[Bug 1907929] Re: Upgrade from 18.04 to 20.04 fails with "pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages"

2020-12-13 Thread Brain
After a lot of investigation this turned out to be an issue with
libsane. After reinstalling it I managed to upgrade to 20.04.

It would be however very useful to get some debug information which
package is blocking the update.

[Bug 1712384] Re: Nvidia driver (proprietary) fails to load after suspend

2017-09-05 Thread Brain
Installing the mainline kernel 4.13rc6 intermediately solved the problem
until the recent Ubuntu update from approximately 4.9.2017. This also
upgraded the 4.10 kernel, which introduced the issue again. Even though
the running kernel is 4.13rc6.

It seems there is some unseen conflict or hidden dependency between the
kernel package and the nvidia drivers.

[Bug 1712427] Re: No audio output to Speakers when HDMI cable removed

2017-08-30 Thread Brain
Unfortunately I have to revise what I said. The bug does still exists in 4.13.
There is however the difference that with the 4.10 kernel it always exists,
whereas in 4.13 it sometimes happens and sometimes correctly switches to analog
audio. I haven't found yet any pattern when it happens.

[Bug 1712427] [NEW] Audio output improperly switches to Speakers when HDMI removed

2017-08-22 Thread Brain
Public bug reported:

The Sound Settings dialog in Unity allows to switch between various
audio outputs.

If HDMI is selected and the cable removed the dialog shows that Speakers are
selected. But there is no audio. To actually output audio to speakers one needs
to click some other output ("Simultaneous output ...") and then again on
Speakers.
The expected behaviour would be to actually play audio on the speakers without
the need to switch forth and back.

[Bug 1691716] Re: High CPU after update-manager is finished, dialog still open

2017-08-22 Thread Brain
I can confirm exactly the same issue.

The Ubuntu Software Updater exhibits constant high CPU usage when the
final pop-up "The software on this computer is up to date. [ OK ]" is
shown after the updates have been performed.

Output of top:

  PID USER PR NIVIRTRESSHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND

 1496 root 20 0 894152 337872 298496 S 13.3 2.1 5:15.88 Xorg

update-manager

There is no reason for high CPU usage just to show a pop-up notification
with an OK button, waiting for user confirmation. It should not need any
CPU in an event driven system.

The high CPU usage disappears after clicking the OK button.

This is particularly a problem when running on battery. The pop-up
dialog usually ends up below other windows and the user doesn't notice
it. In the meantime it is heavily draining the battery.

[Bug 1712384] Re: Nvidia driver (proprietary) fails to load after suspend

2017-08-22 Thread Brain
I'm sorry, the 'apport-collect 1712384' command does not work.

The "Collecting problem information" window appears, however the moving
bar stops moving very soon and the window stops responding, while the
python process is taking 100% CPU. Even after 5 minutes there is still
no response (and still 100% CPU usage).

Console output (after breaking the collection process):

[Bug 1712384] [NEW] Nvidia driver (proprietary) fails to load after suspend

2017-08-22 Thread Brain
Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu 16.04.3 on Asus UX501JW. The laptop has the NVidia
Optimus technology (Intel HD4600 and NVidia GM107M (GeForce GTX 960M)).
The latest nvidia-384 driver and bumblebee are installed.

After boot-up everything works fine. Until when the laptop gets
suspended by closing the lid and then wakes up. Then the syslog is
flooded with the below errors and the battery starts draining with 20W
as the kernel is trying to reload the failing module. A reboot "cures"
it (until the next suspend).

Interestingly - when suspending via the keyboard "Zzz" button this does
not happen.

This error appeared recently, a month or a couple ago.
I have been using this set-up for a few years and this wasn't a problem.

The same problem happens with nvidia-375 and older drivers.

Greatly appreciated if anybody could help me to shed some light on this.

Also broken in 1:20170314.1-0ubuntu0.16.04.1.

[Bug 1658016] Re: Intel AC7260 wireless (iwlwifi) stops working after computer sleep/wakeup

2017-01-24 Thread Brain
Just tried the mainstream kernel "4.10.0-041000rc5-lowlatency" as
mentioned above and I do confirm the very same problem exists there too.

Just to give a hint - this regression was introduced approximately in
the first two weeks of 2017, so it shouldn't be that difficult to trace
back the change, which could then point to the actual root cause.

