[Bug 1334079] [NEW] Unity Greeter doesn't display symlinked background.

2014-06-24 Thread Brian Semrad
Public bug reported:

I am a dropbox user so I keep all my photos in ~/Dropbox/Pictures and I
create a symlink to that directory via ~/Pictures. When i set my
background to a picture in that directory the greeter does not display
my desktop background on the login screen. If I move the picture to
/home/brian it works again. I tried changing the permissions for the
files and folders, and I was unable to get it to properly work. It
appears symlinked files do not work:

I have ha several friends report that using xfce on fedora 3.10.3 also
resolves the problem. I am curious if it is gnome related.

I just installed fedora on XPS 13 kernel 3.9.9-301.fc19.x86_64, same
issue. Does anyone have the link to the Kernel bug?

2013-06-04 Thread Brian Semrad
If it isn't in rc.local,

I have to run the following command:

echo 0 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

This will do it on demand.

2013-06-03 Thread Brian Semrad
#!/bin/sh -e
#
# rc.local
#
# This script is executed at the end of each multiuser runlevel.
# Make sure that the script will "exit 0" on success or any other
# value on error.
#
# In order to enable or disable this script just change the execution
# bits.
#
echo 0 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
# By default this script does nothing.

exit 0

Using the above script from shutdown to boot I am now able to adjusted my
screen-brightness after login. From stand by I added the following script to
/etc/pm/sleep.d (create new file and make it executable)

#!/bin/sh
# to fix backlight issues on resume

case "${1}" in
resume)
echo 0 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
;;
esac

I also have this problem with 3.8.0-23, looks like the bug has returned.
Adding the line to rc.local resolves the problem for now.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-02-19 Thread Brian Semrad
I just found this issue, and with latest 12.10 I have this issue, only
when using Thunderbird. I have been working on my laptop for 4 hours.
In the first two hours I have Thunderbird open and it crashed every 20
minutes (I can't recall if firefox was also open). I shutdown and
didn't open thunderbird. I have been working in Chrome testing Amazon
Web Services stuff for the last two hours without issue. It appears to
be thunderbird causing the problem for me. Anyone else?
