[Bug 942789] Re: suspend/wireless_before_suspend tries to disconnect an inactive device

2012-03-13 Thread Brendan Donegan
It's true that the script shouldn't try and disconnect already inactive
devices, but at the same time the whole concept of testing wireless
before and after suspend depends on their being a pre-existing wireless
connection. You *should* have been prompted to create one before this
test ran (by virtue of the networking/wireless_connection running). Can
you confirm if that was the case? If not we'll need to fix things so
that networking/wireless_connection does run beforehand.

I'm not saying this isn't a bug, but at best it's a matter of just
prettifying the error - the test will and should fail anyway.

[Bug 942789] Re: suspend/wireless_before_suspend tries to disconnect an inactive device

2012-03-13 Thread Brendan Donegan
Having got to the bottom of this issue, this is actually not a bug in
Checkbox, but the nmcli tool used to drive the test. This:

Error: Device 'eth0' (/org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/Devices/1)
disconnecting failed: This device is not active

is not what is causing the test to fail. This is:

** WARNING **: handle_property_changed: failed to update property
'active-connections' of object type NMClient. Error: Timeout 90 sec
expired.

and it's (mostly) unrelated.

We can still change the test so that it doesn't try and do pointless
stuff like deactivating already inactive connections but that isn't the
crux of the issue and isn't a considerable problem.

if device_props.Get('org.freedesktop.UDisks.Device', DeviceIsDrive):

print device_props.Get('org.freedesktop.UDisks.Device',

I wonder if this is one of those systems that would cause other failures
like the storage_test script picking up the empty SD slot as a full
block device... we hates these machines... hates them we do.

Could be, but the storage_test was adapted to check the size before
running so this problem shouldn't occur anymore.

[Bug 944939] Re: [Lenovo e320] Checkbox fails to detect the SD and SDHC - Manual test works fine

2012-03-06 Thread Brendan Donegan
If we just add test for the scsi category then the test may pick up any
hard disk, not necessarily one with an SD card reader on it. I want to
have a look at the system to see if UDisks has some way of telling the
difference, but currently it isn't accessible in the lab.

[Bug 947366] Re: [Lenovo e320] - cpu_scaling_test Fails

2012-03-06 Thread Brendan Donegan
In this case it looks like the test passed, so the failure may be a one
off. The outcome of this test is influenced by the system load at the
time the test is run, and we try our best to limit this effect. For
example the 'nice -n 20' runs the cpu_scaling_test with a very low
'niceness' level, meaning that it tries to steal all the cpu cycles. If
there are a lot of other 'not nice' processes running at the same time
this could impact the outcome. It's important not to do *any* other
tasks on a test system while Checkbox is running or else the outcomes
could be influenced by them.

Run the command again and immediately after, echo $?. This will tell you
the result - do this five times and if the result is always 0 then close
the bug as Invalid.

Jeff,

It's more correct to say the test *was* flaky. We run it regularly
during SRU testing and rarely have problems. If it's failing,
consistently, on a system then it should be taken seriously.

[Bug 944939] Re: [Lenovo e320] Checkbox fails to detect the SD and SDHC - Manual test works fine

2012-03-03 Thread Brendan Donegan
I'm curious to know what kind of icon displays on the launcher when the
card is inserted? Is it an SD card icon or a plain old disk icon? If
it's an SD card icon that would be good, as at least *someone* knows how
to tell that an SD card reader is on the SCSI bus. If it's a plain old
disk then maybe we're scuppered and need to rethink this test.

[Bug 942572] [NEW] Notify OSD panel is opaque when shown in the installer

2012-02-28 Thread Brendan Donegan
Public bug reported:

When notify-osd triggers during the install (such as when networks are
detected or connected to) the panel shown is fully opaque. The border is
dark grey and the centre is some random color (mainly aubergine,
sometime orange, red or even blue).

The same problem is not exhibited in the live session, otherwise I would
assign this against notify-osd itself.

