[Bug 1790205] Re: systemd journals take up a lot of space, and it's not obvious how much is used, and what the upper limit is.

2020-07-16 Thread Benjamin Bach
Same issue on Bionic, installed May 15 (2 months ago):

➜ ~ sudo journalctl --disk-usage
Archived and active journals take up 4.1G in the file system.

My logs are definitely clogged with endless JavaScript errors from
gnome-shell. Something I would not expect to slowly consume all disk
space.

What could be helpful feedback for this issue?

[Bug 1531184] Re: [SRU] dnsmasq doesn't start on boot because its interface isn't up yet

2019-09-24 Thread Benjamin Bach
Adding to my previous message: After=NetworkManager-wait-online.service
will not work, as it doesn't respect for instance setups where networkd
handles connections.

@Robie Basak

> Will this delay boot for laptop users who are offline, for example?

If someone has installed the dnsmasq package with the dnsmasq.service
file, they already intend to run this as a network-dependent service?
It's not part of a normal user's setup - I think they have dnsmasq-base,
which doesn't include the service.

dnsmasq-base:

> This package contains the dnsmasq executable and documentation, but
not the infrastructure required to run it as a system daemon. For that,
install the dnsmasq package.

Issue has a patch, so wondering: What are the decision criteria for
bringing the patch into 18.04, perhaps backports? Does it have to happen
upstream (through persuasion of Gnome devs)?

[Bug 1531184] Re: [SRU] dnsmasq doesn't start on boot because its interface isn't up yet

2019-09-22 Thread Benjamin Bach
The fix by Terrence Houlahan works for me on 18.04. Thanks!

However, I'm wondering if adding this "After" clause is a problem since
the package doesn't currently depend on Network Manager? Does
"NetworkManager-wait-online.service" satisfy a more generic SystemD
target?

2019-07-15 Thread Benjamin Bach
This is also the same in the Cosmic, Disco and Eoan builds.

It's that CODENAME is defined wrongly in debian/rules - could it be that
builds got copied directly from Artful instead of being rebuilt for each
target dist?

[Bug 1775592] Re: git delete-branch did not work in case the called git config fails

2018-10-12 Thread Benjamin Bach
Confirmed and quite annoying.

Yup, I've successfully built 4.6.0 after a uupdate on the current 4.5.0
released with Bionic. It fixes the problem.

There are other bug fixes in 4.6.0:

https://github.com/tj/git-extras/releases/tag/4.6.0

Since upstream Debian has already packaged 4.6.0, can we just pull that into
the Bionic repo?

[Bug 1790205] Re: systemd journals take up too much space, aren't vacuumed automatically

2018-10-06 Thread Benjamin Bach
A month before the release of 18.04, a change was released to make
systemd journals persistent, but the setting SystemMaxUse was left unset
in /etc/systemd/journald.conf

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1618188

The bug's regression analysis seems wrong, as it states: "The journald
daemon has limits set for logs, meaning they will be rotated and
discarded and should not cause out of disk-space errors."

It also seems likely that no testers of 18.04 would discover this issue,
since it requires running out of disk space after having accumulated
large systemd journals over time.

The documentation is here:

https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/journald.conf.html#SystemMaxUse=

SystemKeepFree could be set, since it overrides the other values listed
when the disk is running out of space. But I'm unsure, because if
running out of disk space means that all the logs are silently
truncated, then that is also a dangerous consequence on for instance a
server where you could need logs to troubleshoot why disk space is
running out...

[Bug 1796474] [NEW] Traceback should be uncollapsed by default

2018-10-06 Thread Benjamin Bach
Public bug reported:

I'm reporting this in the role of a developer getting issue reports for
non-Ubuntu projects. Apport could work great for this purpose, too,
since it detects our system service's crashes.

For us, the most valuable information is typically in the Traceback
field (it's a Python application).

However, when users are reporting back about problems, they tend to
overlook that information.

