[Bug 360091] Re: mountmanager deleted my fstab!

2009-04-17 Thread Bogdan Bivolaru
Maybe the system should back up fstab automatically (make restore points): cp
/etc/fstab /etc/backup_2009_04_17/fstab
and then if a test at boot time reveals that fstab is empty retrieve and offer
a list of restore points. Or wait till someone makes configuration changes
transactional (with commit, reverse).

PS:
I'm sure the guy only had the best of intentions. Maybe it did not occur on
his system and then we should improve our testing process, but please don't
look for people to blame. Humans fail all the time, only we should design a
testing process designed to avoid such errors.

[Bug 141564] Confirm bug & solution with 7.10 upgrade to 8.04

2008-06-14 Thread Bogdan Bivolaru
I had KUbuntu 7.10 and I upgraded to 8.10 using Adept.
Devices in /media (hdd) were appearing with uuid symbols. Accessing them
reported "Feature only available with HAL."
I ran /usr/lib/hal/hald-generate-fdi-cache and now devices in /media behave
normally.

Possibly related:
After upgrade I could access the mounted CD/DVD just fine (even before running
hald-generate-fdi-cache), but ejecting or unmounting the CDrom kept reporting:
"kio_media_mounthelper: <>"

This was not solved by running hald-generate-fdi-cache. The problem is
still standing.

Muting the microphone (&other input sound devices) did stop my PC hissing.

what does Microphone and Microphone amplifier have in common with sound output?
