsDdEP/isDlCa/ys8L85SyZDu87HyP VgGDsICFCKG0ZNEqY+zqhfafbHUe7m56QFMPdslBkw4m9AZOOfYqG/XHWiTdwuD4 AGUeh5kuXDYfYOCaq6E7tEWu+nBYLLh8xMAe4/Qs8xUIGRhpx6iRgyyN6YmxAseZ wNlG7fPPn1PrzLX/VevdRnIRT7tO0khZnmQ2QPTQ0OocPFKK8iNKz2IxOVvjXo6F iaEAHdzL2QWTuyfVd9p5oHko3fyZKk/Ra0pVesBdXaXhrjWFuEh/2ws2iYJep8SA sIBjOSYRWtPyLO5EE1cC6w5WaX0O34GE+vEC3f7GWvKhODE9+FSYwFI/ycDedPXU 0x8/h7Z14vUuPZesTqeHGkvr+PZGQZWQyctYn55A/LdIiCkPL9glZoQ97mWH/r0n UweXW8MuodKjh5TibpFFgGHdWRggkwe0jsA68BSKGiAKxfgvAKN+1zVeWp6wc91f w9zPaTIFwlmyX01IflXAFGiUCqj3IJLKuRQzhSEGOXpF+AHVWJ13IkgACDyM+8e5 Xx1yMNRsRYpo1ZGTyhQbW+3Jk0hO+iw6pDRonKTzMemQbQcHpQZMzD/C1x524GLa ZExelmlT16IGe3wx00kfcjMjF7PiiVqVbeNM6ubxIYx4IGVp9zPk9DiYWzg4WsHZ CJnU8LxtieaxeK+J9mrU =pndd -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/663776 Title: [dash] Search field in Unity can not support iBus To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ibus/+bug/663776/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Yep, and one more thing: language tagging only works if the text which is displayed is _also_ tagged with the correct language code. In an ideal world every application and every text would be tagged with the correct language code and the rendering engine would choose the correct font for every language. Configuring fontconfig to do so is only one part of the story. The next step would be to hunt down every application which does not support language tagging and does not have proper fontconfig integration. And this includes content management systems which are used on the web. And then you would need to check all kind of websites if they use proper language tagging or not, and report to the webmaster if they don't. (And then hope that they will fix it, which they probably won't.) The fontconfig configuration can (and probably should) be fixed in each distribution (we can coordinate this if upstream doesn't bother). Upstream fontconfig includes a list of more or less suitable fonts, but sais the distribution should adjust the list if necessary. Neither Debian nor Ubuntu do that currently and leave everything to the font package maintainers. So, this mean, libpoppler is one of those buggy libraries, which cannot deal with font fall backs in fontconfig. This needs to be fixed upstream! Can someone who can reliably reproduce this problem please file a bug upstream for libpoppler, attach the test document and the fontconfig configurations, and write a detailed test case what is expected and what actually happens? This bug appears because when the document was produced, the fonts which have been used to produce the document, have not been embedded into the document. This is bad practice in general, since in such cases the PDF viewer needs to use system fonts to render the text in the document. However, the font metrics may not be the same (and usually aren't) as the ones the original creator of the document has used. As a result the document will most likely look different than originally intended. This is the case which happens here. Poppler-data only provides the font metrics for CID encoded fonts. Therefor the data will only be used if CID encoded fonts (e.g. the ones provided by Adobe) have been used to create the pdf. If the document was created with any other font which is not installed on the viewer's system, libpoppler tries to use fontconfig to substitute the font information in the document with what is available on the system. However, it uses only the first font it finds and doesn't check if the required glyphs are actually available. This is the bug we are having here. If the required glyphs are not available, libpoppler should try the next font in the fontconfig list. Thanks a lot! :) -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.10 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iQIcBAEBCAAGBQJNkYE1AAoJENiwmJtstTzsI20P/R/kfpCms9Sd38MgFJAFY3k+ /PgHsBSPVQNkQvN2JOSDT6Q46LF5+uUQeLxnaSjQ+gWjsdx3eCwPB9h915B4u1E1 vqV0cknJVpIRYNJUYfb/HNG3MrjRKC8vhpOxT5Tvn1ZK6xHEmYe/REGZyhA+zWvc VBGt22X9dHZ2aSB7GBmNyLJa1ugMjkKMvu05ohq+o4yPkd9dkZNNqPjh9pJ670Ts MpCpWIDA2MwRlZ2ZOu+wXC7uEH1i7R3ubfZId/AXAP6UiYHOXQFkiay9QcZiHQP9 Ws8asgL8BpjMvY1+NHYUYuTxyndU9IP63Cga/IWOpdMlMHGs/ZBDnXBQlig+FCJ9 rZJiAnYDbut6D8z4xA5EvneZbs6L5ZPUgBRS8EpsKU2fUYTKbol2wcc3e0QkrZS5 GeSSS8FYPVtC782ohZndZqD9jEpzRXQs0LA0L4e5IoOdmzK5/pMywSZl6imVAXGw Hqv+O5/XpfibxEAo5d2gf2Y63gIldLJgTF76AEr5A1ZAEb38y2iABQuRaO8IRmkB bpLClKQwWKD4BRs0ToR9aJefyu/ws0q7e1VgtXIYvaCe9pR+AwuL2llT+9VtvrJg JDya7pNmiGrpOM/NXjbBNdpmNkkTOUyWiAs6oar/1A0UnY2JsePTpzKbFaqTk+K1 h8QDsh09PRxgU1+oseaW =eGeJ -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/713950 Title: Improvement for zh-tw fontconfig settings of language-selector -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

