2021-07-05 Thread Bruce Pieterse
I just want to share a quick observation related to this bug. I've
noticed that when there is a kernel update and doing a soft-reboot, this
problem shows up. When this occurs, I do a soft-shutdown and power up
and the problem is resolved.

[Bug 1908656] Re: Evolution renders email attachments for a long time

2021-07-05 Thread Bruce Pieterse
I'm seeing a similar problem occurring in Ubuntu 18.04 with Evolution
3.28.5-0ubuntu0.18.04.2 with a new e-mail being composed and attaching
or detaching a local file with a size of 65KB which hangs Evolution for
about 20-30 seconds.

This problem did not occur on a previous versions of Evolution.
Additionally this is running on LTSP Fat Clients via SSH home mounts.

I'm not sure if my issue and this issue is related. Let me know if I
need to submit a new bug report instead. Happy to provide any debugging
information as well.

2019-11-11 Thread Bruce Pieterse
Thanks for commenting. I've been meaning to mark this as "Fix Released"
as the fix landed a few weeks back in 19.10 (Eoan).

Looks like it will have to be backported. Unfortunately, I don't have
Bug Triaging rights for Ubuntu, but hopefully some one else CC'ed in can
set this to Triaged.

[Bug 1181666] Re: gnome-shell randomly blocks mouse clicks from working in app windows

2019-10-14 Thread Bruce Pieterse
To expand on what Daniel said:

1. Start with one extension and remove it from Gnome Tweak Tools or the GNOME
Shell Extensions web site: https://extensions.gnome.org/local/
2. Restart GNOME Shell with ALT+F2, type in r then hit enter
3. If don't experience this bug for a few hours or days (days would be
preferred) let us know in this bug report and which extension you completely
removed. Perhaps we can narrow down on the problematic extension this way, if
it is actually an extension.
4. If you still hit this bug a few minutes or hours later, logout from your
session completely and try use the desktop for a few days. If you still have
this problem try the next extension and repeat 1-3.

If you have no more extensions installed and the error occurs, please
consider filing a new bug report as soon as possible with ubuntu-bug
gnome-shell and link the new bug report as a comment in this bug report.

I hope the steps above are useful.

Thanks

[Bug 1835706] Re: Extensions don't load in gnome-shell 3.33/3.34

2019-08-29 Thread Bruce Pieterse
Dash to Dock is currently broken as well. This branch
https://github.com/3v1n0/dash-to-dock/tree/gnome-3-34 works, but the
intelligent autohide brings down the entire gnome shell if enabled.

GNOME Pomodoro currently works, but was compiled under 3.32 from the
3.32 branch. The package has not be in the repos since Cuttlefish.

A bunch of extensions are not currently working in 3.34 as well. Would
you like me to setup a new bug report to track those as well? Not sure
if this bug report is still relevant. I know that pomodoro is working in

[Bug 1841646] [NEW] White text on white background for HTML e-mail

2019-08-27 Thread Bruce Pieterse
Public bug reported:

When viewing an HTML e-mail which does not define a default color for
the text, Evolution renders the e-mail with white text on a white
background.

This only seems to affect the Adwaita Dark and Yaru Dark themes.
Switching to Adwaita or any other non-dark theme, the background is
white, and the text is black.

Prior to the updates that landed this week, the text use to be black for
items such as "Retrieving message " and inline calendar
event details. These have now changed to white text for dark themes,
which is correct, but might have also introduced the white text on white
background issue for HTML mail messages that don't define a default text
color.

[Bug 1841646] Re: White text on white background for HTML e-mail

2019-08-27 Thread Bruce Pieterse
I forgot to add that this upstream report
(https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/issues/292) indicates that
issues like this are related to the theme, rather than evolution itself.

[Bug 1832374] [NEW] Media keys stop working due to missing service file

2019-06-11 Thread Bruce Pieterse
Public bug reported:

Over the last two releases I've noticed that if you have an audio player
such as Clementine running, pause the audio playback and watch a video
via VLC or SMPlayer and then close the video player and try to use the
media keys again, the following is logged to journald:

gsd-media-keys[2607]: Error calling method
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name
org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.smplayer was not provided by any .service files.

