I just want to add a "me too"

I have HL-1430 and Edgy.

The printer will print once and then I have to unplug the USB cable and
replug it to get the printer to print remaining jobs.

I note that some people report that this is fixed, but no one tells us
how to fix it.

[Bug 57050] Re: Brother HL-1430 USB printer will only print once

2007-02-14 Thread Bananabob
I believe I may have found a solution to this problem.

I Tried to add Brothers own lpr and cups driver as per
http://solutions.brother.com/linux/sol/printer/linux/cups_drivers.html#de
Needed to issue "sudo mkdir /var/spool/lpd" as the first dpkg aborted with

mkdir: cannot create directory `/var/spool/lpd/HL1430': No such file or
directory

I ran the install again and it was ok. I then installed the cupswrapper
but got

lpadmin: Unable to copy PPD file!

Printer still worked after this but still has same printing only once
problem. So I decided to ignore the PPD file error.

I then deleted the existing printer definition
"System>Administration>Printers" right click on printer "remove".
Created a new printer by clicking on "New Printer". Then for the driver
part of the definition I set the Manufacture to Brother and selected
"HL-1430 for Cups" in the Model section. The Driver was set to Standard
- there were no others available.

Since then the printer appears to operate correctly, BUT, I have had to
reset the printer by unplugging the USB cable at least one since doing
the above.

I have a feeling that the problem may be linked to printing from
different programs one after the other, but have been unable to recreate
the problem.

Would all of you people suffering from the problem, like to give my
solution a try and report back.

2007-02-15 Thread Bananabob
Edit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf so that it has a line "FileDevice Yes",
then restart CUPS with "sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart" and create a
queue for your printer using the URI "file:/dev/usblp0" and the same PPD
file as for your current print queue. This surrounds the USB backend.
Tell whether you can print normally using this queue.

The edit bit I understand, but as for create a queue for your
printer using the URI "file:/dev/usblp0" and the same PPD file as for
your current print queue. I am completely lost as to what you
want us to try.

[Bug 43343] Re: CPU Frequency Scaling not supported (Amilo M 1437G)

2007-01-09 Thread Bananabob
I had this problem on my PC but I have fixed it.

When I originally installed Ubuntu Edgy everything worked fine. I booted
up and the CPU Frequency Scaled as expected.

Then I started to play with the setting of the Login Window
(System>Administration>Login Window) There I unchecked "Show Actions
Menu". From then on, every time I booted up, I got the message CPU
Frequency Scaling Not Supported. (I did note that on a reboot the
message was not shown and the CPU scaled as expected).

After setting the "Show Actions Menu" on, I now boot every time with no
problems what so ever.

It is a mystery to me why this problem should be caused by unticking
that box in the Login Window menu, and also why a reboot (not a complete
shutdown) would make it go away.

[Bug 187313] Re: [MASTER] right click (with button release) might activate random popup-menu-item

2009-01-05 Thread Bananabob
I have mouse problems with FF 3.0.5 in Hardy. I can not yet report what is
causing them, but I can tell you that my problems are mainly with the middle
button of a 3 button mouse, random events occur, not the action that I expect,
which is open a page in a new tab. However if I use both the left and right
buttons together at the same time, I get the page to open in a new tab.
I hope that this is fixed soon, because I am just about ready to change over to
another browser.

[Bug 239752] Re: package dovecot-common 1:1.0.10-1ubuntu5.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2008-11-25 Thread Bananabob
I have managed to get around this problem. It appears to be due to the
presence/non-presence of some directories and files.

I made sure the following were present:
/var/run/dovecot/login
/var/run/dovecot/login
/etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf

I was then able to reinstall dovecot-common

There is a bug 255367 which has this information in it.

There was also another problem when tring to start dovecot.

