[Bug 1671964] [NEW] DNS fails after reconnecting to a VPN

Public bug reported:

Since update 1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.3 of network-manager, when I reconnect
(i.e. connect, disconnect, connect) to a VPN (OpenVPN), DNS resolution
stops working.

Workaround: systemctl restart NetworkManager

[Bug 805876] [NEW] Direct/Inverse Search and LaTeX Preview are broken

- Direct search does not work: One expects to go to the line of the output file
corresponding to the line of the source file where your cursor is. Instead, the
first page of the output file is opened.
- Inverse search does not work: One expects to got to the line of the source
file corresponding to the line of the output file where you have
control-clicked. Instead, an error message appears (editor is not set) and vi
is opened.
- LaTeX Preview does not work: After precompilation, only red error signs
appear instead of the expected precompiled images.

I quick google search shows that these problems have been stated by
other users. Nonetheless, setting variables has not solved the problem
for me. I copy paste my init.el that worked for me since 2006.

[Bug 648180] Re: Unity sucks

2011-04-05 Thread CedricMC
Although perhaps @Erfan is out of line in his intensity, I have used the
same words myself (see #3) in a softer way. But one should think that,
if FS and OS communities are so quite and polite, why there are some
people that complain in that way? It is a response for their frustration
after having been used by Canonical as guinea pigs. I personally believe
that Unity was (and still is) in a too much early state and that to
release in such a state a software, on which the user experience depends
so much, has been a big mistake and a wrong decision by Mark
Shuttleworth.

I know that the variety of projects is part of the FS and OS community's
strength, but I did no understand why they begun to work in first place
in this project having already projects like their own netbook-launcher,
Gnome-Do or Docky and, furthermore, with the imminent release of Gnome
Shell (which in my opinion will change the DE and DM paradigm of the
GNU/Linux world).

I really hope that @Mikkel and @Bilal are right and that Unity has been
improved in 11.04, but this does not change what has been done.
Moreover, Canonical has lost part of my confidence with this move (and
others). Even though, I will surely give it a try (hoping it does not
sucks ;) ).

@Mark Shuttleworth , it is great that you are participating of this
discussion. I would have a question for you. What are the plans of
Ubuntu with Gnome 3.0? Will this affect Unity?

Even though I do not always agree with your point of view (see #11), I
want to thank you for the great job you are doing for the FS, OS,
GNU/Linux communities.

[Bug 648180] Re: Unity sucks

2011-04-05 Thread CedricMC
Thank you for answering.

Sometimes, I wonder if your intention is to simply replace Gnome Shell
by Unity as the default desktop shell* or if your intention is more
ambitious and you plan to develop your own DE (over Wayland, I guess). I
would prefer the former rather than the latter since it would imply a
stronger commitment in the collaboration of the Gnome development,
although from what you say I deduce that you (Canonical and Gnome) have
strong differences in your points of view.

Despite that I like very much Gnome (and I am excited for its next
release), I also think that KDE and XFCE have a lot of to offer,
specially XFCE when it comes to computers with low resources. I have
also been wondering why did you not use XFCE for the netbook
distribution (maybe the user experience will be strange from desktop to
netbook).

In the next weeks I will give a try to Gnome3, Natty, Unity and even
KDE** and, as you say, I hope to see Gnome3 soon in Ubuntu.

My bests.

Cédric

*: it is in my understanding that Unity is more a desktop shell than a desktop
environment, correct me if I am wrong.
**: I confess I never liked it too much since I always had bad experiences with
it.

[Bug 648180] Re: Unity sucks

2010-10-15 Thread CedricMC
Maybe the word sucks is not the best suited for a dissertation, but
joopbraak just made a point saying that unity is still very buggy and
user UNfriendly. Up to now, it has been a pain and, if anything changes
soon, I'm going to downgrade to 10.04.

- Graphic corruption on the tray icons.
- Unity sometimes crashes an restarts (at least).
- Unity sometimes disappears (open firefox, hit F11, close firefox, ups your
alone...)
- Hard to get on Nautilus, so it is hard to manage files, connect to a remote
server, etc.
- It steals the super key, so other programs that use it are broken, e.g.:
gnome-do, emacs, etc.
- Very slow, for instance filtering the program names (gnome-do is much more
simpler, better, faster, stronger).
- You can no longer use Alt-F2 to run a command.
- Etcetera.

I should also said that I like the whole idea thing of Unity. In
contrast to Toby Murray, I believe that the vertical bar (which is so
similar to Gnome-Do Docky) saves space in widescreen displays. Although
Unity maybe will be a great interface but, right now, it simply sucks.

