Re: [Bug 1691385] Re: package linux-image-4.10.0-21-generic (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 128

2017-05-17 Thread Brian May
Sorry Joseph, by the time I got the reply (which I didn’t know how
accessible you guys are), I’d deleted the pvm file (Parallels Virtual
Machine).

Dropped back to 16.04 which is running flawlessly.

I appreciate your work . . . thank you.

Regards

Brian

Re: [Bug 1691385] Status changed to Confirmed

2017-05-17 Thread Brian May
Thanks,

I was running this distro on Parallels Desktop on my MacBook Pro.

If it was a bot, do you recommend I delete this distro and re-download
17.04? (I’m pretty new to Ubuntu or Linux in general)

Thanks

Brian

[Bug 1275378] Re: No DHCP response e1000e

2014-02-07 Thread Brian May
linux-image-3.13.0-8-generic_3.13.0-8.27_amd64.deb seems to be fine. As
in the networking seems to be functioning fine. Can ssh into the box
fine.

(the console crashes on this kernel not long after starting X, going to
assume this is due to having rather old user space on this box at the
moment).

[Bug 1275378] Re: No DHCP response e1000e

2014-02-05 Thread Brian May
The following kernel appears to be fine:

image-3.13.1-031301-generic_3.13.1-031301.201401291035_amd64.deb

Not sure how to add the kernel-fixed-upstream tag, will have a look
around to see if I can find the option.

funnily enough, I don't have. Maybe not even relevant for this case
either.

[Bug 1275378] [NEW] No DHCP response e1000e

2014-02-01 Thread Brian May
Public bug reported:

After booting the Ubuntu Live CD nightly build from 2014-01-29, Linux
3.13, I am not getting responses to dhcp.

Running tcpdump on the affected machine, I can see packets coming in, I
can see the DHCP packets going out, but I can't see any response to
these DHCP packets.

So I suspect the packets going out aren't getting out or are being
corrupted.

Rebooting the machine to Ubuntu 12.04, and everything works fine again.

As per old red hat bug, I tried apic=off, this didn't help.

lspci says:

00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network
Connection (rev 02)

Unfortunately, without network access, I cannot run ubuntu-bug, as
described in guidelines.

[Bug 1019494] Re: Hauppage ir remote control doesn't work

2014-02-01 Thread Brian May
As far as I can tell, this is fixed in 14.04.

However, as networking in 14.04 using my e1000e base adaptor appears to
be broken, my testing was restricted (appeared to receive packets but
not send anything). I couldn't install the ir-keytable package required
for testing.

I ended up booting 14.04, nightly build from about 29/1/2014, and chroot
to my old 12.04 user tools. This odd configuration seemed to work fine.
As the problem was in the kernel, not in user space, am assuming this
means the user tools from 14.04 should also work fine.

Regardless, I should be able to test this issue without X Windows.

[Bug 1019494] Re: Hauppage ir remote control doesn't work

2012-06-29 Thread Brian May
Just recompiled the budget-ci module with the patch from
http://git.linuxtv.org/media_tree.git?a=commitdiff;h=5183c137974da0c8192fc4c5cc5cae5974125b06
and now it works

Steps to do this (so I don't forgot for next time...)

apt-get install linux-source-3.2.0
cd /usr/src
tar -xvf linux-source-3.2.0.tar.bz2
cd /usr/src/linux-source-3.2.0
patch -p1 < ~/linux.patch (the patched referred to above)
cd drivers/media/dvb/ttpci
cp /usr/src/linux-source-3.2.0/drivers/media/common/tuners/tda827x.h .
make -C /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/build M=$(pwd) modules
cp budget-ci.ko
/lib/modules/3.2.0-26-generic/kernel/drivers/media/dvb/ttpci/budget-ci.ko

Need to double check these steps.

In Ubuntu 11.10 I had an issue that is exactly the same, and managed to
get this patch to resolve it:

http://git.linuxtv.org/media_tree.git?a=commitdiff;h=5183c137974da0c8192fc4c5cc5cae5974125b06

Did this patch ever get into the kernel tree used by Ubuntu?

Unfortunately, my time is rather limited at present, so is my ability to
chase this up again.

Thanks

Just tested in again, it doesn't seem to like my http_proxy for some
reason. If I unset http_proxy, then it works.

brian@andean:~$ echo $http_proxy

The proxy works fine for other programs.

[Bug 873468] Re: Update to latest Release failed for overloaded mirrors with no descriptive error message

2012-04-17 Thread Brian May
@Barry and @Steve, in my case when I see this error, the most probably
cause is that update-manager has misidentified my repositories in
sources.list as third party repositories and disabled all of them.
Without telling me. As such it can't find the essential packages -
because they don't exist! However I am confused because there is no
indication it has disabled the essential repositories - after the
process aborts, the sources.list is reset back to its original value. An
error message that suggested that the problem is due to overloaded
mirror would be very confusing and misleading. It might lead me to file
bug reports against the wrong package, e.g. approx.

