[Bug 1807047] Re: sync hd-media FLOPPY_SIZE with debian

2019-06-24 Thread Carl Karsten
This does not fit:

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-server/daily/pending/
eoan-server-amd64.iso.zsync 2019-06-24 06:53754M

just to be sure:
wget.. unzip... like above
cp: error writing 'mnt/eoan-server-amd64.iso': No space left on device

Can we please bump FLOPPY_SIZE
or should I file a bug against the iso for being too big? ;)

[Bug 645404] Re: Support Private PPAs

2019-03-14 Thread Carl Karsten
please consider the CI case: headless process that runs periodically for
months without user interaction.

something like: deploy a private key (or similarly sensitive secret)
file and a publicly readable script (apt-add-repository...) and it just
runs, no browser, no user, no typing.

2018-12-09 Thread Carl Karsten
why this?
  ubuntu-18.10-server-amd64.iso
It isn't listed on
http://releases.ubuntu.com/cosmic/
I did find it on:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/18.10/release/

717M does fit so good.

What for?
hd-media installer needs it
https://launchpad.net/iso-scan
"""
debian-installer component to scan hard drives for an installer ISO image.
This is used in installer builds for removable USB drives.
"""

higher level goal: hd-media/boot.img is an fs I can mount, cp a replacement
boot loader syslinux.cfg file, done.
.iso is a read only fs, so not as easy to replace the file.

Public bug reported:

Using this
d-i passwd/user-fullname string Video Team User

I am prompted for a username, defaults to "video"

I accept that default, and it tells me it is invalid.

I'm guessing thing that constructed the username should check against
the blacklist mentioned here:

[Bug 1714167] Re: Netboot fails with - Unable to install the selected kernel - message while installing Ubuntu 17.10

2017-09-13 Thread Carl Karsten
I get the same error:

An error was returned while trying to install the kernel into
the target system.
  Kernel package: 'linux-generic'.

Which seems to be this error:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/debian-installer/+bug/1717038

Try this to confirm:
alt-f2, enter
# in-target ping googgle.com
(no output, wait about 20 seconds or so for it to return to the prompt)
alt-f4 you should see:

Sep 13 21:51:37 in-target: ping: google.com: Temporary failure in name
resolution

[Bug 1628659] Re: "d-i partman/unmount_active boolean true" not working

2017-06-19 Thread Carl Karsten
I get the same message, and I have:

d-i partman/unmount_active boolean false

My case:
I have a 2nd usb stick with ubuntu-16.04.2-server-amd64.iso
the installer mounts it under /cdrom, and then asks me if I want to unmount it
so it can step on it.
perhaps this should be a special case?

Anyway, I wonder what the relation is between unmount_active and
"Do you want the installer to try to unmount...?"

Seems squid-deb-proxy is deliberately strict by default, if the user
wants to use ppas, they need to enable this.

[Bug 1587889] Re: Installing grub on '/dev/md126p1 system doesn't boot

2016-06-08 Thread Carl Karsten
More info:

I am installing onto two servers that I bought used. I have no idea how
they were configured. The hope was that the installer would just
replace whatever was there.

I did get 2 dialogs:
(from memory)
1. Do you want to enable raid?
2. do you want to enable serial ata? (made me think "sata is not enabled by
default?" but it was not that. )

The first time I answered Yes to both, the 2nd time no. no difference.

[Bug 889656] Re: installer stops using proxy

2011-11-15 Thread Carl Karsten
@broder: take over all you want - I mostly agree with you and I don't
think I have anything else to offer.

I agree squid-deb-proxy is at fault.

I am not sure I agree that installing it should interfere with the
install process.

for instance, if the installer uses dhcp, but I configure the target
with a static IP, I would not expect that IP get used until the install
is finished and reboots into the new system.

But this just in from #ubuntu-installer:

(01:38:50 PM) cjwatson: CarlFK: the installer should rely on /target
being functional.  I think your previous bug is good enough, though;
this is a one-off issue with squid-deb-proxy-client, and I don't think
it's worth trying to solve generically - we'll just figure out how to
deal with that issue

My guess is that apt-avahi-discover should not return http://:/; ever;
if it can't find a proxy for whatever reason, it should return and
let the calling code figure out what to do. I also guess we are all in
agreement on this.

Getting the daemon to run so that a proxy is detected is up for debate.
Personally I want the installer to keep using the on I specified, but I
am not sure it would cause a problem if it didn't.

[Bug 890872] [NEW] maximum_object_size 512 MB not vaild per doc

2011-11-15 Thread Carl Karsten
Public bug reported:

The value is specified in kilobytes...
http://www.squid-cache.org/Doc/config/maximum_object_size/

maximum_object_size 512 MB
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/precise/squid-deb-proxy/precise/view/head:/squid-deb-proxy.conf#L35

My guess is that is only 500K, and it is not caching the larger .debs.
The net-installer had issues with offline_mode that went away when I
changed 512 to 10512.

regardless of if MB works, the config should really conform to the docs.

(05:02:57 PM) broder: anyway, i argue that the real bug is that
apt-avahi-discover prints out something (and even worse, something starting
with http://;) when it can't find anything
(05:03:27 PM) broder: if it exited without printing anything when it didn't
find a result, apt would ignore it and everything would be fine

[Bug 889656] [NEW] installer stops using proxy

2011-11-12 Thread Carl Karsten
Public bug reported:

net install behind a squid proxy. target can only access web via
squid. it gets almost done, and fails to install grub. enable
forwarding on squid box, retry, install finishes.

looking at syslog, it looks like it is failing to get some language
related packages.

