[Bug 1196584] Re: Please update package fonts-liberation to version 2.00.1

2015-01-12 Thread Beni Cherniavsky
Yes please! Liberation fonts 2.0 have considerably better unicode coverage.
Example why I care: currently the default Ubuntu install has precisely 1(!)
monospace font covering Hebrew (FreeMono) and 1 more comes if I install Hebrew
language support (Miriam Mono CLM). Ubuntu font family Hebrew is still far
from ready:
So Liberation Mono 2.0's added Hebrew coverage (which to my eyes is prettier
than FreeMono or Miriam) is a significant improvement.

If this bug can't move forward for some reason, consider instead including
fonts-croscore in default install — more or less the same fonts as Liberation
2.0, under different names (e.g. Cousine has monospace Hebrew coverage).

[Bug 724022] Re: Wishlist: Enable use of Ubuntu Mono as .psf console-setup font

2014-03-30 Thread Beni Cherniavsky
Will it be possible to include a larger version of the font, e.g. 32x16?
16x8 is unusably tiny (and unnecessarily ugly) on retina displays.

I'm on Yoga 2 which has a ridiculous density 3200x1800 13 display.
Even with 32x16 fonts, I get 200x56 chars console.
I briefly tried Ubuntu fonts in the console but whether I like the shape or not
VGA and Terminus win simply because they have 32x versions.

[Bug 202114] Re: Passwords saved as plain text

2013-08-13 Thread Beni
Since Filezilla won't get a feature like master password or integration
in keyrings, see http://trac.filezilla-project.org/ticket/1373 , I
suggest using a password manager like KeepassX and disable password
saving in Filezilla. You still can save URLs and usernames in Filezilla
but copy passwords from your password manager.

[Bug 792085] Re: Automatic remount of safely removed drive

2013-05-03 Thread beni
I can confirm the bug. And it started after the upgrade to 13.04 - 64bit on a
Dell XPS-8500. It was not happening on 12.10.
Only affects USB 3.0 ports (2.0 safely removes ok).
The only way to unmount a USB hard drive in my case is clicking on the arrow
icon on Nautilus window. If I click on Safely Remove, both on Nautilus or on
launcher icon, the drive is re-mounted.

[Bug 969359] Re: [keyboard]: gnome-settings-daemon consumes 100% cpu (and blinking numlock)

2012-08-16 Thread Beni Cherniavsky
I'm seeing this on 12.04 with 3.4.2-0ubuntu0.2.
It's not only eating most of the CPU, but also tons of memory - this morning I
unlocked the computer and g-s-d had 4.3GB VIRT, 3.2GB RES!
After killing, it only takes 450M VIRT and 8M RES.

[Bug 1000675] [NEW] apt://package URLs not recognized as URLs

2012-05-17 Thread Beni Cherniavsky
Public bug reported:

[ubuntu/debian specific feature request]
URLs such as http://foo are underlined when hovered and ctrl+clickable to open.
It'd would be nice to recognize apt:foo or at least apt://foo, so READMEs,
outputs of commands like apt-cache search etc. could privide ctrl+clickable
links to packages.

[upstream feature request, which would include the above]
More generally, gnome-terminal should highlight any URL scheme supported on the
system (specifically by epiphany).
I guess the canonical place to check is gconf
/schemas/desktop/gnome/url-handlers

Not sure if bare scheme:foo should be supported or only sheme://foo which
have less false positive.
But since the behavior is unobtrusive (only highlighted when hovered), I think
both.

[Bug 928981] [NEW] new firefox doesn't work with open-xchange-webmail-portal

2012-02-08 Thread Beni
Public bug reported:

since update of Firefox to version 10.0, my webmail-portal (open-xchange-server

[Bug 869502] Re: Kernel-Panic with 3.0.0.12-generic on asus eee pcs and msi wind (both using rt2800 wifi chipset)

2011-12-09 Thread beni
Hi there, just to confirm the bug and the workaround. I was also having
several kernel panics on my eee 1000h + Ubuntu 11.10 (3.0.0-12 and also
3.0.0-13-generic) with RT2860 and the power management workaround worked
for me also. I also report a great improvement on network speed after
this workaround.

My first install on this machine was Ubuntu 9.10 and I've been upgrading
the system since then.