[Bug 519553] Re: Right click menu could confuse users, leading to accidental removal of panel applet

2010-05-17 Thread CedricMC
Hi!

Since I have upgraded to Lucid, one of the most annoying problems is the
indicator applet behaviour. Is of my understanding that you/we are
changing from the previous RedHat's notification area applet to
Canonical's one, which will bring some problems during the transition.

Anyway, actions that before cost only one click, now costs several
clicks with the new indicator (as stated in https://bugs.launchpad.net
/indicator-applet/+bug/550809). For instance, Rythmnbox is affected or,
even WORST, files dialog (like moving files) can NO longer be hidden
to the tray. Moreover, its dialog is clearly confusing as pointed by
Dylan McCall.

So, I do suggest:

left click -- show/hide window (to the the tray) and/or regular action
right click -- application menu

Optionally:

double left click -- only show/hide window (to the the tray)
left click -- only regular action
middle wheel -- extra functionallity (volume control on volume app or
rythmnbox app, browse calendar)

The context menu of the indicator applet itself should be moved to the
separation bar and it should contain an option dialog.

Thank you for your effort.

[Bug 503641] Re: Find bar hides vertical scroll bar when searching

2010-02-28 Thread CedricMC
How to reproduce this bug:

1.- Look for a page that needs vertical scrolling (e.g.:
http://es.search.yahoo.com/search?p=ladrones)
2.- Use the Search bar (Ctrl+F) to look for a word (e.g: ladrones)
3.- Click Next until you reach the end of the search.
4.- The vertical scroll bar disappears.

NOTE 1: what really happens is that, in some way, the content window
gets bigger than the window itself (i'm referring to the firefox's
window, not the tab) and the controls that are at the right of the
window disappear.

NOTE 2: it could be that Daniel has pointed the problem. In the Spanish
version, the end-text-search could be too long: Se alcanzó el final de
la página, se continúa desde el principio.

[Bug 489097] Re: Inconsistent Naming of Invisible status in indicator applet and Empathy

2009-12-01 Thread CedricMC
In my opinion, as one appears offline both when one logs out or one
changes the status to Hidden/Invisible, it will be more accurate if
Empathy and the indicator applet use the following naming:

- Offline (Hidden) instead of Hidden, since Hidden is not a status by
itself that your contacts can see, but Offline.
- Offline (Close session) instead of Offline, since you are taking the
action of closing your session.

I think that in that way we would reflect better that our status will
change to Offline for your contacts, while it is clear which action
one has taken.

[Bug 490313] [NEW] The status icons are not correct

2009-11-30 Thread CedricMC
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Empathy 2.28.1.1 @ Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala

The icon set to reflect the status is paired:
- Green circle - Available
- Yellow circle - Occupied
- Red triangle - Away
- Grey square - Disconnected/Invisible

How they should be paired:
- Green circle - Available
- Yellow circle - Away ---
- Red triangle - Occupied ---
- Grey square - Disconnected/Invisible

I think the red triangle reflects better the unavailability than the
yellow circle, as the yellow circle (I would prefer orange like in
gtalk) reflects better the awaivity than the red triangle.

[Bug 201813] [NEW] Gutsy hangs at shutdown

2008-03-13 Thread CedricMC
Public bug reported:

PROBLEM:

Gutsy Gibbon hangs at shutdown and doesn't power off.

REMARKS:

- At shutdown, the following message appears:
NetworkManager: WARN nm_hal_deinit(): libhal shutdown failed - connection is
closed

- Some suspicious messages from dmesg:
hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC880, trying auto-probe from BIOS...
hda_codec: Cannot set up configuration from BIOS. Using 3-stack mode...
apm: disabled - APM is not SMP safe.

- To use the command sudo rmmod -w snd_hda_intel solves the problem
and the computer power off. Furthermore, the network warning does not
appear. To use the switch -f does not unload the module.

- The system does not hibernate when using pidgin and, sometimes,
firefox and it never suspends.

CONCLUSION

There is no conclusion since the source of the problem is not clear. It
could be the sound driver, the network driver, the energy management or
whatever else. This bug has been largely reported and confirmed (since
6.06), but never solved, I don't know why.

[Bug 62745] Re: [time-admin] Synchronize Now work only when ntp-server is installed

2006-11-29 Thread CedricMC
That's true also for Xubuntu 6.10. But I disagree with the original
suggestions, time-admin must be able to synchronize with ntp servers
without need of server being installed, like using ntpdate
ntp.server.com.