But what seems to be the show stopper:
Could not connect to us.archive.ubuntu.com:80 (91.189.92.182), connection
timed out

I also see this in the mist:
Nov 12 21:20:36 net/hw-detect.hotplug: Detected hotpluggable network interface
eth0
maybe it re-configured the net stuff, including the proxy? prolly not, just
seemed worth a mention.

here is my idea of the important parts of the log - attached full syslog
to the point of can't install grub message.

[Bug 889687] [NEW] install server, fails to to start with invalid config

2011-11-12 Thread Carl Karsten
Public bug reported:

sudo apt-get install isc-dhcp-server
installing...
starting ... [fail]

Personally I don't actually want it to start - you don't want to bring
up a dhcp server on install, it will most likely break your network.

So pretty much just remove the 'start server' part of the install
scripts.

And then maybe setup a valid config that is similar to what wifi APs do:

subnet 192.168.1.0  netmask 255.255.255.0 {
range 192.168.1.10 192.168.1.254 ;
option broadcast-address 192.168.1.255;
option routers  192.168.1.1 ;
}

dns is 'tricky' - APs have a dns forwarder, dhcpd does not (fine.)
I would be happy if the install grabbed what was currently in
/etc/resolve.conf:
$ grep nameserver /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 192.168.1.7

option domain-name-servers 192.168.1.7;

yeah, it isn't quite that easy, but it's very doable.

** Affects: isc-dhcp (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

2011-09-01 Thread Carl Karsten
I just noticed I left out a small detail:
pxe boot config include
ipappend 2

http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/SYSLINUX#IPAPPEND_flag_val_.5BPXELINUX_only.5D

Which is where the BOOTIF=01-00-14-22-94-06-6a BOOT_IMAGE.. came from.
Which cjwatson knows, but someone else might not, so now they do.

[Bug 728710] Re: d-i apt-setup/local0/repository not working

2011-07-04 Thread Carl Karsten
Yep, removed proxy, apt-setup/local0/repository got added to
etc/apt/sources.list.

I see 2 or 3 bugs here: I'll be happy to open new bugs if someone asks.

1. If this is the only reason to enable the proxy: # use the proxy for
wgets (should speed things up)
don't use the proxy. I suspect there are more reasons, like the proxy is the
only way to get to the internet, so not using it will be good for my case but
bad for some other case. We should be sure there is a case that would be bad
though. like maybe proxying keys are bad and shouldn't be done anyway, so if
it was working it should be fixed to not work.

2. squid-deb-proxy needs to handle this. Whatever this is.

3. d-i needs to error when this errors. failing silently is bad.

[Bug 805773] [NEW] ubuntu keserver uses port 11371

2011-07-04 Thread Carl Karsten
Public bug reported:

I use squid-deb-proxy to speed up netboot installs with this preseed line:
d-i mirror/http/proxy string http://g2a.personnelware.com:8000/

I also add some extra repositories:
d-i apt-setup/local0/repository string
http://ppa.launchpad.net/carlfk/ppa/ubuntu natty main
d-i apt-setup/local0/key string
http://keyserver.ubuntu.com:11371/pks/lookup?op=getsearch=0x2EB11AEDA224C43C

The installer tries to get the key via the proxy, which fails, and so
the repository is not used.

Here is the code that does that:
/usr/lib/fetch-url/http

# use the proxy for wgets (should speed things up)
if db_get mirror/$proto/proxy; then
export ${proto}_proxy=$RET
fi

The solution seems to be to add 11371 to the ports allowed.

[Bug 728710] [NEW] d-i apt-setup/local0/repository not working

2011-03-03 Thread Carl Karsten
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

I have this in my presseed file (attached):

d-i apt-setup/local0/repository string
http://ppa.launchpad.net/carlfk/ppa/ubuntu maverick main
d-i apt-setup/local0/comment string Carls PPA
d-i apt-setup/local0/source boolean true
d-i apt-setup/local0/key string
http://keyserver.ubuntu.com:11371/pks/lookup?op=getsearch=0x2EB11AEDA224C43C

It does not get added to /etc/apt/sources.list

Doesn't work in natty either. It worked in ibex, I think worked in
jaunty, I don't know if it works in lucid.

[Bug 728033] [NEW] firewire - blocked for more than 120 seconds

2011-03-02 Thread Carl Karsten
Public bug reported:

I have the problem in #371434 - following the advice I added acpiphp to
/etc/modules, rebooted.

I think tried pugging/unplugging various firewire express cards and an
esata express card. tail /var/log/syslog showed the cards coming and
going. good.

Then I hooked up a dv cam to firewire, tried pugging/unplugging the same
cards, various results, Then plugged in a card, nothing logged, then:

[Bug 714686] [NEW] url detection inclues in foourl/foo

2011-02-07 Thread Carl Karsten
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

when this text is on the screen:
  linkhttp://blip.tv/file/4720262/link
I can point the mouse at it, right click, select Open Link but
http://blip.tv/file/4720262 gets opened in the browser and because of the
it 404s.

According to http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2396.txt is not part of a valid URL

The angle-bracket and and double-quote () characters are
excluded because they are often used as the delimiters around URI in
   text documents and protocol fields.