[Bug 666418] Re: gnome-terminal.wrapper doesn't wait until program finishes

2011-05-29 Thread Beni Cherniavsky
Yes, the situation is the same on natty.

Googling more, it seems there is a similar situation with konsole.
So to portably launch a command in a terminal and wait for it to finish, one
currently needs to special-case each terminal, like
http://hg.netbeans.org/cnd-main/file/tip/cnd.debugger.gdb/src/org/netbeans/modules/cnd/debugger/gdb/proxy/ExternalTerminal.java#l209

I didn't find a proper definition of how x-terminal-emulator SHOULD behave, but:
- http://bugs.debian.org/481123 says Without such an option, urxvtc cannot be
an x-terminal-emulator alternative, because x-terminal-emulator is expected not
to return before the terminal window is closed.
- It's clearly intended to be xterm-compatible, and xterm -e command waits.
- If it waits, caller has freedom to background it; if it doesn't caller has
*no way* to wait for completion of command.

[Bug 666418] [NEW] gnome-terminal.wrapper doesn't wait until program finishes

2010-10-25 Thread Beni Cherniavsky
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

gnome-terminal -e some_program
usually (if another gnome-terminal is already running) returns immediately;
most other terminal emulators (e.g. xterm) return only after the program
finishes, which is much more convenient when opening programs in a terminal
from scripts.
gnome-terminal --disable-factory -e some_program
does wait, which solves the issue - unless you're writing a portable script and
use
x-terminal-emulator -e some_program
where you'll get different behavior depending on the alternative selected for
x-terminal-emulator.
And you can't use x-terminal-emulator --disable-factory -e some_program
because xterm etc. will barf on it.

IMHO, gnome-terminal itself should always wait for the command to return.
But defaulting to no-factory mode would lose all benefits for which the factory
was created;
waiting for completion notification from the factory would solve it better but
I have no idea if it's easy to implement.

An easier solution is to always add --disable-factory in gnome-terminal.wrapper.
This would keep the behavior of gnome-terminal but unify the behavior of
x-terminal-emulator.

Thanks for the patch.
But does the wording mean there is a new-style multiscreen setup I'm
missing out? :-)

Re: [Bug 577916] Re: lucid regression: does not resume from hibernation

2010-06-01 Thread Beni Cherniavsky
@Carl Michael Giblhauser:
You say 'hibernate' command WORKS? Could you please send your collected data
after hibernating with 'hibernate' for comparison?

It works indeed! 'apt-get install hibernate' also pulled 'uswsusp'.
Attached /var/log/messages after the successful resume.

I must try that... if it does work then it's not a kernel bug, but
 something else's...

I believe it uses a different hibernation mechanism now,
so the bug in the standard mechanism is still probably a kernel bug.

Re: [Bug 577916] Re: lucid regression: does not resume from hibernation, restarts fresh

2010-05-11 Thread Beni Cherniavsky
Confirming that that networking is disabled when booting after after
hibernate, enabled when booting after shutdown. Don't know how it's related
to this.

Attaching dmesg of boot after hibernate (all my apport logs where taken then
too) and after shutdown.
You can see the diff with interesting parts highlighted at
http://pastebin.org/221892
Interestingly, BOTH dmesg logs show the line:

PM: Resume from disk failed.

The big difference is that after hibernate, I get:

EXT4-fs (sda6): INFO: recovery required on readonly filesystem
EXT4-fs (sda6): write access will be enabled during recovery
...
EXT4-fs (sda6): orphan cleanup on readonly fs
EXT4-fs (sda6): ext4_orphan_cleanup: deleting unreferenced inode 1146
...
EXT4-fs (sda6): ext4_orphan_cleanup: deleting unreferenced inode 12145
EXT4-fs (sda6): 44 orphan inodes deleted
EXT4-fs (sda6): recovery complete
EXT4-fs (sda6): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode

Both facts indicate that the failure is during hibernation, not during
resume.

The after-hibernate version is also missing some messages at the end about
sound, network wireless. Now that I think of it, this computer has also
been booting (after failed hibernate attempts) with sound muted, and now
that I did a shutdown it came up with sound enabled. Does anybody else see
this?