[Bug 942030] [NEW] 'Take a photo' preview pane not showing live preview

[Bug 942078] [NEW] Initial attempt to connect to U1 service exhibits frequent disconnect/reconnects

2012-02-27 Thread Brendan Donegan
Public bug reported:

On this freshly installed system the first thing I attempted to do was
setup Ubuntu One. After installing the client I waited for the folder
list to appear so I could select folders to sync. Every few minutes the
status pane would say that File Sync was disconnected. A few moments
after that it would attempt to reconnect again. After a while I got
tired of waiting and rebooted the system. Soon after that the folder
list got synced and I everything seemed to be working normally.
Hopefully the correct logs are attached here to diagnose this. Please
get in touch if you need me to reproduce the problem.

[Bug 848553] Re: suspend-test doesn't detect suspends

2012-02-23 Thread Brendan Donegan
The suspend_test script is deprecated, in fact you will find it's not
used by any job in the Ubuntu Friendly tests. To test suspend as we do
for Ubuntu Friendly you should use:

sudo /usr/share/checkbox/scripts/sleep_test -d

In theory we should remove the script which is no longer used. In
practice an SRU to simply remove script is not worth the effort.

[Bug 937934] [NEW] Rhythmbox integration with indicator-sound is broken

2012-02-21 Thread Brendan Donegan
Public bug reported:

1.) Selecting the 'Rhythmbox' option from the menu of indicator-sound doesn't

Hi,

What version are you using? Running 'apport-collect 930223' could be
useful. It's not true to say that Checkbox depends on that specific
package (well, it might if you are talking about an older version). I'm
running Precise and python-datetime itself is not installed, but the
datetime module may well be provided by another package.

[Bug 928980] [NEW] Browser generated audio comes out the wrong sink

2012-02-08 Thread Brendan Donegan
Public bug reported:

This is only happening after a recent update, which may have included
changes to PulseAudio, I'm not sure.

Anyway - the steps to reproduce on my system are:

1. Run pacmd
2. Run list-sinks to see if the C-Media_USB_Audio_Device is selected (has an
asterisk next to it)
3. Run set-default-sink if necessary
4. Open Firefox and go to Youtube and play a video
5. Observer the sound is coming from the internal audio not the headset
6. Open Rythmbox and play an MP3, observe the sound coming correctly from the
headset
7. Run list-sink-inputs and note that only the Rythmbox sink is listed even
though both are playing sound

Expected result:

Sound comes out the default sink at all times

Actual result:

Sound from the browser is not managed by PulseAudio and is just going
out the default

[Bug 928980] Re: flash audio, and other alsa-plugin apps, do not use PulseAudio

2012-02-08 Thread Brendan Donegan
** Description changed:

This is only happening after a recent update, which may have included
changes to PulseAudio, I'm not sure.

Anyway - the steps to reproduce on my system are:

  1. Run pacmd
  2. Run list-sinks to see if the C-Media_USB_Audio_Device is selected (has an
asterisk next to it)
  3. Run set-default-sink if necessary
  4. Open Firefox and go to Youtube and play a video
- 5. Observer the sound is coming from the internal audio not the headset
+ 5. Observe the sound is coming from the internal audio not the headset

[Bug 926136] Re: CPU1 on Dell PowerEdge M610, R715 and IBM X3500 M3 goes offline after exercising frequency governors

2012-02-08 Thread Brendan Donegan
Hi Joseph,

The problem I have is that if I reboot the system then the problem goes
away and even doesn't reoccur when I run the script which triggers it.
If I could get an ISO that uses the mainline kernel or whichever kernel
you want me to test with then I could be sure it does or doesn't fix the
issue.

