[Bug 2058838] Re: Crash

2024-03-25 Thread Byron
I am not close to running out of space. I am seeing a drm gpu error when
I switch back. It blinks and is gone, and then I prompted by gdm to
login again, my entire X session is gone. Wayland also has a similar
problem, except the gdm never comes back. Everything is frozen.

I don't think the syslog issue is related, but maybe. Let me know if
there is something you want me to do. I could also provide you access to
the machine via vpn. I haven't done it in a while, but I could attach
gdb to my session and see where it's crashing if this a difficult find.
It is reproducible every time. Something is telling me the problem is
related to the driver, and when the display goes away, the drm context
is getting released, and then accessed again. But take that with a grain
of salt, I haven't done any low level gpu development in 15 years.

[Bug 1971486] Re: Kernel Crash Ubuntu 5.15.0-27.28-generic 5.15.30

2022-05-04 Thread Byron
I have since rebooted the machine. I will try to catch it again next
time. I disabled the sound card on it, and it seems to be running better
overall. No more stutters. I think it has something to do with the timer
trying to bring the device online.

I will take a picture of it and post it when it happens again. It was
happening about every other day. I should see it again soon if that
didn't resolve the problem.

[Bug 1877746] Re: Lock screen not working

2020-05-12 Thread Byron
No, but I did do a dconf -f, and that at least lets me do it manually
now. It will not lock automatically.

Of course, it reset everything, which as introduced others problems.

Question, what call is exposed to applications to get to determine DPI?

I am having scaling issues in Maple 2017.3 and Maple 2020. If I use
Gnome (default) it works fine.

I am unable to get Wayland up.

It was a gnome config update that came down a couple of days ago.

I have two monitors, the left is 1920x1080 rotated left. The monitor on
the right is 3440x1440.

I use the keyboard bindings ctrl up arrow and down arrow.

This issue seems to be related to the saving the screen resolution
issue. If my left monitor gets switched back to vertical, workspaces
come back.

[Bug 1876797] [NEW] Numerous issues

2020-05-04 Thread Byron
Public bug reported:

I upgraded from 18.04 -> 20.04. After upgrade, it will not remember my
display configuration if I reboot. Settings can be saved (forced) into
Xconfig, but for some reason it ignores them.

I have a 1080p monitor vertical on my left, and a 1440p monitor on my
right.

Also, the system still believes I'm on Ubuntu 18.04.

[Bug 1779438] Re: Cannot resolve names using systemd-resolved stub resolver

2018-07-20 Thread Byron
Ok, thanks for the suggestion there Dimitri.

I ran a wireshark to see what happened when I pinged the hostname which
would inevitably fail, and I got nothing in wireshark. What I think is
happening and makes most sense is that the stub resolver is eating up my
DNS lookup and not forwarding it onto my nameserver. This is why there
is no network traffic for the ping as the resolve just fails inside the
stub resolver.

Is the nsswitch.conf a clue here?

hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns

Does that mean that if there is not hostname found, it returns and not
forwards to dns?

After the failed wireshark, I switched the /etc/resolv.conf to not point
to the stub-resolv.conf and all is well again.

I would still like to help fix this issue though.

[Bug 1779438] Re: Cannot resolve names using systemd-resolved stub resolver

2018-07-20 Thread Byron
This is a recent install, so haven't installed much apart from my usual
programs, vim, editors, etc...
I would expect to be able to ping by hostname without installing additional
software such as resolver libraries.

Here is my /etc/nsswitch.conf

`cat /etc/nsswitch.conf`
# /etc/nsswitch.conf
#
# Example configuration of GNU Name Service Switch functionality.
# If you have the `glibc-doc-reference' and `info' packages installed, try:
# `info libc "Name Service Switch"' for information about this file.

passwd: compat systemd
group: compat systemd
shadow: compat
gshadow:files

hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns
networks: files

protocols: db files
services: db files
ethers: db files
rpc:db files

netgroup: nis

Do additional libraries need installing from a full base install?

[Bug 1779438] [NEW] Cannot resolve names using systemd-resolved stub resolver

2018-06-30 Thread Byron
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
Release:18.04

I am running a clean install of Ubuntu 18.04.
This bug was also present for me on a clean install of Ubuntu 17.10 and I had a
solution, but it appears to no longer work.

What I expect to happen: Ping other hosts on network by name

What happened instead:
I can't ping other machines on network via name.
>From my Ubuntu 18.04 machine, I `ping ubuntu-test-1` and `ping
>ubuntu-test-1.localdomain` but neither work. I can ping by IP address though.

The other machines on the network are Ubuntu Server 16.04.3 machines and
can ping each other by name also.

All machines on network including problem one receive DHCP leases from
same server (192.168.20.1)

I believe the problem is systemd-resolved stub resolver.

`cat /etc/resolv.conf`
# This file is managed by man:systemd-resolved(8). Do not edit.
#
# This is a dynamic resolv.conf file for connecting local clients to the
# internal DNS stub resolver of systemd-resolved. This file lists all
# configured search domains.
#
# Run "systemd-resolve --status" to see details about the uplink DNS servers
# currently in use.
#
# Third party programs must not access this file directly, but only through the
# symlink at /etc/resolv.conf. To manage man:resolv.conf(5) in a different way,
# replace this symlink by a static file or a different symlink.
#
# See man:systemd-resolved.service(8) for details about the supported modes of
# operation for /etc/resolv.conf.

nameserver 127.0.0.53
search localdomain

If I change the nameserver line to the IP of my nameserver, not the stub,
resolution works.

nameserver 192.168.20.1
search localdomain

Now I can ping hosts by name.