[Bug 577916] Re: lucid regression: does not resume from hibernation, restarts fresh

2010-05-10 Thread Beni Cherniavsky
I have the same situation - stopped hibernating from May 3, when I upgraded to
lucid (initramfs-tools upgraded from 0.92bubuntu53 to 0.92bubuntu78).
The network is always disabled after boot (don't know if it's correlated with
hibernating, as I didn't try any shutdowns since then).
It's a Dell Latitude D520, intel video.

I notice that I have two swap partitions, with
/etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume containing the UUID of one of them.
Could be hibernating to the other one? How can I check this?

dmesg says nothing at all about searching for a resume device. Will
apport-collecting now.

[Bug 549654] Re: no keyboard indicator applet

2010-05-04 Thread Beni Cherniavsky
One problem with it being a notification area icon is that it's less usable on
dual monitor setups.
You could have a separate layout indicator applet on every monitor, but have 2
notification areas just don't work.
[This is a long know bug #128735, which is hard to solve due to the design of
notification area.]

The new Indicator Applet does works well when instantiated twice, so I
can see and adjust volume power on both monitors. It'd be sweet if
the keyboard layout management could be migrated to the new indicator
framework as well...

by 2 each press, hard to prove).
However, after running:

xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL combination# no KMS,
YMMV

I can access all 9 levels by hotkeys!
What's strange, it keeps working for all BACKLIGHT_CONTROL values, even when I
set it back to the original kernel value!
So I'm now unable to reproduce the 5 levels situation (will experiment more
next time I reboot).

Of the possible BACKLIGHT_CONTROL modes, kernel seems best because it
allows to read and set the brightness through xrandr:

xrandr -v --verbose | grep -A1 BACKLIGHT
xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT 5 # 0..8 inclusive

(again, I'm running with nomodeset = KMS off; xrandr interface details
seem to depend on this so YMMV.)

However, with all BACKLIGHT_CONTROL modes, I can read and set the
brightness through:

cat /proc/acpi/video/IGD/LCD/brightness
echo 70 | sudo tee /proc/acpi/video/IGD/LCD/brightness # 20..100 inclusive,
in steps of 10

The brightness applet is also independent of BACKLIGHT_CONTROL - for all
modes, can access all 9 levels but can't read the current level
(sometimes its icon says it knows it can't read it, sometimes doesn't -
but anyway its level never reflects changes made by hotkeys).

All this leads me to guess the 5-levels issue is still some kind of
keystroke-stuffing-triggering-double-adjustment, unrelated to the xrandr
interface - but somehow using that xrandr interface once kills this
interaction...

[Bug 458746] Re: No speech is not comming out on during system test program on msi wind u100

2010-04-14 Thread Beni Cherniavsky
Also affects me on Lucid alpha 2010-04-13 daily build (obtained by testdrive,
but testing on real hardware from USB drive).
Sound works perfectly in Karmic on this laptop (Msi Wind U100, ALC1200 codec).

Neither internal speaker nor headphones work.

Sound preferences detects Internal Audio 1 Output / 1 Input in Analog Stereo
Duplex mode.
But Input tab shows no cards and all controls are greyed out,
and Output tab shows only Dummy Output.

alsa-info.sh output at http://www.alsa-
project.org/db/?f=627a0bcabcf5d3887d8eb5663920cb1ae1473269

Interestingly, when I attached a USB audio (which works on karmic), it also
didn't work!
Hardware tab is listing a new audio headset.
But Input tab is still empty, and Output tab still shows only Dummy Output!

How should I proceed with testing?
- apport-collect? attach System Testing (Checkbox) report?
- install linux-backports-modules-alsa-2.6.32-20-generic and reboot?
[I also have hda_codec: ALC1200: BIOS auto-probing. in dmesg, but is this
advice still relevant?]
- provide any information for comparison from Karmic where it works OK?
- try newer Lucid image?
[is there an faster way to update a USB stick than Startup Disk Creator
again?]

[Bug 15495] Re: Archive Manager doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an archive is

2010-03-21 Thread Beni Cherniavsky
@Krzysztof Kosinski:
The simple user doesn't recognize the difference between
compression and archiving, because he has no use for
archiving. Why would anyone want to clump files together
if it offers no savings in disk space?

On the contrary, the simple user nowdays doesn't care about
file sizes and disk space, but does care about attaching a
dozen files to an email vs. attaching one archive.

