What I did was go into the program after restarting the computer
Synaptic Package Manager and in the search typed in ttf-mscorefonts-
installer and check the box in front of it and then click Apply and
follow the prompts such as checking the box on the EULA and continuing
on...

This version is more up to date.
THEN type
To install a downloaded Debian (Ubuntu) package (.deb): Open Terminal and type
sudo dpkg -i packagename.deb
To remove a Debian (Ubuntu) package (.deb):
sudo dpkg -r packagename
To Reconfigure/Repair an installed Debian (Ubuntu) package (.deb):
sudo dpkg-reconfigure packagename

Sorry I'm new to this bug stuff but virtualbox won't play Windows 8.1 there
is a version 6 out just recent for VMWare that will run Windows 8.1
Just thought I'd pass the information along and save someone the time from
my experience, YMMV.
