[Bug 365874] Re: curl error: necessary data rewind wasn't possible

2013-02-26 Thread Callum Macdonald
I receive this error when pushing to a bzr+https:// repository since
installing pycurl. Prior to pycurl's installation, the push command
worked. Since I installed pycurl, it now throws the necessary data
rewind wasn't possible error. In my case, using https+urllib:// is not
an option as my host does not support the plain HTTPS protocol.

Is there a way to force bzr to use urllib insteasd of pycurl while also
using the bzr+https:// protocol? I tried bzr+https+urllib:// for
example, but that does not work.

[Bug 1039105] [NEW] SSL support

2012-08-20 Thread Callum Macdonald
Public bug reported:

There appears to be a branch of mod_rpaf which supports setting an SSL header,
according to this:
https://github.com/gnif/mod_rpaf#readme

I'm not very familiar with Ubuntu / Debian packaging, I can't figure out
where the code that version 0.6.7 is built from, I'm not sure if
multiple versions of mod_rpaf are being maintained. The GitHub version
supports a different option format with underscores added into the
configuration directives.

It would be great to see SSL support included in the version of mod_rpaf
in Ubuntu. The version on GitHub appears to be tagged as 0.8.2.

[Bug 523610] Re: rsyslogd spins CPU on some kernels

2012-06-24 Thread Callum Macdonald
I had what I believe to be the same issue on 12.04 Precise 2.6.32-12-pve
x86_64 running in a Proxmox container. I downloaded
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/r/rsyslog/rsyslog_4.2.0-2ubuntu8_amd64.deb,
installed, and now the error messages are no longer appearing.

Does this bug need to be re-opened? A new bug filed? It's showing fix-
released but apparently the issue (or a variation) still exists.

[Bug 968120] Re: Pressing alt clears text selection

2012-03-30 Thread Callum Macdonald
@Stefan: Right click, copy password is slightly slower for me than
double/triple clicking the password. I work around the bug by moving my
cursor off the Revelation window (which based on my settings makes
another window active) then using alt-tab.

[Bug 968120] [NEW] Pressing alt clears text selection

2012-03-29 Thread Callum Macdonald
Public bug reported:

I reported this bug some time ago on a previous Ubuntu version and it
was marked as invalid, but it definitely still exists. I've tested on a
Guest session, and the bug exists there.

I don't know if the bug is Revelation wide, or specific to Ubuntu, so
I'm reporting it here first.

Steps to recreate:
1) Create a new password file
2) Create a new password entry
3) Preferences General Passwords Display passwords and other secrets
check
4) Double / triple click password to select text
5) Press the alt key

At this point, the text selection disappears and the cursor is flashing
at the start of the password.

The typical workflow for me is select password, alt-tab back to
application, middle click to paste password. This bug breaks this
workflow because pressing alt clears the text selection.

[Bug 614362] Re: Evolution does not update messaging indicator highlight if message status changes to read

2011-05-06 Thread Callum Macdonald
This bug exists for me also on Ubuntu 11.04 / Evolution 2.32.2-0ubuntu7,
and has existed since the indicators were first introduced.

I notice that when a new messages is received, if I click it and CTRL-K
or Message Mark As Read, the Messaging Indicator does not update.
However, if I double click the message (to open it) then, the messaging
indicator updates. In fact, the indicator updates if I open any message
at all, but not based on mark as read / unread.

[Bug 777777] [NEW] Mark read / unread only works once in message window

2011-05-05 Thread Callum Macdonald
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Open a read message in its own window, CTRL-SHIFT-K to mark as unread,
now CTRL-K does not work.

Open an unread message in its own window, CTRL-K to mark as read, now
CTRL-SHIFT-K does not work.

This can also be seen in the menus. Open an unread message and Message
Mark As Read is available, Unread is greyed out. Click Read, now open
the menu again, Read is still the only option available. It seems like
when message status is changed, the message window doesn't update to
notice the new state.

Note that the message is marked as read / unread, just that the menu
does not change in the Evolution window. This applies when opening
messages in separate windows, not while viewing messages in the preview
pane.

