[Bug 991652] [NEW] Must run gpsbabel (gebabbel) as root to access Garmin usb:

2012-04-29 Thread Blown2bits
Public bug reported:

In order for gpsbabel to save gps data from a Garmin device (usb:),
gpsbabel must be run as root.

Steps to reproduce problem:
1. Install gebabbel (includes gpsbabel).
2. Connect Garmin gps (in my case, a Garmin GPS 60)
3. Start gebabbel from console with: gebabbel
4. Make sure In Type is garmin, and In From is usb:
5. Save as gpx, ~/Desktop/GarminWaypoint.gpx

Note error from gpsbabel (through gebabbel dialog box):
Claim interfaced failed: could not claim interface 0: Operation not permitted
Also, note that output file does not exist.

Now:
1. Start gebabbel as root from console with: sudo gebabbel
2. Repeat steps 4 and 5 above.

Note that output file exists and data is copied correctly.

[Bug 987650] [NEW] Audio Realtek ALC889, Green/Black/Yellow Line Out, Rear, no sound

2012-04-24 Thread Blown2bits
Public bug reported:

When playing RhythmBox or using the test sounds. No sound comes out of
the rear panel for the speakers, however sound does come out of the
headphones on the front panel.

Audio did not worked after I fresh-installed Ubuntu 12.04RC2 until the
second-to-last update. Then it worked. Then the last update perhaps
made it not work again.

In Sound Settings... I tried setting the Analog Audio to different
types, i.e. Analog Stereo Outputs and Analog Surround 5.1 Outputs. Both
worked through the headphones (e.g. the front left and right speaker
tests), but nothing through the rear panel.

If I use the Pulseaudio Manager and crank up the Audio to 400 %, I can
hear a faint, distorted audio from the speakers (also turned up). This
could simply be cross-leakage from the front panel circuits...

Had an extension cable plugged into the front panel, so I didn't think
to realize that it was detecting the headphone even when the headphones
were not plugged into the extension cable.

When the front panel jack is unplugged all 5.1 analog channels work on
the rear panel. Is this related to jack sense?

[Bug 987650] Re: Audio Realtek ALC889, Green/Black/Yellow Line Out, rear jacks: no sound when front jack plugged into headphones

2012-04-24 Thread Blown2bits
Used:
apport-collect 987650

But it seemed to crash. So I will change to Confirmed without it.

Perhaps if someone can let me know what further information is needed I
can provide it manually.

EDIT: Oh, wait. Now I see that a bunch of files were added.

[Bug 987650] Re: Audio Realtek ALC889, Green/Black/Yellow Line Out, rear jacks: no sound when front jack plugged into headphones

2012-04-24 Thread Blown2bits
The syslog.

** Attachment added: WifiSyslog.txt

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/987650/+attachment/3101382/+files/WifiSyslog.txt

** Description changed:

Using two WD Caviar Black SATA3 (WD1002FAEX) drives raid 0 on a Marvell SATA
RAID controller built into the Asus Rampage III.
Both drives have Native Command Queuing.

Drive is /dev/sdb1, formatted ext4.

Controller from lspci:
01:00.0 SATA controller [0106]: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88SE9123 PCIe
SATA 6.0 Gb/s controller [1b4b:9123] (rev 11) (prog-if 01 [AHCI 1.0])

This issue may be related to or a duplicate of Bug #539467. Though it
is a desktop machine, not a laptop. So not power state changes caused
by power cable being plugged or unplugged.

I have seen references to a problem with NCQ, but I don't know if that is
relevant here.
I have seen references to a problem with these drives in RAID configuration,
but I don't know if that is relevant here.

Symptoms:
1. Transferring 200 GB of data.
2. System freezes while drive light flashes once per 2 seconds
3a. 95 % of time: after 10-20 seconds, system recovers. (see attached syslog)
3b. 5 % of time: system does not recover. Drive light flickers with some
activity (v. dim, though). System can be reset with Ctrl-Alt-SysRq-B.

If system recovers, syslog contains attached file: 120418_syslog.txt
(will attach).

[Bug 851771] Re: Permission Denied error during backup

2011-10-07 Thread Blown2bits
I have the same problem. When I check the number of files in the backup
folder it is always 2,027. If anyone gets this issue, post the number
of files in your backup folder.

