I also lose focus in 12.04 after using hud and it usually happens after switching between apps using alt+tab. I'm on 12.04 and this issue happens randomly with unity 5.14.0-0ubuntu1 installed. Hi! Same problem here. Using 'normal effects' fullscreen flash works.
