@paulw2u that's indeed the case, I validated the checksum of the iso
image and rewrote it to the usb thumbstick. It worked now.

[Bug 1811169] Re: Device firmware update does not detect AC power

2019-01-15 Thread Carroarmato0
Maybe a small detail which may have an impact: the laptop has SecureBoot
enabled by default.
During the installation, the Ubuntu installer made me go about setting a
password.

After installing Virtualbox I noticed that I had to do some extra steps
into signing the compiled kernel module.

I have followed the procedures correctly, but afterwards decided to turn
off Secure Boot just to not wanting to deal with the upgrade hassle in
the future.

I don't remember between which boots I disabled SecureBoot and when I
started the firmware update successfully.

I do remember the annoyance of the firmware upgrade processes beeping
every couple of seconds during the long procedure, in an open workspace
environment. Because it's usually a bad idea to terminate a firmware
flash right in the middle I had to run away with my "ticking timebomb".
But I divert, this has nothing to do with actually setting up the
firmware upgrade through Gnome-Software/fwupd.

2019-01-15 Thread Carroarmato0
Sorry for the delay in following up.

Based on the logs I've checked, fwupd has been behaving correctly, no
where in the various boot logs have I seen it crash or output anything
that would look like an issue.

However, I've been seeing many issues from Gnome Software.

[Bug 1811169] Re: Device firmware update does not detect AC power

2019-01-10 Thread Carroarmato0
After a reboot, clicking on the Update buttons don't complain about
connecting to the AC power.

The options briefly disappear, and then reappear, seemingly as if the
options weren't accepted.

But after another reboot, the bios noticed that there were pending
updates and went on to apply both of them after 2 reboots.

After the whole procedure the updates don't appear anymore in the
Software center, making me believe that it was executed successfully.

I seems that the issue could be closed, unless you would consider this
an interaction bug.

[Bug 1811169] [NEW] Device firmware update does not detect AC power

2019-01-09 Thread Carroarmato0
Public bug reported:

On a freshly installed Ubuntu 18.10 on a Lenovo T580, the Gnome Software
center after awhile proposes to install a couple of firmware related
updates.

At first the AC wasn't connected, and upon trying to install either of
the updates, a popup appears saying that the update cannot continue
without the AC being plugged in.

This is so far expected behavior.

But even after connecting the laptop to the AC power supply, the message
persists, making it not possible to continue with the firmware updates.

I installed the necessary packages for openconnect and the relevant
network-manager related packages.

But when I want to add a new OpenConnect VPN entry through the Network

So I've been using the secondary screen with random activities like
watching youtube clips, browsing, moving windows between the
secondary screen and the primary. different workloads etc for at
least 2 hoursand

it didn't blank out on me even once!

Using the 4.5.0-040500rc6-generic build from Ubuntu.

Can other people test out the RC6 of the 4.5 kernel and see if this
release candidate also fixes your problems?

[Bug 1488719] Re: dmesg shows "[drm:gen8_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* The master control interrupt lied (SDE)!"

2016-01-26 Thread Carroarmato0
I also just tried the 4.5.0-040500rc1-generic kernel.

Minidisplay to hdmi convertor.

If I put my secondary screen on 3840x2160, I notice that after awhile I
get the same black screen interval bug again.

Keeping the resolution to the same as my laptop ( 1920x1080 ) seems to
be stable so far. No flicker yet.

[Bug 1488719] Re: dmesg shows "[drm:gen8_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* The master control interrupt lied (SDE)!"

2015-12-22 Thread Carroarmato0
I had to give a presentation with my laptop recently which has the same
issue of having the second screen randomly turn black and then back on
again.

Interestingly the presentation went without a hickup.

The thing that was different, was that I am having the issue when the
secondary screen was connected through HDMi ( with a minidisplay to HDMI
adaptor).

I wasn't having the issue using a mini display to VGA connector to a
projector with a far lower resolution as my secondary screen.

[Bug 1525675] Re: Complete system freeze when filtering on process name

2015-12-13 Thread Carroarmato0
Loris Degioanni from Sysdig commented on Twitter
(https://twitter.com/lorisdegio/status/676107175421337601) that the
version of sysdig in the willy/universe repo is ancient.

sysdig:
  Installed: 0.5.1

  Version table:

[Bug 1061826] Re: Unity Dash Is Too Small for Its Exclusivity

2012-10-07 Thread Carroarmato0
I'd like to point out that when you open the Dash, there are Close,
Minimise and Maximise buttons on the top-left part of the screen.
Pressing Maximise makes the Ubuntu Dash use all of the available screen
space, and your choice is then persistent even when you log out and back
in.

[Bug 989817] Re: Cannot change bluetooth device name

2012-06-02 Thread Carroarmato0
I've noticed than when sending a file from my laptop to my android phone
through bluetooth, my phone sees my laptop as the hostname I
configured.

But when I take a look at the info about the file I just transfered,
it's says ubuntu-0. Not sure if it's something on my phone because of a
previous pairing, or, somewhere ubuntu-0 is still being used.

2012-05-17 Thread Carroarmato0
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 988251 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/988251

Interesting, this bug seems to not always manifest itself.

Will have to figure out in which situations this bug gets triggered.

[Bug 986983] Re: Opening Empthay from the Indicator also opens the Preference window

2012-04-22 Thread Carroarmato0
Here is how to reproduce the bug:

1) Make sure Empathy is closed first
2) Start Empathy by clicking on the Messaging Indicator and -- Chat
3) Right-click on Empathy's icon in the Unity Launcher and select Open
Preferences
4) Close Empathy (it will run in the background)
5) Now go to the Messaging Indicator and press Chat again

[Bug 780360] [NEW] Driftnet not showing captured images

2011-05-10 Thread Carroarmato0
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: driftnet

It looks like this bug only manifests itself on the x64 architecture.