The attached screenshot came from an issue reported by a user. If we had
been able to peek at the Traceback information, we might have
immediately known the cause.

To the user, this screenshot may seem to contain lots of information,
but it doesn't contain anything specific, except for the version.

I realize that there is a lot of UI stuff that could be tweaked, and
that the old design specs haven't been fully implemented. But hoping
this issue is so minor to fix that it might pass :)

Thanks!

[Bug 1790294] [NEW] Tools=>Bibliography launches Software Centre but fails to find "libreoffice-base" package

2018-09-01 Thread Benjamin Bach
Public bug reported:

Selecting Tools=>Bibliography in LibreOffice Writer will ask for missing
software to be installed. After this, Software Centre will say that
"libreoffice-base" couldn't be found.

I am not sure if the cause of this issue is in the way that Software
Centre is invoked?

The package libreoffice-base exists and can be installed with "apt
install libreoffice-base", after which using the Bibliography tool works
fine.

[Bug 1790205] [NEW] systemd journals take up too much space, aren't vacuumed automatically

2018-08-31 Thread Benjamin Bach
Public bug reported:

After running Bionic for 3 months, I had 2.6 GB of journals.

I would not expect from a normal desktop user that they should have to
run commands like `sudo journalctl --vacuum-time=10d`.

I would nominate this command as a sane default to have running at each
reboot to ensure that logs do not exceed 500 MB:

sudo journalctl --vacuum-size=500M

Supposedly, a server should by default retain more logs, so perhaps this
should be implemented through a configuration package "systemd-
configuration-desktop" as a dependency of the ubuntu-desktop meta
package?

[Bug 1648806] Re: Arbitrary code execution through crafted CrashDB or Package/Source fields in .crash files

2016-12-16 Thread Benjamin Bach
Question:

The release notes state: "Use ast.literal_eval() instead of the generic
eval(), to prevent arbitrary code execution from malicious .crash files"

The change should be in ui.py in this revision:

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~apport-hackers/apport/trunk/revision/3114

Just to be clear: How does "self.offer_restart = True" avoid generic
"eval()" and use "ast.literal_eval()" instead?

Does this also mean that there are still situations where "eval()" is
called? And why? This always leads to security issues, it's just a
matter of time.

Thanks for fixing it quickly.

[Bug 1631859] Re: brightness, contrast, quality for Canon LIDE 60 ill defined

2016-11-25 Thread Benjamin Bach
I can confirm this bug on 16.04 with Lide 60.

Is it a bug in SANE or simple-scan?

Can anyone with another scanner (driver) quickly add if they are *not*
experiencing this?

[Bug 1450287] Re: dput hard-codes path to gpg binary

A work-around is to convert your gpg2 keyring (pubring.kbx) to a gpg
(pubring.gpg) keyring and store it in your gpg home dir (~/.gnupg/).

[Bug 1577198] Re: Imported gpg keys do not show up in Seahorse 3.18.0

2016-09-06 Thread Benjamin Bach
I agree, this was a very annoying bug as there are no error messages.
Keys are just missing, and importing the old pubring.gpg through both
Seahorse and Enigmail interfaces doesn't work.

The "bug" also affects Enigmail.

There is a nice description here regarding how to export your old
pubring.gpg to pubring.kbx, retaining owner trust:

[Bug 1457353] Re: Software Updater freezes when trying to upgrade grub-pc package

2015-12-02 Thread Benjamin Bach
I would think the issue is related to the debconf of grub-pc -- Brian,
if you still have the test ready to run, try clearing the debconf of
grub-pc (or related package) before upgrading the package. Something
like:

echo "purge" | sudo -E debconf-communicate grub-pc

As a general rule, Update Manager and Ubuntu Software Center have
problems when libgtk2-perl isn't installed and debconf needs a frontend.
Either the problem is about frozen UI or it's about critical answers or
information not being displayed.