(The ideal fix for that use case would be to support attaching
whole directories. They can be transparently converted to an
archive when you attach them and exploded to a directory
when you save an attachment. But this won't be ubuquitous
any time soon, so we still need an easy way to explicitly handle
archives.)

Anyway, I agree with your analysis of Compress... being best.

[Bug 15495] Re: Archive Manager doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an archive is

2009-12-01 Thread Beni Cherniavsky
+ Another word: pack seems to capture both meaning, while not exactly
stepping on package reserved for .debs?

+ What about expanding the vague meaning of the operation by labeling
the menu Combine / Compress...?

+ What about letting the option explain itself in a submenu? Something like:
  - Create file.tar.bz2
  - Create file.zip
  - Other / help me choose...

  Benefits:

  - A submenu header is less threatening than a Compress... button,
so it helps dicovery.

  - A submenu allows including the familiar ZIP.

  - A submenu allows fast access to common functionality. (Perhaps it
should grow to include formats you have used, a-la Open With?)

In any case, I think the real bug is that users don't understand these
operations, and playing with the wording can only help users stumble
upon the functionality. But will they successfully compelete their
task? With , will they understand what it does and whether they want
it? Will they choose the best format?

The current dialog looks like this:

ICON Filename: __file [ .tar.gz | ▽ ]
Location: [ places | ▽ ]
▷ Other Options
[Help] [Cancel] [Create]

(where Other Options expands to Password, Encrypt, Split - greyed out
most of the time!)

The harder part of the fix is re-designing the dialog to be educational!
It's a hard task, and I don't have a polished proposal, only a starting-point
suggestion:

  Save result as: __fileFormat:
  Location: [ places | ▽ ]┌───┐
   │ .zip - cross-platform │
  [x] Combine many files into one. │ .tar.bz2 - compress well │
   │...│
  [x] Compress - create a smaller file(s). └───┘
Without compression, Tar + BZip2 - very good
the files take 5.2 MB. compression, somewhat slow,
easy to open on Linux Mac.

   ▷ Other Options

  [Help] [Cancel] [Create]

[x] Combine would be greyed out if only one file is seleted. (Or entirely
omitted? I think educating users about the ability is important.)
When it's unselected, many files can be compressed individually (a message
warning of that should appear below the checkbox).

The [x] Combine and [x] Compress boxes would grey out irrelevant lines
in the formats list; clicking a line in the format list would assign [x]
Combine and [x] Compress to the appropriate values; typing an extension
in the filename output would also choose format and checkboxes.

Additionally, I'd argue that the [x] Compress section should also notify
you when you have selected uncompressed images / audio / videos, and at
least point you to the appropriate applications.

Ideally, it should allow you to directly:
- Compress losslessly to PNG and FLAC
- Compress lossly to JPG, Vorbis, Theora
- Reduce resulution / sampling rate

This is major new functionality, but it's very useful for sending/uploading
files, and it's part of what the user might expect from an option called
Compress
Instead of hiding behind but that's not what the word means I think we should
cover the meanings.

[Bug 296585] Re: Archive Mounter action should open mounted folder

2009-11-30 Thread Beni Cherniavsky
Ha? Still broken on a fresh install of Karmic [amd64], fully updated.
Archive mounter runs:
/usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-archive file=%s
This creates the mount, but doesn't open it in nautilus.

Nautilus does know that a new mount was created - it shows it in the sidebar.
One (correct?) fix would be for nautilus to automatically open a new window for
the mount, as it does for inserted media.

A simpler fix would be for Archive Mounter
(/usr/share/applications/mount-archive.desktop) to run:
nautilus archive://URL encoding of file://file
(probably needs a wrapper script to achive the correct encoding). This
triggers the mount automatically, and displays it in a new nautilus window.
[tested on .zip and .iso files]

[Bug 382703] Re: Home Folder has 3 different names

2009-11-26 Thread Beni Cherniavsky
I doubt 'Homme' in French makes sense. Home is a house, flat, not a
directory on a computer (which is inside of a home). 'Kuća' in Croatian
is also very... I said it already :)

By same logic:
I doubt 'Home' in English makes sense. Home is a house, flat, not a
directory on a computer (which is inside of a home).