I used to solve this problem like this...

`sudo systemctl disable systemd-resolved.service`
`echo "nameserver 192.168.20.1" | sudo tee -a
/etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/tail`
`sudo reboot`

But /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d no longer exists, and it's about time
this problem was fixed :)

[Bug 1503056] [NEW] Gnome screensaver disregards user settings

2015-10-05 Thread Byron Hawkins
Public bug reported:

When I lock the screen, the gnome-screensaver-command initiates the
screensaver within about 3 seconds. My system preferences indicate to
wait one hour before turning off the screen. This is a bug.

As a workaround for this blatantly incorrect behavior, I have changed my
lock command to the following:

gnome-screensaver-command -l && gnome-screensaver-command -d

This wakes the screen after a few seconds, so that my login screen stays
on.

The reason it is problem for the screen to turn off is that it often
loses connection and will not wake up again. After locking the screen,
sometimes I have to unplug the monitor's DisplayPort cable from the PC
and plug it back in again. Otherwise the monitor will not show what the
PC is doing, even though the PC is receiving commands and even allows me
to (blindly) login.

So it is imperative that the screensaver honor the user's system
settings. This is a bug. Please fix the implementation. Thanks.

[Bug 1451944] Re: Gnome-terminal in Ubuntu Unity shrinks to minimum size

2015-05-09 Thread Byron Collins
** Description changed:

When I open a terminal in Ubuntu 15.04, it shrinks to 1 character by 1
character. I can use the corner resizer to make the window bigger, but
it immediately shrinks to 1x1. There are a few x,y combinations that
allow the window to stay at the desired size, but if you're off by a
pixel, the window shrinks to 1x1.

  There is another question (http://askubuntu.com/questions/423733/gnome-
  terminal-in-kubuntu-shrinks-to-minimum-size), Gnome-terminal in Kubuntu
shrinks to minimum size, that is basically the same thing, but in KDE. I
  tried to follow the instructions:

- In KDE, go to System Settings. Return to the overview if you are not
+ In KDE, go to System Settings. Return to the overview if you are not
already there. In the Workspace Appearance and Behavior section, click
Window Behavior. In the area to the left, click the Window Rules icon.

but, there is no Workspace Appearance and Behavior section. I couldn't
find a similar setting in ccsm, gnome-tweak-tool or unity-tweak-tool.

[Bug 1406031] [NEW] Cannot connect to wifi having short password

2014-12-27 Thread Byron Hawkins
Public bug reported:

I can't connect to a wifi network with security "WPA & WPA2 Personal"
and a password of 7 ASCII characters. Of course this password is
invalid, but I can't change that, and I should be able to connect
anyway. Actually I could connect the first time, and after that it
wouldn't enable the "connect" button anymore. I hope we're not in the
business of policing other people's wifi... I really can't configure
their system, but if you relax the constraints on your side, then I can
have wifi access and work on my PhD project. Thanks for considering the
net value of policing other people.

** Affects: network-manager (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1273445] [NEW] Monitor does not wake on user input

2014-01-27 Thread Byron Hawkins
Public bug reported:

My display settings specify that the screen should be turned off after
one hour (in "Brightness & Lock"). When I return to the machine after
the screen has been turned off and press keys on the keyboard, the
screen won't come back on. I have tried moving the mouse, clicking the
mouse, unplugging and replugging the USB devices, and attaching another
USB device. The OS is simply ignoring user input. The only way to get a
screen is to unplug and replug the monitor. At that point, all the input
devices work normally, and I see all my keystrokes in the login dialog.
So the OS is failing to do the "turn on the screen now" thing when it is
most obviously aware of user input.

- What I was doing when the application crashed: I was not actually
doing anything, though Evolution was retrieving new messages from my

[Bug 1070150] Re: Intermittent black screen or low graphics mode message

2013-04-06 Thread Byron du Preez
I frequently experience black screen with cursor in top left and [OK] in
top right on boot (occasionally still experience low graphics mode
screen on boot too). More recently, I am starting to experience
frequent same black screens while I am trying to work as well. My non-
technical "workaround" for this problem (on boot or while I am working)
is to plug in a VGA cable into the back of my laptop (even with second
screen powered off). This gives me back my graphical screen and I can
continue working for awhile. When it happens again later, I unplug the
VGA cable and get my graphical screen back again. And so on, and so on
... Obviously, this is not a viable workaround, but only mentioning it
in the hope it might shed some light on this incredibly irritating
issue. My Ubuntu 12.10 is completely up-to-date and the problem still
persists. Since, the intermittent black screens only started last week
sometime, I assume a recent update has caused them. The low graphics
mode screens on boot seem less frequent, but black screens on boot occur
frequently.

Hi Dominique,

Sure thing. I have attached the modified and original files to this
email. The file that I have modified is 'fvwm-crystal.apps'. The original
file is 'fvwm-crystal.apps.bak'.

  I hope this helps.

[Bug 1153901] Re: su should exit with a message that root is locked

2013-03-12 Thread Byron Hawkins
If there isn't a root password, I don't think the system should ever
prompt the user for a root password. Check the web, tons of people find
this alarming and are convinced they are locked out of root. Whether it
makes sense or not, this is what people do experience and they are
reporting it on the web. I installed wubi 3 years ago and completely
forgot about whether setup asked for a root password. It was alarming
for "su" to prompt for a root password when I don't have one on file.
Others are also similarly alarmed by the "su" response, and there is
plenty of evidence publicly available.