I am using a 1.82 TB ext4 partition on a non-root drive connected to
Sata III.

Except for second-to-last, most seem to be error 4's in libpango at
offset 0xd86.

I recently upgraded from Lucid in which lottanzb was stable with
hellanzb. However, now, it won't make it through a single nzb.

SABnzbd still runs and continues to download NZB.

.sbnzbd/sabnzbd.error.log is empty.
.sabnzbd/sabnzbd.log does not show any errors and does not show anything
indicating a shutdown (because it is still running, I guess):

[Bug 495430] Re: Evince fails in printing pdf document

2010-01-31 Thread Blown2bits
I am using Karmic 9.10. I confirmed that my libcairo2 is at
1.8.8-2ubuntu1.1 (it was automatically upgraded).

I was able to successfully print a document with a Symbol, Type 1 font
that was not embedded.

The issue that I was having appears to be fixed.

@madbiologist: You suggested that there might be more than one bug
here. Captain Chaos, Christian Mondrop, and myself all seem to have had
the issue fixed. Is there another issue that you can see? Does it
still exist on non-Karmic OS's?

@Christian (#9): For that second document that will not print: Is it
specific to the Sibelius fonts? I can't see any Sibelius fonts in it
through File | Properties | fonts and the first page of that document
prints successfully for me.

If the issue is indeed fixed, I can mark the bug as Fix released. I
will wait a day or so for more comments/confirmation first.

[Bug 477808] Re: package proftpd-basic 1.3.2-3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2010-01-20 Thread Blown2bits
***Warning: I detected insecure system behavior with this bug.***

Same thing happened to me. Installed gadmin-proftpd via Synaptic.
Thought I was installing a client. Realized my mistake and clicked
cancel when asked to choose between standalone and inetd. Install
failed after box popped up again multiple times.

Synaptic, however, reported it as installed. So, I uninstalled through
Synaptic. Looked at the details during the uninstall and it turned out
that instead of uninstalling, it finished the install and started the
server! But Synaptic now shows package as uninstalled!

I had to reinstall, and then uninstall again to actually uninstall it.

Because the server was started potentially without user knowledge or
permission, this is a definite system security issue.

uname -a: Linux xxx 2.6.31-18-generic #55-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 8 14:54:52
UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Steps to reproduce:
1. Start Synaptic
2. Select gadmin-proftpd for installation (version 1:0.3.5-4)
3. When config dialog asks to choose inetd or standalone, press Cancel
until it crashes or goes away.
4. In Synaptic, select gamin-proftpd for Complete Removal and hit apply.
5. In progress dialog, deselect checkbox Automatically close after the
changes...
6. Open the Details sub-window.

Note that the server has been started.

You may have checked this already, but can you check in your BIOS to see which
channels your DVD/CD and your HDD is on:

Primary Master - HDD?

[Bug 495430] Re: Evince fails in printing pdf document

2010-01-06 Thread Blown2bits
Same symptoms: CUPS log files show that the document printed correctly.
Printer receive light flashes then stops. Nothing comes out of printer.
Printer is HP2840 on ethernet interface.

I have successfully printed documents with Evince that have all fonts
embedded. The documents that will not print for me have at least one
font that is not embedded. They will not print from Evince, however
they will print successfully from xpdf.

I encountered three documents with the issue today (they contain
personal information so I can not attach them here).

Case 1: The culprit font that is not embedded in one of my documents is
Symbol, Type 1. That document was generated with OpenOffice Writer
locally on my system.

Case 2,3: The non-embedded fonts are Helvetica, Helvetica-Bold, and
Helvetica-Oblique. All Type 1. The document was generated by a
government agency and e-mailed to me.

All other embedded fonts in document are TrueType fonts.

Going through log files, I can not find an example of a non-embedded
font document that I printed with Evince before today. So I am not sure
how long I have had this issue but never encountered it. However, today
I encountered it three separate times on two separate computers before
hunting for the bug on launchpad.

[Bug 496613] Re: Evince unable to print some pdf

2010-01-06 Thread Blown2bits
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 495430 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/495430

Confirmed: The document does not print for me.