What people frequently forget about silly-sounding translations of English
computer terms is that they are just as silly in English! Non-native English
speakers have just accepted their double normal/technical meaning
because they were foreign.

WRT to the bug, note that:
- GNOME puts a house emblem on the folder, so if you change the name,
you should also change the emblem.
- The filesystem has them under /home, and sooner or later may users are
exposed to that. Be careful of names like User Folder lest users look
  for it under /usr :-)
Renaming it for UI consistency risks users facing a bigger inconsistency
later.
(The real fix is renaming fixing FS names, like Mac OS X. But that's
controversial.)

Re: [Bug 475917] Re: [i945GME,nomodeset] mouse cursor invisible

2009-11-09 Thread Beni Cherniavsky
I discovered why one of the users was unaffacted upon login:
She had no ~/.config/monitors.xml file (where gnome-display-properties saves
it settings).
Once she manually used gnome-display-properties, the cursor started
disappeared,
and on her next login it was invisible.
After removing ~/.config/monitors.xml, her new logins have a cursor.

So a workaround to this bug is to never use gnome-display-properties, only
xrandr.
And rm ~/.config/monitors.xml if you have used it before.

I'm not sure if this bug should be marked as affecting
gnome-display-properties -
whatever resolution it requests, the video driver should still be
responsible for showing a cursor.

[Bug 475917] [NEW] [945GME,nomodeset] mouse cursor invisible

2009-11-05 Thread Beni Cherniavsky
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

It's a weird bug. I have quite specific situations and can easily reproduce it.
I don't know how to proceed to nail it down further, but would be happy to
follow instructions.

Steps to reproduce:
1. After boot (or login, or startx), mouse cursor is invisible. Moving the
mouse works - I see highlighting of things under the mouse and can click them,
but don't see the cursor.
2. After launching gnome-terminal, and pressing any key in it, moving the mouse
over the gnome-terminal window restores the cursor! This also works in
emacs-snapshot-gtk, but not in most other windows - not in xterm, nor in
firefox.
3. The mouse cursor also frequently becomes invisible after resolution
switching using Display Preferences. It happens approximately half the times,
but I haven't found a simple pattern. This does not happen when using xrandr
to switch resolutions on the command-line.

When the cursor is invisible, and 2 displays are active (LVDS - internal panel,
and VGA external display), it will only be invisble on one display, on the
other it can be seen. Sometimes it will be on the internal only, sometimes
external only.
When only one display is enabled (internal or external), it will be invisible
on that display.
Doing xrandr --auto to activate the second output (both overlapping starting
at (0,0)) will leave the cursor invisible on the original display and show it
on the other one.
[This resembles Bug #145186, but the symptoms here are more complicated.]

This started happening since ~beta6 of karmic, still happens on up-to-date
stable karmic.
It happened with only one out of 2 users on this system! I don't know the
reason for the difference.
I now created a fresh new user, and the bug does happen for the new user.

I'm not sure the problem is in the intel driver (user dependency seems
weird), but it doesn't occur with vesa driver.
I tried adding:
  Option HWCursor False
to xorg.conf, but the intel driver says it doesn't support it.

[Bug 445129] Re: [Karmic] USB Hotplugging Doesn't Work

2009-11-03 Thread Beni Cherniavsky
From karmic ~beta6, some USBs worked on plugging, some didn't.
Now (stable up-to-date karmic), nothing seems to work.
I tried now to (re)connect:
* Two disk-on-keys - didn't even appear in dmesg or lsusb.
* Disconnected and reconnected an external mouse (SIGMACH1P U+P) - nothing (or
only disconnect?) in dmesg, didn't re-appear in lsusb.
* Disconnected and reconnected an external keyboard (KEYBOARD USB KB) -
disconnect noted in dmesg and Xorg.0.log; nothing on connect, didn't re-appear
in lsusb.
* Tried netbook's Fn shortcuts to toggle webcam off and on (it sits on internal
USB) - nothing in dmesg (except unrecognized scancodes, but these messages also
appeared when the shortcuts did work in intrepid), webcam stayed listed in
lsusb the whole time.