I have reported this problem in #773823, which unfortunately was merged
with a different bug. Requests to have this fixed have been ignored. As
such, if the mirrors are getting overloaded, maybe this is because
people are unable to use anything but the official mirrors?

Unfortunately, it would appear Ubuntu really don't care about people who
don't use the official supported mirrors; these mirrors can be expensive
to use due to Internet charges in Australia. I really don't want to have
to download the same files repeatedly for each computer I upgrade over a
slow and expensive ADSL connection if I don't have to.

2012-04-17 Thread Brian May
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 289952 ***

I use approx, which is a caching proxy, you configure it though by
changing /etc/apt/sources.list. No idea how it compares with apt-cacher-
ng, in the past apt-cacher had limitations that stopped me using it.

approx is provided by Ubuntu, hence it should be supported by Ubuntu
too.

In fact Ubuntu shouldn't care what mirror you use, it should just work.
Even if this means somehow overriding internal checks or something.

[Bug 873468] Re: Update to latest Release failed for overloaded mirrors with no descriptive error message

2012-04-17 Thread Brian May
For me the problem isn't so much the wording, but the fact the same
error message can arise from completely different causes. This needs to
be fixed before you can change the wording of the message, just because
the message is shown doesn't mean that there is a problem with the
mirror.

[Bug 873468] Re: Update to latest Release failed for overloaded mirrors with no descriptive error message

2012-04-15 Thread Brian May
Chris Puttick, the message generated is rather generic, and can have a
number of completely different causes. So I suspect it may not have
anything to do with overloaded mirrors.

Unfortunately, my bug report, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/update-manager/+bug/773823, was marked as a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/289952,
when they are different. Requests to unmark it as a duplicate have been
ignored. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-
manager/+bug/289952/comments/12

Have a look at both reports, they might help.

[Bug 897467] [NEW] mythtv-setup starts mythtv daemon even if it wasn't running

2011-11-28 Thread Brian May
Public bug reported:

If you run mythtv-setup (as opposed to mythtv-setup.real) it assumes the
mythtv daemon is running, and tries to kill it. If it isn't running this
generates errors.

Even worse, it then silently starts the daemon again when exiting.

However, just because I have stopped editing the setup does not mean I
am ready to have the daemon start yet. e.g. I might be exiting the setup
because I am having problems scanning channels, and I want to try
testing the TV card from the command line. I can't do this with the
backend running trying to access the card.

Please don't restart the daemon unless it was already running before it
was killed. Maybe even ask first.

Also:

* Please don't bother asking if if the daemon should be killed if it
isn't even running.

* The mythtv-setup.real checks the daemon is running itself, why does
mythtv-setup need to duplicate this effort?

[Bug 897465] [NEW] mythtv-backend segfaults if run without mythtv-frontend

2011-11-28 Thread Brian May
Public bug reported:

To reproduce:

1. Install brand new Ubuntu 11.10 (oneiric) i386 system.

2. Install mythtv-backend, do not install mythtv-frontend.

3. Try to configure backend with mythtv-setup. It will ask for what
language you want, but not list any options.

4. Push enter to continue, mythtv-setup.real will segfault. Or push
cancel, it the setup will continue regardless.

5. Install mythtv-frontend. Repeat. mythtv-setup.real will populate the
language list and work as designed.

I don't think it should be a requirement that the frontend should be
installed just to configure the backend.

Unfortunately, not sure how to get this dialog to reappear now that I
have it configured, so not sure how to reproduce.

[Bug 874989] Re: cgroup mount point in fstab causes boot process to hang

2011-10-27 Thread Brian May
This bug is particularly troublesome because it is so difficult to
debug; I spent hours trying to work out what was wrong. The fact
mountall looks like a daemon that should continue running doesn't help
(it is run as "mountall --daemon"). The fact there is no man page
doesn't help either. You are suppose to know to use "mountall --help".

Anyway if you run mountall in verbose mode ("mountall -v" from memory)
you see it complain that it can't mount cgroup because it is already
mounted. I think as a result it hangs and prevents the system from
booting, without logging any messages or showing any messages to the
user.

For the record in my /etc/fstab I had:

cgroup  /var/cgroup  cgroup  defaults  0  0

This was required in earlier Ubuntu releases because Ubuntu didn't mount
the filesystem itself.

2011-06-01 Thread Brian May
No!

Like I said in comment #19, this is a generic error, and may have a
number of causes.

