Maybe we can figure out what's common between our systems since I imagine if everyone were getting this error then this bug would be getting more attention. I'll also note this started for me with 5.15. 5.13 and earlier did not exhibit this error. System seems to run fine though. No noticeable degradation in performance or functionality. [Bug 1767654] Re: [Intel Braswell] Cursor gets stuck on left side of the screen
@tonypanduru I'd like to share a slightly improved workaround on this for those still dealing with the issue. The core problem seems to be that the mouse cursor can go into a negative X position by one pixel when moved to the far left of the screen. With either the now obsolete intel proprietary driver or the current intel modesetting driver, this causes issues (exact symptoms are different for each, but seem to be from the same root cause). My previous workaround got by this by scaling the entire desktop to 99.99% of its former size. This prevented the cursor from getting to the -1 X position, but came at a cost of lost performance and some screen tearing in videos and games. This was due to a bilinear filter being applied by xrandr to the whole desktop to accommodate the slight re- size. The following command avoids this issue and instead merely shifts the entire desktop right one pixel. It still works around the issue, but seems to avoid the overhead of resizing the whole desktop (which preserves display integrity and performance). xrandr --output HDMI-3 --transform 1,0,-1,0,1,0,0,0,1 It would be nice to get a root cause fix for this, but this workaround seems to do the trick with very little downside. As before, replace the "HDMI-3" with the name of your active display (found by running xrandr with no options) and place the command in your ~/.xprofile (or make a startup app entry in your desktop manager). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1767654 Title: [Intel Braswell] Cursor gets stuck on left side of the screen To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/1767654/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1447664] Re: 14e4:1687 broadcom tg3 network driver disconnects under high load
I did not apply the patch in #13, but I did try disabling highdma with ethtool (essentially what the patch makes permanent) and that had no effect for me (at least not on the kernel I was using at the time). I did try the patch in #40 and that had no effect for me either. The only thing I've found that keeps my Broadcom 5762 alive without disconnecting is the kernel parameter "iommu=pt". I'm just finally grateful to have found a workaround so I can keep this server wired and not have to rely on its wireless only. I can't help but think we are chasing a moving target across so many kernel versions since this issue was first reported. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1447664 Title: 14e4:1687 broadcom tg3 network driver disconnects under high load To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1447664/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1447664] Re: 14e4:1687 broadcom tg3 network driver disconnects under high load
I'll also add that though I had previously tried iommu=soft with no luck, trying iommu=pt as suggested by chithanh in post 70 does seem to workaround the issue successfully. I'm not sure as to why that would be the case as this is neither a VM nor a VM host, but since adding the parameter to my kernel line and rebooting I've been running for several hours with media continuously streaming. Without the parameter it would only stream for a matter of minutes before dropping the connection. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1447664 Title: 14e4:1687 broadcom tg3 network driver disconnects under high load To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1447664/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1447664] Re: 14e4:1687 broadcom tg3 network driver disconnects under high load
Problem still exists with kernel 5.3.0-59-generic. Same machine I reported on previously. Multiple kernel releases since then. Only change with more recent kernels is that the connection recovers on its own after a few minutes (as opposed to requiring a reboot). Still, the only workaround that has any effect is to manually set the connection to 100mbps and half duplex. Pretty useless for a media server. [Bug 1767654] Re: [Intel Braswell] Cursor gets stuck on left side of the screen
I can confirm that the problem is present with both the intel and the modesetting driver on Braswell systems. The exact symptoms differ for each, but in both cases it is triggered when the mouse touches the left limit of the screen. With modesetting, it seems to "stick" until you move the mouse away from the left side. With intel, touching the left side starts a flickering that persists even after you move the mouse away. Mainly, just the mouse cursor flickers, but the whole screen will flicker when doing graphics intensive tasks like fullscreen video or gaming. Sometimes, the mouse flicker can be so bad it becomes nearly invisible. I have made full report on the bug report thread opened by Salvatore. The good news is I found a workaround, you can use xrandr to scale the display to 0.x0. and this prevents the issues in both intel and modesetting. This can be done in your .xprofile in your home directory to take effect at login. It does come with a slight performance penalty, but it's preferable to the glitching that happens otherwise (at least until someone fixes the regression). xrandr --output HDMI-3 --mode 1920x1080 --scale 0.x0. Replace "HDMI-3" with the name of your display (can be found by running xrandr with no options).