[Bug 1658016] [NEW] Intel AC7260 wireless (iwlwifi) stops working after computer sleep/wakeup

2017-01-20 Thread Brain
Public bug reported:

Since about the beginning of 2017 the Intel AC7260 wireless card on my Asus
UX501 stops working correctly when the computer suspends to RAM and wakes up
again (laptop lid closed and opened).
The message is:

[ 7679.281856] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready

The only way to come around this problem is to re-insert the iwlwifi
module:

sudo modprobe -r iwlwifi; sudo modprobe iwlwifi

To be more precise what it means stops working: The wifi does not see
the networks correctly. nm-applet reports only one of many networks in
my area. My network is not there and it does not connect.

I used to have the problem rarely in the past. However it happened only
occasionally and I could live with the above workaround. Since about the
beginning of 2017 it happens __always__. Not sure, which update exactly caused
it, but you can imagine how annoying it is.
I would appreciate if it could be fixed. Thanks!

Here is the relevant dmesg log:

[Bug 1309361] Re: Kubuntu upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10 failed: "could not calculate the upgrade"

2014-04-18 Thread Brain
Hi,

thank you for the help. I will try to sort it out with the Lotus Notes
package.

Indeed it would be very useful to get the information you gave me also
from the updater, not just "something went wrong, please report a bug"
kind of message. At least more technical users could then sort out the
issues themselves and not waste your time by filling bug reports ;-)

Cheers

[Bug 1309361] [NEW] Kubuntu upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10 failed: "could not calculate the upgrade"

2014-04-17 Thread Brain
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 13.04
Release:13.04

I was upgrading from 13.04 to 13.10 using the GUI tool provided by KDE, the
upgrade started well, but then suddenly reported "Could not calculate the
upgrade"
Unfortunately there is not much information provided by the updater. This is
what I can see on the screen:
--
Upgrading Kubuntu to version 13.10
Preparing to upgrade
Setting new software channels -> failed
Progress bar showing 99%
"Fetching is complete"
--
I'm running Lenovo Thinkpad E530 with 64-bit system. There are some additional
packages installed on my system, both from additionals PPA and "stand-alone",
the most significant I can think of are Darktable and Lotus Notes.
Upgrading my other laptop few days ago went well.

This bug has been reported multiple times, but always closed as
"invalid" or "expired". However it is still appearing.

[Bug 1042069] Re: Jumpy Mouse Cursor using Thinkpad X230 (+X230t) Touchpad

2013-06-19 Thread Brain
I have the same problem on Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 530 and Ubuntu 13.04
The settings from comment #5 did not satisfy me since the cursor speed is
pretty much affected (reduced) and increasing the VelocityScale returns back
the problem.

After reading the Synaptics manpage I experimented a better configuration, that
doesn't affect the speed: there is a
nice feature called NoiseCancellation.

I have created the following config file in
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-thinkpad-touchpad.conf:

Section "InputClass"
Identifier "touchpad"
MatchProduct "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"
Driver "synaptics"
# fix touchpad resolution
Option "VertResolution" "100"
Option "HorizResolution" "65"
# increment noise cancellation factor
Option "HorizHysteresis" "50"
Option "VertHysteresis" "50"
EndSection

You can increase the Horiz-/VertHysteresis even more if you experience
still some jumping.

It seems to be an X related issue. I tried to use former kernel ( 3.2.0-45) and
the problem persists.
If I remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf, everything is working fine.
On my side i need compiz or at least 3D support such as OpenGL and i need an
option in xorg.conf option AllowSHMPixmaps "true" to use EGL.
Is there another way to enable this option ?

[Bug 1037610] Re: xorg nvidia crashes, ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit

2013-06-18 Thread Steven Brain
I'm facing the same bug on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32 bits.
I'm not able to run a console within the desktop. The desktop crashes.
I noticed that no xorg.conf solves the problem concerning use of konsole by
example.
I'm running kernel version 3.2.0-48 with gnome-shell

[Bug 970234] Re: Selecting spice and qxl mode results in blank screen

2013-02-16 Thread Brain
In 13.04 qemu-kvm-spice is dropped.
Use qemu-kvm and python-spice-client-gtk for SPICE.

qemu (1.3.0+dfsg-5expubuntu3) raring; urgency=low

  * Now that qemu provides spice support, and qemu-kvm-spice is removed from
the archive, have qemu-kvm (which qemu-kvm-spice always depended on)
P/C/R qemu-kvm-spice.