>From what I can see is that a service file is created for the media keys
for SMPlayer, when SMPlayer is closed that service file is removed and
then media keys are still bound to that service.

I get the above output for previous track, stop, play, pause and next
track media keys.

I do get the following output if neither is SMPlayer or Clementine is
running or if Clementine is running and playing audio and SMPlayer is
open, but no video is loaded:

org.gnome.Shell.desktop[2480]: Window manager warning: Overwriting existing
binding of keysym ffb5 with keysym ffb5 (keycode 54).
org.gnome.Shell.desktop[2480]: Window manager warning: Overwriting existing
binding of keysym 31 with keysym 31 (keycode a-e,12,f,10,11) <-- I collapsed
the range into a comma separated list

If you re-open SMPlayer and load a video, the media keys work and the
GDBus error doesn't occur but the above "Overwriting ..." messages still
get logged. Closing SMPlayer again does not restore media keys so that
Clementine can handle them. I had SMPlayer running ~17 hours ago.

Doing a shell reload doesn't seem to fix this either.

I can't really tell if this is an SMPlay/VLC/Video Player issue or
actually an issue in GSD, so filing here until someone can reassign to
the relevant project.

I hit this a while ago, while trying to get some debugging information
for a Clementine bug: https://github.com/clementine-
player/Clementine/issues/6320

If you need any other information let me know.

Thanks

[Bug 1825464] [NEW] New Upstream Release for Gnome Shell 3.32

2019-04-18 Thread Bruce Pieterse
Public bug reported:

When upgrading from Cosmic Cuttlefish to Disco Dingo with the gnome-
shell-extension-pomodoro installed in Cosmic, the extension is removed.
This is due to a lack of Gnome Shell 3.32 support which Disco now uses.

Two days ago, the author published a new version that supports Gnome
Shell 3.32. I was able to successfully build it a few minutes ago for
Disco, based off the Cuttlefish installation guide at
https://gnomepomodoro.org/

See https://github.com/codito/gnome-pomodoro/issues/416 for more
information on the issue.

Including this new upstream release will ensure that the extension is
still running once Cuttlefish users upgrade to Disco.

Please let me know if this report might need to be pushed upstream to
Debian to be packaged.

Thanks

[Bug 1783404] [NEW] unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000000000000230

2018-07-24 Thread Bruce Pieterse
Public bug reported:

About a week and a half ago I would lose rendering of the desktop
randomly while under a Wayland session. I would have the last displayed
images on my monitor, mouse movement worked, video and audio still
workedd, but visual feedback was lost when clicking on items in the
browser or last app opened. Spacebar would work fine to pause a video,
or media keys to stop the music player.

I've been trying to hunt down the reason until I realised that I might
be running under Wayland instead of Xorg. I changed the configuration
option in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf to disable Wayland and enabled debugging
and restarted.

I was away from my desk earlier when I logged, in a few minutes later
the screen went black, as if it went into power saving mode. Unlike the
Wayland sessions I wasn't able to get to any TTY's.

Upon restarting I noticed the following, which wasn't present in the
previous journal under Wayland (see attached - to large for description
field).

At this point, this seems to be occurring randomly. I'm happy to help
with debugging if need be.

A workaround for the Wayland sessions is to right-click on the file and
select "Open with X" where X is the default app or "Open with Other

I hope this helps a bit.

Thanks Brian,

Looks like libegl1 landed today. Picked it up with a normal apt update
and everything is good again.