Attaching lsusb -v, dmesg, Xord.0.log after the experiments.

there is also stuff in dmesg now (next attachment) about the failures of

[Bug 395932] Re: [i855] No Xv support for 82852/855GM (KMS bug)

2009-11-01 Thread Beni Cherniavsky
Previr, this seems interesting and important.
[mind you, I'm not a developer, just trying to push this bug along]

Can you also attach:
(1) the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(2) the output of the command: xvinfo

Downgrading a working system is tricky and painful.
I'd advice to wait for solution/workaround before you resort to that.

Meanwhile, best workaround I had before nomodeset solved Xv for me:
  mplayer -vm -vo x11 -framedrop
Be warned that -vm might sometimes switch to a low resolution and not restore
it :-(
  xrandr --auto
and
xrandr -s 1024x768 # or whatever you like
will be your friends then...

[Bug 395932] Re: [i855] No Xv support for 82852/855GM (KMS bug)

2009-11-01 Thread Beni Cherniavsky
Previr, could you also attach:
(1) the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(2) the output of the command: xvinfo

Downgrading is a somewhat painful, I recommend you wait a bit more for a
solution before resorting to that.
Meanwhile, a few tips for minimal-CPU playback:
(1) disable compiz (System→Preferences→Appearance→Desktop Effects) if it's
enabled.
(1) use:
mplayer -vm -vo x11 -framedrop movie file
be prepared that -vm might leave you with a bad resolution on exit;
if that happens, running:
xrandr --auto
or
xrandr -s 1024x768
(or whatever resolution you like) should help.

[sorry if this appears twice, it seems lauchpad ate my comment]

Re: [Bug 395932] Re: [i855] No Xv support for 82852/855GM (KMS bug)

2009-11-01 Thread Beni Cherniavsky
Indeed. Pervir - according to xvinfo you do have Xv working, so it's
a very different bug.

Xorg.0.log says Failed to pin xv buffer repeatedly,
which means you might have one of these bugs:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/371275
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/354688

If not, you'll have to file a new bug report.
Also include in that report the output of the video player, and how
exactly it fails to play.

2009-10-12 Thread Beni Cherniavsky
I'd like to add that this bug is quite critical - it makes OpenOffice
completely unacceptable for writing any RTL language!

At least in Hebrew, 2-letter words are very frequent (to, of, also,
you, them, etc.).
The layout switching constantly makes you discover that the last several words
were in English gibberish instead of Hebrew, which makes typing so slow that
you prefer to use any other application (and cut-and-paste in OO if you really
need it).

Bug still happens on bleeding edge ubuntu karmic (9.10).
Using openoffice.org 1:3.1.1-2ubuntu4 package version.

[Bug 431176] Re: karmic: gdm should not start in single user (recovery) mode

2009-10-08 Thread Beni Cherniavsky
If I understand the fix correctly, this is a bad idea.

It used to be, until recently (karmic bleeding edge), that I could boot the
recovery option,
do my stuff in single-user mode, and proceed to a graphical boot.
But now, not only GDM doesn't run by itself, running it manually appears to
have no effect!
I'm forced to reboot in normal mode to get GDM.

/etc/init/gdm.conf is the wrong place to do this decision.
It causes a manual start gdm to silently fail!

The correct way to not start gdm automatically would be to boot into a
different runlevel.
IIRC on debian runlevels 2 and 3 (?) don't include GDM.

And it's not clear that single-user recovery mode is a 1:1 indication that a
text-only mode is desired.
- If generally useful, it could be a (third?) option in the boot menu.
- If sometimes useful after recovery, the Resume normal boot menu option
could be split into
2 options: Resume normal graphical boot vs. Resume boot to text-only
login.
- If the motivating desire is convenience of recovery work with full-fledged
login,
maybe the recovery menu should be enhanced to offer many consoles, job
control etc.
(I got used to automatically start single-user work with several openvt
commands.)

[Bug 395932] Re: [i855] No Xv support for 82852/855GM (KMS bug)

2009-09-21 Thread Beni Cherniavsky
Also affects me with 945GME on Karmic (latest packages as of 2009-09-21,
2.6.31-10-generic kernel).
Worked before upgrade on Jaunty.

VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Problem went away when I added i915.modeset=0 nomodeset to kernel command
line.
Will try to apport-collect.

P.S. dmesg includes the line:

[0.00] Unknown boot option `i915.modeset=0': ignoring

so it's probably nomodeset that does the trick.