In language-selector the > language code 'ca' is shown as 'Catalan; Valencian' and in GDM as just > 'Catalan'. Yep. The language/country names and their translations in language-selector are taken from the iso-codes packages, i.e. they are the names defined in ISO639-1,2,3 and ISO3166 respectively. In GDM on the other hand the language/country names are hard coded, means the translations in both applications would be done separately and may conflict with each other, since they are two different upstreams. Since the @variations are not standardized in the iso-codes package, and I couldn't think of a "proper" solution which would work for all @variations, I did it like this in language-selector: the identifier behind @ in the locale name is chopped off and glued to the (translated) language name in the format "language[ (country)][ - variant]", where country and variant are optional. This also means, the variant name currently cannot be translated. Now, the proper solution would probably be something like this: * a "text" file with a mapping between language codes, whose names and translations need to override the ones from iso-codes * this file needs to be parsed and be translatable * it should be possible to use the same source for multiple programs (gdm, language-selector, ...) One solution I could think of is this: We create a new package, "iso-codes-overrides" or something like that. It contains a xml file in the same format as the iso639 or iso639-3 file in the iso-codes package, where we have the following fields: id="c...@valencia" name="Catalan (Valencia)" (or something similar) comment="Catalan dialect spoken in Valencia" (a text comment for translators to let them know what this entry is about) Then we just need to steal^Wcopy the packaging scripts from the iso-codes package to make the file translatable. This will then show up as a translatable package in Launchpad. Of course this solution would be probably Ubuntu (and maybe debian) only. The next step would be to replace the hard coded language/country names in gdm with gettext calls to our new package and the iso-codes package, in this order. In language-selector we would just need to insert and additional gettext call. These overrides would IMHO affect the following language codes/locales: aa...@saaho (should actually be 'ssy': Saaho, spoken in Eritrea, compared to Afar, spoken in Ethiopia.) be...@latin (Belorussian in Latin script, instead of Cyrillic) ca (Catalan, instead of "Catalan; Valencian") ca_ES (Catalan (Spain), instead of "Catalan; Valencian (Spain)") c...@valencia (Catalan (Valencian)) ca...@valencia (Catalan (Valencian) -- no need to include the country name here) gez...@abegede (extinct language, don't need to bother about it) gez...@abegede (extinct language, don't need to bother about it) ks...@devanagari (Kashmiri in Devanagari Script instead of Arabic) nan...@latin (Minnan in Latin script, instead of Han script) sd...@devanagari (Sindhi in Devanagari script, instead of Arabic) sr...@latin (Serbian in Latin script, instead of Cyrillic) tt...@iqtelif (Tatar in iQTElif (Latin) script, instead of Cyrillic) uz...@cyrillic (Uzbek in Cyrillic script, instead of Latin) zh-hans (Simplified Chinese -- used as language-pack identifier in language-selector) -> would eliminate the hack in language-selector zh-hant (Traditional Chinese -- used as language-pack identifier in language-selector) -> would eliminate the hack in language-selector Cheers Arne -- Arne Götje (高盛華) PGP/GnuPG key: 1024D/685D1E8C Fingerprint: 2056 F6B7 DEA8 B478 311F 1C34 6E9F D06E 685D 1E8C Key available at wwwkeys.pgp.net. As you pointed out above, we > would make GDM behave differently when the new language-selector version > is installed compared to when it's not, and that ought to take care of > the risks for backwards compatibility issues as well as issues with > other dms. The code in language-selector is a bit hackish and unprofessional, since Iʼm not an experience programmer or python