In my case it was not overloaded servers that caused the problem. The
problem was that the upgrade process commented out all my sources.list
entries so the upgrade could not continue.

[Bug 779786] [NEW] won't let me click buttons in the certificate dialog

2011-05-09 Thread Brian May
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to natty, when trying to run a javaws application, it
tells me that the certificate cannot be verified. Good. However, when I
click on any of the buttons (run, cancel or more information) obsoletely
nothing happens. I end up having to kill the process, but that doesn't
help me in running the javaws application.

[Bug 774624] Re: multiple display support broken

2011-05-07 Thread Brian May
Hmmm Looks like DISPLAY, by default, is set to :0 not :0.0 now.

ratpoison doesn't add the screen number if there isn't already one
there.

I am guessing the exact code is screen.c, from line 277:

=== cut ===
  /* Build the display string for each screen */
  s->display_string = xmalloc (strlen(DisplayString (dpy)) + 21);
  sprintf (s->display_string, "DISPLAY=%s", DisplayString (dpy));
  if (strrchr (DisplayString (dpy), ':'))
{
  char *dot;

  dot = strrchr(s->display_string, '.');
  if (dot)
sprintf(dot, ".%i", screen_num);
}

  PRINT_DEBUG (("%s\n", s->display_string));
=== cut ===

If the "if (dot)" condition fails, it needs to append the string at the
end I think. So something like (not tested):

char * dot;
dot = strrchr(s->display_string, '.');
if (!dot) dot = s->display_string + strlen(s->display_string);
sprintf(dot, ".%i", screen_num);

I think the buffer should already be big enough for this -
strlen(DisplayString (dpy)) + 21 bytes.

Why was this closed as invalid? I found a work-around, but the bug still
stands.

There is no reason why Ubuntu upgrades should break badly if you use
non-official repositories.

[Bug 772531] Re: 'ubuntu-minimal' cannot be found anymore while upgrading to Natty Narwhal

2011-05-02 Thread Brian May
I think what seems to be very clear from all of these reports is that
the message complaining about ubuntu-minimal is very generic and can
have multiple causes.

It is unfortunate that all the problems showing the same symptom have
been lumped under the one bug, when the causes of these issues can vary
considerably.

Which suggests to me maybe the error itself is insufficient and doesn't
help diagnose the cause of the problem.

Just briefly, here are some reasons I have noticed from this report:

* upgrade process commented out sources entries because it considered
them 3rd party sources; upgrades should no supported from unofficial
mirrors as well as official mirrors (e.g. use with local approx server).
Under some circumstances they do work fine in fact, but the criteria is
broken.

* proxy server mis-configured.

* overloaded mirror.

* ubuntu-minimal, ubuntu-netbook and ubuntu installed at the same time
(why should this matter?)

There might be other reasons I have missed.

[Bug 774624] [NEW] multiple display support broken

2011-04-30 Thread Brian May
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ratpoison

If I select a window on my second display, that window gets keyboard
focus (good), however any new programs I start appear on the first
screen. This was fine before I upgraded from Maverick to Natty.

To create a window on the second display, I have to do it manually,
e.g.:

export DISPLAY=:0.1
xterm

Will try downgrading ratpoision and see if this helps.

[Bug 773823] Re: fails to upgrade with non-official repositories

2011-04-29 Thread Brian May
I worked out what happened. When upgrading my systems to 10.10, it
automatically added the following line to my sources.list without me
realizing:

deb http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu maverick main #Third party
developers repository

When doing an upgrade, it decided that there was at least one official
source, so wasn't going to let me do the rewrite step.

The work around was to comment out this line.

[Bug 773823] [NEW] fails to upgrade with non-official repositories

2011-04-29 Thread Brian May
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I have my /etc/apt/sources.list point to my approx mirror, so I don't
have to download copies of every file for every computer I upgrade.
update-manager considers all these entries as 3rd party sources and
disables them all, and then complains it can't find ubuntu-minimal.

Sometimes it will ask me if I want to rewrite maverick to natty - this
always use to happen prior to 11.04, but now it is very inconsistent. I
can't see how to activate that part of the code. When it does ask me,
everything works fine.

[Bug 270997] Re: intrepid regression: rdesktop overrides window manger key binding even when -K is used

2011-04-20 Thread Brian May
Based on the conflicting reports, I guess I am going to have to test
this myself then. I do have plans to upgrade a computer to natty beta
2, might take several days though.

For reference these are the changelog entries between natty and maverick
versions:

rdesktop (1.6.0-3ubuntu4) natty; urgency=low

  * debian/patches/debian/patches/16_lp667275.dpatch: fix more 64bit
crashes, from upstream, thanks to Stephan Diestelhorst (LP: #667275).

rdesktop (1.6.0-3ubuntu3) natty; urgency=low

(LP: #192218)

I don't think anything here that looks like it might have affected this bug...