[Bug 777777] Re: Mark read / unread only works once in message window

2011-05-05 Thread Callum Macdonald
I read that bug before posting, it sounds similar but not the same. Yes,
I am using IMAP, but this bug exists for me on both IMAP and local
folders.

It's not quite the same as bug 636980 because mails are correctly marked
as read after 1.5 seconds, or I can change their status once from within
the message window. So the functionality appears to work, it's just that
the menu doesn't activate / deactivate based on the message's status.

For example, if I open a read message in a new window then go to the
main folder view and mark that message as unread, I still only have
Message Mark Unread in the message window, even though the message
is already unread.

Please let me know if I haven't explained clearly enough and I can
create a screencast to demonstrate.

[Bug 285890] Re: Does not show encrypted partition

2011-02-27 Thread Callum Macdonald
Here's the notes I have from installing 10.04 on top of an existing
encrypted disk. I think it might be a little easier than using the
terminal, but maybe not.

* Backup /etc/crypttab
* Boot new CD, choose rescue
* Enter passphrase for encrypted disk
* At choose root partition, Back, to menu
* Go to partition disks
* Select partitions, remember /boot
* Format root partition and /boot, leave others
* Continue with installation
* Restore /etc/crypttab
As per http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1205372

I agree, I think this (or #420080) is release critical. Wiping encrypted
data without warning is totally uncool!

[Bug 401545] Re: texlive depends on docs that take up more space than the software

2010-06-14 Thread Callum Macdonald
Here's what I believe to be a copy of LPPL version 1.3c to which you refer:
http://www.latex-project.org/lppl/lppl-1-3c.txt

Are you willing to explain on what basis you feel this license prohibits
distribution of a Compiled Work without the accompanying documentation
components?

Under clause 2, distributing part of the Work is considered a Derived
Work. Under clause 6, this is allowed under four requirements.

Clause 6a refers to components of the Work which are direct
replacements. That does not apply to a Derived Work without
documentation, the components are not direct replacements, they are the
original components. Clauses 6b likewise does not apply, there are no
modifications to individual components, simply the omission of other
components (the documentation). Clause 6c does not apply. Clause 6d is
met by having the doc debs available in the same repositories.

[Bug 594289] [NEW] Publishing a calendar generates a confirmation dialog

2010-06-14 Thread Callum Macdonald
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Since upgrading from Jaunty to Lucid, evolution has been generating a
confirmation dialog each time a calendar is automatically published. I
can't find any way to disable this. Under Jaunty, the calendar was
published silently each time.

The new behaviour is a real inconvenience, I really don't need to know
each day when the calendar is published, and I frequently get caught
with the dialog on another desktop so I'm unable to use Evolution until
I find it and click OK.

[Bug 401545] Re: texlive depends on docs that take up more space than the software

2010-06-13 Thread Callum Macdonald
= Personal experience =

I wanted to install lyx and was horrified to see the download would be 438MB
which would translate to 745MB of disk usage. After a little investigation, it
turns out more than 70% of the download and almost 60% of the disk space was
documentation. I looked through all the dependencies but was thoroughly lost. I
couldn't figure out the tree of dependencies that caused every documentation
package to be installed. Instead I created an equivs package to avoid
installing all the -doc packages. For anyone else finding this bug, I published
the package here:
http://www.callum-macdonald.com/2010/06/12/installing-lyx-without-the-bloat/

Through further research it seems like a simpler solution might be to
exclude the recommended packages. I'll update my post once I figure out
the details.

= History =

Norbert, you said this has been discussed on the Debian bug tracking
system and debian tex-maint mailing list. Is that correct?

I found a bug, but I'm struggling to find anything in the mailing list.
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=515051

Do you know specifically where I can find the previous discussions? Or
suggestions on how to find them? I've run several searches on the debian
mailing list search, but I've been unable to find anything relevant.
http://lists.debian.org/search.html

= Licensing =

In debian bug 515051 you said 'It is not necessarily a case of prefer
but of license ...'. I took this to mean that the license of texlive /
tex requires that the documentation be included. Is that an accurate
interpretation of what you meant?

I found what I believe to be the texlive license here:
http://www.tug.org/texlive/LICENSE.TL

I don't see anything in that document that specifies a need for
documentation to be included in distributions. Perhaps I've
misunderstood something here. Can you point me in the right direction?