[Bug 1389582] Re: software-center misses a dependency on libgtk2-perl

2015-11-15 Thread Benjamin Bach
It seems that there are also cases where update-manager freezes when
libgtk2-perl is not installed. I can confirm this has just happened
during the grub-pc upgrade on 14.04.2

This process got stuck:

"/usr/bin/perl -w /usr/share/debconf/frontend /var/lib/dpkg/info/grub-
pc.postinst configure 2.02~beta2-9ubuntu1.3"

Running "apt-get install -f" from terminal after killing the frozen
process fixes the issue.

Related bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-
upgrader/+bug/1457353

I would think that libgtk2-perl should also be a dependency of update-
manager?

[Bug 1483923] Re: dpkg-divert breaks nginx installation

2015-11-11 Thread Benjamin Bach
Won't fix +1

Pre-Depends is really an easy work-around!!

I see problems with dpkg-divert, but I also see work-arounds and room
for discussions and improvements of individual packages. I don't think
we need to say that "dpkg-divert" should be discouraged because of
debian policy, nor do I see a need that we should require changes to
packages that are functional because of diversions of configuration
files by some other package.

[Bug 1483923] Re: dpkg-divert breaks nginx installation

2015-11-11 Thread Benjamin Bach
Regarding the discussion about dpkg-divert: It's inevitable -- I wanna
change something in nginx.conf that's not possible to change elsewhere
because /etc/nginx/conf.d is only loaded in the http { ... } segment:

2015/11/11 22:29:32 [emerg] 15102#0: "worker_processes" directive is not
allowed here in /etc/nginx/conf.d/test.conf:1

I see the point of avoiding it, but it demands changes in the original
package to allow other packages to avoid modifying its configuration
files.. but it's almost the same problem with user-defined
modifications. There should always be room for both these cases.

Agreed, no need to patch this in Ubuntu. Should be done in Debian, which
I can see would have the same problem.

But it seems it will be hard to find consensus about whether such things
should be addressed or not!

I don't know what to make of all this :) I guess there are many
discussions about how to do things, but the Debian Wiki suggests to put
things in preinst, which then makes everything diversion a "conceptual
pre-depends".

[Bug 1483923] Re: dpkg-divert breaks nginx installation

2015-09-13 Thread Benjamin Bach
@Thomas Ward
Firstly, a correction: 14.04 also has the issue, I was looking at the wrong
file (
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/trusty/nginx/trusty/view/head:/debian/nginx-core.postinst
 is correct )

Let me try to summarize the issue a little better:

You have a package, johnny-dep, and it depends on nginx
johnny-dep has `dpkg-divert /etc/nginx/nginx.conf` in its preinst script

When we install johnny-dep, nginx will also be installed. What happens
is this:

1) johnny-dep adds the diversion, now there is no file /etc/nginx/nginx.conf
2) nginx installs, but during its configuration it exits because there's no
/etc/nginx/nginx.conf

--

Meanwhile, I found this work-around/solution:

I listed nginx in "Pre-Depends" in my debian/control, thus nginx will
run its postinst script before johnny-dep's preinst script is run.

If this is enough to consider this a non-bug, that's acceptable. Maybe I
disagree a little bit that nginx doesn't work conventionally with a
diversion of its configuration file, but on the other hand, it's not
very severe.

[Bug 1483923] Re: dpkg-divert breaks nginx installation

2015-08-11 Thread Benjamin Bach
I'm going to take a wild guess that the issue is because vivid's nginx-
common.postinst has this line:

invoke-rc.d nginx start || exit $?

Which will make postinst fail if nginx fails to start for the first
time.

15.04:

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-
branches/ubuntu/vivid/nginx/vivid/view/head:/debian/nginx-core.postinst

14.04 did not have this behaviour:

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-

common.postinst

[Bug 1483923] [NEW] dpkg-divert breaks nginx installation

2015-08-11 Thread Benjamin Bach
Public bug reported:

On 14.04, adding a divert for /etc/nginx/nginx.conf would have the
package installation and configuration proceed after installing with
just one error:

Setting up nginx-common (1.4.6-1ubuntu3.3) ...
Processing triggers for ufw (0.34~rc-0ubuntu2) ...
Processing triggers for ureadahead (0.100.0-16) ...
Setting up nginx-core (1.4.6-1ubuntu3.3) ...
cat: /etc/nginx/nginx.conf: No such file or directory
Setting up nginx (1.4.6-1ubuntu3.3) ...