Not happy after reading #41, I thought it was fixed for good in #38.

Dawning,

(a) for the record, can you please state what version of rdesktop you

(b) worth manually installing the version from 10.10 - rdesktop
1.6.0-3ubuntu2 - and see if this helps.

Thanks

[Bug 591608] Re: All accounts was lost after attempting to call by audio on gtalk

2010-10-05 Thread Brian May
I think this bug was closed in error.

I can't think of any reason why any of the above changes should cause
empathy to loose all accounts.

Furthermore, the only changes I made to my PAM config files was what is
required to support LDAP authentication. There is no reason this should
affect empathy or cause empathy to loose all accounts unless empathy
does something very dodgy with PAM. Every other program (including other
Jabber clients) works fine.

[Bug 649515] [NEW] revoking host key is broken

2010-09-27 Thread Brian May
Public bug reported:

Seems to be two bugs rolled in one, (1) I can't find mkmstempdir
anywhere, (2) "0x${HOST_FINGERPRINT}!" expands to "0x!" as
HOST_FINGERPRINT is not defined.

2010-06-16 Thread Brian May
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 251709 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/251709

I agree. Maybe it was the patch for #251709 that introduced this bug,
that doesn't make them the same thing. Marking this one as a duplicate
is very confusing as the bugs are very different.

The result is that #251709 is actually discussion of two rather
different bugs, and this is very confusing in itself.

Please unmark this as a duplicate.

As this bug was opened on the 2008-09-17 and there is still no sign of a
solution (other then to get an old version of rdesktop), I think it is
even more important to keep the meta information correct.

[Bug 585234] [NEW] chromium doesn't encrypt passwords

2010-05-24 Thread Brian May
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Binary package hint: chromium-browser

See:

http://penguindroppings.wordpress.com/2010/05/18/chromium-saved-passwords/
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=1397

Apparently there are hooks to do the encryption, but they haven't been
implemented on Linux.

I consider this a security issue, as users have come to expect passwords
will be encrypted through other browsers such as Firefox. If a computer
is stolen, the thief can get unlimited access to all passwords just by
booting up onto a live CD.

I have confirmed this with chromium-browser 5.0.342.9~r43360-0ubuntu2 in
lucid.

[Bug 573413] [NEW] package nvidia-current 195.36.15-0ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: nvidia-current kernel module failed to build

2010-05-01 Thread Brian May

While upgrading from the last Ubuntu release to Lucid I got an error
message that the nvidia module failed to compile, and that errors
occurred during upgrade.

This is kind of curious as this computer has an Intel based graphics
card, and I can't remember either installing it, so I am not sure why it
is trying to install the nvidia module. Will investigate more after a
reboot.

[Bug 485538] Re: /usr/share/mythtv/mythvideo/scripts/jamu.py returns error on success

2010-04-21 Thread Brian May
Hello Lorenz,

I haven't tried the autobuilds myself yet. It is something I perhaps
should do.

I do notice though that you have mythvideo version
0.22.0+fixes22594-0ubuntu1 installed, which is exactly the same version
I have installed from Karmic. Hence I suspect that you haven't installed
the newer fixed version.

privileges?

I put my details in /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow and it works fine.

[Bug 486944] Re: Different permission denied errors

2010-03-05 Thread Brian May
Strace clearly shows schroot drops its privileges:

...
getuid()= 10003
mlock(0x7f146bcb9000, 32768)= 0
geteuid()   = 0
setuid(10003)   = 0
getuid()= 10003
geteuid()   = 10003
setuid(0)   = -1 EPERM (Operation not permitted)
...

before attempting to do the stuff that requires root access:

...
stat("/dev/vg/schroot-lenny32", 0x7fff779e8e88) = -1 EACCES (Permission denied)
...

[Bug 486944] Re: Different permission denied errors

2010-02-25 Thread Brian May
Hello Roger,

I see you are subscribed to this bug, but not sure when. So I can only
hope you will see this ;-)

I think I can positively rule out SELinux, don't have that.

AppArmor seemed very suspect to me too. However I tried stopping
AppArmor (I think), and it didn't help:

br...@sys11:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/apparmor stop
[sudo] password for brian:
 * Unloading AppArmor profiles
 [ OK ]
br...@sys11:~$ schroot  -c sid
E: sid-72bbeab8-f26c-4bcb-b86f-fda313a70297: Failed to lock chroot:
/var/lib/schroot/session/sid-72bbeab8-f26c-4bcb-b86f-fda313a70297: Failed to
write session file: Permission denied

I have seen another problem that was definitely apparmor's fault. I
stopped apparmor as above and it worked. Maybe I should try removing the
package and rebooting just in case?