= Philosophy =

I feel like having the packages at recommends might offer a good
solution for users familiar with apt and dependency choices. Personally,
this issue is the first time I've ever come to realise that recommended
packages are installed by default. I've been an Ubuntu user for about 3
years and consider myself fairly technically minded. It's something that
had simply never crossed my path.

For a user like myself, changing the packages to suggest would save me
320Mb of download bandwidth. In my personal circumstances, and most
likely, to anyone not living in the first world, that's a significant
amount of data. In the case of a user wanting to install lyx, I feel
strongly that the documentation for the underlying packages is not
necessary.

I believe Ubuntu has a strong focus on usability. I searched for a
reference for that belief. I found only references on wikipedia dating
back to 2006. If that focus on usability has changed, I think it makes
sense to leave the doc packages at recommends. If not, if Ubuntu still
aims to be linux for human beings, then I think the best option to serve
that aim is to switch the doc packages to suggests instead.

[Bug 591500] Re: Gnome Screensaver Doesn't Fade Out

2010-06-08 Thread Callum Macdonald
Not sure if this is a bug or a feature, but I have noticed the same
behaviour after a recent update to gnome-screensaver.

[Bug 590803] [NEW] Version 1.67 for Lucid?

2010-06-07 Thread Callum Macdonald
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin-facebookchat

Version 1.67 is included in Maverick but not Lucid. Can we have it for
Lucid please? I've had no issues installing the upstream packages
(released by the pidgin-facebookchat project).

[Bug 260060] Re: prepend domain-name-servers ignored for ppp0

2009-10-09 Thread Callum Macdonald
I'm not able to test this any more as I no longer use a dial up
connection (left Australia so no more 3g card!). Hopefully somebody else
can test to see if this issue still exists.

[Bug 420080] [NEW] Configure encrypted volumes destroys existing data

2009-08-27 Thread Callum Macdonald
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

I was running Ubuntu 8.10 32-bit, with an encrypted partition and LVM. I
went to install Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit, hoping to reuse the same LVM
volumes, just replacing the volume for /, leaving /home and so on
intact.

I fired up the 9.04 installer, got to partitioning. I chose manual, saw
my two partitions listed, both marked do not use. I activated the
second partition and chose physical volume for encryption. Now to see
the data, I selected Configure encrypted volumes. At this point a
message appears asking me if I'm happy with the partitions, I choose
yes, I'm asked for an encryption passphrase, I enter it, twice. At this
point, I'm suspicious, I reboot to my existing 8.04 installation. My
encrypted partition has been completely destroyed, there is no LVM
available and no data.

The text in the installer should make it absolutely clear that when you
choose yes at the Configure encrypted volumes option, this will
destroy any encrypted data on the partition.

Thankfully I had sufficient backups. What seemed like a routine install
actually destroyed all my data. :-(

[Bug 320627] Re: syndaemon blocks buttons and trackpoint

2009-04-07 Thread Callum Macdonald
The message asking for lspci output said it was an automated message.
I've attached a copy of the output. Is the xorg.log file also required?
Is there anything sensitive in the log that I should remove?

[Bug 320627] [NEW] syndaemon blocks buttons and trackpoint

2009-01-23 Thread Callum Macdonald
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

I have a Lenovo X301 with a dual trackpad / trackpoint device.

cyndaemon disables:
* Trackpad movement during typing
* Clicking of all buttons during typing

The physical buttons should still be accessible while I'm typing. At the
very least, only the buttons on the trackpad itself (not the trackpoint
buttons) should be disabled.

As a workaround I have disabled trackpad tapping altogether with
gsynaptics (I only use the trackpad for circular scrolling).

[Bug 260060] [NEW] prepend domain-name-servers ignored for ppp0

2008-08-21 Thread Callum Macdonald
Public bug reported:

/etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf:
prepend domain-name-servers 127.0.0.1;

Works as expected for wlan0 and eth0, but not ppp0. When I connect to a
wireless / wired network (using NetworkManager) the server is prepended.
When I connect to a gsm modem (using GnomePPP or NetworkManager 0.7) the
server is not prepended, only the servers supplied by DHCP are written
to /etc/resolv.conf.