2012-02-08 Thread Brendan Donegan
Steve,

Unless a fix is imminent it might be useful to put the workaround here
(I'm asking this in selfish mode, since I want to get Flash audio
working again : ) )

What do the contents of asound.conf need to be (bearing in mind that I
don't seem to even have such a file in my system)

Thanks,

Yeah, 'Prunes' is just the hostname - sorry if that's confusing. Since
this system is in a datacenter it might take some time to process your
suggestion, but we'll see if we can give it a try and I'll let you know
what happens.

Thanks,

Also, sorry if this seems like the wrong question but doesn't the fact
that it worked just fine with Natty indicate it's a genuine bug
(hardware config would have been identical)? It may be you just want to
establish that the RAID signature is or isn't causing the bug - in which
case ignore me.

Another test run done today seems to indicate that the CPU is not
offline initially. Perhaps one of our tests is making it go offline

This seems to be caused by running our cpu_frequency_governers test.
This script is playing around with the frequency governors supported by
different CPUs. I'm going to install Oneiric now and see if the same
thing happens.

2012-02-06 Thread Brendan Donegan
So, if I reboot the system then all the CPUs are online again.
Furthermore if I rerun cpu_frequency_governors then CPU1 has not gone
offline (all of this with the 3.2.0-12.21 kernel) after it finishes.
This makes it difficult to determine if the problem is really gone in
the mainline kernel. I would potentially need an ISO spun with the
mainline kernel in it.

[Bug 926136] [NEW] CPU1 on Dell PowerEdge M610 is offline by default

2012-02-03 Thread Brendan Donegan
Public bug reported:

Running Precise Alpha2 on a Dell PowerEdge M610 I am finding that:

echo 0 /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/online

fails because the content of the 'online' file is already 0. This means
1 of the systems 16 cores is offline by default. I have not seen this in
Oneiric so I assume it's not intended.

Attached is the cpuinfo file from the system. While getting this I made
the discovery that the /sys/devices/system/cpu/online file on this

Have you tried using the 'DeviceIsReadOnly' property of

telling if a partition is read-only.

[Bug 440889] Re: software-center crashed with ImportError in /usr/lib/python2.7/bsddb/__init__.py: No module named _bsddb

2012-01-21 Thread Brendan Donegan
Why has an old bug which has nothing to do with software-center crashing
been modified to serve as the master bug for an issue in Precise? This
is deeply confusing for new bug reporter, as this bug is several years
old so most would think that it couldn't have anything to do with
software-center in Precise.

[Bug 912522] Re: usb_test fails on non-writable filesystems

2012-01-19 Thread Brendan Donegan
I'm not sure I quite understand. With the changes you made, does the
test still fail if it has any writable partitions? In my opinion it
shouldn't - it just makes things confusing for the tester. As Daniel
mentioned before, a good idea might be to test reading at a minimum for
read-only partitions. As long as reading and/or writing works when
attempted then the USB port should be fine.

[Bug 886931] Re: Oneiric is a regression due to dysfunctional quality assurance

2012-01-09 Thread Brendan Donegan
Alex, we all agree that he makes some valid points - but it's not like
people don't realise these problems exist and are ignoring them.
Certainly from my point of view Oneiric was better quality than Natty
(though this was largely down to less churn rather than better quality
processes).

Hadmut,

It would be more useful to raise a specific bug about the commercial
software (you haven't mentioned which software it is) and if you have
concerns about the quality processes then try addressing the ubuntu-qa
mailing list for example.

For the record, the reason this bug report is invalid is not because I
think you're wrong, but because it's not a bug. A bug is an issue that
can be fixed. Making a catch all statement like 'the QA is
dysfunctional' doesn't help anyone.

[Bug 912522] Re: usb_test fails on non-writable filesystems

2012-01-06 Thread Brendan Donegan
We want to check the USB subsystem is working properly. Just mounting a
partition is not really good enough (would you test Wifi by just
checking that it pairs with an access point?). I would suggest that we
should try to write to every partition which is writable, and just
ignore the ones that aren't. If no partitions are writable then maybe we
need to fail the test (not enough info?)