When starting driftnet with the -v option, it looks like it recieves
connections, however the images that are captured are never displayed.

It is possible to have driftnet save the captured images to a temporary
folder.

When launching driftnet without the -v option, it's not possible to
close down the application normally. It just hangs unless killed
manually with a SIGKILL signal.

[Bug 663395] Re: Abnormally slow network connections

2010-10-25 Thread Carroarmato0
After doing some research, I finally found out that IPv6 is causing the
huge delay in resolving url's.

IPv6 is enabled by default and apparently is the first IP protocol used
for which to resolv url's.

Most people aren't using IPv6 yet, so attempting to resolv over IPv6
will result in a huge delay untill the system stops trying and falling
back to IPv4.

This is the reason why the connections after waiting long enough will
succeed.

Also, ping uses ipv4, that's why it works (ping6 being the ipv6
counterpart).

Now,

 WORKAROUND
Disable IPv6 entirely

In a terminal, do this:cat /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/all/disable_ipv6
0 means IPv6 is enabled, we want it to become 1 (disabled) and make the change
permanent.

Open up the following file like this: sudo gedit /etc/sysctl.conf
And add the following lines:

#Disable IPv6
net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1
net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6 = 1
net.ipv6.conf.lo.disable_ipv6 = 1

Now reboot the system, and connectivity should be snappy as expected.
***

Although these settings have to do with the kernel configuration, I
think that it's up to Network Manager to figure out if resolving through
IPv6 is appropriate. So flaging this as a Network Manager Bug because
IPv6 is being used even if it's flagged as Ignore under the connection
settings.

[Bug 663395] Re: Abnormally slow network connections

2010-10-25 Thread Carroarmato0
To test DNS, you can use nslookup. It's a commandline tool for
querying dns servers.

1) Open up a commandline and type in nslookup and pressing enter (a prompt
should appear waiting for input)
2) type in url's likegoogle.com, facebook.com or ubuntu.com, etc... etc...
followed by and enter
3) You should be getting responses in about under 1 second for each query
4) exit with exit

If you get near instant responses, that means that DNS (over ipv4) is
ok.

Should you get very long response times, you're probably experiencing a
different kind of issue than explained in the bug report.
If this is the case, try changing Dns servers, for example OpenDNS.

You can switch DNS server(s) by manually editing your connection in Network
Manager, and selecting IPv4 Automatic, only addresses.
You should be able to edit the DNS server field.

In there you can enter the following IP's:208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220
and repeat the testing process with nslookup

Again if that fails, than I believe you are experiencing a different
kind of problem.

[Bug 663395] [NEW] Abnormally slow network connections

2010-10-19 Thread Carroarmato0
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 10.10 with the latest updates, I noticed that initializing
network connections takes ages to establish.

Symptoms are: Firefox and Google Chrome seem to take a long time to
resolve the url. Pinging hosts also takes it's time.

Not only on the wireless network, but also on the ethernet connection.

I tested to make sure it's not hardware related by connecting from
different places, trying to connect from other computers, and booting up
Windows on my same laptop to make sure it's not hardware or ISP related.

I also performed DNS lookups by running nslookup and try to resolve the
same different websites I've tried to reach through the browsers and
ping, and DNS resolution happens instantly.

All my tests have led me to suspect the latest kernel version.

Note that once the connection is established, traffic flows at normal
expected speed, untill another connection has to be started, then the
waiting game repeats itself.

[Bug 638777] Re: VPN establishing connection icon not drawn right

2010-09-15 Thread Carroarmato0
Taking a closer look, this is what happens: when connecting, the
(wifi) radius bars start animating. They are slightly larger than usual,
with an evenly large grey shadow under every possition where the radius
bars are filled.

From a visual standpoint, it looks like something might be wrong. A
suggestion would be to either remove the grey shadows, or use some kind
of spinning padlock icon to indicate it's busy establishing a vpn
connection. A padlock, because that is the icon shown when you are
connected to a VPN.

[Bug 632425] [NEW] gnome-panel doesn't draw indicators nicely after booting up

2010-09-07 Thread Carroarmato0
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

This happens very often when the computer starts up. Achter loging in,
gnome-panel starts, but doesn't draw the indicators that load very well.
Mostly some indicator icons appear double or half.

The workaround I've found is to pkill gnome-panel , which will make
gnome-panel get reloaded and then everything appears drawn correctly

2010-09-06 Thread Carroarmato0
** Description changed:

-
+ Empathy doesn't show the avatar chosen for MSN. When chosing a new Avatar in

[Bug 495577] Re: empathy cause kernel-panic when executed

2010-05-17 Thread Carroarmato0
Gentle men, this bug is caused by Avahi trying to bind to Vmware's
network module. Any application that uses avahi will likely cause a
kernel panic, not only Empathy, but also Pidgin will cause that problem
should the Bonjour/Avahi account be activated

I reported this problem back in Ubuntu 8.10

[Bug 491840] Re: PDF black-on-white text can't be seen when another PDF is opened using White-on-Black text

2010-01-13 Thread Carroarmato0
It's strange.

When I have the PDF with the BLACK background opened, all the other
normal pdf's from my MySQL course get completely black.

However, if I try opening some other pdfs like the one Sebastian
posted right here, the problem doesn't occur.

This leads me to think that there might be something strange within the
pdfs of my course.

I don't know if it might be relevant, but the PDF with the black
background, as well as the other pdfs of my course where made on a Mac.

Also note that the one with the Black Background come from a guest
teacher, while all the others were made by my regular teacher.

Long story short, the one with the Black background seems to be the
cause of this problem.
