[Bug 1790205] Re: systemd journals take up too much space, aren't vacuumed automatically
A month before the release of 18.04, a change was released to make systemd journals persistent, but the setting SystemMaxUse was left unset in /etc/systemd/journald.conf https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1618188 The bug's regression analysis seems wrong, as it states: "The journald daemon has limits set for logs, meaning they will be rotated and discarded and should not cause out of disk-space errors." It also seems likely that no testers of 18.04 would discover this issue, since it requires running out of disk space after having accumulated large systemd journals over time. The documentation is here: https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/journald.conf.html#SystemMaxUse= SystemKeepFree could be set, since it overrides the other values listed when the disk is running out of space. But I'm unsure, because if running out of disk space means that all the logs are silently truncated, then that is also a dangerous consequence on for instance a server where you could need logs to troubleshoot why disk space is running out... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1790205 Title: systemd journals take up too much space, aren't vacuumed automatically To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1790205/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1796474] [NEW] Traceback should be uncollapsed by default
Public bug reported: I'm reporting this in the role of a developer getting issue reports for non-Ubuntu projects. Apport could work great for this purpose, too, since it detects our system service's crashes. For us, the most valuable information is typically in the Traceback field (it's a Python application). However, when users are reporting back about problems, they tend to overlook that information. The attached screenshot came from an issue reported by a user. If we had been able to peek at the Traceback information, we might have immediately known the cause. To the user, this screenshot may seem to contain lots of information, but it doesn't contain anything specific, except for the version. I realize that there is a lot of UI stuff that could be tweaked, and that the old design specs haven't been fully implemented. [Bug 1483923] Re: dpkg-divert breaks nginx installation
Won't fix +1 Pre-Depends is really an easy work-around!! I see problems with dpkg-divert, but I also see work-arounds and room for discussions and improvements of individual packages. I don't think we need to say that "dpkg-divert" should be discouraged because of debian policy, nor do I see a need that we should require changes to packages that are functional because of diversions of configuration files by some other package. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1483923 Title: dpkg-divert breaks nginx installation To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nginx/+bug/1483923/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1483923] Re: dpkg-divert breaks nginx installation
Regarding the discussion about dpkg-divert: It's inevitable -- I wanna change something in nginx.conf that's not possible to change elsewhere because /etc/nginx/conf.d is only loaded in the http { ... } segment: 2015/11/11 22:29:32 [emerg] 15102#0: "worker_processes" directive is not allowed here in /etc/nginx/conf.d/test.conf:1 I see the point of avoiding it, but it demands changes in the original package to allow other packages to avoid modifying its configuration files.. but it's almost the same problem with user-defined modifications. There should always be room for both these cases. Agreed, no need to patch this in Ubuntu. Should be done in Debian, which I can see would have the same problem. [Bug 1483923] Re: dpkg-divert breaks nginx installation
@Thomas Ward Firstly, a correction: 14.04 also has the issue, I was looking at the wrong file ( http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/trusty/nginx/trusty/view/head:/debian/nginx-core.postinst is correct ) Let me try to summarize the issue a little better: You have a package, johnny-dep, and it depends on nginx johnny-dep has `dpkg-divert /etc/nginx/nginx.conf` in its preinst script When we install johnny-dep, nginx will also be installed. What happens is this: 1) johnny-dep adds the diversion, now there is no file /etc/nginx/nginx.conf 2) nginx installs, but during its configuration it exits because there's no /etc/nginx/nginx.conf -- Meanwhile, I found this work-around/solution: I listed nginx in "Pre-Depends" in my debian/control, thus nginx will run its postinst script before johnny-dep's preinst script is run. If this is enough to consider this a non-bug, that's acceptable. Maybe I disagree a little bit that nginx doesn't work conventionally with a diversion of its configuration file, but on the other hand, it's not very severe.

[Bug 497151] Re: /etc/nullmailer/remotes file contains string "mail." by default causing incessant DNS requests that fail.