But then after, it would setup the package with the diversion and then
start the nginx service.

On 15.04, nginx is started during an earlier step, failing to configure
nginx and then dropping out in an un-configured state.

Is this an issue with the way that ngnix configures itself or an issue
with running dpkg-divert in the third-party package's preinst script?

[Bug 1272870] Re: No context pane plugin for rhythmbox installation (Trusty/Utopic/Vivid)

Confirming that these very simple patches do their job. The "rhythmbox-
plugins_3.0.2-0ubuntu2_*" package is now correctly rebuild so that the
context pane plugin is installed once again.

Patch #1 (rhythmbox-plugins.install)

I would definitely say that this should be added back in 14.04, it's a
big miss IMO.

The Context Pane is also still missing in Vivid and Utopic.

Patch #2 (control.in)

We can perhaps do without While installing rhythmbox-plugins as a
dependency is nice, it may be too nice as it makes it impossible to
remove rhythmbox-plugins without also removing rhythmbox.

Patches look fine, any reason not to merge the first one? I guess it's
debatable whether rhythmbox-plugins should be a dependency or a
recommendation, but most definitely, the context panel is missing from

On a related note, recent changes to trusty's rhythmbox include:

[Bug 1304702] [NEW] update-manager fails because of postgresql-server-dev-9.1

2014-04-08 Thread Benjamin Bach
Public bug reported:

After removing the package, it works.

The cause of the problem was found by fetching the log output using
"ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core" but I think it's problematic
that none of the upgrading tools show the cause of the problem when it's
known...

Cheers,

[Bug 1273482] [NEW] ID3 / Vorbis tags missing data

2014-01-27 Thread Benjamin Bach
Public bug reported:

I've had a look around my music library, and I'm unable to find a single
file with "Year" appearing correctly. This is both regarding metadata
displayed in Nautilus and in Rhythmbox. I presume that they both use the
gstreamer id3tag demuxer to gather this information.

Steps to reproduce:

Open Nautilus, right-click an mp3 file with a Year tag.

Expected result:

Year: (some correct Year)

Actual result:

Year: Unknown

It's the same both on MP3 and OGG/Vorbis (vorbistag is in gst-plugins-
base, right?).

*) All data appears correctly in for instance EasyTag.

[Bug 1241573] Re: thunderbird crashed with SIGSEGV

2014-01-07 Thread Benjamin Bach
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1236351 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1236351

I have tried debugging. My traceback from "thunderbird --debug" is
pretty useless, so this is my experience + a seemingly fine workaround.

I'm under the impression that the rest of the Thunderbird community does
not experience this issues since there's no talk of it. However, since
switching to 13.10 I've had segmentation faults CONSTANTLY. I'm using
gnome-shell btw. I can mention at least 3 different things that have a
50-100% chance of crashing Thunderbird.

I tried disabling all extensions, no luck.

I tried also to disble all plugins systematically.

Finally, I found the culprit. So my solution/workaround is:

Tools -> Add-ons  -> Plugins -> Gnome Shell Integration -> DISABLE

After this, I haven't seen the usual crashes, only a few "Program
received signal SIGPIPE, Broken pipe." which seem to not kill the mail
process.

Can other reporters perhaps state if they are seeing an improvement from
disabling the Gnome Shell Integration?

[Bug 1031449] Re: rhythmbox leaking memory

2013-05-23 Thread Benjamin Bach
Dear package maintainers -- please be our heroes and fix this :)

Memory leaks were fixed in Rhythmbox 2.97 and 2.98 as noted in #976534.
I'm currently running RB 2.97 from ubuntuupdates.org and it works
without leaks.