[Bug 1752053] Re: nvidia-390 fails to boot graphical display

2018-03-01 Thread Bruce Pieterse
I've installed the packages from proposed and I can see that X can now
load the nvidia module, but out of curiosity, would it cause:

org.gnome.Shell.desktop[4934]: /usr/bin/gnome-shell: error while loading
shared libraries: libEGL.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such
file or directory

Due to that the following occurs:

gnome-session-binary[4911]: Unrecoverable failure in required component
org.gnome.Shell.desktop
gnome-session[4911]: gnome-session-binary[4911]: CRITICAL: We failed, but the
fail whale is dead. Sorry
gnome-session-binary[4911]: WARNING: App 'org.gnome.Shell.desktop' respawning
too quickly
gnome-session-binary[4911]: CRITICAL: We failed, but the fail whale is dead.
Sorry

$ locate -e libEGL.so.1
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa-egl/libEGL.so.1
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa-egl/libEGL.so.1.0.0

Any ideas, or should this specific library problem be reported against
gnome-shell?

[Bug 1722745] Re: Virtualbox service fails to start due to hanging plymouth --ping response

2017-11-29 Thread Bruce Pieterse
On my home PC, there are no plymouth processes after the boot up process
is complete and I have logged in. On my work machine however, where I am
having this problem, I have plymouth processes as described in comment
#4 after logging in and for the duration of the session (a few days).

The plymouth process as far as I know, is suppose to terminate before or
once the login screen is displayed.

[Bug 1722745] Re: Virtualbox service fails to start due to hanging plymouth --ping response

2017-10-16 Thread Bruce Pieterse
I have this problem again, however this time I updated a bunch of
packages and rebooted straight away and now have the problem after boot.

$ sudo systemctl virtualbox restart

Unknown operation virtualbox.

$ ps aux | grep plymouth
root 735 0.0 0.3 139000 28576 ?S08:37 0:00
@sbin/plymouthd --mode=boot --pid-file=/run/plymouth/pid --attach-to-session

root 1290 0.0 0.0 12936 1076 ?S08:37 0:00 /bin/plymouth
quit
root 1376 0.0 0.0 12936 1128 ?S08:37 0:00 plymouth --ping
root 1377 0.0 0.0 12936 1016 ?S08:37 0:00 plymouth --ping
root 1381 0.0 0.0 12936 1040 ?S08:37 0:00 plymouth --ping

Plymouth is waiting, quiting, pinging.

$ sudo service virtualbox restart is the only thing that works, but you
have to kill the latest plymouth --ping it spawns in order for the
service to start.

Starting the virtualbox service on boot can sometimes delay the boot up
process due to this bug.

[Bug 1722745] Re: Virtualbox service fails to start due to hanging plymouth --ping response

2017-10-11 Thread Bruce Pieterse
I didn't manually do it, as the above commands would automatically
restart it. modprobe vboxdrv loaded but I wasn't able to fire up the
VM's. I just did a soft reboot due to a large chunk of updates landing
and everything is working fine now.

I'll continue to monitor for the next week.

[Bug 1722745] [NEW] Virtualbox service fails to start due to hanging plymouth --ping response

2017-10-11 Thread Bruce Pieterse
Public bug reported:

I am unable to start any Vagrant VM's due to the virtualbox service not
being able to start or restart.

$ VBoxManage --version
WARNING: The character device /dev/vboxdrv does not exist.

  headers, most likely linux-headers-generic.

You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed.

I tried reinstalling the virtualbox-dkms package, but the process takes
a while to complete due to the virtualbox service timing out.

I have noticed that it only occurs with a single vagrant image in one of
my projects. I currently have six different vagrant images. When I have
some time available, I'll see if I can reproduce the crash reliably and
share the steps.

[Bug 1703196] Re: package libapache2-mod-php7.0 7.0.18-0ubuntu0.17.04.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2017-08-14 Thread Bruce Pieterse
I had a similar problem but with PHP 7.1 (see bug #1710007), turns out I
had another libapache2-mod-php5.6 for PHP 5.6 installed. I fixed it with
the steps below:

$ sudo apt-get remove --purge php*
$ dpkg -l | grep php
rc libapache2-mod-php5.6 5.6.30-1+deb.sury.org~yakkety+1 amd64 server-side,
HTML-embedded scripting language (Apache 2 module)
rc libapache2-mod-php7.1 7.1.8-1ubuntu1 amd64 server-side, HTML-embedded
scripting language (Apache 2 module)

$ sudo apt-get purge libapache2-mod-php*
$ sudo apt-get install php

Hope this helps the reporter.

