[Bug 1831747] [NEW] fixrtc hook requires e2fsprogs package, but that is not a dependency

2019-06-05 Thread Byte Commander
Public bug reported:

Package "initramfs-tools-core" provides "/usr/share/initramfs-
tools/hooks/fixrtc" which runs during the update or regeneration of the
initramfs and requires the file "/sbin/dumpe2fs" (available from
"e2fsprogs") to be present, otherwise it fails and aborts the whole
process, leading e.g. to an inconsistent package system.

The problem/cause seems to be that "initramfs-tools-core" package has no
direct or indirect hard dependency on "e2fsprogs".

I believe either the package dependency should be added, or the fixrtc
hook script should be rewritten so that it just outputs a warning
instead of aborting with a failure if missing "dumpe2fs" is not a
critical problem.

This issue seems to affect at least Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04. It has been
brought to my attention at https://askubuntu.com/q/1148791/367990

[Bug 1689825] Re: gnome-keyring not unlocked on boot

2017-07-19 Thread Byte Commander
It might have changed in the newer releases of Ubuntu, but on 16.04
(Unity desktop) `dbus-user-session` is NOT installed by default and NOT
a dependency of any standard packages.

I myself got it as dependency of Anbox. Now that this is gone, the only
remaining thing that points to this package is `dbus`, but as a
suggestion. Suggestions are optional dependencies that do not
automatically get installed unless you explicitly command `apt` to do
so.

Also if you would remove something which another (meta-)package
recommends or suggests (not hard dependencies), that wouldn't uninstall
this other package. And even if so, in case of the desktop meta-packages
like `ubuntu-desktop` it would not make a difference anyway, as these
don't have a function other than initially installing all stuff. No harm
in them being removed.

[Bug 1689825] Re: gnome-keyring not unlocked on boot

2017-07-14 Thread Byte Commander
Seems to me like `dbus-user-session` was the real culprit causing all the
trouble.
I got it installed with anbox and that is when the problem started.

I got my keyring daemon to correctly start, the Login keyring to unlock
automatically while still being encrypted with my account password again
this way:

- Purge `dbus-user-session`, e.g. by running `sudo apt purge dbus-user-session`
- Revert files in `/etc/pam.d` back to their original state. I had commented
out a line in `/etc/pam.d/lightdm` to work around the `gnome-keyring-daemon`
not starting in the correct mode issue.
- Set my account password on the Login keyring again (using seahorse). I had
removed the password and left the keyring unprotected to avoid being asked for
the password each session.
- Set my user account password to something completely different and then back
to my normal password using the `passwd` command. Before doing this, it seemed
like the Login keyring and account password weren't yet synced correctly
despite being equal. When I rebooted before the `passwd`, it still asked for
the keyring password to be entered manually.
- Reboot. On my next login, it asked for the Login keyring password to be
entered manually one last time, but offered a checkbox to enable unlocking that
keyring automatically on boot, which I checked.

After this procedure, my system seems to be as good as new again.
Running 16.04 with vanilla Unity desktop and lightdm btw.

[Bug 1626724] [NEW] Extracting iso changes target directory's permissions

2016-09-22 Thread Byte Commander
Public bug reported:

I have an ISO archive and opened it with file-roller. Then I clicked the
big [Extract] button, selected my Desktop as target directory (options
"Extract: All files" and "Actions: Keep directory structure" checked)
and confirmed. It extracted the files successfully, but also changed the
permissions of the target directory itself (to r-xr-xr-x).

This is not expected and not intended. Actually I could no longer create
or delete files in my Desktop directory after that, until I fixed the
permissions again. I confirmed the behaviour with a different location
as well.

Extracting anything into a location should never modify permissions of
the target location itself!

If you're interested, here's what I did (extracting to ~/Desktop/testdir
; the "Extract" dialog window can be seen at
https://i.stack.imgur.com/rlUvS.png):

$ ls -l Desktop/

$ file-roller test.iso

[Bug 1609469] [NEW] Battery reported as "discharging" when 100% charged although on AC power

2016-08-03 Thread Byte Commander
Public bug reported:

I'm on an Acer Aspire E5-773G which is currently connected to AC power
and has its battery fully charged.

Nevertheless, `upower` reports the battery status as "discharging" and
also the standard Unity power indicator shows the normal full-battery
icon (not charging) and a percentage of 100%.

ANd what is even more strange is that the battery's "energy-full" value
suddenly is bigger than "energy-full-design" although it used to slowly
decrease during the last months and was a few percent below last time I
checked.

This is the `upower --dump` output:

[Bug 1597886] Re: Strange Launchpad data appears on empty memory banks

2016-07-01 Thread Byte Commander
@Sebastien Bacher of course, thanks for your response.

My default locale is:

$ echo $LANG
en_GB.UTF-8

And here's the output of lshw with C locale:

$ LANG=C sudo lshw -c memory

This time the output is correct. You should add a check and fall back to
the untranslated C locale output instead of the generic Launchpad
translation string.

Please look at the information about bank 1 and bank 3 - these banks should be
empty, but instead some weird data about Launchpad is displayed.

This is a bug and should not happen. Please examine this issue and fix
it. Thanks.

[Bug 1594344] [NEW] lshw crashes with 'std::bad_alloc' and core dump if not run as root

2016-06-20 Thread Byte Commander
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1593233 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1593233

Public bug reported:

My System is Ubuntu 16.04, 64 bit, Unity desktop, kernel
`4.4.0-24-generic`, running on an Acer Aspire E5-773G notebook.

Running `lshw` (version `02.17-1.1ubuntu3.1`) from a terminal emulator
without `sudo` as normal user causes it to crash:

$ lshw
WARNING: you should run this program as super-user.
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::bad_alloc'
  what():  std::bad_alloc
Aborted (core dumped)

This seems to be reproducible, even after a clean reboot etc.

Please comment if you need further information or logs.

[Bug 1582876] Re: Unable to change user profile picture in 'user accounts'

2016-05-17 Thread Byte Commander
Confirming this behaviour.

It was not the case on a absolutely virgin install of 16.04 (about two
weeks ago), but now I have the same problem.

My suspicion is that one of the updates that were published since
Xenial's release contains a bug.

For Ubuntu Xenial (and probably all other releases receiving the same
malformed package), I have provided a workaround how to force installing
the package and let it overwrite the doubled file here at Ask Ubuntu:

[Bug 1520237] Re: Num LED state does not correspond with actual state after boot

2015-11-26 Thread Byte Commander
Same was the problem on 15.04.
If I remember right, it was not yet present on 14.10 though, but I might be
wrong.
Switching to another TTY and back also restores the LED state.
