Honestly I wouldn't concern yourself with it at this point. Ubuntu 18.04
is due out in just over two weeks.

I actually don't think uninstalling nvidia & reinstalling is good
enough. gdm3 has to be removed.

Yeah, apparently 17.10 wasn’t tested thoroughly before release.

And yes, #60 works. Just make sure lightdm is installed.

Sorry you can't get it working, that's all I can think of. My advice
would be to just go back to 17.04 and install Gnome there if you want
the Gnome experience.

Good luck! I went through several tries to get it right. Make sure after
removing gdm that lightdm is installed.. that's key. And if you get a
login screen, be sure to use Xorg. Those two things SHOULD get you on
the right track hopefully.

[Bug 1705369] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 boots to black screen when using Nvidia drivers (on a desktop with an Intel GPU)

2017-11-01 Thread CaptSaltyJack
Bernadette:

Just to make sure, did you try the below in this exact order?

sudo apt purge gdm3
(optional step if lightdm is not auto installe) sudo apt install -y lightdm
sudo apt purge nvidia*
sudo apt install linux-headers-$(uname -r)
sudo apt install nvidia-384

This worked for me. At the lightdm login screen, I had to choose "Ubuntu
on Xorg" as the default environment before logging in. Wayland does not
work at all.

Your kernel should be ok. You may be experiencing an unrelated issue.
17.10 is kind of a mess.

Did the steps above on my laptop. It works, though the "Ubuntu" login

You're right :) I skipped the nvidia part. Just wanted to see how the VM
would behave if I purged gdm. Then I realized lightdm was not installed,
so that would be an extra step on that list.

Thanks, everyone

Just wanted to weigh in: simply adding "nomodeset" to my kernel command
line worked! I was able to use the proprietary NVidia drivers, no
problem. I'm on a ThinkPad T570.

It looks like due to this change, I'm using X11 instead of Wayland. I
don't know if I care either way, everything works great and the graphics
are snappy. Hopefully Wayland will be ready by the time 18.04 launches.

[Bug 1602964] [NEW] MySQL consumes mega amounts of RAM

2016-07-14 Thread CaptSaltyJack
Public bug reported:

On a fresh install of Ubuntu 16.04, MySQL eats up way too much RAM due
to poor config settings out of the box. I'm suggesting maybe someone
tune it for a 512MB server.

As an example, I have a 1GB AWS EC2 instance running. I installed MySQL,
and did nothing beyond that. I came back about a couple hours later, and
the RAM consumption (according to htop) is 656/991MB! htop shows several
MySQL processes consuming 60% MEM. Again, this is for a DB process that
doesn't even have any databases, and zero activity.

How do we know these two bugs are not exactly the same? It's the same
laptop and same symptoms, no?

I'll test the kernel referenced above ASAP and report back here.

[Bug 1261886] Re: [Lenovo ThinkPad S431] Boots up after shutdown

2013-12-21 Thread CaptSaltyJack
This bug existed as of 13.04 for sure. 12.10, not sure, but I can't
install that on my laptop as it's a production laptop with work on it.

What else can we do to move towards a solution for this bug??

Is there anything else we can do to help test/diagnose? This is a very
annoying issue and I'd love to see it resolved by 14.04.

[Bug 1234846] [NEW] Touchpad options missing drag lock feature

2013-10-03 Thread CaptSaltyJack
Public bug reported:

This has been an issue for quite some time, and I think it deserves some
serious attention for the 14.04 LTS release.

There is no way to enable/disable (or adjust) drag lock in Ubuntu
without going into a shell and using xinput. It would be nice to have a
checkbox to enable/disable drag lock, and possibly set the lock timeout
value as well, though a hardcoded value might work OK too. I have my
Synaptics Locked Drags Timeout to 500 and it feels like a good natural
delay. (the user can always tap again while locked to force unlock like
on other OSs).

[Bug 1230359] Re: ThinkPad S431 boots up after shutdown, twice

Just to double check, because I'm on a machine that I rely on for work:

I can grab the packages here: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v3.12-rc2-saucy/

And after installing them with dpkg, I can always choose to boot on the
regular 3.8.0 kernel, correct?

2013-09-20 Thread CaptSaltyJack
Yes, thank you. Please keep this ticket active. It *IS* an issue and is
quite annoying, as every time I have to shut down my laptop, I have to
let it boot up, go into the BIOS and hit power off, then it boots up
again and I have to hit power off again. And I thought it was due to the
fact that my laptop has the new UEFI standard, but I switched to legacy
BIOS mode and it still happens.