2017-08-14 Thread Bruce Pieterse
Thanks Nish,

I think the problem was with libapache2-mod-php5.6 still being installed
from another ppa:

For users who might encounter this I did the following:

$ sudo apt-get remove --purge php*
$ dpkg -l | grep php
rc libapache2-mod-php5.6 5.6.30-1+deb.sury.org~yakkety+1
 amd64server-side, HTML-embedded scripting language (Apache 2
module)
rc libapache2-mod-php7.1 7.1.8-1ubuntu1

module)

$ sudo apt-get purge libapache2-mod-php*
$ sudo apt-get install php

[Bug 1679761] Re: file-roller crashed with SIGSEGV in g_closure_invoke()

2017-04-04 Thread Bruce Pieterse
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1603324 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1603324

** Description changed:

Crash occurs when selecting two or more zip files for extraction using
the context menu. Once the files are extracted two confirmation dialogue
boxes are presented but one is above the second one that says
  "Extraction completed successfully".

Clicking on Close on the first one dismisses the dialogue box, with the
second one now visible. When clicking on Close for the second one, it
hangs for a short while (1-2 seconds) and afterwards a crash report is
  ready to be submitted.

This issue is reproducible on my end. Only tested with zip files, not
sure if other archiving formats are affected as well.

[Bug 1670089] Re: gnome-shell Crashes shortly after login

2017-03-19 Thread Bruce Pieterse
Hi Jeremey,

Thanks for proposing possible solutions. I tried number 1, Sharing was
enabled with only Remote Desktop set to On. I disabled sharing
altogether and it seemed to have worked for two days and on the third
day it started again.

I did try number two on day 3, but never rebooted. Unfortunately, I had
a power failure in the area and my motherboard is now fried, so I am
unable to confirm if number two works correctly. I'll let you know later
in the week once I'm up and running again.

Regarding LP: #1559576, yes it's installed (I believe this got pulled in
recently as a dependency on gnome-shell):

xserver-xorg-legacy:
  Installed: 2:1.18.4-0ubuntu0.2
  Candidate: 2:1.18.4-0ubuntu0.2
  Version table:
 *** 2:1.18.4-0ubuntu0.2 500

Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 2:1.18.3-1ubuntu2 500
500 http://za.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/main amd64 Packages

Let me see if the Nvidia driver works now. I am using my work laptop
until my main machine is fixed (that's the one that generated this bug
report). Also, let me know if you want me to help you with some Nvidia
and GNOME related bugs this week.

Thanks

[Bug 1670089] Re: gnome-shell Crashes shortly after login

2017-03-06 Thread Bruce Pieterse
Hey dino99,

I haven't tried lightdm and I don't think I will. Reason being, I would
like to debug this issue further if it persists, but not 100% sure how
to do so, perhaps one of the devs can advise how I can debug something
like this.

Interesting development tonight though, I logged in and after about 20
seconds I switched to a tty, and caught what is attached to this
comment. Interesting enough, the fail whale occurred but my desktop was
still running (possible, but weird work-around?). After the crash
occurred I was also able to enable my backlight on my keyboard with
Scroll Lock, which usually won't happen after gnome-shell has crashed at
least once.

Definitely something wrong with
org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Sharing.desktop.

Regarding your reference to #1669374, that kinda looks like #1559576,
which I tried helping Tim Lunn get more information to debug and fix the
issue, but I don't think Alberto ever looked at my comment (#45).