Warning: mail_extra_groups setting was often used insecurely so it is now
deprecated,
use mail_access_groups or mail_privileged_group instead

This can be fixed by editing /etc/dovecot.conf

change the line:
mail_extra_groups = mail
to:
mail_access_groups = mail

I found this information at
http://www.rasyid.net/2008/03/11/upgrade-dovecot-1010-to-1013/

[Bug 120285] Re: Superblock not read at boot

2007-09-30 Thread Bananabob
Well here we go again! This morning when I powered up my PC i had the following
problems
1 - USB (I-pod) device would not automount.
so I rebooted with a shutdown -r now
2. had 3 trys at this because of all the problems noted in previous entries
3. Then I had no menus from the gnome toolbar and the shutdown command was not
found
So I hit the reset switch
4. Back to USB (I-pod) device would not automount.
So once again I issued a shutdown -r now

Ahhh. it works now.

[Bug 120285] Re: Superblock not read at boot

2007-06-26 Thread Bananabob
A new problem in this saga

Two days in a row I have had the following messages on bootup.

BusyBox V1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-3ubuntu3) Built-in Shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
(initramfs)

Of course on reboot - I have to use the reset button on the box, everything
works.

It would appear that the problem with booting is more to do with this
kernel than anything else. (but what do I know about kernels?) :-)

Please notice that the line 10.0.0.90 thorium.atom thorium has been

[Bug 194230] [NEW] Unable to change volumes using sliders

2008-03-07 Thread Bananabob
Public bug reported:

I have an M-Audio M2496 card which uses the ICE1712 chip.
I recently upgraded (using software update) to Audacity 1.3.4-beta. I run
Ubuntu Gutsy.
I now find that I am unable to change the volume of recording or playback using
the sliders in the Audacity toolbar. This worked fine in my previous release of
Audacity. I can change the volumes using other mixers like Envy24 or Gnome ALSA
mixer

Attached is my asound.conf.

[Bug 118725] Unable to adjust sound levels when recording in feisty

2007-06-04 Thread Bananabob
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alsa-base

No matter what program I use to record sound with. I can not adjust my
sound levels. I have tried Audacity, Track_rec and Gnome Sound Recorder.

I have tried to adjust the recording levels by using Envy24 Control
mixer, alsamixer, alsamixergui. gnome alsa mixer. I have also tried to
use the controls in Audacity, but that doesn't work either. I also have
no button in Audacity to select Mic or Line input.

[Bug 120285] Superblock not read at boot

2007-06-13 Thread Bananabob
Public bug reported:

At boot I sometimes get the following message

Log of fsck -C -R -A -a
Thu Jun 14 10:17:08 2007

fsck 1.40-WIP (14-Nov-2006)
fsck.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/Volume0/lvol0
/dev/Volume0/lvol0:
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193

fsck died with exit status 8

Thu Jun 14 10:17:08 2007

If I then type shutdown -r now the system gives me a logon screen. I
then ask for a reboot and the system will boot perfectly normally.

[Bug 118725] Re: Unable to adjust sound levels when recording in feisty

2007-06-20 Thread Bananabob
I thought that I had made it clear in my original post that I had used
the envy24 controil tool, and I quote

"I have tried to adjust the recording levels by using Envy24 Control
mixer, alsamixer, alsamixergui. gnome alsa mixer. I have also tried to
use the controls in Audacity, but that doesn't work either. I also have
no button in Audacity to select Mic or Line input."

This problem did not occur in Ubuntu Edgy. I was able to adjust the
sound levels for recording in Audacity there. I was not, however able to
adjust the record sound levels in other recording programs in Edgy.

Going to Feisty I thought would fix the problems I had in Edgy, it
hasn't, it has been made worse.

I repeat that my problem is that I can not set the record level in any
program available in Feisty.

As can be seen I am not the only one having problems. I do not
appreciate this sort of comment and the rejection of this bug.

Here is my FSTAB. My question is what does it mean and how do I change
it to get it work with the new kernel? It seems to me that I am using
dev/sdxx ids!

My set up is supposed to be this. I have a RAID setup. One disk that is where
all my data and system files are held. The second disk is the alternate in the
RAID. The front of it contains Development partition this is empty. The rest is
the mirror of my data.