This was my result before:

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND
28905 username 20 0 1978m 1.4g 15m S 39 35.4 33:44.59 rhythmbox

This is my result using the webupd8team PPA:

10545 username 20 0 550m 103m 20m S4 2.6 52:17.58 rhythmbox

As you can see, even after running for almost twice as long, it uses
only 2.6% memory, and before it was sipping some 35%.

The following upstream report mentions a lot of commits with memory leak
fixes -- perhaps they could be targeted for backporting.

[Bug 497151] Re: /etc/nullmailer/remotes file contains string "mail." by default causing incessant DNS requests that fail.

2013-03-09 Thread Benjamin Bach
I would like to suggest reopening this innocent looking bug report :)

...and configure nullmailer with a default of not connecting to
anything. Instead, it should simply discard mails. That is much more
sane and to be expected from a fresh installation.

Guessing a remote mail server on a workstation (99% of all Ubuntu
installations?) is not the way forward, and since nullmailer does NOT
have a way of detecting permanent connection errors, it will just
continue filling up /var/spool/nullmailer/queue and /var/log/mail.err*.

And since the root user does not necessarily map to the correct user
account and null mailer may not know who to send emails to, anyways, the
whole idea of guessing a remote relay is terrible.

For instance, after a couple of upgrades, I somehow had php looking for
a dynamic library that did not exist. This ended up at 1.5 GB of mail
queue and mail.err logs and probably millions of failed DNS lookups. I
think it's pretty severe to have a default configuration run amok like
that. I have been flooding DNS servers for months because of this.

For the record, I did once empty /etc/nullmailer/remotes and now "mail."
is back, presumably after an update.

Upstream bug:
https://github.com/bruceg/nullmailer/issues/1

Google search reveals that the issue is quite common and has cause severe
troubles for many. I can only imagine that this is costing loads of traffic and
disk space...

[Bug 1036114] Re: (usability) Apport dialog asks a question that user has no way of answering

2012-08-22 Thread Benjamin Bach
This is the current flow

Crash -> Ask user the above dialog -> Show info about crash

It should be

Crash -> Show info about crash -> Ask the user about what to do

Do you have a quick shortcut for a (preferably harmless) crash that will
trigger Apport so I can click around and get to terms with the current
setup?

2012-08-14 Thread Benjamin Bach
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 828172 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/828172

I suggest going with the light-themes bug, because most essentially the
reason why a user does not see "Important Security Updates" is that the
scroll bar widget has visually merged with the background.

I hope that someone /also/ will make the Update Manager scroll its
update list to the top for its initial state! That's hopefully a very
easy thing...

[Bug 1036114] [NEW] (usability) Apport dialog asks a question that user has no way of answering

2012-08-13 Thread Benjamin Bach
Public bug reported:

Hey there!

This is roughly how the flow went as something unknown in my system just
crashed:

1) "System crash detected"
2) I say that I want to report it and to know the details.
3) Apport says that "precise" is no longer in development, and therefore I have
to choose between 5 options.

Now, one could object to these options being difficult to distinguish
between - but that is NOT what this is about.

It's even more fundamental: Even as a tech user, I am not prepared to
answer the question, because Apport still hasn't told me anything about
the error.

Is it just the same usual error? Is it a program that I know how to
debug?

Users need to see the problem and the debug output before deciding what
to do.

[Bug 966744] Re: Resume from suspend leaves me with black screen or a screen of the desktop before it suspended (though the mouse still moves/changes cursor)

2012-08-10 Thread Benjamin Bach
This is a hard nut to crack :D If someone needs a quick run-down of the
most important findings, I think this will do

OP as well as many others are talking about suspend/resume, and many
point to intel drivers and compiz... BUT:

#33, #34 says it's related to closing the lid.

#52 and #94 says the problem occurs also in Unity 2D.

#76 says problem doesn't occur when using suspend button, rather than
closing the lid.