[Bug 1157909] Re: Thinkpad T430u reboots twice after suspend then shutdown

2013-09-04 Thread CaptSaltyJack
This affects me as well. ThinkPad S431, using UEFI (not legacy boot). I
don't need to put the machine in suspend though. I can just shut down
Ubuntu, and the computer turns off then turns back on again. So I reboot
into the BIOS and hit the power button to turn the laptop off. Once
again it boots up, I go into the BIOS, hit power, and then it stays off.
I think this is related to UEFI.

[Bug 1172934] Re: empathy notification wrong sender name

2013-08-12 Thread CaptSaltyJack
What I think you mean is, in the notification menu, when you get an
incoming message, it shows your own name rather than the person you're
talking to.

I've discovered what causes this: if you start a conversation with
someone, your own name is shown in the notification menu. The other
party has to initiate the conversation in order for it to show their
name (obviously this is a bug).

I'm seeing this issue in Ubuntu 12.04.02 LTS. Out of nowhere, bayes_toks

[Bug 1007689] [NEW] Lightdm fails to load because NVidia nv kernel isn't loaded yet

2012-06-01 Thread CaptSaltyJack
Public bug reported:

This has been a bug since 11.10 at least. Booting up, I get put into a
text shell rather than the lightdm greeter.

The problem is, the nv kernel hasn't loaded yet so lightdm fails. If you
look at the attached /etc/init/lightdm.conf (if it's attached), I had to
insert sleep 5 before the line exec lightdm to make it wait a few
seconds for the nv kernel. This resolves the issue.

It would be great to see this fixed by 12.10. The bug has been around
for way too long and is a critical one.

[Bug 874434] [NEW] Can no longer tab between file/app results in Dash

2011-10-14 Thread CaptSaltyJack
Public bug reported:

In 11.04, you could bring up the dash and type something, then tab
through results. Now tab switches lenses. This is a usability issue. A
user would expect tab to skip through results in a list, not switch
lenses. I'd recommend another key combo to switch between lenses (such
as ctrl+space, alt+space, etc).

2011-10-14 Thread CaptSaltyJack
Agreed, tab/shift-tab should move forward/backward through files or apps
within a lens. And ctrl-tab/ctrl-shift-tab should move between lenses.
Right now, tab == ctrl-tab which doesn't make sense.

[Bug 836854] Re: [dash] Cannot press tab to switch keyboard focus to results

2011-08-30 Thread CaptSaltyJack
True, but what about the second or third results? Tabbing is an
intuitive action one would expect to be able to skip to other items,
however it does not work. Arrow keys work but it takes two arrow downs
to get to the results for some reason. I vote for tabs, though.. easier
reach than arrow keys.

[Bug 836974] [NEW] Dual monitor setup causes positioning issues

2011-08-29 Thread CaptSaltyJack
Public bug reported:

I've observed two position bugs running a dual monitor setup under
11.04:

1) libnotify popups appear in the upper right corner of the 2nd monitor, way
out of my area of visual focus.
2) Some apps (Libre Office) pop up their splash screen in a weird spot on the
1st monitor toward the right edge of the screen (as if it's calculating the
center in between the two monitors).

is for the whole state of Ubuntu and making it ready for prime time.
This is one of the big reasons Ubuntu is NOT ready for prime time,
launching 10.04 (LTS, mind you) partially broken out of the box. It just
seems logical that the Ubuntu dev team would snatch up any new Asus Eee
models and test the earlier 10.04 builds on those machines to make sure
they work, because Eee PC + Linux is such a hot combo. Makes me wonder
what the heck they were testing 10.04 on!

Anyway, enough bitching from me. :) Rolf, could you please tell me how I
can get wireless working?

Thanks, Rolf, you rock! Yay, Rolf.. boo, developers. ;)

BTW, do I just follow the instructions on that page on how to install
the PPA? Add ppa:r0lf/ppa to the repo and do an apt-get update followed
by apt-get upgrade?

[Bug 521967] Re: support for new atheros wifi chipset - AR2427/ath9k

2010-05-01 Thread CaptSaltyJack
Hey look, I realize Ubuntu is free.. and I usually buy each version to
donate. But, I'm really disappointed the final 10.04 release did not fix
this issue. My 1001P still cannot use the wireless adapter OOTB, and I
have no idea how to fix this. This has been a known issue quite some
time, did no one think it was important enough to address or what?
Especially with such a popular netbook line as the Eee PCs, I would've
expected this to be resolved.

[Bug 110585] Re: Compaq Proliant DL360: raid controller should use cpqarray, not sym53c8xx

2008-01-09 Thread CaptSaltyJack
tad: Not sure if your issue has anything to do with the
cpqarray/sym53c8xx module issue. Maybe you ought to file a separate bug
report? I don't mean to dismiss your problem, just trying to keep this
particular bug discussion on topic.