[Bug 1837394] [NEW] Only N-1 icons appear in dock when reversing "Workspaces" defaults
Public bug reported: When the defaults are left in the "Workspaces" preferences, everything functions as expected. But when the options are reversed from the defaults, the result is that the icon for the most recently opened app on a workspace is missing from the dock. Steps to reproduce: Select "Dock Preferences" -> "Workspaces" For "Pinned application dock icons" select "Display on all workspaces" For "Unpinned application dock icons" select "Display unpinned apps only from current workspace" Apply the settings Now open any app (like calculator). The app opens on the current workspace, but its icon does not show in the dock. Now open another app (like font viewer). It too opens on the current workspace but without its icon appearing in the dock. However, the icon for the first app (calculator) now shows in the dock. Repeating for a third app has the same results (its icon is missing from the dock), but now both the first and second apps appear in the dock (calculator and font viewer). This behavior continues with each new app opened. The most recently opened app on the workspace is not displayed in the dock. Only n-1 app icons on the current workspace are displayed. Switching to another workspace and back will momentarily bring all app icons into the dock for that workspace, but then the unexpected behavior continues when further apps are opened. Setting the "Workspaces" preferences back to default restores expected (but not desired) behavior. This behavior was observed on an Ubuntu Mate 18.04.2 LTS system with Mate Dock Applet 0.87 (GTK3) ** Affects: mate-dock-applet (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1837394 Title: Only N-1 icons appear in dock when reversing "Workspaces" defaults To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mate-dock-applet/+bug/1837394/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1447664] Re: 14e4:1687 broadcom tg3 network driver disconnects under high load
@paulo.guedes Yes, removing and re-adding the modules as you describe does at least recover eno1 without rebooting. Still, hardly a solution for what was intended to be a headless Plex server. This happens every time I start an mpeg2 tv stream through my plex box which is only about a 20mbps load. Sometimes it happens immediately sometimes it goes for nearly an hour. Also, I compiled a custom kernel with the patch described in post #40. It had no effect on the dropouts for me. They are still occurring. [Bug 1447664] Re: 14e4:1687 broadcom tg3 network driver disconnects under high load
Confirmed that this is still an issue on 18.04.1. I have an HP 705 G1 with the Broadcom 5762. In my case it's a Plex server. Whenever I try to stream something the interface goes "NO-CARRIER" and the only way to recover is to reboot. I've tried disabling highdma, tso and gso using ethtool, iommu=soft kernel parameter, and forcing every combo of 1gbps/100mbps & half/full duplex. Nothing seems to workaround the issue. [Bug 1462186] Re: Add MATE support
@jorgicio, at least on Ubunutu Mate 18.04.1 LTS (which uses Mate 1.20 and XDG-Utils 1.1.2) I think you'll find (as I have) that Caffeine 2.9.4 can inhibit power management correctly, but not the screen saver (mate- screensaver). As Thomas correctly points out, this is not Caffeine's fault as it relies on the abstraction provided by XDG-Utils to do the work and there seems to be a disconnect somewhere between xdg- screensaver and mate-screensaver. In fact, any full screen app that attempts to suspend the screensaver via XDG-Utils seems unable to do so in Ubuntu Mate. I found this thread that spans 2014 to 2017 that got at least part of the way there, but it doesn't seem like anyone ever finished it up. http://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-screensaver/issues/57 But, the good news is that your (jorgicio's) patch for Caffeine 2.8.3 does in fact still work correctly even on the latest Ubuntu Mate 18.04.1 LTS as I've applied it myself and it works just fine. So thank you for that. :-) And thank you too, Thomas, as Caffeine did help me solve my problem as well (even if it is an older version). ** Bug watch added: github.com/mate-desktop/mate-screensaver/issues #57 https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-screensaver/issues/57 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1462186 Title: Add MATE support To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/caffeine/+bug/1462186/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1462186] Re: Add MATE support
@rrt, looking back at my last reply, I mistyped. What I meant to say is that I'm sure it would not work (xdg-screensaver being used to inhibit mate-screensaver because mate-screensaver does not support the xdg spec). This is a known issue going back to 2014. One could argue that the xdg team should accept it as a bug to support mate better or one could say that mate should accept it as a bug to support the xdg spec correctly. In either case, both teams seem happy with where they are at and neither seem willing to move forward on this. And now that I have 2.8.3 with jorgicio's patch (which works exactly like you would expect under mate), I'm happy with what I have too. Someone else can fight the good fight on getting these two teams to figure out why it's not working. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1462186 Title: Add MATE support To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/caffeine/+bug/1462186/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1462186] Re: Add MATE support
@rrt, thanks, but I'm sure that scenario would work just fine and then they would refer me to report a bug against mate-screensaver who would then just suggest that I use the mate inhibit panel applet instead. Which works fine, but is not an indicator like yours and is essentially unthemeable (it sticks out like a sore thumb with my theme). jorgicio's patch for 2.8.3 does exactly what I need it to so my issue is resolved. I'll leave y'all to do with that info what you will (I totally get why you're going the xdg-utils route moving forward).