Uname: Linux 2.6.31-17-generic #54-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 10 17:01:44 UTC 2009
x86_64 GNU/Linux
Evince 2.28.1-0ubuntu1.2

I note that the Helvetica fonts are not embedded in the pdf document.
There is another bug #495430 that seems to affect pdf files with fonts
that are not embedded. It causes the symptoms you describe.

Try printing the above document to a pdf file, and then try to print
that second pdf file to your printer.

If the second pdf file prints okay and the fonts are now embedded, then
this bug may be a duplicate of #495430 and should probably be marked as
such. In fact, I am pretty sure it is, so I will mark it as such. If I
am wrong, then by all means, switch it back.

@madbiologist: If this bug is a dupe of 495430, then it would be
interesting to know what the difference is between your machine and the
ones that don't print the file. Do you have Helvetica fonts installed
natively on your printer?

[Bug 475997] Re: after upgrade to karmic during audio playback a high-frequency whistling can be heard

2009-12-17 Thread Blown2bits
Confirmed: High-frequency whistle (sounds like exceeding Nyquist
frequency) with ALC882+pulseaudio when playing any audio in 5.1 analog
output.

Fix works:
; default-sample-format = s16le
default-sample-format = s24le

$  pulseaudio -k

Then, whistles gone.

Sound driver: hda_snd_intel.
On-board sound: Asus P5W DH Deluxe with (ALC882) audio

Two notable things also occured that might be useful in diagnosing:

1. Was getting a bunch of rate limit messages before default-sample-
format changed to s24le. Afterward, the rate-limit messages were
reduced considerably even after I went back to s16le. You can see that
in messages log. Comments in square brackets.

2. Everytime PA is killed this appears in messages and syslog:

broken: it reports a volume range from 18.00 dB to 18.00 dB which makes no

3. Twice received this message in syslog:
Dec 17 00:25:03 sophia pulseaudio[21491]: alsa-sink.c: ALSA woke us up to write
new data to the device, but there was actually nothing to write!
Dec 17 00:25:03 sophia pulseaudio[21491]: alsa-sink.c: Most likely this is a

[Bug 316165] Re: [intrepid] MicBoost with Intel HDA / Realtek ALC882 introduces DC-bias

2009-02-15 Thread Blown2bits
Moving into the alsa-driver package, which is probably where I should
have posted originally.

No solution yet.

I changed to Ubuntu AMD64 from Ubuntu x86 and still the same problem, so
not likely kernel related.

Also, I have managed to find and look at some of the ALSA driver code
but haven't been able to figure out where the mic boost translates into
ALC882 instructions. I think that might be where the problem is
occuring. Just a hunch really.

I think this bug needs to go into alsa-drivers and not linux, so I am
doing that with this post.

[Bug 316165] Re: MicBoost with HDA-Intel introduces DC-bias

2009-01-11 Thread Blown2bits
** Description changed:

Running Ubuntu Intrepid with Intel-HDA (ALC882) sound: MicBoost does
  not seem to work properly.

  Background:
  ==
Prior to seeing symptoms (below), have never been able to get microphone to
work well for Skype:
   - mic audio very low with 0 MicBoost (0 setting in alsamixer and
gnomealsamixer).
   - mic audio completely distorted and nearly inaudible with full MicBoost.
   - intermediate MicBoost caused distortion but audible.
   - Skype setting let Skype adjust audio... caused mic audio to be distorted
and inaudible (so did not use).

Always assumed problem with Skype was some problem with pulseaudio until
I tried recording from Audacity and noticed that adjusting MicBoost
while recording from microphone shows four steps of DC-Offset (0 - 3).
  (see attached screenshot).

  Problem:
  ==
- According to the screenshot, MicBoost seems to be amplifying the microphone
(good), but also creating an extreme negative DC-bias (bad), i.e. shifting the
signal into the negative until only the largest positive peaks are not clipped.
Each step corresponds to one of the four steps of the MicBoost control.

This is a total SWAG, but one possibility comes to mind:
Could the type INTEGER be wrong? Perhaps it should be a FLOAT and we are
seeing the results of an aliased setting?

If someone can point me in the right direction, I would be willing to
look at the source to try and track it down. I know C/C++/Java, but I
have no idea where it might be in the source (i.e. kernel?, module?,