[Bug 486944] Re: Different permission denied errors

2010-01-27 Thread Brian May
Hmm. I installed schroot and schroot-common (versions 1.4.0-1) from
Debian/unstable, and it looks like I have exactly the same problem.

br...@sys11:~/tmp/abc/heimdal-1.3.1.rc2$ schroot  -c sid
E: sid-1639ab61-65e0-45e1-afd3-9d993578ba51: Failed to lock chroot:

Can you please explain this statement: "since all the mounting of the
filesystems is done as root". How is it done as root? In my case it
looks like nothing is being run as root unless I run the schroot command
as root.

Are the permissions on these files correct?

br...@sys11:~$ ls -l /usr/lib/schroot

[Bug 486944] Re: Different permission denied errors

2010-01-27 Thread Brian May
Hello,

Thanks for your response. I hope you will see mine...

Yes, the permissions on /dev/sys11 look wrong to me too. It is however
what udev, it is default config gives me. The error message changes when
I update the permissions, so I think it is significant.

Unfortunately I can see what is mounted and not mounted, it seems to
clean up everything on encountering the error.

I don't seem to have the 20nssdatabases script here, so I can't comment
on this.

Permission problem. Hmm. Lets see:

# find /var/lib/schroot -ls
212506340 drwxr-xr-x   4 root root   32 Jul 14  2008
/var/lib/schroot
264045480 drwxr-xr-x   2 root root6 Jan 28 09:53
/var/lib/schroot/mount
305107230 drwxr-xr-x   2 root root6 Jan 28 09:53
/var/lib/schroot/session

looks good to me.

Ok, will try that -v option now. Oh wait, the results are identical.
There is no extra information :-(.

Maybe I should check if there is a newer version of schroot.

Thanks

Where 90passwd is a simple script that copies my passwd entry from LDAP, this
is failing, presumably because of the
previous error - quite possibly because it didn't like me changing the path to

[Bug 486944] Re: Different permission denied errors

2009-11-22 Thread Brian May
On second thoughts, even if I chmod 755 /dev/sys11 schroot still fails
badly as non-root:

root operation works fine if I use the original /dev/sys11/schroot-sid

[Bug 485538] [NEW] /usr/share/mythtv/mythvideo/scripts/jamu.py returns error on success

2009-11-19 Thread Brian May
Public bug reported:

Once an hour I get these emails spammed to me:

"run-parts: /etc/cron.hourly/mythvideo exited with return code 1"

Looking at /etc/cron.hourly/mythvideo, this calls jamu.py, which is
returning 1.

>From the output jamu.py generates, it seems clear that these lines are
being executed, from line 5294:

# Check if this is a Scheduled and Recorded graphics download
request
if self.config['mythtv_watched']:
self._downloadScheduledRecordedGraphics()
sys.exit(True)

As far as I can tell this is not an error condition.

I believe True==1, which is generally considered an error code when
returned by a process in this manner. As confirmed from reading the
Python documentation:

sys.exit([arg])¶
Exit from Python. This is implemented by raising the SystemExit exception,
so cleanup actions specified by finally clauses of try statements are honored,
and it is possible to intercept the exit attempt at an outer level. The
optional argument arg can be an integer giving the exit status (defaulting to
zero), or another type of object. If it is an integer, zero is considered
“successful termination” and any nonzero value is considered “abnormal
termination” by shells and the like. Most systems require it to be in the range
0-127, and produce undefined results otherwise. Some systems have a convention
for assigning specific meanings to specific exit codes, but these are generally
underdeveloped; Unix programs generally use 2 for command line syntax errors
and 1 for all other kind of errors. If another type of object is passed, None
is equivalent to passing zero, and any other object is printed to sys.stderr
and results in an exit code of 1. In particular, sys.exit("some error message")
is a quick way to exit a program when an error occurs.

[Bug 251709] Re: rdesktop works bad with several keyboard layouts

2009-11-16 Thread Brian May
This bug #251709 (keyboard layout) is really getting confused with
#270997 (window manager keystrokes). It concerns me unless these are
split up as separate bugs, #251709 will get fixed but #270997 will be
forgotten.

I agree with Martin - every window manager has a different set of key
strokes to change windows. Under ratpoison for example, anything
prefixed with ctrl-t is intended for ratpoison. As latest versions of
rdesktop swallow this keystroke, it makes it impossible to change
windows (as ratpoison does not have any other mechanism to change
windows). It isn't rdesktop's job to second guess what window manager I
have installed or what keystrokes it uses.

I could imagine a need to pass every keystroke to rdesktop in some
situations, however please make it possible to override this behavour
and/or change the default.