coder and this whole thing more or less got dumped on me and I was under pressure to deliver features in time for the Ubuntu release. :( The reason *why* I implemented this feature was, because of the inability of Gnome to let the user choose a different locale setting from his desktop language. Something, that KDE for example has had for a long time already. Now for the locale handling code in language-selector: There are currently no checks done if a generated locale code is "valid" according to /usr/share/i18n/SUPPORTED. Instead, the code just appends ".utf8" to any existing ll_CC combination on the system, just because it works. For example, according to /usr/share/i18n/SUPPORTED, "en_IN" is listed there and therefor "valid", while an explicit "en_IN.utf8" is not. However, since some applications are "buggy" in that they "require" the encoding to be specified in the locale code, and appending ".utf8" by default "just works", I figured itʼs probably safe to omit this check. Well, Colin Watson recently pointed out to me in another bug report, that those buggy applications should get fixed instead and l-s should actually do the check and that there should be exiting functions in the locale handling libraries which do this check already. Regarding the language list for the LANGUAGE variable: Traditionally, localized software relied on the locale code to specify which language the software should use to interact with the user. Translations for languages which had some variations according to the county code therefor were duplicated (e.g. de_DE, de_CH and de_AT were largely the same, except for the small amount of different strings). The ability to "fall back" to a different language when translations are not present for the first one, and the ability to define this fall back list (the LANGUAGE variable), is an extension to gettext. Non-gettext applications, like cross platform applications (e.g. Mozilla, OpenOffice.org), donʼt have this functionality and therefor still rely on LANG or LC_MESSAGES to be set correctly. This gettext extension triggered a change in how gettext using applications got translated: in order to minimize the skew between language variations, translators decided to use a single language code as the default language and only put the diffs into country specific locales (e.g. use "de" as default, and the diffs go into "de_CH" and "de_AT" respectively). [Bug 662015] Re: WinXP fails to boot from boot menu, but boots fine from edit mode
After some trial and error, I found it was a configuration issue. The parttool module requires the following format: parttool (hd0,1) hidden- parttool (hd0,1) boot+ parttool (hd0,2) hidden+ parttool (hd0,2) boot- parttool (hd0,3) hidden+ So, it needs parentheses around the partition and can only accept one partition argument at the time. Would be nice to have the usage format documented for each module. [Bug 662015] [NEW] WinXP fails to boot from boot menu, but boots fine from edit mode
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: grub2 Problem: When choosing one of the WinXP partitions in the boot menu and pressing Enter, WinXP fails to boot with 'autochk' not found. When selecting the same entry in the boot menu, pressing 'e' and in the edit mode just pressing CRTL+x without modifying anything, the boot succeeds. This is always reproducible. Partition layout: hd0,msdos1: WinXP 1 hd0,msdos2: WinXP 2 hd0,msdos3: Data for WinXP 2 hd0,msdos 1 and hd0,msdos2 are exclusive, one of those two partitions needs to be hidden. hd0,msdos3 should only be usable in WinXP 2, therefore gets hidden when WinXP 1 is going to be booted. What puzzles me is that the same configuration works when using the edit mode, but fails when choosing the entries in the boot menu directly. No matter which of the two WinXP installations I choose to boot, the problem is the same. /boot/grub/grub.cfg is attached. Arne, what do you think? > That is, because es-ES is one of those locales, where Launchpad stores it as 'es' without country code. Those get matched to es-ES correctly, because those mappings are hardcoded in the po2xpi script. Any other es_* locale will be affected, i.e. any locale, where Launchpad stores it as ll_CC and not just ll. About your chrome settings, I don't know, because we don't set them in the language packs. [Bug 632760] Re: Language variants don't work in Firefox because the language codes are separated with an underscore rather than a hyphen in chrome.manifest