I would like to suggest reopening this innocent looking bug report :) ...and configure nullmailer with a default of not connecting to anything. Instead, it should simply discard mails. That is much more sane and to be expected from a fresh installation. Guessing a remote mail server on a workstation (99% of all Ubuntu installations?) is not the way forward, and since nullmailer does NOT have a way of detecting permanent connection errors, it will just continue filling up /var/spool/nullmailer/queue and /var/log/mail.err*. And since the root user does not necessarily map to the correct user account and null mailer may not know who to send emails to, anyways, the whole idea of guessing a remote relay is terrible. For instance, after a couple of upgrades, I somehow had php looking for a dynamic library that did not exist. This ended up at 1.5 GB of mail queue and mail.err logs and probably millions of failed DNS lookups. I think it's pretty severe to have a default configuration run amok like that. I have been flooding DNS servers for months because of this. For the record, I did once empty /etc/nullmailer/remotes and now "mail." is back, presumably after an update. [Bug 1036114] [NEW] (usability) Apport dialog asks a question that user has no way of answering
Public bug reported: Hey there! This is roughly how the flow went as something unknown in my system just crashed: 1) "System crash detected" 2) I say that I want to report it and to know the details. 3) Apport says that "precise" is no longer in development, and therefore I have to choose between 5 options. Now, one could object to these options being difficult to distinguish between - but that is NOT what this is about. It's even more fundamental: Even as a tech user, I am not prepared to answer the question, because Apport still hasn't told me anything about the error. Is it just the same usual error? Is it a program that I know how to debug? Users need to see the problem and the debug output before deciding what to do. ** Affects: apport (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1036114 Title: (usability) Apport dialog asks a question that user has no way of answering To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apport/+bug/1036114/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 966744] Re: Resume from suspend leaves me with black screen or a screen of the desktop before it suspended (though the mouse still moves/changes cursor)
This is a hard nut to crack :D If someone needs a quick run-down of the most important findings, I think this will do OP as well as many others are talking about suspend/resume, and many point to intel drivers and compiz... BUT: #33, #34 says it's related to closing the lid. #52 and #94 says the problem occurs also in Unity 2D. #76 says problem doesn't occur when using suspend button, rather than closing the lid. #78 says it's an Intel bug (but many nvidia users in here also) #84 says it's definately related to open/close of laptop lid. #85 says the bug occurs without using the lid. #99 never uses suspend and experiences it with BOTH lock on and off. #108 says plugging and unplugging an external screen causes the same issue. #127 says that "do nothing" upon closing the lid would always reproduce only until selecting different option and then back to "do nothing". #142 says that simply locking the screen triggers the problem. #143 says it happens simply when returning to a blank screen -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/966744 Title: Resume from suspend leaves me with black screen or a screen of the desktop before it suspended (though the mouse still moves/changes cursor) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/966744/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 828172] Re: Overlay scrollbars are invisible against a selected element
Same problem in both Ambiance and Radiance. May I suggest the following solutions: * Make a colour difference so the marker is clearly visible, even on top of a highlighted panel element. * Make a margin between the highlighted panel element and the scroll bar. * Ditch the puny scrollbar and make a solid and visible one. [Bug 1022832] Re: "Important Security Updates" not in visible area
I now know how to reproduce it... When there are more than 4 Important Security Updates. If you see the headline by default, then there's something different. I don't. What you can do to force the situation: Scroll down using the arrow-keys. Just press it until you see the headline disappear. Then press it 4 positions back up. As #3 and #4 mentions, the highlighting uses the same solid color as the scroll bar indicator, thus rendering the scrollbar invisible. There are two parts. 1) Fix Update Manager so the scroll pane is initially at the top, exposing the headline. 2) Ambience bug: The marker should not be able to render the scrollbar invisible. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1022832 Title: "Important Security Updates" not in visible area To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/1022832/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 887793] Re: Kworker constantly taking about 100% CPU
Confirmed. I suspended my computer after vacuuming my room and updating Ubuntu 11.10 (don't remember the order, but there were no kernel updates involved). After that, the kworker/* processes started occurring. They halt and block keyboard and mouse input at random intervals (like every 10 seconds). It's not a freeze, I think it's the kernel interrupt scheduler ignoring stuff such as mouse/keyboard/screen. /etc/init.d/networking restart does not work. Disabling the NetworkManager works, all kworker processes disappear. "/etc/init.d/networking stop" works, but it (accidentally) killed NetworkManager and my theme manager so now everything looks like 2001 and I cannot start nm-applet. "dhclient eth0" does not work (the eth0 interface seems absolutely dead) I restarted my computer and the problem persisted. Then I did "ifconfig eth0 down" and it went away. And doing "ifconfig eth0 up" brings the kworker madness back. Therefore I this problem is related to the ethernet module. I'm also running T61 like #14 but it's not 64 bit, it's i386. The bug is confirmed and the workaround is well-known. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1037515 -- Unable to retrieve MSN Address Book https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/316252 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 297890] Re: on photo capture cheese blanks the screen until logout
Cheese -v doesn't yield any output. Should I recompile with debugging enabled? ** Attachment added: "Output from lsusb and lsmod" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/20726518/lsmod_and_lsusb.out -- on photo capture cheese blanks the screen until logout https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/297890 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 297890] Re: on photo capture cheese blanks the screen until logout
I have the same problem. The white flash stays, so the screen goes all white. Cheese doesn't freeze.. it just paints the screen all white. Doesn't react on alt+f4, though, because the white area takes focus. Alt+tab shows the window switcher but is unable to switch away from the white area. There are two workarounds: 1) Switch to a different workspace and open a terminal to do killall cheese. The picture will be saved. 2) Press [space] instead of using the mouse. The flash works fine when you don't use the mouse to click Take Photo. [Bug 129383] Re: Slow CD ripping (Sound Juicer)
Tried searchingGoogle and Fedora bugzilla. The bug doesn't seem to affect anything but Ubuntu. Can someone experiencing the problem please confirm if it's also a problem on other distros? Same problem here. Ripping a cd with ruby-ripper and sound-juicer takes about an hour. However encoding is fast and regular reading shows no problems. [Bug 132611] Re: Crash of installer when partitioning - "dont_use" filesystem
It looks like the installer is working because no errors are thrown and it's fully functional (pressing Cancel gives me a modal dialog right away). [Bug 127553] Re: [gutsy] rhythmbox doesn't play wma files
I can't play WMA with crossfading enabled and that's absolutely persistent. 1) Play a WMA file without crossfading enabled. It works, right? 2) Enable crossfading. Restart Rhythmbox. 3) Play a WMA file. Now it doesn't play, but other files work. Can others confirm? [Bug 39073] Re: nvidia driver doesn't work at latest upgrade
I did an "apt-get remove linux-restricted-modules-386" followed by ""apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-386" effectively reinstalling the restricted modules, which fixed my problem (X complained that it couldn't load the nvidia kernel module).