[Bug 270997] Re: intrepid regression: rdesktop overrides window manger key binding even when -K is used

2009-10-05 Thread Brian May
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 251709 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/251709

Hello,

This bug has nothing to do with bug #251709, which is related to
keyboard layouts. It should not be marked as a duplicate.

This bug means rdesktop is unusable with keyboard only window managers,
such as ratpoison and stumpwm, as it is not possible to switch to
another application without the Window manager keyboard bindings.

I find it difficult to understand that it has been over a year since
this report was first filed, I have lost track of how many Ubuntu
releases have been made (I believe there is another release just around
the corner), and there has still been no sign of a solution, other then
to manually install an older version.

[Bug 377489] Re: frontend dies with illegal instruction

2009-09-09 Thread Brian May
No, I didn't resolve it.

It happens on two completely different computers (one is a factory made
Dell, the other is home assembled), in different parts of the house, so
I would be surprised if it is a hardware issue. I sometimes wonder if
maybe it is a 64bit issue...

It always happens at the same point, when exiting to the main menu.

[Bug 377489] Re: frontend dies with illegal instruction

2009-05-17 Thread Brian May
Most of the time it has crashed I haven't looked at the log file. Two
out of two times when I looked, there was this error at the end.

Sometimes it will crash multiple times repeatedly, then it will work
multiple times repeatedly. At one point I thought I had fixed the
problem, then it started crashing again.

It seems to happen when exiting an application {live tv, recorded tv,
image gallery} and go back to the menu.

I changed the .xsession so I won't lose details if/when it happens
again:

[Bug 294977] Re: not clear how to configure with pam-auth-update

2009-05-10 Thread Brian May
I never got a response to my last email to Steve Langasek. I could
always hope that it has been fixed in Jaunty (I haven't updated any of
my systems yet).

I suspect, if there was a solution, then Steve Langasek would have
already asked me to test it.

The problem is that 3 return values from pam_ldap are significant (user
unknown, auth unavailable, anything else), and I suspect the pam-auth-
update infrastructure is not flexible enough to be able to handle this,
not without changing the pam

[Bug 340836] [NEW] action=update broken

2009-03-10 Thread Brian May
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libpam-ccreds

The suggested configuration, at
 says to use if ldap
authentication failed, e.g. bad password, use action=update which
deletes the cached credentials.

This makes sense, because if the user entered an invalid password and
the LDAP server is contactable, the cached credentials may be
invalid[1].

However my tests reveal action=update is a NOP action.

This seems to come from the following line within cc_lib.cc

if (memcmp(data, data_stored, datalength) == 0 || !credentials) {
   ... do delete ...
}

I suspect the memcmp checks the password matches the cached value (no it
doesn't, the pam configuration makes sure of this). credentials set to
the string I am using to log in (I assume this is correct?). As such,
the if test fails, and the deletion is skipped.

This behaviour, if somehow correct, is not documented anywhere I can
see.

(note I am using the pam configuration from another bug report
)

Notes

[1] of course it could also be used as a DOS attack - e.g. connect
somebodies computer up to the network, type an invalid password, that
user won't be able to log in any more without using the network the
first time. Not sure what to do about this.

[Bug 294977] Re: not clear how to configure with pam-auth-update

2009-03-10 Thread Brian May
Hello,

My initial attempt at pseudo-code of the example was incorrect, I missed
the default=done bit.

Next attempt:

pam_unix.so
if (!success) {
  pam_ldap.so use_first_pass
  if (authinfo_unavail) {
pam_ccreds.so action=validate use_first_pass
  } else if (success) {
pam_ccreds.so action=store
  } else {
pam_ccreds.so action=update
  }
}

Now this makes more sense (action=update - delete - is only called if
authentication failed).

Your patch produces something a bit different:

# here are the per-package modules (the "Primary" block)
auth[success=4 default=ignore]  pam_unix.so nullok_secure
auth[success=3 default=ignore]  pam_ldap.so use_first_pass
auth[success=2 default=ignore]  pam_ccreds.so action=validate
use_first_pass
auth[default=ignore]pam_ccreds.so action=update
# here's the fallback if no module succeeds
authrequisite   pam_deny.so
# prime the stack with a positive return value if there isn't one already;
# this avoids us returning an error just because nothing sets a success code
# since the modules above will each just jump around
authrequiredpam_permit.so
# and here are more per-package modules (the "Additional" block)
authoptionalpam_ccreds.so action=store
authoptionalpam_smbpass.so migrate
# end of pam-auth-update config

Which I think is more like:

pam_unix.so nullok_secure
if (!success) {
  pam_ldap.so use_first_pass
}
if (!success) {
  pam_ccreds.so action=validate use_first_pass
}
if (!success) {
  pam_ccreds.so action=update
  pam_deny.so
}
...
pam_ccreds.so action=store

I guess the main difference is the example will only fall back to
action=validate if pam_ldap.so returns authinfo_unavail, where as this
will fall back to pam_ccreds.so if the passwords mismatch.

ie. consider the case when the user's LDAP password has been changed.
Maybe the old password was compromised. Obviously the old password will
still be valid with the network disconnected. However, here both the old
and new passwords will be valid when the system is connected to the
network again, until the user enters the new password at least once. I
could imagine this could be potentially confusing.

