I also have this problem and confirm that just renaming /usr/bin/apt-

On the Ubuntu Mate I use, none of the solutions (system property and
Eclipse.ini changes) seems working for some reason. Eclipse went slow
till being unusable right after upgrade and now stays in this condition.

[Bug 1244691] Re: CF card is no longer detected after the recent upgrade

2013-10-28 Thread Audrius Meskauskas
I have removed the newer kernels (using sudo apt-get remove) and tested
with the old kernel 3.5.0-31, the card still does not work. May not be a
kernel bug?

I have also tested the same CF card on another machine running much
older Ubuntu version. The card still works there.

[Bug 706624] [NEW] Hacks required to get the sound output on the rear jack of SG41J1

2011-01-23 Thread Audrius Meskauskas
Public bug reported:

SG41J1 barebone has rear and front audio outputs. While the front output
works out of box, the rear output (that is more convenient to connect to
the speakers) only works after applying the series of hacks, as
described in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1618138.

This bug likely should not be considered "solved" as even hda-verb is
not available in the Ubuntu repository and must be googled on a web to
download. At least, I propose to include hda-verb but surely would be
better to have some better fix.

sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x0d SET_CONNECT_SEL 0

restores the output immediately.

The rear output works immediately and out of box under Windows 7.

[Bug 703759] [NEW] No sound with Pinnacle PCTV 310i

2011-01-16 Thread Audrius Meskauskas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythtv

The old Pinnacle PCTV 310i (modprobe saa7134-alsa) produces with MythTV
video output but no sound.

Another program, tvtime, can produce the sound after the command

arecord -D hw:1,0 -r 32000 -c 2 -f S16_LE | aplay -

so the sound can get into the system with the used driver and hardware.
This command does not bring sound when playing TV with mythtv.

I tried to set the sound device as ALSA:plughw:1,0 , ALSA:hw:1,0 and
hw:1,0 in the capture card properties but this was not successful.

[Bug 703525] [NEW] Hangs idenfintely collecting about the sound system bug

2011-01-16 Thread Audrius Meskauskas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apport

Expected versus actual: The reporter must never hang when reporting the
bug, and it does.

Bug reporter hangs when I try to report that there is no sound with
tvtime application. Regardless on what is about this another issue, the
bug reporter first of all should not hang.

I run ubuntu-bug,
* then select I have the sound problem
* then select I have playback sound problem
* then pass the kind of support screen
* then select SAA7134
* then pass another support screen explaining that I must select the card for
input (does not help anyway)
* then pass the warning about the speaker test
* then it hags fully. No any sound is heard from the speakers.

Likely the bug reporter should have time-outs. If you report a bug, your
system is buggy, thats for sure !

[Bug 703523] [NEW] No sound with Pinnacle PCTV 310i

2011-01-16 Thread Audrius Meskauskas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tvtime

Expected versus actual: I expect to hear the sound when watching TV with
tvtime, I do not get any.

Pinnacle PCTV 310i is an old card that is widely represented on a web as
working under Linux for a long time.

I get tv view, get S-Video view but cannot get the sound working. This
card has no separate audio output to connect to the sound input on the
motherboard.

The card shows in sound preferences where it is configured as "analog
stereo input", and it is selected in another tab as device that should
be used for input.

I tried numerous hacks listed in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/613809 but
none of them worked so I do not think that discussion is much relevant.

The sound in general (sounds from the sound theme, Skype sound output)
works without problems.

[Bug 613809] Re: Rhythmbox FM plug-in, tvtime and gnomeradio NO SOUND, no /dev/mixer present

2011-01-16 Thread Audrius Meskauskas
I also try to use tvtime and cannot get any sound with my Pinnacle PCTV
310i . I have specially searched for bought this rather old card because
the number of web references that it works under Linux.

I get channels, get video but have no sound and this card has no
separate audio output to connect to the audio input on the motherboard.
The card shows up in various ALSA settings, can be selected, tvtime
delivers both television and S-Video capture data but no any sound is
heard. I tried the hacks proposed here but so far this is not helpful.
Enjoying video without sound and hoping for the best.

[Bug 702857] [NEW] Default OpenJDK installation crashes with headless exception

2011-01-14 Thread Audrius Meskauskas
Public bug reported:

This bug have been discovered in 64 bit 10.04 LTS. It is reported from
the different Ubuntu machine.

When trying to start a trivial GUI application, OpenJDK has been
crashing with HeadlessException. Web search has confirmed that I am not
alone with my problem:

http://us.generation-nt.com/answer/bug-576982-fop-java-awt-headlessexception-help-197107322.html
http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=112972

It looks that some version of fake OpenJDK is installed but it actually
cannot run any program with GUI. This is much worse than simply stating
that Java is NOT installed, as creates the misleading impression of
OpenJDK being simply buggy. Deciding from that is written in pages under
the two links above, most of the users in such case will immediately try
to switch to Oracle's proprietary java or even away to the alternative
OS.

I think that if OpenJDK is already half installed maybe there is no big
harm to have it fully installed by default. Alternatively, some more
reasonable error message should appear on the failed startup, at best
directly indicating the name of the missing package. The third solution
is NOT to have OpenJDK installed; this also would lead the user to the
correct conclusion (I miss Java packages) faster.