I have uploaded a fix to lp:~arnegoetje/rosetta/po2xpi-arne which attempts to fix this. The following are the instructions to that person who is handling the language-packs now: On the server where the language-packs are generated, the following needs to be done: * in langpack-o-matic is a subdirectory po2xpi, which should point to po2xpi-arne. in This subdirectory, please use bzr pull lp:~arnegoetje/rosetta/po2xpi-arne * to fix this bug in the current packages, do the following: 1. in maverick/sources-base/language-pack-{bn|en|es|pt|ta|zh}-base/data/ is a mozilla.tar.gz . Untar it in a temporary directory. 2. it will untar several subdirectories, one per language. In each subdirectory is a chrome.manifest and a firefox-3.6-$LANGCODE.jar file. 3. in each chrome.manifest replace only the first ll_CC with ll-CC 4. tar everything up again and replace the mozilla.tar.gz in the language-pack with the new one. 5. cd ~/langpack-o-matic; for l in bn en es pt ta zh; do cd ../maverick/sources-base/language-pack-${l}-base; dch -v 1:10.10+20100930.1 -D maverick "Fix firefox translations (LP: #632760)"; cd ../; for p in gnome kde; do cd language-pack-${p}-base; dch -v 1:10.10+20100930.1 -D maverick "Version bump, no changes."; cd ../; done; cd ../sources-update/; for p in language-pack-${l} language-pack-gnome-${l} language-pack-kde-${l}; do cd ${p}; dch -v 1:10.10+20100930.1 -D maverick "Version bump, no changes."; cd ../; done; cd ~/langpack-o-matic; echo "../maverick/sources-base/language-pack-${l}-base\n../maverick/sources-base/language-pack-gnome-${l}-base\n../maverick/sources-base/language-pack-kde-${l}-base\n../maverick/sources-updates/language-pack-${l}\n../maverick/sources-updates/language-pack-gnome-${l}\n../maverick/sources-updates/language-pack-kde-${l}" >> updated-packages; done 6. upload the packages like normal. @dpm: This bug seems only to happen when po2xpi runs in devmode, i.e. all exported .po files will be used and not just the officially published .xpi files. If you don't want this, edit the 'import' file in the langpack-o-matic source code and replace line 281 with the next higher ubuntu release number. Or, if you want to use 'devmode' for all releases in future, replace the code with something more appropriate. We ususally change the code in our local branch checkouts of langpack-o-matic, commit the changes and then pull the changes on the server, where we generate the langpacks. You would need to re-run langpack-o-matic then and bump up the version in the launchpad translation tarball. From what I've understood, the Chinese > translation should not be changed, so contexts wouldn't help. Of > course, I could add translation contexts if you have an example of a > language where there's an issue. You have one example at hand here: The Chinese translation "加入" means "Subscribe (a user) to a group" or "to join a group" or "to become a member", while "新增" means "New group" and is often used in the meaning of "Create a new group". Terms like "Add" or "Delete" may be perfectly OK in English if you are able to see the context by looking at the UI (something which is not true for the visual impaired), but in Chinese translations are usually descriptive. "To add" would be translated in different ways, depending on *what* you add to *where* or if you create it (i.e. it didn't exist before). If the intended meaning is "add an item to the list", then this exact description should be added in the message context. The only general translation for Chinese I could think of would be "加上" ("to add sth into or on top of sth"), although Chinese users will probably twitch when they see this. And just because it's a stock button in gtk, doesn't mean that it's a) "standard" and b) good practice to do this. If you need to give descriptions for visual impaired people anyway, why not do it for everyone by creating more descriptive button labels in the first place? Something like "Add group" and "Delete group" would probably be descriptive enough already. > So I think the best I can do is say "Available groups on the system:" > on top of the list, and possibly move the "Manage Groups" button to > below the users list, to make it clear this is > Just my 2 NT$. -- the word "加入" in group managment should be "新增" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/603746 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