Another difference is it will call action=update if the user enters the
password incorrectly, and there is no network connection.

If I try to log in using cached credentials, it seems to work fine, but
then kicks me off again.

% ssh localhost
br...@localhost's password:
You have been logged on using cached credentials.
Connection closed by 127.0.0.1

Oh, right, this is probably because /etc/pam.d/common-account was not
updated.

The example config is:

account [user_unknown=ignore authinfo_unavail=ignore default=done]
pam_unix.so
account [user_unknown=ignore authinfo_unavail=ignore default=done]
pam_ldap.so
account required   pam_permit.so

I don't know why the "user_unknown=ignore" is required, I think the
important part is the "authinfo_unavail=ignore" for the pam_ldap.so
line. Or in the case of the intrepid file, I added "authinfo_unavail=1"
to skip the pam_deny.so

For now I am going to investigate why the action=update doesn't seem to
have any affect.

[Bug 294977] Re: not clear how to configure with pam-auth-update

2009-03-09 Thread Brian May
Just to clarify, do you want these files before or after I install
libpam-ccreds?

I will assume after:

br...@sys11:~$ cat /etc/pam.d/common-auth
#
# /etc/pam.d/common-auth - authentication settings common to all services
#
# This file is included from other service-specific PAM config files,
# and should contain a list of the authentication modules that define
# the central authentication scheme for use on the system
# (e.g., /etc/shadow, LDAP, Kerberos, etc.). The default is to use the
# traditional Unix authentication mechanisms.
#
# As of pam 1.0.1-5, this file is managed by pam-auth-update by default.
# To take advantage of this, it is recommended that you configure any
# local modules either before or after the default block, and use
# pam-auth-update to manage selection of other modules. See
# pam-auth-update(8) for details.

# here are the per-package modules (the "Primary" block)
auth[success=4 default=ignore]  pam_unix.so nullok_secure
auth[success=3 default=ignore]  pam_ldap.so use_first_pass
auth[success=2 default=ignore]  pam_ccreds.so action=validate
use_first_pass
auth
# here's the fallback if no module succeeds
authrequisite   pam_deny.so
# prime the stack with a positive return value if there isn't one already;
# this avoids us returning an error just because nothing sets a success code
# since the modules above will each just jump around
authrequiredpam_permit.so
# and here are more per-package modules (the "Additional" block)
authoptionalpam_ccreds.so action=store
authoptionalpam_smbpass.so migrate
# end of pam-auth-update config

br...@sys11:~$ cat /var/lib/pam/auth
Module: unix
[success=end default=ignore]pam_unix.so nullok_secure
Module: ldap
[success=end default=ignore]pam_ldap.so use_first_pass
Module: ccreds-check
[success=end default=ignore]pam_ccreds.so action=validate use_first_pass
[default=ignore]pam_ccreds.so action=update
Module: ccreds-save
optionalpam_ccreds.so action=store
Module: smbpasswd-migrate
optionalpam_smbpass.so migrate

br...@sys11:~$ cat /var/lib/pam/seen
cracklib

Not the auth line after action=validate doesn't appear to be valid - this is
not a cut&paste error ;-).

Ok, so I am blind. I double checked and action=store is there.

Unfortunately the resultant /etc/pam.d/common-auth file was not valid,
possibly as a result of the perl warnings. So I can't test it any

[Bug 294977] Re: not clear how to configure with pam-auth-update

2009-03-09 Thread Brian May
Hmmm. You appear to have missed the action=store, so the cached
credentials will never be saved in the first place. My understanding the
actions should look something like:

pam_ldap.so use_first_pass
if (authinfo_unavail) {
  pam_ccreds.so action=validate use_first_pass
  pam_ccreds.so action=store
  pam_ccreds.so action=update
} else if (success) {
  pam_ccreds.so action=store
  pam_ccreds.so action=update
} else {
  pam_ccreds.so action=update
}

Where action=validate will check the password with the cached version,
and action=store will save it on successful authentication.

I am not really certain what this action=update is - probably need to
read the source to find out

Also see <https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PamCcredsHowto>.