#78 says it's an Intel bug (but many nvidia users in here also)

#84 says it's definately related to open/close of laptop lid.

#85 says the bug occurs without using the lid.

#99 never uses suspend and experiences it with BOTH lock on and off.

#108 says plugging and unplugging an external screen causes the same
issue.

#127 says that "do nothing" upon closing the lid would always reproduce
only until selecting different option and then back to "do nothing".

#142 says that simply locking the screen triggers the problem.

#143 says it happens simply when returning to a blank screen

[Bug 828172] Re: Overlay scrollbars are invisible against a selected element

2012-08-01 Thread Benjamin Bach
Same problem in both Ambiance and Radiance.

May I suggest the following solutions:

* Make a colour difference so the marker is clearly visible, even on top
of a highlighted panel element.

* Make a margin between the highlighted panel element and the scroll
bar.

* Ditch the puny scrollbar and make a solid and visible one. This would
be an over-all improvement, as the scrollbar is often way too invisible.
Some applications like Firefox and Thunderbird have their own
scrollbars, even though using native widgets?

[Bug 1022832] Re: "Important Security Updates" not in visible area

2012-08-01 Thread Benjamin Bach
I now know how to reproduce it...

When there are more than 4 Important Security Updates. If you see the
headline by default, then there's something different. I don't.

What you can do to force the situation:

Scroll down using the arrow-keys. Just press it until you see the
headline disappear. Then press it 4 positions back up. As #3 and #4
mentions, the highlighting uses the same solid color as the scroll bar
indicator, thus rendering the scrollbar invisible.

There are two parts.

1) Fix Update Manager so the scroll pane is initially at the top, exposing the
headline.
2) Ambience bug: The marker should not be able to render the scrollbar
invisible.

[Bug 42178] Re: apt-get doesn't use the same pinning as synaptic

2012-05-11 Thread Benjamin Bach
This is very confusing. It is not clearly mentioned that locking a
package in Synaptic does not lock it in dpkg.

How to properly lock/freeze/hold a package:

echo "package-name hold" | dpkg --set-selection

How to release a package for updates:

echo "package-name install" | dpkg --set-selection

Why can synaptic not simply invoke the same interface? Is it because it
locks the package database? And if so, then I think Synaptic should be
liable to also lock packages properly.

[Bug 991899] Re: list of online videos is not mine

2012-04-30 Thread Benjamin Bach
Thanks, I think some attention has to be paid to the benefits of such
default features. First of all, there are the deamons, and then secondly
there's the problem of slower loading of the Dash menus.

unity-lens-video: 5.6 MiB
unity-music-daemon: 11.2 MiB
unity-musicstore-daemon: 572 KiB
unity-files-daemon: 1.7 MiB
unity-applications-daemon: 3.9 MiB

In total: 22.9 MiB

Also I notice CPU load, which shows that for instance the music daemon
is quite a problem.

ps axo pcpu, pmem, comm | grep unity

 2553 1 0.0 0.2 unity-applicati
 2553 1 0.0 0.1 unity-files-dae
 2553 1 0.0 0.3 unity-lens-vide
 2553 1 0.0 0.0 unity-musicstor
 2553 1 0.0 0.3 unity-scope-vid
 2553 1 0.9 0.4 unity-music-dae

Is it relevant with this sort of discussion on the mailing list? Or have
I missed out on previous ones? :)

[Bug 991899] [NEW] list of online videos is not mine

2012-04-30 Thread Benjamin Bach
Public bug reported:

When I open Dash -> Videos, the list of Online videos is not mine. I
have never seen them before, and no one has been using my computer
except me :)

Maybe a developer commited his own data? Maybe I just don't understand
the logic of the default data?

Anyways, why not just remove the thing / make it a non-default option?
It's bloat that takes up resources.

[Bug 876626] Re: Unlocking the second crypto disk (/home) echos password on console

2012-02-08 Thread Benjamin Bach
@ilf: I would suggest a bit less sarcasm and a bit more encouragement
for hard-working volunteer programmers!