That should be more >> clear. > Suggestions? > OK, I jump onto it... The main problem is that general actions, like "Add", "Edit", "Delete" are ambiguous, even in English. It is not clear to the user (and the translator) what is going to be added, edited or deleted. What's even worse is, if there are multiple buttons with the same description in different places of the GUI and each button triggers a different action: what happens in gettext is, these button descriptions get unified into a single string to translate. I.e. there is only one msgid "Add" to be translated, although it is used multiple times in different locations for different actions. And different actions are described with different translations in many languages, not only Chinese. To prevent this, the developer should add a message context, a short explanation to the translator how this message should be understood and translated. This needs to be in the source code and is usually a comment one line above the translatable string. In glade, you have a context field where you can put such information. This will have two advantages: 1. gettext won't unify the string anymore if the message context is different, so it would be actually possible for translators to translate two "Add" buttons differently, based on the action they call. 2. Translators will see this comment associated with the translatable string. So, even if they don't have the GUI in front of them, they know how to translate the string. This speeds up translation time and is a great help, since translators don't need to spend time any more to try out every single button in the GUI, which can potentially hose their system (depending on which action they call). So, my proposed solution: add message contexts for all buttons and for any message which *could* be ambiguous. -- the word "加入" in group managment should be "新增" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/603746 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 611224] Re: Please merge ibus (1.3.6-1) from Debian Squeeze
I'm working on the merge to version 1.3.7-1 now. However, it would be nice if the patches could be rewritten, so that they can be sent to upstream for inclusion. 01-ubuntu_desktop clearly qualifies for being applied upstream. 02_title_update.dpatch should get updated, so that it can be used in Debian and Ubuntu (check if distribution is Debian/Ubuntu and if im-switch is present, then display different strings than in upstream). 05_appindicator.dpatch and 06_show_menuitem.dpatch: I don't know enough about appindicator and GTK in order to comment on that. But it would be nice if those code changes could also go into upstream, maybe with a check if appindicator is present on the system... ** Changed in: ibus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Medium ** Changed in: ibus (Ubuntu) Status: New => In Progress ** Changed in: ibus (Ubuntu) Milestone: None => ubuntu-10.10-beta ** Changed in: ibus (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) => Arne Goetje (arnegoetje) -- Please merge ibus (1.3.6-1) from Debian Squeeze https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/611224 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 613377] [NEW] mouse pointer is invisible
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel since upgrading to the latest version in Maverick two days ago, my mouse pointer is invisible on the desktop. When I hover over buttons or list entries, they get highlighted and I can click on them. But the pointer still remains invisible. Even in gdm I don't have a mouse pointer. BTW: I have removed unclutter and rebooted, but the problem is still there. [Bug 603022] Re: [MIR] mlterm
I prefer to not add an additional switch to language-selector, but install it for everyone who installs translations in a language which uses RTL scripts. And surely it shouldn't replace gnome-terminal, just be an alternative. Users who need to use a terminal and deal with RTL text, will know or figure out which one to use. mlterm has been pretty popular already in such circles, I assume. -- [MIR] mlterm https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/603022 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