[Bug 294977] [NEW] not clear how to configure with pam-auth-update

2008-11-06 Thread Brian May
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libpam-ccreds

Hello,

It is not clear how to configure the pam config files in intrepid to
support libpam-ccreds without risking pam-auth-update overwriting the
common-auth file.

The example supplied with libpam-ccreds suggests to use:

auth [success=done default=ignore]pam_unix.so
auth [authinfo_unavail=ignore success=1 default=2] pam_ldap.so use_first_pass
auth [default=done] pam_ccreds.so action=validate use_first_pass
auth [default=done] pam_ccreds.so action=store
auth [default=bad]  pam_ccreds.so action=update

However this conflicts with the Ubuntu default:

auth[success=2 default=ignore]  pam_unix.so nullok_secure
auth[success=1 default=ignore]  pam_ldap.so use_first_pass
authrequisite   pam_deny.so
authrequiredpam_permit.so

in that it would require changing the pam_ldap entry. Doing that the
pam-auth-update way seems to imply modifying /usr/share/pam-configs/ldap
which is not a conffile.

Improved documentation on the best way to use this with intrepid would
be good.

[Bug 252474] Re: Version mismatch with raw controls packet format

2008-07-28 Thread Brian May
To my reading of the source code, it looks like when sending data over
the network flightsim converts the values to network byte ordering
(good). The code for doing the reverse has been commented out for some
reason (bad). Hence I don't think it could work except where host
ordering == network ordering. I am just in the process of

[Bug 252474] [NEW] Version mismatch with raw controls packet format

2008-07-27 Thread Brian May
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flightgear

Hello,

On one screen run:

fgfs --native-ctrls=socket,out,60,,5506,udp --disable-sound

On another screen on the same computer (32bit i386 Ubuntu Hardy) run:

fgfs --native-ctrls=socket,in,60,,5506,udp --fdm=null  --disable-sound

This is as documented at
<http://www.flightgear.org/Docs/getstart/getstartch5.html#x10-75.4>
but without (a) sound and (b) fdm communications (both work fine).

The second screen produces this error repeatedly:

Version mismatch with raw controls packet format.
FlightGear needs version = 27 but is receiving version = 452984832

452984832 == 1B00
1B == 27

So I wonder if this is a big-endian vs little endian issue.

Doing a websearch I found <http://www.mail-archive.com/flightgear-
[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg11635.html> which seems to imply the
problem should be fixed in the Hardy version, but it doesn't look like
it :-(.

[Bug 231321] Re: ldap over ssl fails

2008-05-20 Thread Brian May
This bug report may be invalid, it seems ldapsearch is fussy and
requires all certificates up the chain be verifiable. So the following
commands fixed the problem:

cd /etc/ssl/certs
cat root.pem class3.pem > /etc/ssl/cacert.pem
vim /etc/ldap/ldap.conf to use the value for TLS_CACERT

I believe it is the following: The key is signed by cacerts class 3
certificate which is signed by the root certificate. Some programs (like
openvpn and newer versions of ldapsearch) require every certificate up
the chain can be verified, however others like openssl s_client are OK
with just the class 3 certificate.

[Bug 196617] Re: [Hardy Alpha-5] fglrx log noise if dualhead unless ForceMonitors=nocv

2008-05-17 Thread Brian May
I added the following to the end of
http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=941

I just got a Dell Optiplex 755 with a twinhead X1300 card running Ubuntu Hardy
with the latest fglrx drivers from ATIs website, and have encountered what
looks like the same problem.

Apparently these bugs are the same:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24/+bug/196617
http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=570
http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=902

However in my case the only work around that works is to disable dri.

Option "ForceMonitors" "nocv" -- same problem.

aticonfig --dtop=horizontal -- same problem.

Symptoms: The mouse pointer is corrupt, and then the computer hangs (requiring
cold reboot) or reboots.

Question: What does the Option "ForceMonitors" "nocv" option do? I tried
looking for reference documentation on the options but couldnt.

[Bug 217159] Re: slapd + gnutls fails

2008-05-17 Thread Brian May
There seems to be some confusion here.

TLS_REQCERT on the client tells the client if it should check the server
certificate or not.

This is different whether or not the server checks the client
certificate or not.

I am having problems with the client checking the server certificate
(#231321), where changing TLS_REQCERT will help (but this presumably
will decrease the security because the server certificate is not
checked).

This bug report started of by saying that the server having problems
with the client certificate.

[Bug 231321] [NEW] ldap over ssl fails

longer work unless I disable SSL or disable checking of the server

However the server is fine, it works with ldapsearch from Debian/etch, and
openssl s_client on Ubuntu Hardy:

openssl s_client -verify 1 -CApath /etc/ssl/certs -connect

server issue.