Is it possible that some other process is receiving the keyboard inputs
and echoing them back? I'm thinking this because typing in a password
for the swap partition only echoes *s -- but later inputs will trigger
the echoing of the actual characters.

[Bug 887793] Re: Kworker constantly taking about 100% CPU

2011-12-22 Thread Benjamin Bach
As mentioned, once I do "ifconfig eth0 down", the problems stop. Once I
do "ifconfig eth0 up", they start again.

powertop reports between:

99.2 ms/s 0.0kWork e1000_watchdog_task
and
393.2 ms/s 0.1kWork e1000_watchdog_task

While the network interface is completely idle (well, it doesn't work)!

The curious thing is that it used to work but it has broken recently in
Ubuntu 11.10.

Btw, please see #779753 - a probably related bug.

[Bug 887793] Re: Kworker constantly taking about 100% CPU

2011-12-20 Thread Benjamin Bach
Confirmed. I suspended my computer after vacuuming my room and updating
Ubuntu 11.10 (don't remember the order, but there were no kernel updates
involved). After that, the kworker/* processes started occurring. They
halt and block keyboard and mouse input at random intervals (like every
10 seconds). It's not a freeze, I think it's the kernel interrupt
scheduler ignoring stuff such as mouse/keyboard/screen.

/etc/init.d/networking restart does not work.

Disabling the NetworkManager works, all kworker processes disappear.

"/etc/init.d/networking stop" works, but it (accidentally) killed
NetworkManager and my theme manager so now everything looks like 2001
and I cannot start nm-applet.

"dhclient eth0" does not work (the eth0 interface seems absolutely dead)

I restarted my computer and the problem persisted.

Then I did "ifconfig eth0 down" and it went away. And doing "ifconfig
eth0 up" brings the kworker madness back.

Therefore I this problem is related to the ethernet module. I'm also
running T61 like #14 but it's not 64 bit, it's i386. My ethernet is:
00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82566MM Gigabit Network
Connection (rev 03)

[Bug 905355] [NEW] Never let users save in /tmp

2011-12-16 Thread Benjamin Bach
Public bug reported:

When you download something and choose to open it in LibreOffice, it
will be saved in /tmp. If you choose Save As, the default saving
location will be in /tmp.

I just lost a partly written exam that way. I thought it was on my
Desktop, but oh no, it was in /tmp and after rebooting it's now gone.

The suggestion is to NEVER let /tmp be the default folder in the Save
dialog, and to ALWAYS warn the user if saving something there.

[Bug 240736] Re: Firefox maximized under/over panels after screen size/xrandr changes

2009-03-25 Thread Benjamin Bach
I run 1024x768 and have exactly this issue. After playing around in
localstore.rdf I found that these lines should be changed:

Into these:

Which somehow fixed it. Apparently setting the width+height to a value
too high (for instance the exact screen resolution) indirectly causes
the issue. I don't know what the real problem is.

You probably need to add and edit ~/.netrc

In the file, you should put hostname, username and password like this:

servername domain.com
username foo
password bar

I had the same issue. It's not a bug, just something that's pretty
badly documented and seems to have caused people a lot of headaches.

[Bug 297890] Re: on photo capture cheese blanks the screen until logout

2008-12-21 Thread Benjamin Bach
I have the same problem. The white flash stays, so the screen goes all
white. Cheese doesn't freeze.. it just paints the screen all white.
Doesn't react on alt+f4, though, because the white area takes focus.
Alt+tab shows the window switcher but is unable to switch away from the
white area.

There are two workarounds:

1) Switch to a different workspace and open a terminal to do killall cheese.
The picture will be saved.
2) Press [space] instead of using the mouse. The flash works fine when you
don't use the mouse to click Take Photo.

Others having the same problem:

My webcam uses the gspca_ov519 module. My desktop effects are on default
settings. Please tell me what else you need.