I have no idea what the volume is for but I have been getting the following
message
 dm_task_set_name: Device /dev/mapper/Volume0-lvol0 not found
So I assume that my fstab is incorrect in some way. Although it is exactly the
same as my Edgy one apart from the CDROM mount line.

[Bug 120285] Re: Superblock not read at boot

2007-06-25 Thread Bananabob
Hello, I'm Bananabob's Son.

Here are a few more pieces of information.

The raid is set up using partions 3 of both drives.
Swap is on partions 2 of both drives to load balance.
Root is on partion 1 of the first drive. Partition 1 of the second drive is for
a developmental root if the need arises.

On the raid (md0) there is a LVM Physical Volume (Volume0), in that is a
logical volume (lvol0).

On the logical volume is the /home partition.

I have changed the fstab for the /home partition to use UUID and will
get Dad to update you if the problem continues.

[Bug 120285] Superblock not read at boot

2007-06-13 Thread Bananabob
Public bug reported:

At boot I sometimes get the following message

Log of fsck -C -R -A -a
Thu Jun 14 10:17:08 2007

fsck 1.40-WIP (14-Nov-2006)
fsck.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/Volume0/lvol0
/dev/Volume0/lvol0:
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193

fsck died with exit status 8

Thu Jun 14 10:17:08 2007

If I then type shutdown -r now the system gives me a logon screen. I
then ask for a reboot and the system will boot perfectly normally.

As you can see from below this is rubbish:

Public bug reported:

sound levels. I have tried Audacity, Track_rec and Gnome Sound Recorder.

I have tried to adjust the recording levels by using Envy24 Control

use the controls in Audacity, but that doesn't work either. I also have
no button in Audacity to select Mic or Line input.

[Bug 57050] Re: Brother HL-1430 USB printer will only print once

2007-02-16 Thread Bananabob
I have carried out the instructions you gave above, and I can report
thjat everything now works using the "test" printer.

What is next?

Do I need to delete the changes made to cupsd.conf and delete the test
printer?

Thank you for the quick fix.

There is another bug report at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cupsys/+bug/69265
which describes the same fault.

Can I delete the usb file that I copied to my home directory, or shjould
I hold onto it - just in case?

As you can see the network is now available. This does not fix the problem
across a reboot.

[Bug 239752] Re: package dovecot-common 1:1.0.10-1ubuntu5.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2008-11-25 Thread Bananabob
I have managed to get around this problem. It appears to be due to the
presence/non-presence of some directories and files.

I made sure the following were present:
/var/run/dovecot/login
/var/run/dovecot/login
/etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf

I was then able to reinstall dovecot-common

There is a bug 255367 which has this information in it.

There was also another problem when tring to start dovecot.

Warning: mail_extra_groups setting was often used insecurely so it is now
deprecated,
use mail_access_groups or mail_privileged_group instead

This can be fixed by editing /etc/dovecot.conf

change the line:
mail_extra_groups = mail
to:
mail_access_groups = mail

I found this information at
http://www.rasyid.net/2008/03/11/upgrade-dovecot-1010-to-1013/

Is anyone looking into this problem?

[Bug 122948] [network-admin] appends network name to machine name

fe00::0 ip6-localnet

ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

Now when I add a machine (10.0.0.98 test.atom test) to this it reads:

127.0.0.1 localhost
10.0.0.10 neon.atom neon
10.0.0.6 carbon.atom carbon

ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts
10.0.0.98 test.atom test

Please notice that the line 10.0.0.90 thorium.atom thorium has been
changed to 10.0.0.90 thorium.atom thorium.atom

To correct this this I have to edit /etc/hosts using gedit.

[Bug 120285] Re: Superblock not read at boot

A few days ago my son ran the following command:

sudo update-initramfs -u

Since then I have had no boot-up problems. This does not mean that the
problem is fixed, because I can go for days without having any problems,
and then get several in a row. So I would like to wait a while before I
claim the problem is fixed.

So in light of your request here is the information.