Thanks

[Bug 1670089] [NEW] gnome-shell Crashes shortly after login

2017-03-05 Thread Bruce Pieterse
Public bug reported:

After logging in and after about 30-90 seconds gnome-shell will restart
and take me back to the login screen. I have script that enables the
backlight on my keyboard which is used at start up, but after logging in
this does not work. The same script is bound to Scroll Lock and doesn't
work after logging either. After logging in a second time, sometimes
three times due to a gnome-shell crash the shortcut works.

I've been having this problem for a few weeks now where gnome-shell just
restarts without an error report being generated.

This did not occur in 16.04 or 16.10.

[Bug 1581713] Re: Ubuntu Software asks for an Ubuntu Single Sign-On account to install/remove a snap

2016-09-25 Thread Bruce Pieterse
Unfortunately trying to login with Ubuntu One credentials with sudo snap
login em...@address.com returns error: cannot authenticate to snap
store: Provided email/password is not correct. (see "snap login --help")

I know these credentials are correct and also reflects the same
authentication failure currently present in gnome-software when trying
to install a snap as well.

[Bug 899878] Re: Software center have hardcoded colors and shows white font on white bg

2016-09-25 Thread Bruce Pieterse
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ * A user is unable to view the text within the software center
+ application which makes the application almost unusable.
+
+ * Ubuntu GNOME users that are currently using a dark theme with an LTS
+ release requested that the fix be backported to trusty from wily.
+
+ * This fix applies a custom style sheet for the dark variant of Ubuntu
+ GNOME Adwaita theme.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * In Ubuntu GNOME open Gnome Tweak Tool
+ * Enable the Global Dark Theme option under Appearances
+ * Launch Software Center
+ * You will find that text is translucent which is hard to read on the home
page.
+ * Click on any package. The package text is the same color as the background.
+ * Apply the fix
+ * Open software center and all text is now legible.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * None. This fix was applied in Wily.
+ * Fix for trusty was tested with both dark and light themes for both Ubuntu
Gnome and Ubuntu Unity.
+
+
  When using dark theme

[Bug 1575351] Re: tell me I have OS updates and will not install said updates.

2016-05-07 Thread Bruce Pieterse
I just want to add that it also does not know how to handle held
packages. I currently have the MongoDB PPA added to my system and
explicitly held the 3.0.10 packages for the M102 course I just
completed.

This is normally done with:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y mongodb-org=3.0.10 mongodb-org-server=3.0.10
mongodb-org-shell=3.0.10 mongodb-org-mongos=3.0.10 mongodb-org-tools=3.0.10

echo "mongodb-org hold" | sudo dpkg --set-selections
echo "mongodb-org-server hold" | sudo dpkg --set-selections
echo "mongodb-org-shell hold" | sudo dpkg --set-selections
echo "mongodb-org-mongos hold" | sudo dpkg --set-selections
echo "mongodb-org-tools hold" | sudo dpkg --set-selections

sudo apt-get upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
The following packages have been kept back:
  mongodb-org mongodb-org-mongos mongodb-org-server mongodb-org-shell
mongodb-org-tools
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 5 not upgraded.

If a package is held, it shouldn't really be counted as 1 update in
gnome-software and possibly skipped. At the moment, it tries to update
the packages, reloads then just shows them again as an update.

[Bug 1536771] Re: plymouthd crashed with SIGSEGV in script_obj_deref_direct() -> Parser error : Error opening file /lib/plymouth/themes/ubuntu-gnome-logo/ubuntu-gnome-logo.script

2016-05-02 Thread Bruce Pieterse
Thanks Lorenzo. This bug was when we didn't have a splash screen (was
just black) before the login screen. It's pretty interesting though, I
did encounter this problem yesterday after an upgrade from 15.10 to
16.04, but never got it again. I do suspect that this is a different
issue though.

If you are affected by this please can you do the following in a
terminal:

$ sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

On the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" line, add
"plymouth:debug" to that value so it becomes:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash plymouth:debug"

Save the file and then run:

$ sudo update-grub

Reboot when convenient.

This will log some debugging information out to /var/log/plymouth-
debug.log which you can then attach to this report. The above
instructions are flexible enough in case it occurs every second or third
